Special News of the Month
We conducted three vocation
camps in which nearly 47 young

enthusiasm. However, after
evaluating various aspects of
qual i t ies required for the
candidates, 32 of them were
selected.
The first camp, a combined one
for the diocese and province, was
organized by Niranjan Minj in
collaboration with Fr. Linus
Kindo. It was held from March 30
- April 3, 2016, at St Joseph's School, Bhilai
Pahadi, Jamshedpur. The aspirants from five
different dioceses attended the camp. We thank
the resource persons, Frs. George Fernandes,
Joseph Surin and K M Joseph, who
enlightened the campers on topics such as; "the
call of God", "the Society of Jesus" and “the
mission of Society.” A special thanks to our
novices, Telesphore Toppo and Ashish Digal
for assisting the campers. The second vocation
camp, conducted by Schs. Nelson Glen, Ranjit
Kerketta and Fr. Niranjan Minj, was held from
April 3 - 6, 2016 at Asha Deep, Pathalgaon. Of
the four candidates attended, three were
selected. The third vocation camp
was held from April 13 - 16, 2016
at St Xavier's Church, Tangrain
and was attended by 16 of which
14 were selected. Frs. Mukti
Clarence, George Antony,
Benedict Kujur, Niranjan Minj,
Bernard Surin, Cornelius
Lakra and Sch Ranjit Kerketta
worked hard to make the camp a
successful one. The generosity
and magnanimity of Tangrain
Jesuit community is laudable.
thOn 10 April, at 4.00 pm, more
than a hundred young people
gathered for a SARVA MILAN
at the St. Joseph's Community
College, Mango. They came
from all quarters of Jamshedpur
city. The young people came
alive as Fr. Jerome Sequeira
began his talk on Afghanistan
and then went on to explain how
the media fools us into thinking
that all Afghans are terrorists;
and that all Afghan men sport
long beards and wear turbans.
Beware of stereotypes. He then
went on to talk about how
Sadbhawana can be brought
about on the world scene.
There were questions galore; but due to lack
of time, this activity of the evening had to be
curtailed. Jerome was truly an ace! He had
the students eating out of the palms of his
hands. You were simply fantastic, Jerome!
Fr. Pancras also attended; thus showing his
solidarity with the college-going crowd,
Karim City College Boys; Co-operative
College Hostel Boys; TMH Nursing
College; Abdul Bari Memorial College;
Candidates of the SCJM and Sacred Heart
Sisters. The list is impressive. Total: more
than a hundred.
Tea and snacks were served to all corners. At
this part of the program, there was plenty of
fraternizing. A truly pleasant sight for the
eyes of one and all. The payment of the bill
for the tea and snacks and the hire of the
Community College hall came
from an admirer of SARVA
MILAN.
Emile has been teaching, once
again, in the Co-operative
College Boys' Hostel. A very
rewarding experience for all
concerned. This last is judged
by the fact that Emile gets an
occasional glass or two of bale
fruit juice; calculated to beat the
heat… There are requests from
various groups, schools, and
other institutions asking for
Emile's services; by way of
talks and seminars; and group
counse l ing sess ions . The
requests are incessant.

19 Jesuits from 9 provinces
gathered for Roots & Wings, a
deeply intense refresher program
in Ignatian Spirituality for four
weeks that was topped off with an
Ignatian Retreat. It was a grace
filled moment for re-charging- for
looking at our 'call' AFRESH.
Yes, we were Jesuits coming to it
from nine provinces from diverse
b a c k g r o u n d s , a g e s a n d
ministries. Jamshedpur Province
was represented by Frs. Panneer
Selvam and Eric Cassel. At the
end of the 5 weeks of Roots &
Wings, we could proudly say we had become
'Friends in the Lord'.
The venue was Sacred Heart College,
Shembaganur. There could not have been a
better way to beat the heat. It was a programme
hammered out meticulously by JIGSA. But
from start to finish it was Fr. Devadosa
Muthiah who put it together. The Superior of
Sacred Heart College, Fr. Christie and the
Minister, in paricular, Fr. Patrick Ravi, left no
stone unturned to make sure we were well cared
for. There were inputs from Resource Persons
steeped in everything Ignatian: Fr. R. C.
Chacko on the Autobiography of St Ignatius,
Fr. Jossie D'Mello on the dynamics of the
Spiritual Exercises, Fr. Jerry
Rosario on GC 31-35 and
Mission Today, Fr. Antonysamy
on the Constitutions of the
Society of Jesus, Fr. Ignatius
Tete, on the Spiritual Diary of St.
Ignatius, Fr. Michael Alosonai
on the letters of St. Ignatius,
leaving Fr. A. J Thamburaj to
guide us through the retreat.
At the end of four weeks we were
steeped in every aspect of Ignatius
living and working and praying.
We had seven books that we read
from cover to cover. It was a

News from Our Houses and Around
The entire Amda Christian
community joined Basahatu
for Holy Week services. The
arrival of 15 relatives of Fr
Clement on Easter day, added
to our joy of celebration. They
came, they saw and they
marveled the work that Fr
Clement does in the area. On
the same evening Fr Panneer
left for Chennai to attend the
Ignatian spirituality course, 'Roots and
Wings', in Kodaikanal. On 3 April, 'Mage
porob' was celebrated in Basahatu Parish
and Fr John Sumbrui, the main celebrant,

him more teeth to build up an organization.
He also attended a two day

On 6 April Provincial, Fr. George
Fernandes inaugurated and
blessed the new magnificent and
gigantic senior section in the
presence of staff and students,
Jesuits, principals, priests and
nuns of Dhanbad, Jamshedpur
and Chaibasa area. The students
expressed their joy and happiness
through a mind-blowing cultural
program. The guests were served
with a high tea at the residence.
In ter-Nobi l ian Basketbal l
Championship, sponsored by
Indian Oil Corporation, was organized by our
school on 16 & 17 April. It was a proud moment
fo r us when our t eams bagged the
championship trophy for the second
consecutive year. Well done boys and girls.
ASISC Zonal Cricket Tournament was held on
23rd April. Kudos to De Nobili School, FRI for
being winners, and De Nobili School, Mugma
for being runners up. The school team did their
best, however lost in the Semi Final. Apart from
the above mega events, the school also
organized the inter school sit & drawing
competition, bulletin board competition and
Maths & EVS quiz.
The School witnessed change of
time schedule due to the sudden
increase in the temperature.

Berkeley NeelamSharing of the Easter Joy
“We are the Easter people and
Alleluia is our song” (Pope John
Paul II), denotes our graceful and
joyful Easter experience in
Berkeley, California. At the
personal level, we were given
adequate spiritual preparation
for the celebration of Paschal
mystery of Jesus Christ our
Lord. We were very much
challenged and overwhelmed by
the call of Pope Francis -
“…come out of ourselves and
open our hearts to Him.” We, the
Indian Jesuits had a meaningful liturgy led by
Fr. Sudhir Kujur, SJ (RAN). After that we had
a fellowship meal to celebrate and share the
joy of Easter. On Easter Sunday, we had a get-
together with North Indian group in Silicon
Valley, San Francisco. It was another occasion
to share the Easter-Joy and know one another.
Neelam organised a one-day retreat for a
group of children of St. Joseph's Parish
(Oakland diocese). He enlightened them on
the meaning of Lent and experience of God's
Mercy in our day to day life. At the end, it was
Neelam, who was enlightened more, by the
innocent faith of the children which also
doubled his Easter-joy.
As we are nearing the end of the
Spring semester, life in the
school is becoming very intense.
Along with our studies, we are
also making a lot of plans to
spend the summer vacation
fruitfully and productively.
Neelam, being the sub minister,
is trying his best to acquire
California Driver's License so
that he can serve the community
better.
reading not to fill the head but to
fill the heart – affective reading
that gave us a greater degree of
familiarity in the way God
accompanied St. Ignatius in his
journey towards God and now
accompanies us. The good work He has begun
in us, He will bring it to completion. Each
Resource Person, in his own inimitable way,
made us feel so at home with the reading
material so that it could percolate into our inner
selves, for us to taste and relish and share in the
Ignatian mysticism. At the end of
these five weeks where days and
nights went so fast, all one can say
only “dil maange MORE”. The

to attend a JEA level meeting on Jesuit Schools.
He also conducted an orientation program for
the teachers of Holy Cross School, Bokaro.
De Nobili School, Sijua-Koradih
On 13th April we had Choral recitation nd
competition for Std KG to III. On 22 April
there was a Prefect Investiture ceremony for
junior school. It is a band of 32 students who
help in maintaining discipline and various
activities of the school. On 23
April, there was a Bulletin board
contest for Std IV to X. On the
same day Mrs. Julie Sebastian
was given tearful farewell by the
staff and students for her 34 long
years of dedicated service to the
DNS.
“How can we claim to be
building a better future without
thinking of environmental crisis

excluded…?” (Pope Francis,
Laudato Si, 14). De Nobili
campus is witnessing what it has
not witnessed for last 60 years -
the acute water shortage. The cry
of the mother earth is heard and
felt at every nook and corner of
our country and world at large as
the mercury sores to the
unchartered regions. The
district administration has
ordered schools men to readjust
the school timing by now many
times so that the students can
reach back home by 10 am
before it is too hot. To the
surprise of all of us and of all
those who have gone through De
Nobili, we are begging for water
from all the possible sources
wherever it is available even if in
a small quantity to keep the
school going.
We have almost completed the
plus two admissions and the
classes stared on 11th April. There was an
orientation for the incoming students and their thparents on the 9 of April. The school
basketball teams (boys and girls) participated
in the inter De Nobili basketball tournament at
Bhuli to be defeated by Victor's boys. History
repeats itself- in the battlefield of tough
competitions where smaller kingdoms rise up
to defeat the bigger ones. So Victor, prepare
your boys to accept an impending defeat
gracefully in the upcoming T20 cricket
tournaments. Preparations for prize night
(30th April) are already in full swing and the
teachers are working round the clock.
Mr. Muktesh's (our coworker in school) wife
needed an immediate medical care and
treatment and at the request and appeal of the
principal Fr. Pius, from the students and
teachers, the school raised a substantial
amount towards the cause.
Fr. Alex joined the community on 7 April and
he is seen busy as usual with numbers. Bulky
files and papers are getting compressed into
small files and pen drives. In a short period of
time he has completed visiting all the unit
schools. Fr. Alex went to stay at Gomoh for
three days to put order in their accounts.
Surprisingly Alex was back in the community
on the next day. How could you do this Alex?
Hats off to you Alex. For Gerry
our outgoing treasurer it's the
season of farewell dinners and
parting gifts. On 23 the school
bid farewell to Gerry and
officially welcomed Fr. Alex
who is the new treasurer of DNJ.
In a special assembly the staff
and students thanked Gerry for
his works. The school will
remember you always for your
contributions small and big.
Fr. Tony s ta r ted the new

by Fr. Augustine. Fr. Shanti
completed the family blessing.
He also gave a delicious supper
to all the principles who were
invited for Fr. Gerry's farewell.

the results of the new admissions
were also announced. As the
school was going to reopen on 4
April, the hostellers took the
hostel forms after collecting
their results.
31 March and 1 April were fixed
for new admissions. This year,
the school is taking admissions
only up to fourth standard. In all we have
taken 75 admissions. Still many are coming
fo r the admiss ions bu t go ing back
disappointed. This year, it is nice to see, the
parents are taking keen interest in educating
the smaller ones.
On 2 April, a staff orientation programme was
conducted by Fr. Walter Kongari. He
elaborated on the qualities of good teachers.
And on 4 April, the new session started in the
school. At present, the school has 705 students
and the hostel has 245. Due to extreme heat,
we have decided to run the
school from 6 to 10.45 a.m. And
because of the danger of heat
stroke, the hostellers are not
allowed to get out from the
rooms till 3.30 p.m. As Fr.
Romanus Jojo is going for

the school and financial matters
in order. In his place, Sch.

in the school and the hostel.

Sebastian Francis Shaw of Lahore
Archdiocese who reached Delhi
on 18th of April, 2016, along with
16 of his priests and one catholic
advocate. The 'Peace Mission'
presented each of them with a
memento and a CD on Jesus in
Urdu. From Delhi they went to
Agra, Jalandhar and Amritsar and
crossed over to Pakistan through
the Wagah Border. Their visit was
a symbolic union of two Churches
of Pakistan and India which
would certainly strengthen the
Peace Mission, to bring about
'Peace' between India and
Pakistan.
From Delhi I went to Madurai in
Ta m i l N a d u t o m e e t t h e
Provincial of De La Salle
Brothers in order to explore the
possibilities of connecting them
to De La Salle Brothers of Faisalabad in
Pakistan. While in Madurai, Peace Mission was
introduced to St. Mary's Jesuit School who will
start 'Peace Club' in the school after the summer
holidays. The Superior of IDEAS, Fr. Aloysius
Irudayam, a former Provincial of Madurai,
introduced me to St. Joseph's Senior Secondary
School, run by St. Joseph's sisters who were
very happy to welcome the 'Peace Mission' to
their school and promised to talk to the
Principal of Fatima College in their efforts to
spread the wings of the 'Peace Mission' to the
College. Thanks to Sr. Principal and the
Superior. Their enthusiasm to introduce 'Peace
Education' is really praise worthy.
In Ernakulam, Kerala we had a meeting of
Peace Mission in Jyotis, the Jesuit house in
Kerala. Five High Court Lawyers and eleven
others retired persons like Vice-Chancellor and
Professors participated in the meeting. Thanks
to the Jesuit Community of Ernakulam for their
excellent hospitality and for making all the
arrangements for the meeting. The interest
shown by the part icipants was very
encouraging.
I also visited Bishop Joseph Karikkassery who
was very happy to know the
progress made by the 'Peace
Mission' and promised to help to
promote peace. A High Court and
S u p r e m e C o u r t l a w y e r ,
Dr.Vincent Panikulangara was
very happy to meet me and know
about 'Peace Mission' . He
cherished his memories of close
contact with a number of Jesuits
including our Fr. Jim Keogh of
happy memory, Fr. P.D.Thomas
and so on. He also promised to
take the Peace Mission ahead.
After visiting St. Joseph's College
in Bangalore to initiate the Peace
Mission there, I will be back to
Gurukul on 27th Apri l to
participate in the 'Graduation'
ceremony of the seminarians to be
held on 28th April which will be
conducted by the Chairman, Most
Rev. Bishop Ignatius Loyola
Mascarenhas.
As the tradition of the house, the
Superior, Fr R Tony renewed the
act of consecration of the house
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on
the first Friday of the month. The
Biblical tradition as well as
Jesuit tradition repeated once
again, as our novices returned
from Village experiment with
f u l l o f f a i t h f o r m a t i v e
experiences. Big thanks to all
our Parish Priests and Jesuit
communities who took the
trouble to place our novices in the villages and
accompanying them. It was FORMATION IN
MISSION indeed!! On 8 April Novices did
their monthly recollection on the theme THE
EXPERIENCES – CHARACTERISTIC OF
JESUIT VOCATION. This enabled the
novices to interiorize the experience of the
village experiment. On 9 April at 06.30 p.m.
we had farewell cum welcome mass for the
outgoing minister Fr. Jerry Kujur and in
coming minister Fr. James Bara, followed by a
short cultural program to welcome Fr James
and for expressing our gratitude to Fr Jerry for
his valuable services to the
community. The ten second year
novices have started giving
introduction during the daily
Eucharist. On 12 April Fr George
Joseph from XLRI organized a
three days course on “Leading to
Positive Change” in Upasana.
There were 21 participants but
on the second day the venue was
changed to XLRI due to excess
heat.
Jesu Bhavan R TonyFormation in Mission
One of the first activities of the
new academic session was the
formation of the Students
Council, the elections and
appointments of the school
President and House Captains.
At the investiture ceremony,
Principal Fr. Amal handed over
the school flag to the School
President who in turn handed over the house
flags to the House Captains. After the oath
taking ceremony, Amal exhorted the
students to be responsible and disciplined. stOn 1 April, Amal went to Vishakapatnam
for the zonal ICSE executive committee
meeting. Due to the extreme heat wave
conditions all over Odisha, the Government thordered all the schools to be closed from 12

students to think big, dream big
and set high goals and work
hard to achieve them. Fr
Principal, after introducing the
plus 2 faculty to them, talked to
them about the history and
spirituality of the Jesuit Order and Jesuit
education. He explained to them the values
Loyola school stands for and encouraged
them to become men and women for others.
Loyola school had its annual prize nite for
the junior and senior section in the Fasy
auditorium. The children were thrilled to go
up on the huge stage to receive prizes in the
presence of a packed huge auditorium. It was
a moment of glory and a wonderful
experience for all the prize winners. The
function was impressive and inspiring.
We had the first managing committee
meeting of Loyola School. The committee
consists of Fr Rector, Fr Principal, junior
school coordinator and Registrar as ex-
officio members and representation from
among the teachers, Alumni and parents.
The committee has 11 members with Fr
Principal as Chairman and registrar as the
secretary. It is only an advisory committee.
Several excellent and novel ideas came up
during the meeting to make Loyola a leading
school.
The Maharastra hitkari mandal organised a
special musical programme to celebrate their
centenary in our Fasy auditorium for the
people of Jamshedpur. It was an excellent
show and all lauded the perfect sound, the
world class acoustics and the beautiful
interior of the auditorium.

coordinator of JYOTI. We
appreciate immensely your
generosity, Fr Pancras! We also
thank regent Ranjit for the
wonderful work he did as
coordinator of JYOTI last year.
Fr Xavier Ekka, our parish

School: The academic year 2015-
16 ended on March 31 by
officially declaring the results.
Many students did not turn up to
get their report cards and almost
30 students took their TCs this
year. The admission for the new
academic year began on 23 March
without a significant rush. The
effect of drought is felt very early
this year and hence the hostellers
had to be sent to home due to lack
of water. The new academic year
began on 4 April but within a
week we had to declare the
holidays as the per Government
order, due to extreme heat in the state.
Community: The Holy Week services were
held in all the mandalis and it was a great solace
to our efforts to see the full and active
participation of the faithful and sharing the joy
of resurrection in singing and dancing. Two of
our novices: Pradeep and Amit strengthened
their faith experiences being with the people
and returned from their respective mandalis
leaving behind lasting spiritual impressions
among the people. The visit of Fr R Tony,
novice master, revitalized the spirit of the
novices. The Superior, Joe went to Pathalgaon
for SAP and returned with enriching
experiences as a member of Universal body and
meeting old soul-mates after many years. Fr.
Victor Joseph is back and back,
back with a lot of hope. Welcome
Fr Victor as the Headmaster of the
school. On 2 April, community
and the extended community
members, Sisters, went for a
p i c n i c t o M u n i g u d a a n d
witnessed the vibrant life of the
Christian community and also
relived the pain of riots while
being in the burnt Church
building. The vibration of the
Christian community only shows
that the blood of the martyrs never
goes waste.
Tony, synonyms with Emotional
Intelligence, is available where it
requires the most. On April 1-2,
he offered two days seminar for
the 25 teachers of Bishop
Hartmann Girls School, Kurji,
Patna helped them on working
with emotional intelligence in
pursuit of integrating Socio-
Emotional Learning in the
academic curriculum of their own students.
SXCE hosted the NAAC peer team visit on
April 11-13. Under the leadership of Tony, a
hectic preparation led up to the final show of
actual visit and it was one of Kabhi Khushi
Kabhie Gham as the proceedings touched the
ebb and flow of our emotional upheavals. On
19 and 23, April 2016, at Navajyoti Niketan,
Patna, Tony spent two days with pre-regents
and shared his expertise on the Milestones of
Human Development and the
other on Integral Pedagogical
Paradigm (IPP). He ended the
month at St. Karen's Secondary
School, Khagaul Road, Danapur,
on 30 April. He gave a talk to
Karen's fraternity on Modern
Trend in Education, followed by
Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist
for the academic year 2015-16.

campus very ultra-modern and found the students
brilliant in the questions they put to him.
