fund raiser for the Rainbow Girls. Three Brothers who happened
to wear a hat to the dinner, including Deputy Grand Master
Gregg, were drafted to pass the hat. This gathered up $636.00.

$800.00.. The clock will be on display at Grand Lodge
Communication in June, AND raffle tickets will be
sold . Understand that specially made bikes will
bought for kids that can't use a conventional bike...

with one of the lodge officers who is going to Grand
Lodge and we will get your tickets for you. No need to
be present to win, BUT, if you win, one of the officers
will bring the clock to its new home. rope your lodge
officers into doing the same thing, just to see what we
as a fraternity can do when we put our hearts into it.

Patriot
Patriotism, for the right, is a good thing, not necessarily the same as heroism, but a worthy ingredient. Patriotism is a strong
feeling and belief. “You could write a book, sing a song, and salute the flag as your expression of patriotism. Patriotism is
what you believe it to be, personal, and only yours, but openly shared and displayed. Heroism has it’s defining moment
when every effort is a sacrifice, most often for a common good, and often confused with patriotism, but not mutually
exclusive. The hero might be patriotic, but the act is heroic.
Patriotism is expressed loudly by the proud believer. Heroism is displayed in an instant, and spoken of by others. It is like
a book, patriotism the expressible content, heroism the suspense and the ending.
Patriotism, a way of life, heroism often the life.—David Woodland Oriental Lodge No. 20

Arizona Masonry TRAVELING
Freemasonry is a unique institution that has been a major part of community life in America for more than 250 years. In a
time when travel was by horseback and sailing ship, Masonry spread with amazing speed. By 1731, when Benjamin Franklin
joined the fraternity, there were already several Lodges in the Colonies, and Freemasonry spread rapidly as America expand-
ed west. In addition to Franklin, many of the Founding Fathers - men such as George Washington, Paul Revere, Joseph
Warren, and John Hancock - were Masons. Freemasonry played an important part in the Revolutionary War and an even
more important part in the Constitutional Convention and the debates surrounding the ratification of the Bill of Rights. Many
of those debates were held in Masonic Lodges.
Between 1863 and 1882, the first 5 Lodges of Arizona were created under a foreign dispensation.
1) Aztlan Lodge #1 (was #177 under California Grand Lodge Charter)
2) Arizona Lodge #2 (was # 257 under California Grand Lodge Charter)
3) White Mountain Lodge #3 (#5 under New Mexico Grand Lodge Charter)
4) Tucson #4 (was #263 under California Grand Lodge Charter)
5) King Solomon #5 (under dispensation from California but received their Az Charter on the first day Az GL was opened)
The most unique dispensation was for the mining town of Globe. The Brothers their desired to form a Lodge but lacked a
two-story building in which to meet, a requirement of the Grand Lodge of California. To circumvent this rule, they requested
dispensation from New Mexico which they received. White Mountain Lodge No. 3 was subsequently chartered on January
18, 1881. Forming the Grand Lodge In early 1882 Tucson Lodge No. 4 sent letters to the other Lodges in the Territory of
Arizona to meet for the purpose of dedicating their new Lodge Hall and to form a Grand Lodge.
On March 23, 1882 delegates from each of the Lodges in Arizona met in Tucson and organized themselves as a Grand
Lodge. Not attending was Aztlan Lodge No. 1 at Prescott which did not send a delegation, holding the opinion that the move
was premature. The other Lodges adopted a constitu-
tion and elected officers, then organized the Most Wor-
shipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of
the Territory of Arizona. It was opened in due form on
March 25, 1882, granting a charter to King Solomon
Lodge No. 5 on the same day. The first Grand Master
was Ansel Mellen Bragg. There were, in all, five subor-
dinate Lodges at the time with a total membership of
274 Brothers. Each of the original five Lodges have re-
mained active since that time.
So why am I sharing this known information with you?
One of the items that are known about Masons is that
we travel. In Medieval times Operative Masons traveled
from town to town looking for work and lodging. Speculative or modern-day Masons, travel for different reasons. We travel
for the purpose of events, fundraisers or for the largest gathering of Brethren in the State, GL Communications. But what
about traveling for the purpose of history and education? In a way we do travel like our ancient brethren, but not for the
same reasons. How many can honestly say they have traveled to 1 of the original 5 Arizona Lodges for the purpose of history
or education? I know I haven’t. Like most of you I have traveled for the purpose of degrees or other events.

Arizona Masonry MASONICON 2019
Masonicon is one of the gems of the new side of Freemasonry. In their efforts to seek
more light, the brethren of Ezekiel Bates Lodge AF & AM began a tradition of bringing in
guest speakers for Masonic educational talks. Bro. Chris Douglas was asked and accepted
a spot on the illustrious lineup of Masonic speakers. He spoke of the fascinating history of

On April 3rd of this year, the Grand Orient of the Federal Dis-
trict (GODF), through its Grand Master, paid a significant tribute
to the Brazilian Army. As it was a major event and attended by
foreign officials, I was in the position of Grand Representative of
the Grand Lodge of Arizona near the Grand Orient of Brazil. In
this way, I understand that it is opportune to give you knowledge,
because this Grand Lodge was present at the ceremony, through
me. Here are some photos of the event, where I'm present (see

LEGAL
The basic tenet of any legal system is ethics, and realizing it takes ethical persons to form ethical opinions on guilt or inno-
cence. There can be little positive and equal views of what determines what is right, and what may be wrong. Legal systems
can, and must be, free of errors, bias, and doubt to be rated honest and effective. It is people that cause the doubts, and
misjudgements. Where can you find a perfect process to determine what is your right to do what has been done, and what
is the right thing to do. Wisdom, that great elastic mass of reasoning, does not make laws, authority does. To be more con-
cise, consider that to be fair is to be just. Is it possible to tell where the law stops, and justice begins? What you may
wish for does not make it legal. William O. Douglas said, "Common sense often makes good law". There have been many
decisions based on interpretation where what is right is not the same as being legal. Identify a great legal system not on its
ability to produce order and justice. Law seems to arise from the failures of human nature, and one of the failures is believ-
ing legal punishment of the offender is society's deterrent.—David Woodland Oriental Lodge No. 20
Arizona Masonry NEW FUND RAISING IDEAS
Sy Harrison Lodge No 70 is always looking for sources of money in order
to provide support to local charities. One Brother came up with an idea.
He acquired Mason jars that Brothers could use to collect their pocket
change. The idea is that little things can add up to a lot. Within nine
months in 2018, this effort raised over seven hundred dollars.
The Lodge voted on how to spend the jar money, and decided to provide
checks to --- and Payson Community Kids.
James Gier (Master) and Bro. Jim Muhr presented a check to Suzy Tubbs-
Avakian for Payson Community Kids.
WHEN PUBLIC RELATIONS?
Every Mason practices public relations whether they realize it or not. If you wear a ring, a lapel pin, or have an emblem on
our car, we are the PR for the Fraternity. Whenever we are wearing or displaying a Masonic emblem, we are developing a
public relationship on behalf of the Fraternity. As a Fraternity, we need to be seen in the eyes of the public. They need to
see we are doing something positive in the community which they can relate to. While some Masons believe that public rela-
tions is the role of a particular member or committee, the truth is public relations is
the responsibility of every Mason. While some Masons still prefer to keep Masonry's
light under a bushel, the fact is that same Mason probably wears a ring, or a ball cap,
and that same Mason is making a very obvious public statement, and that is public
relations. Consider this, the next time you fuss with the local merchant, or try to talk
our way out of a traffic ticket, and our ring or car emblem or Masonic license plate is
showing, we are also practicing public relations. As I was attending one our fundrais-
ing events, Prometheus 87 was in the public’s eye. It reminded me of why I was
there, who I am trying to be as a person and a Brother. How could I represent the
Fraternity and what message would I send to the public about Masonry when I de-
parted the event? It reminded me that our behavior is our most important and most
visible public relations program. In all three charges in the symbolic lodge we are
reminded of the importance of our behavior and our actions are seen by the eyes of the public and what the public sees is
the perception about our great fraternity. Make us proud. Be a Positive PR Man for Masonry in and out of the Lodge.
ITS UP TO YOU
Dutch Masons have a very wonderful saying in their initiation ceremony of an Entered Apprentice. The
phrase "Op U komt het aan" is spoken at a very special moment and means (more or less) 'It is up to
you'. It is then up to YOU as an EA, FC or a MM to begin building yourself; to begin contributing to
your World, your Society and to your Craft. It is up to YOU to seek and to knock; but also to answer
and open the door when others need you. We must never forget that the strength of the chain is in the
weakest link; and we must therefore be reminded to not become complacent in our endeavours to con-
tinuously build and strive for that perfect ashlar

HELPS HONOR THE 75th
ANNIVERSARY OF THE
GI BILL On March 30, 2019 Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 worked with the
Historic Town of Florence, American Legion Post No. 9 and the
McFarland State Park to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Ser-
vicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the GI Bill.
The event also honored one of the Founding Fathers of the GI
Bill was Florence resident and Pinal Lodge No. 30 Ernest McFarland. A big parade down Main St., a concert by Evie Clair
(of America’s got Talent fame), and speeches by numerous dignitaries highlighted the event! A proclamation by Town of
Florence was presented by Mayor Tara Walter to the Legion Post Commander which will be proudly displayed. Family of
the late Senator, Judge and Governor McFarland were present and greatly enjoyed the festivities. Gila Valley Lodge was
proud to provide logistics support and helped fundraise. Proceeds from the event are going to the building of a Veterans
memorial park in the middle of the Historic Downtown.
Arizona Masonry DO YOU KNOW YOUR PAST GRAND MASTERS?
MW John M. Ormsby was vice president of the Valley Bank, has
was connected with western commercial enterprises since his ear-
ly boyhood. He started in as letter boy for the Wells Fargo Ex-
press Company at Sacramento, spending some years with the
company and being promoted several times until he attained the
position of express messenger.
He then took up railroading as assistant paymaster of the South-
ern Pacific Company at San Francisco, continued with this corpo-
ration for a number of years until he accepted a position with the
Western Union Telegraph Co., and came to Arizona in 1887 to
become manager of their office at Tucson.
For twenty years he remained with this corporation. He resigned
his position with the Western Union to become cashier of the
Arizona National Bank, of Tucson, and for sixteen years was a
prominent figure in the commercial and financial life of the Old
Pueblo. Mr. Ormsby was elected to vice president, and moved his
family to Phoenix and assisted in the active management of what
was then the largest bank in the state.
During his long residence in Arizona, Mr. Ormsby was been a
leader in all affairs pertaining to
the educational development of
the state and served as a mem-
ber of the Board of Regents under four different governors. He was the second secre-
tary appointed to the University of Arizona, and his work has been instrumental in the
upbuilding of this institution. Despite his activity as an educator, banker and business-
man,
MWPGM Ormsby is best known for the part he has taken in the fraternal life of Arizo-
na, having been Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Arizona in 1892, Past Grand
High Priest, Past Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of Arizona, and six times
he was Master of Tucson Lodge No. 4.
MW Ormsby was a native of the Keystone State, having been born at Greensburg,
Pennsylvania, October 9. 1851. His parents were John S. and Jane Hindman Ormsby.
He was united in marriage to Miss Ella Gorham, member of a prominent old New Eng-
land family, and to Mrs. Ormsby's influence and assistance is largely due the success
attained by Mr. Ormsby.
MWPGM Ormsby passed to the Celestial Lodge on April 22, 1922 in his home state of
California.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL
Erected in the 1920s and 30s, it soars 333 feet as a beacon of Light and knowledge, educating and inspiring all who visit it.
Recognized in 2015 as a National Historic Landmark, the Memorial is one of the most impressive and iconic buildings in
the area around our nation’s capital. Our new fundraising endeavor, The Landmark Century Campaign, aims to support a
thorough restoration of the Memorial. And we can help! Today, the Memorial is a museum like no other in the world. Everything we do revolves around our vision: “to inspire hu-
manity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the
Mason, and Father of our Country.” Open seven days a week, the Memorial offers
detailed exhibits and guided tours that teach the general pub-
lic about George Washington, his life and virtues, and the
role that Freemasonry played throughout his life. Further, the
Memorial is an important space for the performing arts, so-
cial gatherings, public events, and educational seminars. And,
of course, it is an active
Masonic temple, housing two Craft lodges and regularly
hosting visiting lodges from
around the country. The
Memorial is a central hub
connecting Masons to one
another, and connecting the
Craft to the
public, our nation, and our
world
For the past decade, the
Memorial Association has devoted tremendous energy and resources to the renovation of
the Memorial. Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and
repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom
restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was complet-
ed nearly a century ago.
Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to
perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and
protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in
better than new condition.
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands as the
most distinguished monument to Washington ever build by a
private organization –THE MASONS

Supposedly, the tomb of King Hiram
of Tyre is located a few miles southeast
of the city of Tyre in a small village
named "Hanaway." The tomb consists
of a large limestone sarcophagus on a
pedestal. However, the idea that it is
actually Hiram's tomb is disputed, as
dating from the monument places it
more firmly in the age of the Persian
empire.

Brethren, Friends, and Family,
This year the Masonic Charities of Arizona approved 18 grants totaling $30,000 to organiza-
tions throughout Arizona. These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed ser-
vices to their communities. Those services include assistance to our Veterans at the three
VA Hospitals in Arizona, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and
assistance for people with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, Adult literacy pro-
grams and Personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless.
We are able to award these Grants from the income of our investment fund, Lodge and Per-
sonal donations and support from Grand Lodge. In order to keep up with the desire to ex-
pand our Grant distribution to more organizations and communities around the State we
ask for your help.
We have registered with the Amazon Smile Foundation. Amazon Smile will donate 0.5% of
the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization selected by their cus-
tomers. For Amazon customers to select the Masonic Charities of Arizona to receive these
donations go to http://smile.amazon.com/ch/94-2746389 to automatically select us. Or you
can go to www.smile.amazon.com and you will be prompted to select a charity. Now you are
ready to shop and support the Masonic Charities of Arizona.
The Board of Directors of the Masonic Charities of Arizona extends our appreciation to
all of you for your support.
Fraternally,
Craig Hutchison
Secretary, Masonic Charities of Arizona
