BEST PRACTICES: THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION ON FACEBOOKYou can build a vibrant and loyal book club without ever meeting in person. At the Medina County (OH) District Library, we’ve cultivated a terrific book group on our Facebook page. We call it the Wednesday Night Book Discussion.

About five years ago, our library system was actively growing our social media presence. When we posted book recommendations or asked a simple question like, “What are you reading this weekend?” our followers responded enthusiastically. Other libraries had had success with online book chats, but we didn’t want to limit the discussion to just one book. Instead, we decided to post at the same time every week and ask what everyone was reading.

For the first year, we averaged 30 posts per week in the hour between 9 and 10 pm. Some nights, only a handful of people posted, but we found that the “reach” of our Wednesday Night Book Discussion kept growing over the next two to three days. As people visited our Facebook page and scrolled through our posts, they saw all the titles our followers were reading.

Slowly and steadily, our following has grown. Loyal readers post week after week, and each Wednesday we have new people participating. We sometimes give away ARCs of new books coming out, or a tote bag from a conference, or every now and then a gift card. Our reach is now over 3000 every single week, and some nights as many as 200 readers join in. People comment on each other’s posts, and it’s exciting to see a book that one person recommends coming back a few weeks later with another positive review.

Evaluate your social media presence to see what kind of posts, tweets, or snaps bring out your readers, then give them the chance to share what they’re reading.

Nate McHale is a successful surgeon with a wife and daughter he cherishes. He is called to return to his hometown for a funeral. Greystone Lake holds many secrets: a fire and mass poisoning on a luxury nightclub ship in the 1930s; the car accident that killed Nate’s parents and brother; Nate’s high school girlfriend’s disappearance and murder; Nate’s own cruel acts as a teen; and now, a new generation of young adults bent on exacting vengeance for past wrongs. His friends called him the Storm King, for when the weather was violent, so was Nate. As the investigation into Lucy’s murder seems to stall, Nate realizes there is much more at play in Greystone Lake than any police officer can regulate.A steady pace, past-and-present narration, and a plot where the sins of the past carry forward into the present add to this tense, moody, and unpredictable novel. Dramatic revelations and several solid twists keep the reader guessing.

The Windfall is a charming, heartwarming, and at times, hilarious story of an Indian family that becomes extremely wealthy overnight. When Mr. Jha makes a fortune on his website, he grows dissatisfied with the small home and crowded neighborhood that he and Mrs. Jha have shared for many years. They move to an enormous mansion in an affluent neighborhood, but somehow, it does not bring the contentment they seek. Even the Swarovski crystals on the new couch don’t feel good. The Jha’s son isn’t helping, either, by flunking out of American university and dating the wrong girls. A romantic secondary story line featuring a young, beautiful widow who gets a second chance at love is another highlight of this delightful novel.

THE WINDFALLDiksha Basu

“ Culture and capital clash in Basu’s charming, funny debut . . . and the result leaves readers laughing and engrossed.” — starred, Publishers Weekly

A heartfelt comedy of manners, Diksha Basu’s debut novel tells the story of a family discovering what it means to “make it” in modern India. Mr. and Mrs. Jha had settled comfortably into their golden years, pleased with their son’s acceptance into an American business school. Then Mr. Jha comes into an enormous and unexpected sum of money. Hilarious and wise, The Windfall illuminates with warmth and charm the precariousness of social status, the fragility of pride, and the human drive to build and share a home.

THE STORM KINGBrendan Duffy

“ An elaborately layered, creepily atmospheric story that blends haunting legends and the psychological terror of a murderer on the hunt.” — starred, Booklist

After a tumultuous youth marked by his inexplicable survival of a devastating tragedy, Nate McHale left his Adirondack hometown of Greystone Lake and never looked back. Fourteen years later, he’s a New York City surgeon, devoted husband, and loving father. Then the disturbing news that a body was discovered in the forests around Greystone Lake finally draws Nate home. In the haunted landscape, a hurricane bears down and acts of violence escalate. Without a doubt, a reckoning is coming.

HEAR MY HEARTWhat I Would Say to You

Billy GrahamWith an Afterword by Rick Warren

America’s pastor has gone home. But his lifelong message, his passion for the gospel, and his compassion for people still echo. Sit

down with Billy and hear, in his own words, what moved his heart. The convictions he abided by. The reasons and regrets behind some of his decisions. And the wisdom he gained in his century on this earth. Hear My Heart also presents stirring tributes, collected over many years, from those who knew Billy best in all the seasons of his life.

Howard Books, an imprint of the Atria Publishing Group, announced on February 27 they would publish Hear My Heart: What I Would Say to You, a posthumous book by Billy Graham on March 6. Howard acquired the rights to publish the book owned by Christianity Today in 2012, with the understanding that it would be published upon Graham’s death.

Thorndike Press is pleased to be publishing this title in large print. We also have several of Billy Graham’s backlist titles in print.

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ADÈLE BEDEAUA Historical Thriller by Raymond BrunetGraeme Macrae Burnet

“ Riveting . . . [Burnet] revisits the physical and emotional terrain mapped by Georges Simenon but explores this classic turf in distinctive fashion.” — Wall Street Journal

Socially awkward and perpetually ill at ease, Manfred Baumann spends his evenings drinking and surreptitiously observing Adèle Bedeau, the sullen but alluring waitress at a drab bistro in the small French town of Saint-Louis. One day, she vanishes into thin air. Georges Gorski, a detective haunted by his failure to solve one of his first murder cases, is called in to investigate. He sets his sights on Manfred.

FURNISHING ETERNITYA FATHER, A SON, A COFFIN, AND A MEASURE OF LIFEDavid GiffelsAWARD–WINNING AUTHOR

“ Giffels treats heavy themes with a light touch and deadpan humor, drawing vivid, affectionate portraits of loved ones in the richly textured setting of Akron, Ohio.” — Publishers Weekly

From the acclaimed author of The Hard Way on Purpose comes a vibrant, heartfelt memoir about confronting mortality, surviving loss, finding resilience in one’s roots and seeking a father’s wisdom through an unusual woodworking project — constructing his own coffin. With wisdom and humor, Giffels grapples with the hard questions as he and his father saw, hammer, and sand their way through a year bowed by loss.

978-1-4328-5079-1 | $31.99 U.S. Memoir | Releases 5/2/2018

Giffels’ trademark deadpan humor, wise observations and finely crafted sentences turn this work into a profound meditation on life. Giffels hoped to learn some practical skills from his father but ended up learning considerably more. For readers of Daniel Mendelsohn’s An Odyssey.”

— Selector Bill Kelly, Adult Programming Manager for the

Cuyahoga County Public Library

The titular disappearance is secondary to the plot of this brilliantly conceived and cleverly executed cerebral character study cloaked in the guise of a provincial cozy. Presented as a translation of a 1982 French cult classic, Burnet employs metafictional elements to deconstruct the traditional mystery that is a clear homage to Georges Simenon with a dash of Robbe-Grillet. The cat and mouse game succeeds as both an inventive play on literary form as well as a stylish psychological thriller with a twist ending. For fans of Magpie Murders.”

Mary and her husband live in a beautiful antebellum home where odd things have been happening for years. The French Room has become the focal point for spooky sensations. The Ducotes suspect the goings-on are caused by the living. And when a relative of the Catlins is found dead in the room, An’gel and Dickce must sift through a haunted family history to catch a killer.

A MOTHER’S GIFTCharlotte Hubbard

“ An endearing romance. . . . Hubbard provides readers with a comforting tale of love and forgiveness.” — Publishers Weekly on A Mother’s Love

For Leah Otto, marrying Jude Shetler is a long-held dream. She doesn’t hesitate when Jude, now a widower with three children, begins to court her. Other men may not appreciate her tomboy ways, but Jude values Leah’s practical nature and skill with animals. Both enter marriage with joy and optimism. Months later, Leah’s twin teenage step-daughters are pushing boundaries, while her five-year-old deeply misses his mother. Leah, more at ease in a barn than a kitchen, struggles with housekeeping. Then a baby is abandoned on their doorstep . . . filling Leah with renewed purpose and the strength to begin pulling her family together.

But serving iffy clams turns out to be the least of his troubles when Thwing is found sleeping with the fishes under a local lobsterman’s boat. The police quickly finger Julia’s brother-in-law Sonny as the one who cooked up the crime, and Julia needs to act fast . . .
