RENO, Nev. - Five decades ago,Anthony Cerrato of East Hanover,

N.J., exchanged wedding vows withhis wife, Christine, and gained atravel companion for life.

Their journey through life together has included an annual trip to theUnited States Bowling CongressOpen Championships.

The two made their way to the National Bowling Stadium this week for the 2014 tournament, a tripthey've made many times over theyears, but this time is a little bit dif-ferent.

Not only are they in The BiggestLittle City in the World to celebrate

Cerrato's 50th walk down the tourna-ment's famed Center Aisle, it also isthe 50th anniversary of their walk down the aisle as a couple.

The two were married in Belleville, N.J. in front of approximately 125 friends and family members onMay 20, 1964, and Cerrato's milestone march 50years later came in front of his wife, hundreds of fel-low competitors, guests and bowling fans. Hereceived a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin tocommemorate the achievement.

"It's a wonderful coincidence that they both fell onthe same day," said Cerrato, the 174th bowler in his-tory, and last of 10 this year, to reach 50 years of USBC Open Championships participation. "It mademy wife very happy. As you get older, you almost livefor making your wife happy. She enjoys coming to

the tournament each year now."While addressing the crowd at the NBS on Tuesday,Cerrato noted that his wife initially didn't understandwhat the tournament experience was all about, butonce he convinced her to join him, starting in 1999, it

became something she looked forward to each year."She was always skeptical of what we did when we

came bowling, so I asked her to come along," Cerratosaid. "Now, prior to the tournament, she's the first toask for the details about when and where we aregoing and staying."

The annual trek to the Open Championships nolonger is a one-stop trip for the couple, who use the

event as an opportunity for a vacation and a chance tosee more of the country.

Last year, their time on the West Coast included avisit to California's Wine Country, while a previoustrip allowed them to see San Francisco. This year, they're headed to Las Vegas.

"The beauty of the tournament is the fact that youcould see different parts of the country - unique partsyou might not normally go to," Cerrato said. "For example, I would have never gone to the Dakotas tosee the monuments under normal circumstances, butthe tournament being in Billings, Mont., (2002) madethat possible."

Even with all of the miles logged, the most memo-rable thing about Cerrato's tournament career is thecamaraderie and time he's been able to spend withfriends.

The 77-year-old right-hander made his tournamentdebut at the 1962 event in Des Moines, Iowa, and his

passion for bowling and tournament play wereinstilled in him by his brother, Dom, who notched 35years at the Open Championships.

This year on the championship lanes, Cerrato shot535 in doubles, 490 in team and 436 in singles for anall-events series of 1,461. In 50 tournament appear-ance, he has knocked down 82,713 pins for a career average of 183.8.

    High School State ChampJake Rollins

Sets Youth Travel LeagueRecord with 300-836

By Vince AlbrechtFAIR LAWN, NJ - Glen Rock senior Jake Rollins has

been tearing up the lanes all season long , firing telephonenumbers indiscriminately virtually everywhere he bowls. On February 2nd in Stan Niemiec Youth Travel competi-tion at Lodi, Rollins fired 300: 780; less than a fortnight

later, he captured the NJSIAA State Boys Individual Titlein a manner never previously done in a ChampionshipFinal: he rolled a perfect game. On a day when theBergen Record honored him as High School Bowler of the Year, the 17-year-old accentuated same by re-writingthe Stan Niemiec Youth Travel League three-gamerecord, clearing the pin decks on his first delivery anastounding thirty-one times, including his first nineteenof the match. When the dust from the obliterated Fair Lawn pins settled, the telescore recap flashed: 300-258-278: 836. What made Rollins performance even moreremarkable was the realization that of the other thirty-oneyouth travelers, only two other 600 sets were recorded.

Normally, thats a clear indication that the lanes werechallenging, rather than bowler-friendly. If that was thecase, then Jake was certainly up to the challenge, fittingfor a state champion.
