A fond farewell – but not quite yet! This was going to be my farewell article. I was meant to be on the move to Devon, to take up a new role as Priest-in-Charge and Team Vicar of the Axe Valley Mission Community. This is a group of eight churches near Lyme Regis. Axminster is the main town in the group. I know the move will happen at some point but everything is so uncertain as we navigate our way through this Covid-19 virus outbreak. I was going to invite you all to my last service at Breamore Church on Sunday 31 May. I was really looking forward to the service and picnic afterwards at the Miz Maze with kite flying. The kite flying was going to help us celebrate Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples and others gathered in Jerusalem. The imagery used in the reading from the book of Acts talks about the ‘rushing wind’ – hence the kites. Well, none of that will happen but something else will happen and I do hope you will all be there for a big send off. My husband Matt and I and our daughters Bethan and Katy have lived in Woodgreen for 26 years and this is a huge move for all of us. We are going to miss you all hugely. But the God that I felt call me to being a priest here, is still calling me on, and I feel ready to respond. As the first disciples and others were filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, so I am responding to the spirit’s call on my life to serve others. Although this time is hugely sad and difficult, I have been so encouraged to see how people in our communities have been such good neighbours to each other. Volunteers have come forward to help with tasks and most importantly offered to call people. A friendly voice on the phone really can lift spirits. You are all amazing.

I will miss you all and can never forget how my journey of faith developed hugely here among you. Thank you for your love, support and encouragement. You are assured of my love and prayers always. And I do hope you may pop in if you are ever on a trip to the beautiful Dorset seaside.

Preachers’ Plan – May

The Lord’s Prayers

Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

If this only was answered we still would not be satisfied, and understandably so. It is an all-embracing request that our wide-ranging daily needs to a reasonable standard will be satisfied. That many of us will go through our lives with every need fulfilled tends to obscure the truth and the recognition that we are being well provided for! It is an admission of our dependence on God which we take for granted. But then, how wide is our definition of ‘daily bread’? It surely extends far beyond food. Its scope is broad, its needs are obvious. When we pause for grace before we eat, should we not be committing the whole of our day to God. We know not what a day may bring forth!

David Cheadle Sunday services at Frogham Chapel are postponed for the time being in line with Government regulations. Please see the Chapel Notice Board for updates.

HYDE CHURCH COFFEE ROTA

As I write this we are still in lockdown but perhaps we could all make our own tea/coffee at about 10.30 after the online/live streamed service and have a time of prayer together in spirit although not in person - "Be joyful always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances." 1 Thessalonians 5 Linda Light

FOR YOUR PRAYERS

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust". Psalm 91 Risen Lord, we pray for your comfort and your healing touch to be upon all those known to us who are suffering in body, mind or spirit and for Sally & Peter, Roger & Audrey, Peter & Sue, Mike, Heather, Pam, Edna, Glynis, Sue Alkison and Rhionna. May your blessing rest on each one of them. God of Love, we pray for those mourning the loss of a loved one. May they experience the feel of your loving arms around them and your peace in their hearts. Community Prayers - Please pray for all those in our community suffering from the effects of Covid-19 whether physically, emotionally or financially. We give thanks for our local NHS, care workers, key workers, volunteers and all those responding to the needs of others either practically or spiritually. Could I please have any prayer requests for the next magazine by May 12th. Many thanks, with love in Jesus, our risen, ascended Lord.

THE CHURCH BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED, BUT THE CHURCH CERTAINLY ISN'T!

During this lockdown period, all members of our congregations and wider communities are very much in our hearts and minds. We are praying daily for you all, and remembering all of those in our town and villages who are helping and supporting their families, friends and neighbours - often at great personal cost to themselves. We are giving thanks for all the people who serve in the NHS, in care homes, in shops, and in many other ways, including everyone keeping our society and food supplies going.

The Avon Valley Churches are continuing with Sunday and Daily Services - we're on the Avon Valley Churches Facebook page every day at 10.00a.m. - a 'Thought for the Day' each weekday (and on Saturdays from May 2nd, 'The Saturday Conversation'), and on Sundays a Service, sometimes Morning Service, sometimes Holy Communion. We also have an early Prayer Book Communion at 8.15 planned for May 24th. The Services then appear on YouTube shortly after - again, search for Avon Valley Churches. Each week there are on-line resources for children - assemblies, Messy Church, etc.

So, Worship and Service continue. You can receive Partners, our weekly newsletter, by e-mail each Friday - either go to the Avon Valley Churches website, and click Partners, or phone us up (numbers on back page of this Magazine). There are also a few copies in the Church porches each week.

If you need someone to talk to, or there is any way you think we might be able to help, then do be in touch.

We are really looking forward to the reopening of the Churches at the end of this time, to being able to see everyone again and to worship together back in our lovely buildings.

Canon Gary Philbrick, Rector.

CHURCHWARDENS’ NOTES This is a very strange time to be writing these notes – all of us in lockdown and unable to meet in person. The good news is that we are able to keep in touch thanks to the wonders of modern technology. We are trying to make sure that everyone on the church electoral roll is contacted occasionally by telephone – if you know someone who would just like a friendly call do let one of us know. Then we have all got used to something called ZOOM! We have had meetings via Zoom, Bible studies via Zoom and have conducted a Morning Service using Zoom. Also there is Facebook and YouTube all coming to the party – you can find a list of the services, “Thoughts for the Day”, children’s activities and conversations on the benefice website – avp-benefice.org.uk – that is also where this magazine can be found! As you are aware all churches are closed during this crisis, but at Hyde we have books in the porch which people are welcome to borrow and return to either Penny or Gina – a big thank you to both of them for arranging this. Copies of Partners are also available in the porch if you make that venue a part of your daily exercise. Obviously, the work we had expected to be doing this month in the church has had to be put on hold for the moment and we will have to wait to see when the project becomes viable again. In the meantime, we have succeeded in creating a wild-flower area in the churchyard – it has been rotavated twice and seeded with a special mix of wild-flowers – we would like a little more rain for their good. We are very blessed in Hyde by the wonderful Hyde Parish Support Network – they are collecting prescriptions, doing shopping and befriending the lonely. What a wonderful team! Please pray with us for those who are ill, at this time, and for their families for whom it is so difficult because of visiting restrictions. May God bless you all and keep you safe.

HYDE WAR MEMORIAL PARISH HALL Hyde Hall is currently closed to the public with no events or activities taking place. The time is not being wasted, however. Our fantastic cleaner, Tina, has given the whole place a thorough spring clean, letting light into dark corners where no-one has been for years! It looks lovely! Many thanks to Tina and the Duty Officers who visit daily to check on security and safety. We have also cleared out the furniture storeroom and given it a coat of paint. Many years of enthusiastic furniture moving has taken huge chunks out of the breeze-block finish, so it has soaked up a lot of paint. Meantime, many of the bookings we had for this year, including four weddings, several christenings and parties and two Brownie camps, have been moved to next year so 2021 is looking like it will be a very busy year. If you are planning a celebration next year, or even just a large post lockdown family get together, then you would be wise to get your hall booking in now before it fills up! Although the Hall is not in use, we do have outgoings to cover so we still need revenue to be able to ensure the Hall is maintained and ready to reopen. With the cancellation of bookings for the foreseeable future and no income from Frogham Fair, also cancelled, this year, the proceeds from the 100 Club have become more important. This would be a good moment to join!

100 CLUB If you are not already a member please would you consider joining and supporting the Hall? It costs £2 per month per entry (you can have more than one!) and monthly prizes are 1 of £50, 1 of £20 and 3 of £10. Please contact Andrew Fenn: [email protected] or telephone on 01425 547273 to participate. Prize-winners in April were:

HYDE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Coronavirus – Parish Response The Parish Council would like to thank everyone in the Parish for their support and response during these uncertain times: it has highlighted that our community is wonderful at looking after each other. Hyde Parish Support Network (incorporating Hyde Church, Hyde Parish Council and Hyde Neighbourhood Watch) has been coordinating the efforts of everyone in the Parish and ensuring that every resident requiring assistance is able to access the appropriate support – we know that there are lots of you helping your neighbours. If you need assistance during the COVID-10 pandemic and have been unable to contact our volunteers, please contact the members or Clerk - to collect prescriptions, essential groceries or to chat about your concerns. For the latest Government advice: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ Road problems A lot of potholes have been filled and road repairs have taken place over the last couple of months, so our roads are looking a lot better but it is really important to keep reporting potholes online – or to the Clerk – please don’t think that someone else will have done it. Use this link to report issues on line: https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance/roadproblems. If we keep reporting holes as they appear, then hopefully our roads will not deteriorate to the condition they were at the end of 2019. The Government has changed the regulations and we no longer have to hold the Annual Parish Meeting within the limited timescales of a

normal year, so we have postponed the meeting due in May and will hopefully be able to hold it later in the year. Please refer to the Parish noticeboards and website for current information about our monthly Parish Council meetings. At the moment the meetings are not taking place, but information is being circulated each month to keep everyone up to date – and virtual meetings are now permitted and may take place if there are decisions which need to be taken by the members. If you wish to raise any matters with your Parish Councillors please contact the Parish Clerk, Martine Coatham, The Wren's Nest, Hyde, SP6 2QE. HYDE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The Neighbourhood Watch scheme has been operating in the parish of Hyde in its current form for over 8 years now. It is run by Dai Morgan, who gets information from the police or people in the village and sends this out by email to all those on the scheme. At the start, the focus of the scheme was on suspicious or criminal activity in the area, but the scheme has evolved to cover community and social events and notices and is an excellent way of getting information out to those in the parish. It often includes urgent messages from the Parish Council or Churches; and has been invaluable in the current pandemic in identifying volunteers who are prepared to help their neighbours and putting them in contact with those in need of support. Each email goes out to nearly 400 people, but there are still significant gaps around the parish. If you are not on the list and would like to join, or know of a neighbour who is not on the scheme, please contact Dai Morgan on [email protected] or 01425 657270.

OPEN DOORS

“I had found a spiritual companion in this hellish place. Now there was hope”

North Korea is the most dangerous place in the world to follow Jesus. Tens of thousands of Christians are held in terrifying prison camps or banished to remote villages, to work as forced labourers. Young-Sik* was exiled to one of these villages, forced to endure a life of hard labour, freezing conditions and meagre rations. One day, he whispered desperately: “Oh sweet Jesus, how long do I need to live like this?” His prayer was overheard. Not by the authorities, mercifully, but by another believer - an older man called Byung-Chul*. Silently, Byung-Chul made the sign of the cross in Young-Sik’s palm to show that he was a Christian. But Young-Sik didn’t understand and pushed him away. Byung-Chul tried again. He hummed a line from a well-known hymn. “I was terrified!” Young-Ski remembers. “Byung-Chul’s face was so hopeful, and I worked out that he was humming the melody on purpose, for me to get his sign. The joy I experienced was amazing. I had found a spiritual companion in this hellish place. Now there was hope.” ‘WHERE GOD PLACED ME’ Byung-Chul had been in that place for decades. He was leading a secret church and looking after many kotjebis - homeless street children - who were there. He also had medical skills which he offered to others for free. One day a local high-ranking official fell ill. Byung-Chul helped him to recover, and in gratitude the official offered him an amazing gift: a chance to move to another city - and to have his official status raised. Byung-Chul refused the gift. Instead, he gave it away - to one of the street children. A few weeks later, the child left for a new life. Byung Chul lived out the rest of his life in that remote place. Before he died, he trained Young-Sik to lead the secret believers there. “It’s my

calling,” says Young-Sik. “This is where God placed me, not the government. As Byung-Chul always said, ‘If I live here, I’ll live here. If I die, I will die here.’” Today, Open Doors supports Young-Sik and many more like him. For our North Korean brothers and sisters, just knowing that others are praying for them and that they have ‘spiritual companions’ gives them the hope to carry on. FORDINGBRIDGE MUSEUM

Perchance to dream. How much sleep do you need? I have read that teenagers need about 8 to 10 hours, adults 7 to 9 hours and seniors 7 to 8 hours. I fall into the latter category and find that I need my 8 hours and I do love an occasional morning lie in. This frustrates my wife who gets up at some ungodly hour and has done the washing and read half a book before I surface. I bring the subject of sleep up because of an unusual article I read recently in a local newspaper from the 1790s about Mary Watts, “a poor woman” living in Fordingbridge who had, “lately died”. Mary’s, “ lethargic habit of body had for the last three years been very extraordinary and lately so considerably increased that she would sleep a week, a fortnight and sometimes a month, or more, at a time which she considered but a day.” In the 18th century people loved a weird story in the papers as much as they do today so no doubt the journalist does not hold back. How would she survive I hear you ask. The article goes on to answer that question. She lived with her son who was a weaver and, “his usual method of waking her from her torpor was by putting food in her mouth. When she awoke she would partake of a small quantity of aliment (an archaic word for nourishment), chiefly liquid, and quickly fall into the same state again.” This all may well be ringing a bell with those of you who have brought up teenagers but even taking into account some exaggeration, it does seem to indicate some sort of medical problem. It could have been Hypersomnia which effects 2 % of people causing them to need up to 12 hours of sleep. Another diagnosis could be Narcolepsy which is a rare long term neurological disorder that results in excessive daytime sleepiness and brief involuntary sleep episodes. People with this condition may be working or talking to friends and suddenly nod off. I have no medical qualification so apologise to anyone who has and is reading this, if I am talking through my hat.

Page 16: May 2020 - avp-benefice.org.uk … · afterwards at the Miz Maze with kite flying. The kite flying was going to ... my God, in whom I trust". Psalm 91 Risen Lord, we pray for your

Whatever the cause, word soon got around and poor Mary became something of a freak show. The article relates that, “Curiosity induced many ladies of the town and neighbourhood to visit her, and many efforts were often in vain made to arouse her.” As you might guess this story has no happy ending for poor Mary. “She awoke about three hours before her death and continued awake apparently in good health and spirits ‘till the moment of her dissolution, when nature, exhausted as it were by this last unusual effort, gave way and she sunk without a fight, to awake no more here”. Sweet dreams!
