Keeping aquatic invasive species out o Montanawaters will be the ocus this summer o inspecting, outreach and education efforts by Montana Fish, Wildlieand Parks. Like other summers, FWP will operate 17 boatinspection stations around Montana this summer. Most
o these inspection stations opened on May 19 or shortlyafer in advance o Memorial Day weekend. All vehicleswith watercraf must stop when they pass an inspectionstation. Te core component o FWP’s aquatic invasive speciesprogram is the mantra “Clean. Drain. Dry.” All boatersmust clean their watercraf afer use, drain all bilges andlive wells and make sure all pools o water that may bein the watercraf are dry. Tis ensures that any invasivespecies would be eliminated. Last year, nearly 37,000 watercrafs were inspected
at Montana’s roadside stations. A total o 104 boats wereound to have been ouled by AIS contaminants andhundreds more contained standing water or noninvasive vegetation. Five boats were discovered to be ouled byzebra or quagga mussels. Montana law requires private motorists and outfittersand guides hauling watercraf—including motorboats, sailboats, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, rafs, jet skis andeven small kick boats popular among some anglers—toalways stop at AIS watercraf inspection stations or a brieinterview and equipment check. “Keeping aquatic invasive species out o Montana
waters is a priority that crosses all interest groups,” saidFWP AIS coordinator Tomas Boos. “It’s important ormunicipal water supplies, irrigation systems and or thehealth o our fisheries.” Invasive mussels are considered the biggest threat toMontana’s water. Tese mussels – quagga and zebra – can
multiply quickly and be transmitted easily by boats having visited inested water. Quagga and zebra mussels have contaminated watersaround the country, changing the ecological make upo water bodies, compromising irrigation systems andclogging up municipal water supplies. FWP considerswater bodies in Mississippi River states and east tobe contaminated. In the West only Idaho, MontanaWashington and Oregon are ree o the invasive mussels. And though it might seem to be a airly simplething to detect mussels and prevent their inestation into
Montana’s clean waters, it’s not. During an early lie stagecalled veliger, mussels are microscopic and can be presenin standing water. “Tis is what makes our clean, drain, dry messageso important,” Boos said. “It’s not just about making sure

So this Norwegian drives his truck into a tunnel on
the border between Sweden and Norway and gets stuck Te Swedish traffic master comes out and sizes upthe situation, “Vell, how about you let a little air out oda tires and try to back it up?” “Vhat da heck good is dat gonna do?!?” theNorwegian truck driver, Ole, replied, “it’s stuck at datop!”
the mussels you can see are cleaned off your boat, it’simportant that all water is drained and dried. I there’sstanding water in your boat or live well they could surviveand you wouldn’t even know it.” AIS inspection stations are not just or motorizedboats. Everyone with a watercraf must stop i they passan inspection station. Watercraf required to stop includedrif boats, rafs, paddle boards, kayaks, fishing float tubes
and canoes. At the inspection station people can expect to answera brie list o questions while an official inspects yourwatercraf. Te questions are a quick risk assessment to giveofficials a better idea o what they need to be looking or. Additionally, everyone who goes through aninspection station will get a raffle ticket or a drawing atthe end o the summer or a variety o outdoor recreationprizes. Te drawing is another incentive to encourageboaters to make sure they ollow the law and stop at theinspection stations. Keeping Montana waters ree o invasive species isa high priority or FWP as well as recreationists aroundthe state. Last year the agency put a lot o effort intoeducating boaters on the inspection station requirementsand the importance o stopping. Tis year that educationeffort continues but will be coupled with an enorcementcomponent that will include issuing citations whenwarranted.
“We all understand how important it is to keepMontana’s rivers and lakes ree rom aquatic invasives,”said FWP chie enorcement officer om Flowers. “Tisyear we’ll be stopping people who ignore inspectionstations. It’s just too important that all vessels get checkedthroughout the year.” Additionally, new rules will go into effect this monththat require boaters to remove their drain plugs when
trailering their boats, removing all vegetation rom boatstrailers and gear and making sure all standing water isremoved beore launching a boat. All o these rules areaimed at helping promote the undamentals o Montana’saquatic invasive program: Clean. Drain. Dry. “A ew simple and important rules could makethe difference in Montana,” Boos said. “I boaters andrecreationists are vigilant about aquatic invasives, we cankeep our water clean or years to come.”

SMDC issued to creditors.Bethea responded thatFrantz purchased sharesrom Valley County whichI verified with the Valley
County Commissioners’office to be true. What isFrantz up to now?5. It was brought up thatsome o the temporaryBoard were not propertyowners or shareholders.Bethea responded that theydidn’t have to be. So thequestion was posed: “Whydoes one need a stock
certificate or proxy withphoto o stock certificateto attend the annualmeeting?” Because that iswhat the Board decided.....CRAZY.6. I asked Bethea i hewould give me a one-shareproxy so that I could attendthe SMDC Annual Meeting,he quickly answered
NO. By virtue o the actthat I belong to St.MarieCondo Association (whoholds many shares), amI not automatically ashareholder?7. I asked Bethea i a listo SMDC properties andassets and a list o creditorswas available? He said: NOand that’s what they need
