Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday

The word “Pentecost” is a Greek word which means “the fiftieth”. Today, the Universal Church,

commemorates the 50th day (or the seven weeks) of Easter which comes to an end. We celebrate

Pentecost Sunday to recognize the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and that we live God’s very life, breath

and energy.

But what is the relevance of celebrating this solemnity today? We read in the Book of the Acts

(2:1) that the Holy Spirit descended individually on Jesus’ followers as they gathered together

and this brought about the first Christian church. Members started to share life together, focusing

on teaching, fellowship, breaking of the bread and prayer (Acts 2:42). They were inspired to share

things in common so that no one was hungry or needy. This brings our attention to the fact that

the followers of Jesus did not pursue their faith as lone rangers. The Holy Spirit poured out on Je-

sus’ followers when they were gathered together attest to the intention of the Spirit for them to

grow and work together as church not as islands. While the Holy Spirit does touch individual

lives, the church would not have grown as to where it is now if it were not the intention of the

Spirit that followers together are to act as church. There is always that temptation in us to pursue

our faith as private persons influenced by individualism of our American culture--For us long as I

have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I’m good. Celebrating Pentecost Sunday allows us

to remember that it was during the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that the church came about. We

do well to consider living our faith as a community of believers working together in fellowship,

worship and evangelization. Each member of Christ’s church is endowed with a gift from the

Holy Spirit to help build the Kingdom of God here on earth.

In Jesus, Mary & Joseph, Fr. Rey

We lovingly pray for those in our Parish and families who cannot join us at Mass especially Bar-bara Duffy, Trish Marvin, Jack Lovell, Dr. John Cantwell. Please let us also pray for all our servicemen and women who serve in the Armed Forces throughout the world and remember them in our hearts today and everyday. We remember those dearly departed in our Queen of Apostles family and in our own families:

Searching for Volunteers The St. Vincent de Paul Conference at Queen of Apostles is hoping that you will consider joining our team of volun-teers. We meet as a group two times a month and take turns retrieving phone messages once per week in order to help those in need in our community. If you are being called by the Lord to serve in this rewarding ministry, call or e-mail [email protected]., phone- 650-776-3282

By virtue of our baptism, we are all—every one of us—called to evangelize. And what better way to do that, than to become part of the catechetical team! There are many different ways to share the faith, and I would love to help you explore where God is calling you to serve. Please join me in the community center THIS Sunday, May 24th imme-diately following the 9am Mass for a time of prayer and discernment.

Dorothy Day

A more unlikely candidate for prominence in the Church is Dorothy Day. She was not well known at the time, she was poor, unemployed living in a tenement, an unwed mother. Yet she was the real thing. She served the poor all of her life. She did not have an exalted opinion of herself – “I see only too clearly how bad people are. It is my own sins that give me such clarity.” It was her conversion to Catholicism that gave her clarity. But the world she faced was often hostile to her ef-forts. “People want peace, but not the things that make for peace.” She made her work the centerpiece of her life. She truly believed and lived out the spiritual and corporal works of mercy which are the core ele-ments of a peaceful world. She actively engaged in living out these principles, in part, by co-founding the Catholic Worker House with Peter Maurin. In San Jose, the Catholic Worker House (Casa de Clara) is the only Catholic homeless shelter in the area. They house women and children for a short time while they look for jobs. They can be reached at 297-8330.
