Report Cards

Third Quarter Report Cards are Out

By now you should have received your child’s

third quarter report card. This report card is the

most important one of the year. It is an

opportunity to see what your child needs to do to

finish the year successfully. Does your child

need to study hard to maintain academic success

or are they in jeopardy of failing and need to

study harder to make sure they are passing all

their classes? The fourth quarter work will

determine their final grades and what will go on

their transcript, so it is extremely important they

stay on top of their grades.

If you are asking yourself what you can do to

help your child, it is very simple. Have a

conversation with them. If they are doing well,

let them know you are proud of them and tell

them to keep up the great work. It may not seem

like they are listening, but deep down, they will

hear what you are telling them. If they are not

doing well and are in danger of failing, you can

still do something. Take a look at School Tool

to see how your child’s grades have gotten to

this point. Is it because of low test scores or not

handing in homework? Make an appointment

with Ms. Kokoletsos and your child’s teacher.

Once you know the issue, help your student

change it. Make sure they study hard for their

remaining tests and start checking homework.

Do what you have to do as a parent before the

end of the school year. Lastly, find out what

happens if your child does not pass the

class/grade. It is important to have this

knowledge in order to make informed decisions.

New Policy: No Animals on School

Property/Grounds

The Board of Education has passed a new policy

prohibiting animals on school property/grounds.

This is in response to our insurance company’s

recommendation. They are seeing an increase of

people bringing their pets to public events. A

copy of the policy is included in this edition of

the Jottings.

On Wednesday, April 5th, the cast of “Willy Wonka” participated in the first annual Best of the Best

Musical Revue, sponsored by a grant from the Charles Wood Theatre. JCS joined Schroon Lake Central

School’s cast of “Beauty and the Beast” for a wonderful night of musical theater. Students performed 30

minutes of highlights from each of their shows, and were presented with an award and reception by The

Tannery Pond Community Center. Students were able to interact with other student Thespians and enjoy

the stellar performances from a neighboring school. It was a great night for everyone involved.

Battle of the Books 2017

On Monday, March 13th, 2017, for the third year in a row, JCS sent grade level teams from third through

sixth grade to the Washington Saratoga Warren Hamilton Essex BOCES regional Battle of the Books

competition held at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. With the gaining interest and

popularity of the event, this year’s competition marked the highest turnout to date with 470 students on 61

teams who came together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge on ten books they were

assigned to read. Students dedicate time outside of their regular curriculum classes to read ten books,

collaborate with their teammates, train with their coaches, and prepare for this event for months.

“The Battle of the Books is an important event because it gets kids to read. The books are outside of the

classroom curriculum, so it is voluntary on their part,” WSWHE School Library System Coordinator

J’aime Pfeiffer told The Saratogian Newspaper. “These are kids who are enthusiastic about reading, and

about learning!...I think one of the reasons that it has expanded is the librarians and teachers who are the

coaches are passionate about reading, and have continued to encourage students to be part of this event.”

Steve Sheinkin, a local author

who wrote The Notorious

Benedict Arnold: A True Story

of Adventure, Heroism and

Treachery which is part of the

fifth grade reading list, is on a

promotional tour for his newest

book and was unable to speak

at this year’s event. However,

Mr. Sheinkin still took the time

to send the students a special

message about the value of

reading and writing, and give

an inside peek to his newest

book.

Summer Youth Swim Program at Ski Bowl Park

The Johnsburg Youth Committee is offering an afternoon swim program this year from 12:30

PM to 2:30 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This swim program will follow the

usual morning Youth Program held from 9 to noon. The swim program will run from July 11

through August 10 under the direction of Susanne Hayden. Bus transportation will be provided

from the swim program at 2:30 PM, there will not be bus transportation provided to the

program at 12:00 PM.

The swimming instruction will be a progressive program which teaches the basics and then

adds strokes and safety techniques while building stamina. Kids will earn a certificate for each

level of achievement. It takes most swimmers about 12-13 sessions to advance one level. If

there is interest, there may be opportunities for intermediates to satisfy the requirements of an

advanced swimmer and/or prepare for a lifeguard certificate. Along with lessons, there will be

free swimming and supervised free beach playtime.

In order to better determine numbers of swim program participants and thus, the number of

staff required, we need you to sign up in advance. Swim spots will not be guaranteed if your

child doesn’t attend the first week without notifying the Swim Director. Please sign up by

either returning the slip below to Laurie West in the Principal’s Office or by calling Joann

Morehouse, town Hall at 251-2421 by June 15th. Further details will follow upon signing up.

New! Johnsburg Central School Policy

SUBJECT: ANIMALS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS/PROPERTY

To help maintain safe and healthy conditions for students, staff and visitors of the Johnsburg

Central School District, it shall be a violation of District policy:

a) For an individual to permit animals on any area of the school grounds/property.

b) For any individual to permit a dog/animal on any of the public recreation areas on school

grounds/property.

When an uncontrolled dog or other animal is discovered on school grounds/property,

Administration will call appropriate animal rescue personnel or local animal warden.

Animals may be permitted in school for instructional purposes. It is Administration's

responsibility to ensure that there is an appropriate educational purpose before any animal is

allowed in a classroom. Animals are not to be transported on school buses.

1. Parents may be consulted to determine any special consideration needed for children who

are immunocompromised, have allergies, asthma, etc.

2. When an animal is allowed in the classroom it is the teacher's responsibility to maintain

the cleanliness and upkeep of the animal and its living environment.

School staff will be responsible for the proper control of animals brought to school for

institutional purposes and Administration will be responsible for ensuring the effective

protection of children when animals are in the school.

In addition, those individuals with disabilities who are covered under the ADA requirements for

Service Animals shall be exempt from the terms of this policy.

Also, under certain circumstances, police and other emergency services may require the presence

of animals in performing their duties (such as bomb or drug searches). This decision will be

made on a case by case basis as determined by school Administration and/or the responding

emergency agency.

This policy will be disseminated to the community and school personnel through normal

channels of communication.

Board Members

Election of three (3) Board Members

Erwin Morris:

I was elected to the Johnsburg Central School Board in May 2008. I graduated from JCS in 1994 after

my family moved from downstate New York. I attended Pace University and Regents College and hold

a Bachelor’s degree in Business. Currently, I am earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

I am the co-owner of Morris Management Group/Gore Mountain Realty with my brother Joseph

Morris. I run our business in North Creek and employ many local people.

I reside in the hamlet of Wevertown with my wife Rebecca and our two children who are both enrolled

in Johnsburg Central School.

My proudest accomplishment is the JCS Pre-K program. As almost everyone is aware, the program has

been an amazing success. I have been very dedicated to my work on the Board with school security,

successful management of finances, and with the Pre-K program.

I currently serve as the Board Vice-President.

Tom Ordway:

I am a lifelong resident of North Creek where I reside with my wife, Pattie and son Jon who is currently

working for Johnsburg EMS as well as North Warren EMS and Mohawk EMS; and my daughter, Maria

who is in 8th

grade at JCS. I have two other children who have already graduated from JCS. Thomas is

a Glens Falls Fireman and Robert is employed by CP Rail as a foreman in the Signal Department.

I have been involved with JCS as a school board member for over 25 years. I have been very active in

the community as a Little League coach, scoutmaster, soccer coach, Fire Dept., EMS, and many more

activities.

I am retired from Canada Pacific Railway where I was responsible for all training on the northeast

division of CP Rail. As a CP manager, I was responsible for the entire budget for all training on the

northeast division.

I believe we provide our kids at JCS with a quality education at a fair cost. As always, the students are

my number one priority.

Board Members – con’t.

Tara Sears:

Having lived in North Creek my whole life, it has made me have solid roots and a commitment to my

community. I am also an alumnus of JCS, as well as three of my sons, and currently, I have one son and

a granddaughter attending.

After graduating and becoming a Nurse, I chose to work in North Creek at ATCNRC as a Nursing

Administration Assistant, staying in my hometown and being a part of the community and taking care of

the residents there, a number of them being North Creek residents. I retired from the North Creek Fire

Co. after 26 years of service as well as Johnsburg EMS after 14 years. I also just completed 22 years in

scouting in North Creek having my youngest son, Cole, crossing to Boy Scouts. My husband Paul is

retired from the US Army and is a corrections officer in Fort Ann. We chose to raise our children in

North Creek because of the strong school system and close knit community.

I have been on the Johnsburg Central School Board for nine years; this is the end of my third term. I am

honored to be a part of such a great school system. I was proud to be on the committee for technology

last year and watching all those students this fall with their new chrome books was astonishing,

especially the elementary students. I look forward to seeing all of the changes coming with our building

project and continuing to be a part of making Johnsburg the best school for our students it can be. The

students of JCS are our future and I am proud to be a part of that. I hope to be re-elected this year, so I

can continue to serve on the board to help make academic and fiscal decisions to benefit the students and

the taxpayers.

The Johnsburg Chapter of Imagination Library is beginning its third year of providing free quality children’s

books to any child living in the Johnsburg school district. To date, nearly 80 families have enrolled in this

program. Besides living in the school district, the only requirement is that your child ranges in age from newborn through

their fifth birthday. Once a month, your child will receive a beautiful children’s book that is age appropriate

delivered to your home. This program is now in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia and was founded by

Dolly Parton. The cost of our children’s literature has been underwritten by the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack

Foundation as well as the Charles R. Wood Foundation. We appreciate their generosity and hope you

choose to enroll your child. Please don’t miss out on taking part in this great opportunity and enjoy reading time with your child!
