The Reverend Lynn Orrville

Changes, changes! As I write this, there are people

here working on trees, on the ramp footings and on new secu-

rity for St. Andrew’s. Please watch your email and your mail

for information about codes for the locks and other infor-

mation. For the time being, we will continue to use the key in

the lock box for the office door, but come mid-May, we will

be switching to the key pad for entry into the office.

Throughout the Psalms, there are references to safety

and security. God is our refuge, our stronghold, and it is in

God’s care that we find safety. The world is a treacherous

place, according to the Psalms. Even when we walk through

the darkest valley, in death’s shadow, we don’t fear evil be-

cause God is with us, comforting us.

It is interesting to me that the gospels do not speak of

safety. Jesus never makes us promises about safety. I wonder

why that is. It certainly isn’t because the world is any safer

than it was in Old Testament times. Jesus’ own crucifixion

reminds us that terrible things can happen. Obedience to God

put Jesus in conflict with the world, and death was the result.

Our obedience to God will place us in conflict with the world.

Our safety is not the absence of harmful things; rather, our

safety is in trusting in God to be our refuge.

As Christians, we are to live without fear, being wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

In other words, we are to be wise to the ways of the world and take precautions, while at the

same time being pure in our dealings with others. We are not, though, to trust in our precau-

tions, but in God. That is the hard part.

Grace and peace,

Lynn+

God’s peace to all,

Last month I was away and unable to get anything written by the deadline for the Net-work’s publication. It is interesting being away for the Lenten season. Last year we were gone for the end of Lent and Easter in a mostly Catholic country, where the observance and celebra-tion of the seasons was quite exceptional and moving. It was also very familiar.

This year we were in a mostly Muslim country, a very different experience. The striking thing for me was the interest the Muslims we met had in our religious observance. I had several long conversations about what I believed and what they believed. Our mutual curiosity became quite a bond. At first, I was quite put off by the call to prayer, it seemed loud and in our faces, so to speak. As time went on and I learned about it, I began to anticipate it and enjoy hearing it. I think I could say it made me smile and, in some ways, feel more a part of the culture.

Certainly, many mosques are just as beautiful and architecturally magnificent as some of our cathedrals. We experienced many very old mosques, cathedrals and temples. One temple had been a Christian church before becoming a temple. What I am trying to point out is what a wonderful experience it was to be in a situation where everyone was very accepting and willing to try on new experiences. Some ideas, beliefs, people and experiences were liked and others not so much, but there was always respect. That respect & acceptance allowed everyone to get along. It was a very different learning experience, and a wonderful one.

It is amazing how God works through so many different people in so many different ways. We at St. Andrew’s are so very lucky, but we have so very much yet to learn. It is won-derful to have so much to look forward to. Spring is on the way, and my hope is that we will all grow as much as springtime does.

St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea and

Concerts by the Sea

On Sunday, May 20, at 3:00 p.m., St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea and Concerts by the Sea will present Sympatico Jazz. Sympatico Jazz is a local group consisting of five edu-cators who also happen to be jazz musicians. They have been playing together for several years, including many performances in the Boston area, and are excited to be bringing their music to Little Compton. Dr. Maggie Rizzi, the bass player, lives nearby and will be joined by four of her musical colleagues. They will be playing some jazz standards, some “gypsy jazz“, and some original composi-tions. They will also talk a bit about the various musical

styles on the program. The group consists of keyboard, bass, guitar, violin, and drums. I hope you will join us for this afternoon of what is sure to be an engaging and toe-tapping good time! Donations are accepted at the door. Bring your friends!

Treasurer’s Report

(Return to page 1)

Living in our beautiful and peaceful corner of the world, we don’t think about some of the terrible things we see on TV happening here — and it is true that they are very unlikely to happen here — but in these times we do need to be as prepared as we can.

Homeland Security contacted St. Andrew’s and suggested that occupant and building safety and security practices should be

reviewed on a periodic basis. They provided an on-site interview and walk-through in order to assist St. Andrew’s in making improvements in these areas.

The major finding from this review was that building access control should be improved. Examples: The church office doors were both solid and thus office occupants could not see who was entering the office until they were inside. The cypher lock on the office door was deficient in that it had only 5 buttons (only 120 possible combinations) and the code was rarely changed. The rear lower level door key was kept in a magnetic container just outside the door.

St. Andrew’s leadership has decided that these vulnerabilities must be addressed, but in a way that preserves the openness of the facility to support church and community functions. They initiated a study effort to recommend changes and the results of that study have been presented to Leadership and approved for implementation.

The following changes have been suggested to enhance our safety and security. We’ll discuss these on Sunday May 6th. Please give us feedback.

• Access Control: It is important to be aware of who is entering our church and to have a degree of control in granting access. For the office, both solid doors have been replaced with doors with glass panels so visitors can be observed from the inside. The outside door is fitted with a touchpad lock and a video doorbell. The outside door will be normally locked and everyone that needs church access on a regular basis will have a 4 digit access code. If someone needs access but does not have a code, they ring the doorbell and either Alicia or Lynn+ can see and talk to the person and unlock the door from their desks. The entrance on the lower level on the east side that is used mostly by the AA groups will also be fitted with a touchpad lock. The lock codes will be changed on a periodic basis. We will move from the key lock to the touchscreen lock on May 14th.

The ushers are aware of who is entering the church for services. They will close and lock the main doors 10 minutes after the service begins and will remain vigilant in case a parishioner arrives later. They will also check to be sure the other doors are locked during the services.

• Deterrence: Video cameras have proven to be the most effective deterrent to bad behavior. Four outside cameras have been installed to provide coverage around the church. These cameras will not be monitored on a regular basis, but do record video for 5 days in case an event needs to be reviewed.

• Planning & Coordination: It is important to plan for unforeseen events and to ensure local first responders are in sync with these plans and are familiar with our facility in case of emergency. We have met with the Little Compton police and at their suggestion, have prepared an Emergency Action Plan to document roles and responsibilities and actions to be taken in case of an emergency situation. This plan will be sent to every parishioner so that we all are aware of what to do “in case”.

During a typical Sunday service, you will most likely not notice anything different. These modest changes will, however, make you safer and better prepared to respond in an emergency situation. It will also benefit parishioners and staff who are in the building during weekdays. Please contact the office if you have any comments or suggestions for improving our safety and security. As Hébert said: “We are all in this together.”
