1. Choose whole foods over processed foods. They generally are composed of one ingredient, have beenrefined as little as possible, and don't include added salt, carbohydrates or fat. Whole foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes.

2. Get more of your food from plants. Eating plant-based foods and limiting meat can boost health outcomesand possibly add years to your life. Fruits and vegetables are associated with a lower risk for heart diseaseand cancer, and they help you stay full longer. In a study published in the American Journal of ClinicalNutrition, participants who ate meat less than once a week had a significantly lower risk of death overtime than those who ate it more often. Cutting back on red meat can cut your risk of dying early, theNational Cancer Institute has found.

3. Slash sugar. It may be one of the best things you can do for your health. The American Heart Associationrecommends no more than nine teaspoons a day for men and six for women.

4. Eat nuts. They are one of the best snacks. In one study, participants who ate a handful of nuts dailywere less likely to die for any reason over a three-decade period.

Registered dieticians and nutritionists recommend nuts as part of a diet for a longer life, according to a2013 New England Journal of Medicine study.

5. Water, coffee, tea and red wine are fine. The vast majority of the long-living people were found to drinkthese liquids. Voluminous research has shown the health benefits of drinking plenty of water, especiallyas you age, when it's easier to become dehydrated. Meanwhile, coffee is an antioxidant. Antioxidants arelinked to lower rates of diseases and conditions.

5 Food Rules for a Longand Healthy Life

For some 150 years since the end of the Civil War, decorating the graves of military service membershas been the primary activity on Memorial Day. Most cemeteries place an American flag on eachservice member's grave regardless of how long ago he or she died.

Memorials in the form of a cross are called intending crosses.

At Arlington National Cemetery, the President places a wreath on the monument known as TheTomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring those soldiers who, in the chaos of war, could not beidentified and are 'known but to God.' The tomb stands on a hill at Arlington, overlookingWashington, D.C.

As visiting cemeteries on this day became more common, the graves of deceased family memberswere also decorated. Many individuals remember visiting the graves of grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles on this one day a year.

And as cremations and natural burials become more popular, online memorials and tributes printedin newspapers are also becoming more common. At natural burial cemeteries, laying of gravestonesor memorial plaques is often not permitted.

During the 150 years since the custom began, almost every family has lost someone, if not a familymember, a friend who was lost is remembered.

For all, a prayer for those who are gone is a fitting memorial.

Resident Spotlight ~ Sue Ahlf

On April 30, 1930 Mary Sue Morrison was born in Santa Monica, CA. Mypresent name has been changed, from a marriage, to Sue Ahlf. I am the only member ofthe family who is a native Californian. I was raised mostly in Piedmont, CA to my widowed

mother and she raised myself, sister and brother alone as my father was killed in 1939.One of my fondest memories is that of being a playmate with Clint Eastwood who was a

neighbor on my street! I graduated from Anna Head Private School, attended UC Berkeleyand as a freshman was a Secretary of a class of 6,000. I pledged the sorority ADP,

married a Sophomore, had a son and daughter and did not get my degree until I went backat 50 with my daughter. My life has been blessed with a second husband for 50 years in

which our family was combined so we had 15, 14, 13, 12 and 5.I began my career as a swim lesson teacher at a private school in Danville 1955 and

learned to coach synchronized swimming. This sport has been my passion as a coach, judge and contributor to many places in the world. In 1968 my daughter and I began the

the Walnut Creek Aquanuts. We gleened swimmers from several clubs and acquiredcoaches who brought the team its first National title in Hershey, PA in 1972. My daughtercontinued to swim in Santa Clara and was part of the US National Team until she retired.

She assumed the role as Head Coach and I assisted and did all the necessary business offinding space and water to expand the team. Today the team has over 100 swimmers,

many novices to National and Olympic team members. In 1980, we moved to Hawaii and I spent my time with clinics on all of the islands and

assisted with having a pool built in Kona where two Nationals have been held and Icontinued to judge at National meets. The most exciting part of this job was seeing thesport admitted to the Olympic games in LA in 1984. Our swimmers won Gold! In 1988 Iworked at Atlanta and was there to see our team win Gold with a perfect score of 10! In

1992 in Barcelona, Kristin Babb (taught her to swim) brought home the gold.We left Hawaii in 1985 and began our trip around the world. Our hosts were mostly

swimmer folks so we were blessed with housing in exchange for clinics. We saw England,Scotland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, France, Hong Kong and Singapore. We lived inRoseville for 15 years and watched the kids grow and moved to our new home in 2015. We

hope to bring some of our Olympians here for a visit before the games in Rio.

Today I walked into our living room, sat down and picked up one of two books which have been onour coffee table for months. During the day, I seldom take time to simply sit down and enjoy a goodbook. But today my eye was drawn to the treasure that has been lying on the glass table. It has alight green cover that is curling upward now and the personal inscription inside has faded, for I’vehad it over twenty years. It is a treasured possession because Helen, the woman who gave it to me,had been an older woman who worked at Nordstrom’s in Vancouver, Washington, and sent it to meafter her retirement with a note that is still tucked into its pages. She writes that she thinks of meevery time she looks through it, and now she wants me to have it. She inked in a large asterisk onthe photos and poetry she loved the most. Helen died shortly after her retirement but I think of herwith great feeling even though we were not friends in the traditional way.

This book titled, , with photos by the well known photographer,Dewitt Jones, and includes quotes from famous people, has lain there month after month. The onlytime it is touched is when the dust cloth caresses it. But today the covers were opened and the greattreasures came tumbling out and I wondered --- how many books or photo albums do you have thatmay be crying to be opened so that they can spill the abundance of warm memories trapped betweenthe covers?

Through the years I have created at least thirty photo albums, usually one per year during the timethat Tom and I have been married. When the children were still at home I used to change coffeetable albums every month so we could enjoy the photos together and reminisce. However, now thechildren have homes of their own; and we live such busy lives that we seldom think to sit down withan album and let the memories flow. And when they come to visit from out of state, looking at photosdoesn’t seem to be a priority.

In each book or album that you treasure, that your fingers have lovingly caressed as you securedphotos onto the pages so that your life will not be forgotten by the next generations, are the treasuresof a lifetime waiting to be enjoyed repeatedly with someone dear, or by yourself. Open the pagesslowly, take time to think back to the event, relive it, savor it, and embrace it with open arms. I findthat photos bring back memories that had been long forgotten but can be refreshed as though theyhappened yesterday. You need not limit this to photos albums. Perhaps you have treasured scrapbookstucked away someplace, filled with programs, tickets, pressed flowers, treasured greeting cards, andmore. We have several “Memory boxes” filled with scrapbooks or zip lock bags that bulging with ayear’s worth of memories, with the year written in black on the outside. Don’t wait any longer toenjoy what you’ve collected. “Night is drawing nigh---“
