QUAVERS - Page 1 - May, 2016 From the President May flowers, finally! Congratulations to all who were involved in the Carnival on April 23rd, I heard some amaz- ing feedback from parents and students. One of my new families went for the first time, and the mother was so im- pressed with how easy it was to figure out what to do and where to go. She couldn't stop raving about what a fun event it was, and how great it was to see how much the kids had learned. Another mother was a first-time parent vol- unteer, and had so much fun that she committed to helping again next year! I am sure you all have your own stories of the success of the Carnival for your own studio. Special thanks to Debbie Florian and Dianne Johnston for their fearless leadership! We are coming up on my favorite meeting of the year! Diane will have more specifics in her article, but if there is one meeting you make it to all year, it should be this one. This is where you make your voice heard on what you love about our programs, and what you would like to see hap- pen in the future. During the business meeting, we will also be voting on the slate of new board members, and showing our appreciation for this year's board and commit- tee chairs. Please make sure to come vote. We are blessed to have such an active membership, but only the voices that speak are heard! Melanie Harris, President From the Vice President Happy May Everyone! The end of the program year is upon us. May 13 is our End-Of-Year Program/Events Re- view. This is our opportunity to celebrate the successes of the year AND make suggestions for improving programs/ events for next year. It's also a good time to recommend new KMTA programs/events for next year. So please come with your ideas, recommendations, and especially praises to the meeting on May 13, 2016. Let's celebrate together! As usual, we will meet at Ted Brown Music in Silverdale - 10:00 a.m. General Business Meeting and 10:30 a.m Year In Review. See you all there! ! *Parent volunteer Tess Doornink for organizing our lunch and snack program. With the help of parent volun-teer Laurene Ross, their cheerful demeanor kept the lunch line flowing. Thanks to Patti Ray for arranging for face-painting—a big hit with the kids and such fun. Leslie De-vine again provided very welcome and necessary technical support preparing registration cards, master lists and scoring sheets. Thanks to Marilyn Karr for ordering and organizing ribbons. Our appreciation again to Dianne Johnston as our liaison with Gateway. Thanks to Diane Layton for organizing and supervising all of our student volunteers, and to Ginni Hodder for her welcoming smile and supervision at Registration.

!The lunch-t i m e i m -provisation activity was very well re-ceived. It ran for a full 60 m i n u t e s w i t h s t u -dents taking advantage of the oppor-tunity to im-provise on stage with a

teacher. They loved it! I personally spoke to 3 different stu-dents who, after being strongly encouraged to give it a try, came away from the experience with triumphant smiles.

One even asked if it was okay to do it again, and proceeded to give an encore performance! Many thanks to Leslie De-vine and Melanie Harris for facilitating.! All of our teachers who worked the different events and exams did a tremendous job, getting all those students through efficiently and in a cheerful manner. Huge thanks to Jane Melin, Marilyn Karr, Leslie Devine, Diana Lund-gaard, Cynthia Rose, Rachel Steinlicht, Mary Grant, Dianne Johnston, Krista Seely, Julie Mandery, Megan Hennings, Joann Richardson, Sarah Silvia, Daphne Blan-chard, Sally Carey, Sarah McGrath, Melanie Harris, Laura Meredith, Melanie Kurtzbein, Diane Layton, and Carmen Gorak. Our wonderful parent/adult volunteers ran registration and assisted checking students in for exams and writing the ribbons. Tremendous gratitude to Michelle Knott, Tarra Forsythe, Kathy Gallagher, Julia Reydell, Lucia Lara, Samara Stageberg, Brian Vaught, Luy Rash, Wanda Faber and Carol McClung. Also special thanks to Bruce Grant, our official photographer; Mike Florian and Jim Johnston for help with setup, cleanup and keyboard transportation (and Mike for pizza delivery J).! ! There was a lot of setup and decorating to do on Friday—special thanks to those who came out and made quick work of transforming the Gateway School Gym for our Carnival. We also appreciated everyone who pitched in to take down decorations and put everything back to order. So many hands, so many smiling, cheerful faces—it was great to have so many actively involved, and definitely lightened the load for all of us. I apologize if I have over-looked anyone who helped out!! We are most sincerely and deeply grateful to Gateway Fellowship for opening their facility for our use for this event. The staff were so gracious and helpful, and gener-ously willing to accommodate our needs.! Tests will be available at the May 13 KMTA meeting. Teachers will be able to take them home and go over them with their students. All tests will need to be returned to Dianne Johnston by May 30 to be shredded, but that will hopefully provide ample time. The WSMTA Musicianship Examinations certificates and honors seals will hopefully also be available at that meeting so teachers will have them in time for recitals. We plan to have a debrief session with opportunity for suggesting further changes or additions for next year’s Carnival, so please jot down your thoughts in preparation for that meeting.! To sum up, Dianne and I are so thankful for our KMTA colleagues, for your willing, helpful attitudes and profes-sionalism. We are blessed to have each other! We hope you all had as much fun as we did! If you weren’t involved this year, we encourage you to check out the handbook on the WSMTA website and consider participating next year. The more the merrier!!
