God Changes Everything!

From June 26-July 2, 12 youth and 5 adults spent time togeth-

er in a coach bus, in deep conversation, in a convention cen-

ter, in the NRG dome, and all around the city of Houston,

TX, growing in faith and relationship with one another. It is

not possible for me to express the amount of gratitude and

hopefulness that fills my heart to overflowing as an out-

growth of this experience. Each evening, around 10:30, we

spent time together in conversation, debriefing the day, and talking through some of the things that made

an impact on each of us or surprised us in our experiences. I want to take some time this month to share

some of those meaningful experiences here, in the newsletter. I also encourage you, reader, to seek out any

of these fine people who went to Houston and ask them about it. I am sure they have things to share.

The first day of the gathering, June 27, we focused on the theme, “God’s call changes everything.” The

most remarkable experience from the first day of our time in Houston was spending time listening to At-

torney Bryan Stevenson, founder and director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization which seeks

to reform our criminal justice system, especially as relates to children and minors. Bryan gave clear steps

for how to harness one’s passion to change the world, and that was very meaningful to our group as we

debriefed Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, June 28, we set out in the morning to serve our neighbors in Houston. After we got off to a

bit of a rocky start, we ended up sorting and organizing 15,000 book donations from all over the ELCA to

share with the Houston Public School District. We learned about the intersecting issues of poverty and low

literacy rates, and we had some awesome conversations about justice afterward. Because of our service ex-

perience, the youth of NCLC decided they would like to learn more about poverty statistics in Racine

County, so that we might be able to “love our neighbor” more fully at home. That evening, as we engaged

the theme, “God’s love changes everything,” we heard from Caroline Meeker, a young person dealing with

the struggle of self love and an eating disorder. She shared her story of vulnerability and the transformative

power of God’s love.

On Friday, June 29, we spent time in the NRG Center, a Convention Center filled to the brim with learn-

ing opportunities. The young people in our group were amazed at the scope of our ELCA’s ministries in

the world. We learned from people fighting racism and sexism, heteronormativity, and homelessness. We

spent time learning about Habitat For Humanity, as well as a ranch where young people in need of treat-

ment can find a stable place of recovery.

Page 4: MAY 27 SEPT. 2

(continued from page 3) Our group conversation Friday evening was filled with the same sentiment:

“It’s incredible how much our church is doing, and how many opportunities there are to be in-

volved in this work.” Friday evening, we heard from Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, as she reflected on

the theme, “God’s grace changes everything”. She helped us think more broadly about God’s grace

being for EVERYONE, not just the people we like. On Friday we also heard from Rev. Will Stark-

weather, who shared his story of the transformative power of grace in the face of self-harm. Friday

night was an incredible evening of hope, grace, and we even got to participate in some conga lines

on the floor of the dome.

On Saturday, June 30, we learned how “God’s hope changes everything” as we spent time with

other churches from our Synod and heard more amazing speakers, including an amazing 11 year

old and her mother, who talked about the power of radical inclusion and celebration of persons in

the LGBTQ community. Saturday night also brought a Tenth Avenue North concert, which was

filled with beautiful, inspiring music. Before we headed out on Sunday afternoon, we spent the

morning in worship with 30,000 other people, singing and praising God—we even had commun-

ion for that many people! We got to hear a sermon from our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton,

through which we were filled with the Word of God before visiting the Johnson Space Center

(NASA), and heading home to Wisconsin.

This trip was so special and filled with so many more experiences than I can share here; I can’t wait

to talk with you about them.

—Pastor Delaney

The BoardWalk is intended to update the Congregation monthly regarding the Church Board activities. In June the Board discussed the 2018 Year to Date Financials, 2018 Min-istry Intentions, sabbatical update, and the Youth Gathering.

2018 YTD Financials:

• The board reviewed financials for the month of June. The 2018 expens-es and income were under what was projected.

2018 Ministry Intentions:

• The board reviewed the 2018 Ministry Intentions in preparation of the 2019 Ministry Plan. The 2018 Ministry Intentions were: Strengthen and develop caring relationships between members of God’s family within our congregation, build partnerships outside the North Cape Congrega-tion for the greater good of all God’s children, and empower youth to rec-ognize and develop Christian identity and spiritual gifts for the building of the Body of Christ. The board feels advancements have been made in these intentions and looks forward to maintaining this progress.

Sabbatical Update:

• New songs, inviting people from the ELCA’s wider church organiza-tion to preach, and other mindfulness practices learned and used during sabbatical will be continued. Pastor Brad will return from sabbatical on July 22nd.

Youth Gathering:

• The board was updated on what took place at the ELCA Youth Gath-ering from June 26th-July 2nd. The youth participated in worship, sing-ing, and listening to speakers for four nights in a row in the NRG Center with 30,000 other participants. During the days there were service pro-jects, interactive learning about what the ELCA is involved in, and a syn-od day with the Greater Milwaukee Synod.

Dear church family,

Did you miss me?

Were you thinking

to yourself “Where

is that Marty?” during the last week of

June? I bet you were, unless you didn’t

notice I was gone…You may have seen

the giant box of snacks next to the Wel-

come Center, ready to be loaded on to

the bus and head south to Houston for

the National Youth Gathering. Well, you

better believe I saw that box too, and

one day as I was perusing the chips and

granola bars and Ding-Dongs (and all

the other deliciousness), Pastor Delaney

picked up the box, carried it outside, and

all of a sudden, I was on my way to Tex-

as—an unintentional stowaway! I can’t

thank you all enough for your support

that got me whisked away to Texas.

From the snacks to the inspiring speak-

ers to the service day to the time spent

with other church mice from our Great-

er Milwaukee Synod, I was overwhelmed

with gratitude. And snacks.

Thank you so much to everyone who

helped make my trip to the Youth Gath-

ering happen. However unexpected my

trip was, it was definitely one I will never

forget! -Marty

Thank you to Jill Peterson for wa-

tering the outside flowers a couple times each week. Thank you, also, for changing the church sign.

Dear Church Friends and Family,

I want to thank you for your cards, kind words and prayers as I dealt with the loss of my brother. He was only 48 and I am grateful he is at peace. This situation was very diffi-cult for my family and I. The sup-port of Pastor Delaney and my church family helped a great deal! Thank you! Blessings to all,

35th Annual Fish Boil

Help Needed!

Our 35th annual North Cape Lutheran Church Fish Boil is on Saturday, September 29th. This wonderful

tradition brings our community together on our church grounds for a delicious Door County-style meal

cooked over an open fire, awesome musical entertainment, great conversation and generous donations

that help fund our mission and ministry. In 2017, we served about 825 people in under 4 hours! In order

to pull this off each year, we are in need of many volunteers before, during and after the event.

Watch for volunteer sign-up sheets in the entry way later this month for such things as donating desserts

& other food items, dining room set up, food prep, cooking help, dish washing, and clean up. Many of

these tasks can be done by volunteers of all ages, so please consider making this a family volunteer experi-

ence. Several people have already stepped up for key roles but openings remain for the following:

Busing/Waitstaff Crew Chief

Chief Decorator

Dishwashing Crew Chief

Please contact our Fish Boil 2018 Captain Margie Fischer (414-531-0473 or [email protected]) with any questions you have about how you can help with this amazing event.

ATTENTION FISHERMAN: We are seeking donations of fish for our annual sale of smoked fish during NCLC’s Fish Boil 2018. Funds raised from this sale will be shared with families in need here in Racine County. The best fish for smoking is early season fish or fish from Lake Michi-gan. Please contact Ginny Strueder (414-339-8838 or 262-835-4071) if you would like to donate fish or to find out more information. And…get out on the lake and catch some fish!

Page 13: MAY 27 SEPT. 2

Checking our Finances

In an ongoing effort to be transparent with our finances, the Board and the Ac-

counting Team would like to call attention to a few numbers above. It is encourag-

ing to note that our Year to Date (YTD) income ($149,584) continues to exceed

where we were at this time in 2017 ($139,877) and we are extremely thankful for

the generosity of our members. Our YTD expenses ($158,251) continue to be less

than we had anticipated while exceeding our expenses at this point in 2017 as well

as exceeding what we had hoped our income would be at this point in 2018

($153,869) in order to hit our 2018 income target of $332,189.

Presenting financial data monthly in a way that is easy to understand without caus-

ing unnecessary concern can be challenging given the fluid nature of congregational

giving (such as some months having 5 Sundays while other months like December

have typically higher giving). Our hope is this information raises awareness along

with prayerful consideration to give as we are able in order to grow the mission and

ministry of North Cape Lutheran Church.

Help Needed August 6-11 -Watering and Weeds We are searching for someone to water the flowers in the church planters and spray the brick patio weeds with vinegar during the week of August 6-11. Contact the church office if you can do this task 2 or 3 times during that week. Thank you!
