It’s Time to Pray…

By Pastor Jeong Park It’s time to pray…

As I mentioned in my sermon a couple of weeks ago, in few days, the judicial council, our denomination’s “high court” will meet and begin a “hearing session” for a declaratory decision for Bishop Karen Oliveto’s election. The session is scheduled on April 25th in Newark New Jersey and the final decision will be made by the end of this month.

Some of you have heard the news that the hundred official delegates of the Western Jurisdictional conference (our Cal-Nevada Annual Conference belongs to the Western Jurisdiction) elected the first openly lesbian Bishop Karen Oliveto (I was there as one of delegate reserves) in Scottsdale, Arizona on July, 15 2016. It was a historical moment and a bold act in our denomination. Now Bishop Karen Oliveto serves Mountain Sky Episcopal area which covers Colorado Denver and the Yellowstone area. But the South Central Jurisdiction annual conferences made a petition and request to the judicial council for making a final decision whether Bishop Karen Oliveto’s election, consecration and assignment is lawful under the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church or not.

The Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church released a letter to every clergy yesterday in regard to the Judicial Council’s action for a declaratory decision. The letter says, “There is a great interest, disagreement and anxiety about the anticipated decision of the judicial council of the United Methodist Church …We are being called upon in this critical moment to tenderly hold the unity and mission of the church in our hearts and hands…God will work in and through each of us in our respective context to project, a non-anxious presence, to point to a future beyond this immediate decision, and to honor the various manifestations of the Spirit reflected in our far-flung Connection.”

In this challenging and transitional moment, I humbly lay down my judgmental attitude, my own righteousness but pray to God for His will and discernment through the judicial council. I also ask you to join me with your prayer for the judicial council members and their spiritual discernment process so that they will make a right decision for the whole denomination and our future as well. Truly it is time for us to pray for the Holy Spirit’s wisdom and guidance in time of need.

In Christ,

Work Day is May 6! Looking forward to seeing everyone out at 8:30 am to help with projects. On the top of the list is completing the metal fence on the west side of campus. Beechwood North Owner’s Association has donated the full amount of the cost of materials to the church and we, in turn, are purchasing the equipment and will be completing installation. Also on the roster are supervised kids projects and work on the rose bushes. (Work Day information also on page 1.)

Just a quick note related to Jiffy Fixers. Volunteers are ALWAYS welcome! Tuesdays at 9 am until 12 noon! Upcoming projects include securing Wesley windows, sprinkler maintenance and painting the protector guard on the new hot water line on the east side of the sanctuary.

Take a walk to the Little Methodist School sandbox area. Eric Cedarstrom, an Eagle Scout candidate from another troop has installed four benches in the West sandbox under the tree for members and students to relax after school or church. He did a beautiful job and the benches are made of Trex board so they will last for many years!

See You on Work Day!

Do you like to cook? Do you often have leftovers? If you say yes to either question, you would be a welcome addition to our Meal Brigade.

Sometimes our church members have surgery or are ill or for some other reason are not up to fixing a meal or getting out for one. They are so thankful to the wonderful Fair Oaks UMC cooks who not only bring a welcome meal, but bring a visit as well. What a great way to let folks know we care about them.

If you are interesting in joining the Meal Brigade, sign up next time there is a request or contact Nancy Klanjac at 967-5427 or [email protected] to let her know that you would like to help.

Turning points in the life of a believer.

In chapter three of his gospel John records the nighttime visit of Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin. He probably didn’t want the fellow members of that small, ruling council to know what he was doing. (See John 12:42.) He sought out Jesus to examine His claims. Jesus gave him much to ponder.

Nicodemus made some progress on his life journey. In John 7:51 he timidly asks a question in defense of Jesus. His fellow members of the council put him down. I wonder if, later in life, he may have regretted his timidity and wished he had been more outspoken.

Maybe he was already regretting it on that late Sabbath Day afternoon when he teamed up with Joseph of Arimathaea to care for Jesus’ body. Nicodemus must have been a man of means. The large amount of embalming ointment made from myrrh and aloes could not have been cheap. (John 19:39)

Do you have similar turning points in your Christian journey? Read of these turning points in John’s Gospel and reflect on them. How do they compare to the important events in your Christian life?

“Jesus resurrection fulfilled promises of the past, addresses the needs of the present, and changes our eternity.”

During Children’s Time on Easter Sunday, we talked about miracles. There are big miracles like Jesus healing the lame and the blind, really big miracles like Jesus’s resurrection and forgiving us for our sins, and everyday miracles like seeds. The kids were able to take home a packet of seeds so they could grow their very own miracle. And guess what? They did! Jacob and Joshua’s seed has sprouted!

By Dedra Beauchamp

There are extra seed packets available on the Heifer Sharing Table in the Narthex if you want to grow your own everyday miracle!

Catching up with some of our tourists after returning from Wesley's 18th century England (where Methodism methodically began) was interesting to hear their responses. Central to this formation of our faith was the participation in small groups to perfect our faith and grow. Maybe you will sense this in their responses…

"This Lenten small group study was promoted as an opportunity to take a journey, tracing John Wesley's life and travels spreading the practices of ‘Methodism’ and growing in his faith. I enjoyed the videos that took us to many of the places Wesley lived and preached, as well as the discussions that helped us better understand what we were reading and how it applied to our own lives and faith." Cheryl Raney

"Our group was amazing! I really enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot. I became closer to the members of our group. It is an amazing experience"

"I really appreciated this group because it gave me a greater understanding of the foundations of Methodism."

"I enjoyed the study and picking a time convenient for me made it easy!"

"The small group experience has given me the opportunity to learn and reflect as well as listen to others feelings and experiences."

"It was an excellent opportunity to learn about our church's early history. John Wesley had many trials and persevered to triumph. There is great value in small groups."

"I love the intimacy of the small group, the chance to get to know the others, hear their stories and share mine. It is part of knowing my church. Learning about Methodist history and tradition has taught me a lot about why I am the way I am and why I have made many of my choices in life." Lida Clemo

"We are promised that where two or more are gathered in His Name, He will be there also. So, committing to meet weekly with our spiritual companions to study and strengthen our faith and dedication to serve others is an intentional way to practice our Christian faith, to support and encourage one another. In a small group individuals feel more free to share experiences, ask questions, and grow in faith. A small group allows each to see more clearly God's love and spirit in the eyes of others. Do join in this opportunity."

"Spending time with my church family in small groups rewards me with new friendships and provides me with a non-judgmental environment which helps me grow in my faith."

"This was a wonderful refresher course. It gave me a chance to get acquainted with folks beyond what Sundays can do."

"I have always liked Adam Hamilton’s writing. The way he has in illustrating each chapter makes it easy to follow along."

"REVIVAL motivated me to learn more about our Methodist church and the small group movement allowing others to express their thoughts to each other. "

"If you missed this opportunity to join in this small group series I pray for you that is offered again!"

"This is the second Lenten season I have been a part of the small group series at FOUMC. I have enjoyed the fellowship and am reminded that we are a connectional church. These classes have been a blessing to me as we shared our faith journey together. FOUMC is truly a place where I can feel the Spirit of God" Ada Raney

"Revival must be continued today. John Wesley called us as Christians to go to places 'outside' of Grace as he mentioned in 'fighting against injustice'. Don't give up even if it feels uncomfortable. We live our faith with our head and heart and hands. God uses us as a means of grace."

"It was enjoyable, even fun, and I learned a lot."

"Small groups are central to Methodism for a reason. They bring people closer together and provide challenges and support to grow in the practice of our faith."

"It was great to learn our beginnings as Methodists and to stop being an ALMOST CHRISTIAN. My goal is to be an all-in Christian." PJ Brantley

"I like to know what makes people tick. These sessions gave me that plus! Our leader came prepared and provided additional information. I also liked the small group dynamic. If a class is more than say 6, it is harder to get around to everyone’s insight." Lisa Burkhart

If you missed this opportunity and would like to join this particular “tour,” we might be able to run it again this Summer. Speak to Mary McCollum if you are interested.

Revival by Adam Hamilton

From Cokesbury.com:

“If you’ve taken a class using Adam Hamilton’s The Journey or The Way, you know how his DVD sessions seem part travelogue—part history lesson—a lot Bible study. In Revival, he once again uses his captivating, storytelling talent to take you on a six-week journey through England tracing the life of John Wesley. Wesley’s message and his faith continue to speak to twenty-first-century Christians, calling for a revival of our hearts and souls so that our world might be changed. His story is our story. It’s our heritage, it defines our faith, and it challenges us to rediscover our spiritual passion.”

May’s Book Club selection is

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.

From amazon.com: “Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him ‘the bitter neighbor from hell.’ But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

Bring a sack lunch and join us on May 22 at noon in the library.

Fair Oaks United Methodist Church Business Directory

Q: Why do we have a business directory in a church newsletter?

A: The donations provided by the businesses listed help offset the cost of publishing a monthly newsletter.

Local Contact: Cheryl Raney, [email protected]

Q: Who are the people behind these businesses?

A: They are members or regular attendees who consider FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.

Q: Can I be listed in the business directory each month?

A: Yes! Contact the church office at 961-6631 or [email protected] to learn more.
