JENN MORISON

Parents in the South Okanagan area have found a cute little spot to talk all things baby. The Big Blue Frog & Friends is a wonderful new shop that offers a variety of more natural choices for the newest member of the family. From cloth diapers to teething, babywearing to nursing, there is a little something for everyone, with a wide selection of Canadian made items. The Big Blue Frog is not just a place to shop but offers - space to pop in and breast feed or change diapers

in a comfortable spot, as well as offer family based community information. After participating in the rst ever Great Cloth Diaper Change by Guinness in 2011, Jenn has been organizing and hosting this event annually. The event has successfully brought together local vendors and community groups while fundraising for the Local Boys and Girls Club. Plans are now in the making for a full scale Family and Baby Expo for 2015. A passion to connect and share the experiences of parenthood with other parents throughout the community has been the foundation of her business. Join us on Saturday, May 31 for our First Anniversary.

ANNE AND JANE

Three years ago when Anne Bauer and Jane Saunders rst met at a interior decorating class at the Okanagan College campus in Penticton neither knew what was down the road. Last fall that chance meeting led to the two of them opening At The Front Door. The boutique style interior decorating store was dreamed up so that people in Penticton wouldn’t have to travel to nd unique items. Jane and Anne both specialize in home décor and design and travel great distances to nd items to suit every decorating style.

For both this is a new career path. Jane a retired high school drama teacher, also owns Vancouver House Bed and Breakfast with her husband. She’s still has passion about the theatre and is involved with Many Hats Theatre Company both on stage and as a director. With over 30 years experience in sales, marketing and merchandising, having a home decor business partnership is a dream years in the making! Anne has always been very community minded, serving as a board member on her local Family and Social Services board, local Minor Hockey board, as well as having

spent many years working with RCMP Victim Services and the Canadian Red Cross. Moving to the Okanagan and having the opportunity to open a store in Penticton was a natural t, since her husband’s family is originally from Penticton! At the Front Door is the retailer for Company C in Western Canada, selling custom made quality wool rugs, throws, cushions and bedding.

NURSE NEXT DOOR HOME CARE SERVICES

Nurse Next Door has been proudly serving the South Okanagan/Similkameen for 5 years and is going strong. It’s About Caring, Not Just Healthcare..........our staff bring these words to life every day in the community. While providing the basic home care needs such as bathing, dressing, making meals and housekeeping, our staff are also able to go beyond

the basics. Nurse Next Door can help seniors to resume activities that they once loved to do but have stopped

doing. I love to hear about what our staff are doing to improve the lives of their clients. Some of the more memorable activities have included swimming in the lake, cross country skiing and biking, but just as important have been attending hockey games, gardening, browsing at garage sales and street fairs and picnics in the park. We see a huge improvement in the quality of life for clients who are able to

participate in activities they love and are meaningful to them. Our care staff are all unique, with varied talents, but they all share a passion for making lives better. Our Care Designers, Janet and Suzanne work hard to ensure that individualized care plans are developed and that care staff are well matched with their clients. We actively support local community events such as the Alzheimer Society’s Walk for Memories, The MS Walk, The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and numerous events that promote health and wellness. We love the Okanagan and wouldn’t dream of living anywhere else.

JANIE GINGELL

Janie began Leading Edge Consultancy in 1992 but moved to the Okanagan ve years ago. She quickly realized her core marketing skills and wealth of experience could usefully be applied to local businesses. The goal is simple: to

facilitate entrepreneurial business owners to grow their sales to a higher level through the application of essential marketing tools, and to enhance the appeal of the South Okanagan as a place to visit, live forever and do business. Janie’s an a cionado and ardent promoter of the Okanagan lifestyle: from food, restaurants and cooking; wine, spirits and craft beers; to the outdoors - skiing at Apex, gol ng, biking the KVR, hiking and outdoor photography. All this is evident in her work

and social media presence. “To grow a business needs teamwork and a coordinated marketing campaign: most likely utilizing both traditional and social media. Websites, newsletters, buyer clubs, and especially social media are playing an increasingly important role”.  Janie can help you spend your budget - large or small - in the most cost-effective manner.  “Clients love our friendly customer service and we love it when they ask us to take on more marketing aspects for them - your success is our success!”

Keeping on Top of Your FinancesMany small business owners take

a basic approach to financial manage-ment. They have two main concerns: whether their bank account balance is positive; and if they’ll get their busi-ness income and expense information to the accountant in time for their annual tax return.

The problem with this approach is that by the time you discover there’s a problem with your company’s financial performance, it may be too late. Taking corrective measures early on will vastly improve your chances of success.

There are three types of financial statements you should be familiar with:

1. Income statement: this shows the income and expenses the company has incurred over a given period of time.

2. Balance sheet: this gives a snap-shot of your company’s financial state at a given time - what you own (your assets) and what you owe (your liabil-ities).

3. Cash flow statement: this reports the cash generated and used during a specific period. This differs from the

income statement because cash may not change hands when a sale or pur-chase occurs.

As a business owner, looking at your financial statements annually isn’t enough, especially if you don’t have the information until several months after the end of your financial year. You really need to look at your finan-cial statements on a quarterly or even monthly basis. Keeping on top of your business finances is getting easier with the availability of software such as Sage 50 Accounting or QuickBooks. But if you use these tools, make sure that you understand how to enter in the information properly. If you don’t, the financial statements generated by the software won’t make any sense.

Many bookkeepers and accountants offer training on accounting software. To save a lot of headache for everyone down the road, get your bookkeeper to help with the set up.

It’s also important that you understand what your financial statements mean, so that you know how to use the informa-

tion they provide. Women’s Enterprise Centre offers two learning guides to help with this: Financial Understanding and Financial Management.

Women’s Enterprise Centre is the leading business resource for BC women who own a business or are thinking of starting a business. Our team of pro-fessionals provides business loans up

to $150K to start, grow or buy a busi-ness. We also offer workshops, busi-ness advisors, mentors, resources and a supportive community to help women start, grow and succeed in their busi-ness. Visit our website at www.women-senterprise.ca and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wecbc or call 1.800.643.7014 to get connected today.

Do you know your customer and how to grow your business?First choose your growth strategy –

focus on sales or increase your profits. Then ask yourself the following ques-tions to start assessing whether your business has or is able to get what it needs to successfully implement your growth strategy. 1. Products/Services• Are you seeing demand increasing for your products and services or is it slowing?• Which ones take a great deal of resour-ces but are hard to sell or get a good price for? Are there products/services that are actually costing you money?

• Are there products or services that could enhance your existing offerings and would be natural add-ons?2. Price• What do you think will happen if you raise your prices? Have you asked your customers?3. Customers• Do you know who your best customers are? Have you got any tools or data-bases that help you know your custom-ers better and manage your relationship with them? Do you track and follow-up with customers? Are you able to do this systematically?

• Which of your customers give you referrals? Do your customers have the information they need to help you sell your products or services?4. Marketing• Do you have a marketing plan for growth?• What are some possible new ways of distributing your product or service? 5. Supporting Operations• Do you have your processes defined and your procedures documented?• What is the next smallest amount of space or equipment you can rent or buy? For example, do you need 20% more

space to increase your sales by 2%? • Should you get more help? If yes, what kind of help do you need and how will you get it? Will you hire an employee, contractor or set up a strategic alliance with another company?• Will you have a positive cash flow each month? If not, how will you meet your financial commitments? Will you need more money to grow? For example, if you want to introduce a new product or service, will it take a large capital investment?
