EL Paso County 4-H Newsletter May/June 2018 EDITION It’s that me of year again! Summer Starts Here’ It’s the 2018 El Paso County Fair theme. Why is the fair theme important? Your barn decoraons might win a prize! 4-H exhibitors are encouraged to decorate with the fair theme in mind. Fair Board representaves will be searching the fair- grounds for the most crea- vely decorated barn and stalls. You could be recog- nized by the Fair Board for your efforts! FAIR parcipaon provides an opportunity to educate the public about the posive value of 4-H that focuses on devel- oping competent, confident, and caring youth. Most importantly, the FAIR is a me to focus on having Blue Ribbon Kids,” not blue ribbon projects. In other words, it is more im- portant to focus on the child and his/her feeling of confi- dence and competence rather than the color of the ribbon they receive for their 4-H project or acvity. Recognion can come in many forms such as ribbons; personal affirmaon from members, family, friends and leaders; or personal feelings of accomplishment. The judging process gives 4-H members feedback on what they did well on their projects and ps on how to make im- provements. In the 4-H pro- gram, the Danish Judging method is oſten used. Danish Judging occurs by comparing a 4-H member’s exhibit against a standard, not against each other. “In the 4-H Program, Blue Ribbon Kids with Red Ribbon Projects are more important than Red Ribbon Kids with Blue Ribbon Projects!” - common 4- H saying What is the purpose of Fair? In the 4-H Youth Develop- ment Program the purpose of FAIR is to provide an opportunity for 4-H mem- bers to “Showcase” their projects and to receive recognion for their efforts of working and learning throughout the year. May 13th Hearts N Hoofs Ranch Horse Show May 15th Deadline for Animal ID’s uploaded in 4HOnline (Swine, Sheep, Goats, Breeding Beef, Llama/Alpaca, Small Animals). The purpose of 4-H Herdsman- ship is to keep exhibit areas clean, safe, and inviting to the public. Exhibitors care for their exhibits; keep stalls, pens, and surrounding areas clean and attractive at all times; and interact with the public by answering ques- tions. Public relations and educating fair visitors about the 4-H program are important components of 4-H Herdsmanship. Good Herdsmanship is important. It reflects the way the exhibitor views his exhibit and the way the general public views the 4-H program, club, and exhibitor. Exhibitors are expected to keep their quarters (stalls, tack areas, walkways, tools, etc.) orderly, neat and attrac- tive as possible. Herdsmanship duties are the responsibility of the 4-H exhibitor. Parents should refrain from doing Herdsmanship duties for 4-H members. 4-H Project Superinten- dents and/or 4-H Club Leaders will often ask 4-H members to sign-up for Herdsmanship duty shifts. Please keep your commitment to perform Herdsmanship duty during the timeframe(s) assigned and let the 4-H Project Superintendent or 4-H Club Leader know if you are unable to keep your commitment due to fair schedule conflicts. 4-H animal exhibit areas are inspected periodically throughout the fair to ensure Herdsmanship is being performed. 4-H members with stac, non-animal 4-H projects must : #1 Pre-enter using Fair Entry and then #2 Bring their items, know as Tabletop 4-H Projects, to the El Paso County Fairgrounds on Exhibit Day. Tabletop projects include: cat displays, foods & nutrion, specialty foods, food preservaon, clothing construcon, arsc clothing, visual arts, ceramics, global cizenship, leadership, leathercraſt, photography, heritage arts, 4-H filmmaking, woodworking, scrapbooking, rocketry, cake decorang, home environment, vet science, horseless horse, gardening, bicycle, computers, electricity, geospaal, small engines, robocs, entomology, outdoor adventures, self-determined, sport fishing, wildlife conservaon, and shoong sports, and New Western Heritage. Cloverbud 4-H members may also submit an item for fair exhibit on Exhibit Day. EXHIBIT DAY (aka drop-off day): Friday, July 13, 2018, at the Whiemore building on the Fairgrounds begins at 8:30 a.m. and items may be dropped off for judging as early as 8 a.m. 4-H Exhibitors are judged on #1 Completed 4-H project item/exhibit and #2 Completed e-record & applicable project sheets. Be sure your e-record is complete and updated. Please check with your project leader or the Extension Office if you have quesons about what to submit for judging. Print them and highlight any pertinent information about your child's project(s). Print your Exhibitor Guide and Fair Premium. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your leader- ship, this includes, Extension Staff and Club leaders. Plan According- Plan to be present as much as possible during the week of Fair. This is a stressful time for both your children and yourself. Give recognition for the hard work leading into Fair. Invite friends and family to be pre- sent for shows and days your child is participating. Be your child’s Cheer Squad! Please arrange for Age appropriate Adult Supervision during the Fair. Leaders, Superintendents, and Fair staff are not available to supervise members and siblings. 4-H Leaders and Superintendents are Volunteers and most have children of their own who are also preparing exhibits for Fair. Schedule “shifts”, check-in regularly and be present. Please support your Leaders in their daily tasks. “Sit on your hands” - By the time Fair approaches your child is as prepared as he or she is going to be. Let the experience of show- ing/exhibiting his/her project to the 4-H Judge be a learning experience with the Judge as the teacher. Allow mistakes and learn from the experi- ence. Fair is not the time to sit on the edge of the show ring or in the audience to tell your children what they did wrong. Let the experience of being judged and being part of the Fair experience be a “teachable moment.” Provide support to all 4-H members and leaders - Again, 4-H Leaders are volunteers, and most likely a 4-H parent as well! Let the leader know you can help. Leaders are spending long hours at the Fair and need relief time, so please be there to help. Be a positive role model and a team player - The purpose of the 4-H program is to pro- mote positive youth develop- ment and teach life skills. Please be a positive adult role model for your children and others. Please be aware that 4-H members, leaders, parents, and other adults participating in 4-H activities are expected to follow the 4-H Code of Conduct. Follow- ing the 4-H Code of Conduct includes abstaining from illegal behaviors, use of alcohol, illegal or illicit drugs, and tobacco during 4-H events and activities. !!Most Important!!- HAVE FUN- This is the best time to enjoy the Fair, the animals, the rides, the projects and the time spent with Family. !!!Colorado State 4-H Conference!!! June 19-21, 2018 (El Paso County conference delegates will leave for CSU on 6/19 and will return the evening of 6/21) What is it? EDITION

It’s that time of year again!

‘Summer Starts Here’

It’s the 2018 El Paso County

Fair theme. Why is the fair

theme important?

Your barn decorations might

win a prize! 4-H exhibitors

are encouraged to decorate

with the fair theme in mind.

Fair Board representatives

will be searching the fair-

grounds for the most crea-

tively decorated barn and

stalls. You could be recog-

nized by the Fair Board for

your efforts!

FAIR participation provides an

opportunity to educate the

public about the positive value

of 4-H that focuses on devel-

oping competent, confident,

and caring youth.

Most importantly, the FAIR

is a time to focus on having

“Blue Ribbon Kids,”

not blue ribbon projects.

In other words, it is more im-

portant to focus on the child

and his/her feeling of confi-

dence and competence rather

than the color of the ribbon

they receive for their 4-H

project or activity.

Recognition can come in many

forms such as ribbons;

personal affirmation from

members, family, friends and

leaders; or personal feelings of

accomplishment.

The judging process gives 4-H

members feedback on what

they did well on their projects

and tips on how to make im-

provements. In the 4-H pro-

gram, the Danish Judging

method is often used. Danish

Judging occurs by comparing a

4-H member’s exhibit against

a standard, not against each

other.

“In the 4-H Program, Blue Ribbon Kids with Red Ribbon Projects are more important than Red Ribbon Kids with Blue Ribbon Projects!”

- common 4-H saying

What is the purpose of Fair?

In the 4-H Youth Develop-

ment Program the purpose

of FAIR is to provide an

opportunity for 4-H mem-

bers to “Showcase” their

projects and to receive

recognition for their efforts

of working and learning

throughout the year.

4-H Herdsmanship

When some people

hear the term Herds-

manship they think

“barn duty.” Herds-

manship from a 4-H

perspective is more

than caring for your

4-H project animals. The

purpose of 4-H Herdsman-

ship is to keep exhibit

areas clean, safe, and

inviting to the public.

Exhibitors care for their

exhibits; keep stalls, pens,

and surrounding areas

clean and attractive at all

times; and interact with the

public by answering ques-

tions. Public relations

and educating fair

visitors about the 4-H

program are important

components of 4-H

Herdsmanship.

Good Herdsmanship is

important. It reflects the

way the exhibitor views his

exhibit and the way the

general public views the

4-H program, club, and

exhibitor. Exhibitors are

expected to keep their

quarters (stalls, tack areas,

walkways, tools, etc.)

orderly, neat and attrac-

tive as possible.

Herdsmanship duties

are the responsibility of

the 4-H exhibitor. Parents

should refrain from doing

Herdsmanship duties for

4-H members.

4-H Project Superinten-

dents and/or 4-H Club

Leaders will often ask

4-H members to sign-up for

Herdsmanship duty

shifts. Please keep your

commitment to perform

Herdsmanship duty

during the timeframe(s)

assigned and let the 4-H

Project Superintendent or

4-H Club Leader know if

you are unable to keep

your commitment due to

fair schedule conflicts.

4-H animal exhibit areas

are inspected periodically

throughout the fair to

ensure Herdsmanship is

being performed.

4-H members with static, non-animal 4-H projects must : #1 Pre-enter using Fair Entry and then #2 Bring their items, know as Tabletop 4-H Projects, to the El Paso County Fairgrounds on Exhibit Day. Tabletop projects include: cat displays, foods & nutrition, specialty foods, food preservation, clothing construction, artistic clothing, visual arts, ceramics, global citizenship, leadership, leathercraft, photography, heritage arts, 4-H filmmaking, woodworking, scrapbooking, rocketry, cake decorating, home environment, vet science, horseless horse, gardening, bicycle, computers, electricity, geospatial, small engines, robotics, entomology, outdoor adventures, self-determined, sport fishing,

wildlife conservation, and shooting sports, and New Western Heritage. Cloverbud 4-H members may also submit an item for fair exhibit on Exhibit Day.

EXHIBIT DAY (aka drop-off day): Friday, July 13, 2018, at the Whittemore building on the Fairgrounds begins at 8:30 a.m. and items may be dropped off for judging as early as 8 a.m. 4-H Exhibitors are judged on #1 Completed 4-H project item/exhibit and #2 Completed e-record & applicable project sheets. Be sure your e-record is complete and updated. Please check with your project leader or the Extension Office if you have questions about what to submit for judging.

ONLINE El PASO COUNTY FAIR PRE-ENTRY, tentatively opens May 21, 2018, - Tabletop 4-H members must indicate the intent to enter a static exhibit in the El Paso County Fair by submitting pre-entry information into an online program called Fair Entry (Fair Entry Orientation will be offered once in May on 5/22 at 4 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. and once in June on 6/13 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., all to be held at the CSU Extension Office). Please RSVP to attend the Orientation as we have a limited number of computer stations.

All 4-H members pre-entering via Fair Entry will be scheduled for an interview time with a Tabletop Judge. An interview with a Judge is not required, but recommended. 4-H members not available for an interview need to drop off exhibit items at least one hour before their scheduled interview time to ensure the item is judged. Please note the Fair Entry deadline is Friday, June 15, by midnight. The online program will close to new entries on June 15, at midnight.

Be in the KNOW- Read the

Print them and highlight any

pertinent information about

your child's project(s). Print

your Exhibitor Guide and Fair

Premium. Don’t be afraid to

ask questions of your leader-

ship, this includes, Extension

Staff and Club leaders.

Plan According- Plan to be

present as much as possible

during the week of Fair. This

is a stressful time for both

your children and yourself.

Give recognition for the hard

work leading into Fair. Invite

friends and family to be pre-

sent for shows and days your

child is participating.

Be your child’s

Cheer Squad!

Please arrange for Age appropriate

Adult Supervision during the Fair.

Leaders, Superintendents, and Fair

staff are not available to supervise

members and siblings. 4-H Leaders

and Superintendents are Volunteers

and most have children of their own

who are also preparing exhibits for

Fair. Schedule “shifts”, check-in

regularly and be present. Please

support your Leaders in their daily

tasks.

“Sit on your hands” - By the time

Fair approaches your child is as

prepared as he or she is going to

be. Let the experience of show-

ing/exhibiting his/her project to the

4-H Judge be a learning experience

with the Judge as the teacher. Allow

mistakes and learn from the experi-

ence. Fair is not the time to sit on

the edge of the show ring or in the

audience to tell your children what

they did wrong. Let the experience

of being judged and being part of

the Fair experience be a “teachable

moment.”

Provide support to all 4-H

members and leaders -

Again, 4-H Leaders are

volunteers, and most likely a

4-H parent as well! Let the

leader know you can help.

Leaders are spending long

hours at the Fair and need

relief time, so please be

there to help.

Be a positive role model and

a team player - The purpose

of the 4-H program is to pro-

mote positive youth develop-

ment and teach life skills.

Please be a positive adult

role model for your children

and others. Please be aware

that 4-H members, leaders,

parents, and other adults

participating in 4-H activities

are expected to follow the

4-H Code of Conduct. Follow-

ing the 4-H Code of Conduct

includes abstaining from

illegal behaviors, use of

alcohol, illegal or illicit drugs,

and tobacco during 4-H

events and activities. !!Most Important!!-

HAVE FUN- This is

the best time to enjoy

the Fair, the animals,

the rides, the projects

and the time spent

with Family.

!!!Colorado State 4-H Conference!!! June 19-21, 2018 (El Paso County conference delegates will leave for CSU on 6/19 and will return the evening of 6/21)

What is it? State Conference is held at the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins and is for 4-H members ages 14-18 (4-H age). The conference is designed and developed by a committee of 4-H Agents and State Youth 4-H Officers. The conference hosts speakers, state contests, hands-on learning workshops, international exchange information with those youth/young adults who have traveled abroad, campus tours, a banquet, awards ceremony, and a 4-H dance. Registration runs about $250 for delegates not competing in a contest. Why should I attend? Because it is a BLAST! Not only do you get to visit a world renowned college campus, you also get to experience campus life by staying in the dorms, getting to know CSU grounds, and eating in the dining hall! The workshops are designed to help you explore new experiences and enhance your 4-H knowledge by Making the Better Best . “It’s like nothing you’ve experienced. It opens a lot of oppor-tunities for the future. You meet other kids from different areas and kids with similar and different passions.” - Callie R. 4-H Alumni What is it Offering? Workshops include: Civic & Leadership, College of Engineering, Little Shop of Physics, Python (The language), Stadium Tour, From Ewe to You, Livestock Judging and how to Reason, Equine Form and Function and many more! Who’s the Chaperone?: Emily Killeen, 4-H Agent, will be the El Paso County 4-H delegation chaperone. Additional official adult chaperones will be designated by the CSU Extension Office if needed. Housing: Sleeping arrangements will be by age and gender designation. Youth members will be housed with youth in the dorms. Adult chaperones will be housed with adults. The State 4-H Office will assign which area or areas of the dorm the El Paso County delegation will be staying. Conference Environment: Please Note - This conference exposes 4-H member delegates to CSU campus life. 4-H member delegates must be responsible for finding their way to meals and activities. Ability to read a campus map and follow a conference schedule is essential. Consider before registering for this opportunity, 4-H member delegates should exhibit a level of maturity that will allow them to be successful in this environment. State Contests Held at State Conference: Consumer Bowl, Consumer Choices, Consumer Skill-a-thon, Horse Judging, Hippology, Horse Demo, Horse Public Speaking, Horse Bowl, Livestock Judging, Livestock Bowl, Parli-Pro, Impromptu Speech, and Pre-pared Speech.
