FINDING HOPE AMIDST TRAGEDY ____________________________________________________________

On April 16, 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador. This is considered one of the most powerful earthquake recorded in Latin America over the last two decades. News report have it that over 700 people were killed and injuries have been reported to be over 12,000 people. Damage to buildings and various infrastructure were wide-spread. Catholic Relief Services is coordinating with its partners and other humanitarian or-ganizations to determine how to best help the victims. According to CRS it plans to reach 20,000 families and help them with providing shelter, water and sanitation and psychological support. CRS also plans to provide hygiene kits that include soap and toothbrushes to as many families it can afford in Esmeraldas and Manabí, the two of the hardest-hit provinces. The people of Ecuador urgently need our help. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, we are called to be in communion with the struggles of the people of Ecuador by offering con-tributions to our special collection this weekend (May 21st and 22nd). The Diocese of San Jose, headed by Bishop Patrick McGrath, supports the efforts being undertaken by Catholic Relief Services. He calls each one of us to support our brothers and sis-ters as they struggle to move on and to rebuild their homes and their lives. Your dona-tion will help CRS respond immediately. Should you wish to donate, please make checks payable to Queen of Apostles, and indicate “CRS/Ecuador” in the memo. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated.

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:16

Support World Youth Day Pilgrims

We have reached 100 % of our $26,000 goal! On behalf of the WYD pilgrims and families, we thank the Queen of Apostles community for your generosity, prayers, and support. It all started with a vision of representatives from Queen of Apostles traveling to Poland for World Youth Day 2016. Thanks to our loving community, this vision is on its way to becoming a reality. We are excited to see Pope Francis and thousands of other young people who actively participate in their Catholic faith. Please pray for our hearts to encounter God, our eyes to see God, and our hands and feet to spread the Gospel upon return. The community is in our prayers always. If you have any specific prayers intentions, please email them to [email protected]. With a thankful heart, QofA WYD Coordinators

PEACEMAKERS

Fr. Christian de Cherge

Trappist Martyr of Algeria

On May 23, 1996, Islamic extremists murdered seven Trappist monks in Algeria. Fr. de Cherge and his companions had lived at the monastery in peace with their Arab neighbors. He joined the monastery there because of the kindness of an Arab friend when he had been a soldier in Algeria. The friend had saved his life. Fr. de Cherge wanted to repay an ancient debt. The monks shared his desire to create a place in the desert where Christians and Muslims could pray together. They lived by their Trappist beliefs and code, but at the same time welcomed their neighbors in for prayer. Fr. de Charge wrote to his murderer: “You, my last minute friend, you who know not what you do – may we be granted to meet together again in paradise, should it please God, the Father of both of us.”

Reflect on how we see our neighbor. How is it like or unlike Fr. de Cherge’s?
