Welcome, guests! God’s love welcomes you—no matter who you are or where you come from— and so do we. We believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect life, innocent death, and triumphant resurrection he saves all sinners even without our help. Jesus Christ makes us special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible, God’s authentic message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time guest or a curious observer with little religious background, we are delighted to share our worship with you. Please come back and worship with us again.

Children’s “My Worship Notes” are included in another document. They can be used by chil-dren of any age to keep notes during the service. If you would like to know more about Lamb of God, visit our website www.lambofgodlafayette.com Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube

OPENING VERSES M: In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; C: in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. (Psalm 5:3) M: We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, C: but because of your great mercy. (Daniel 9:18) M: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; C: establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17) M: Let me live that I may praise you, C: and may your laws sustain me. (Psalm 119:175) CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Let us confess our sins to the Lord. C: Father, I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child. Yet in mercy you sacrificed your only Son to purge away my guilt. For his sake, O God, be merciful to me, a sinner, and in the joy of your Holy Spirit let me serve you all my days.

INVOCATION [We invoke, that is, call upon the name of the Triune God to be with us this morning. The name of the Triune God and

the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms]

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

ABSOLUTION [The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners” (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23] M: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Upon this, your confession, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY [The Prayer of the Day compliments the theme of the day.]

M: Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. C: Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORD [Like Mary, we sit at the feet of Jesus to hear his Word (Luke 10:39).]

FIRST READING 1 Peter 4:12-17, 5:6-11 The cares we have, we cast on Jesus, knowing that any suffering will be borne in joy with eyes fixed on the glory that’s coming. 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suf-fer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

M: The Gospel according to John chapter 17. C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

Please stand [It has been a tradition in the Christian church to stand for the reading of the gospel for the past 2,000 years. Just as subjects rise when a king speaks, we rise out of respect for the words of our King.]

THE GOSPEL John 17:1-11 Jesus prays for himself and for his disciples, asking his Father to glorify him through his death and resurrection and that his Father protect his disciples as they go out into the world with the gospel.

M: The Gospel of the Lord! C: Thanks be to God!

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. 6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.

CHILDREN’S SERMON Children are invited to sit in the front of the sanctuary

SERMON based on 1 Peter 4:12-17; 5:6-11

What can I do when I am suffering?

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully hu-man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13) C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on

earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE NICENE CREED † Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spir-it are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity.
