From the Rector: SabbaticalOne of the wonderful benefits in every Episcopal priest’s contract is a sabbatical. A sabbatical is a three-month period of time off for rest and creativity, apart from the joys

and challenges of work as a parish priest. In the diocese of West Tennessee, the bishop wants his clergy taking sabbaticals after six years of service to a parish.

I came to GSL Church & School in the summer of 2010, when our children were in the 3rd and 4th grades. We have been in this lively parish and fantastic city for six years. Beyond the fact that this is the appointed time for the sabbatical, it is a good time in the spiritual sense for me and for the parish, especially as we have undertaken an inspiring renovation of our church in honor of GSL’s 75th anniversary.

During the sabbatical, I am going to do two things: nothing and write a paper. As for nothing, I will be with my family and, occasionally, two of my best friends. I have several trips planned, plus a month with Katherine and our two children in Berkley and San Francisco, staying at the Episcopal seminary there. I cannot tell you how excited I am simply to be with the people whom I love the most, especially at this stage in our children’s lives as Adaline turns 16 and as Evans goes to high school in the fall.

As for the paper, while at GSL, I have published two academic articles in The Sewanee Theological Review, and that work has led to an invitation by the Dean of Virginia Seminary to prepare and present a paper at an academic conference at the seminary on September 11-12. The conference concerns the work of an English theologian named Martyn Percy, and Dr. Percy will be in attendance and will respond to my paper as well as the papers of the other presenters. I am writing about symbols: what they are, what God has to do with them, and how they are universal and, paradoxically, interpreted in very individualistic ways. I am arguing that symbols (for example, bread or darkness) are vital clues in the search for the divine, as well as a big part of all cultures.

I will be away from Memorial Day weekend through Sunday, September 11, returning to the office in the middle of September. I will join everybody on the parish retreat at the Episcopal camp in Mississippi on the third weekend in September.

During this time, GSL will be wisely and gracefully covered. Cynthia Saatkamp, our wonderful senior warden, will chair the vestry. The Reverend Broderick Greer will continue to oversee all of his dynamic work with young adults, and Linda Stine, our trusted (and hilarious!) administrator, will oversee the budgets and buildings, as she already does. The soon to be reverend Amy George arrives on June 5, and I simply cannot wait for her to meet you and vice-versa. Amy will oversee pastoral care, ably assisted by the kind and ever-organized Amanda McGriff, our director of pastoral care. Wesley Emerson will oversee music, of course, but he will not preach in my absence.

I am also happy to announce that the Reverend Andy MacBeth will join the GSL staff as an assisting priest for my entire sabbatical. Andy is the former rector of Calvary in Memphis, and he has served in a variety of parishes and Episcopal institutions. Andy will work part-time, assisting on Sundays and two days a week. Most importantly, Andy is a wise, experienced priest who can help out in some very important ways, especially as a mentor for Amy and as support for Cynthia. Andy’s first Sunday will be June 12, and his last Sunday will be September 11.

I am so grateful for the encouragement of the bishop and the support of the vestry and staff as I take this time. As the parish has heard me say on many occasions, whatever I do well as rector is due in part to the team that surrounds me.

Last but not least, when you called me as rector, the vestry and search committee were crystal clear about this expectation: stay healthy, with God’s help, and love your family. Each year in our mutual ministry review, the vestry and I have a heart to heart conversation about this very expectation about balance and boundaries. After six years, I can say with joy and confidence that I am doing well in this area, with God’s help and your support. GSL is a place and a people who value and support the health of the clergy and staff.

This sabbatical is one outward and visible sign of the wisdom and health of our relationship as a rector and parish. And what I pray for and seek for myself, I pray for and hope for all of you: good balance between work and home, between the work God gives us to do and the kind of people God wants us to become. Enjoy your summer, and you can be sure I will enjoy mine! The Reverend Richard Lawson

The band has performed and created services for a multitude of churches and cathedrals up and down the east coast, including workshops at Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, and Oberlin, and conferences from Los Angeles to London. TJC has performed for the National Council of Churches, Trinity Wall Street, The General Convention and House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and took a tour of England that culminated in the world premier of the group’s own composition, the "Canterbury Jazz Mass," with the choirs at Canterbury Cathedral. May 8—Praise, Protest, and Postmodernism: the Spiritual Journey of U2 with the Reverend Dr. Robert MacSwain

Dr. MacSwain is the associate professor of theology at the School of Theology in Sewanee, Tennessee. His publications include Theology, Aesthetics, and Culture and The Cambridge Companion to C. S. Lewis. From their debut album "Boy" in 1980 to "Songs of Innocence" in 2014, the popular Irish band U2 has taken an unusually serious approach to their music, addressing spiritual, political, and personal issues with insight, candor, and passion. Their journey has taken them from conservative charismatic Christianity to a more open, questioning, and even ironic stance, but without abandoning their basic religious convictions. They thus provide an example of contemporary Christian artists seeking an authentic voice in today’s postmodern culture. In this session, Dr. MacSwain will look at some of the key mileposts of their spiritual journey, hearing and discussing representative songs from along the way.

Pastoral Care Corner

Pastoral Care Requests: To submit a pastoral care request, please complete the Pastoral Care Requests form on the GSL website under the Member Central Tab (www.gracestlukes.org/member-central/pastoral-care-requests). Requests submitted through this online form will be emailed directly to the appropriate lay staff and/or clergy. Alternately, you may call the church office or email Amanda McGriff, Director of Pastoral Care, at [email protected].

May 1st is Gift Card Sunday.

Pastoral Care wil l never stop delivering delicious, home cooked meals to our parishioners in times of need. However, in more and more situations, a restaurant gift card would be the better way to provide care. Many people are on restrictive diets or have food sensitivities or life threatening allergies, and so are understandingly hesitant to accept food made in someone else’s home. Delivering a home cooked meal to a hospital is just not practical, but giving caregivers an opportunity to take a break from the hospital waiting room and go out for dinner could be just what is needed. After a funeral that has brought in lots of family from out of town, a gift card from a local

restaurant would allow everyone to sit around a table together and share memories without having to worry about who will do the dishes.

So Pastoral Care is asking for you to bring restaurant gift cards to church on May 1st. They will be collected in the offering plate at all worship services.

Think about where you would like to go in the above situations, be creative, and show off that famous Grace-St. Luke’s and Memphis hospitality!

If you have any questions, email Juan Fuentes at [email protected] or Amanda McGriff at [email protected].

Mayday May DayPastoral Care Needs Gift Cards

A Time to Receiveby Amanda McGriff

I do not think it is a secret that many of the people who are drawn to pastoral care do not make very good recipients of it. We would much rather give a listening ear, lend a hand or deliver a meal than accept them. It was Thoreau who said, “If I knew for a certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing me good, I should run for my life.” It is much too easy for many of us, myself included, to identify with both the do-gooder and the runner in that quote.

This past month, though, it was my turn to receive, and I decided to receive graciously whatever was offered to me, even if I felt it was something I could have done myself. I looked on it as an experiment, and I was a little afraid of being overwhelmed by the results. It turns out that I was overwhelmed, not in the way that I had expected to be, but by the generosity of those around me. Meals, help with my son, chocolates, rides, watching over me in the hospital, flowers and prayers all poured in from every direction. I have never felt so much a part of Grace-St. Luke’s.

So thank you, both for your care and for the lesson that you have taught me. We are not called to self-sufficiency, but to community, and thanks be to God for that.

As we approach the end of the school year, May is always a bittersweet month because this is the time when we prepare to bid farewell to all of our eighth graders. We are so proud of them and so happy for the time we’ve spent together on their educational journey. We truly believe GSL is their anchor for life, and we can’t wait to see what new peaks they climb in high school, college, and beyond!

As we say goodbye to eighth grade families, we prepare to welcome dozens of wonderful new families to the GSL community. We are already beginning to prepare and look at calendars for the coming school year, and we will have more news next month about faculty transitions and summer facilities updates on campus.

In the meantime, please remember that SummerFest registration is open to all children ages 4-13, regardless of school affiliation. Our weekly camps run from June 6 – August 5, and range from sports, theatre, swimming, to sewing, hip-hop, art, cooking, and more.

School Newsby Thor Kvande

Outreach Ministry

Summer Activities at Memphis Teacher Residency

Memphis Teacher Residency, a GSL grantee, is a faith based organization that trains and nurtures educators for high need urban schools in Shelby County. There is a lot going on at MTR this summer.

–Because summer learning loss contributes considerably to the achievement gap between low-income students and their more affluent peers, MTR will sponsor an academic summer day camp for rising first through third graders at several MTR partner schools. College students with an interest in urban education serve as summer staff in the role of math teacher, reading teacher, or group leader.

–MTR’s 2017 residency cohort starts down the road towards a Masters in Urban Education and positions as teachers. They receive orientation to Memphis and MTR this summer.

–MTRU provides professional development opportunities for the entire MTR community (graduates and alum of MTR’s program, mentors, staff, and teaching colleagues from schools MTR serves) through continuing education. The first session will be July 11-12 and will focus on teaching students who have experienced trauma.

Parishioners can support MTR in a variety of ways including encouraging aspiring teachers to consider applying for a MTR residency, inviting MTR teachers over for dinner or sharing Redbirds tickets and passes to Brooks, Dixon and other venues. If you are interested in supporting MTR please contact MTR Development Director and GSL parishioner Jessica Johnson at 937-4695 or [email protected].

Café du Memphis ~ Overton Park Pavilion ~ May 7, 2016 ~ 9 am–12 pmThe Rotarians and volunteers will be busy serving shrimp and grits, beignets, café au lait, and much more!

The Dorothy Day House of Hospitality is a recipient of GSL Outreach funds for 2016. The philosophy of this orga-nization is families who are able to remain together while homeless have a much better chance of rebuilding their lives after the trauma of losing their home. With the family placed safely together in the Dorothy Day House, parents are bet-ter able to focus on the positive changes that are needed to re-gain their independence. Café du Memphis is a fundraiser benefiting the Dorothy Day House and presented by the Rotary Club of Memphis.

Food Pantry Facts by Juan FuentesThank you to everyone who remembers Food Pantry Sunday every month! Your support helps us keep serving those in need. Whether or not we hear it in the Sunday announcements, we still need your support. Lucy is great at posting a reminder in the Sunday bulletins and eNews as to what we need and the date. We always have the blessings that God sends us, be it a food donation, a financial donation, or a volunteer who comes to help with shopping, or picking up at the Food Bank, or distributing food on Monday or Tuesday, or packing. As stated in the Epistle of James: “Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food and one of you tells them, ‘Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily.’ If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do? In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not prove itself with actions, is dead.” (2:15-17) Food Pantry Sunday is always the last Sunday of the month. May God bless us always!

March Statistics: Number of families served: Number of Families served: 44 households, which include 50 adults, 18 children, and 15 seniorsVolunteer hours: 116 hours, which included 8 hours distributing food, 3.5 hours in food bank pick-ups and shelving, 2 hours shopping and shelving, 2.5 hours cleaning and re-stocking (not including the hours spent by volunteer packers).

Mark your calendar! The last Sunday of the month—May 29—is FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY! We are asking that you bring dried milk, tooth paste, peanut butter, cereal, and hygiene products.

Welcome to our new volunteer: Meondra White. Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, contact Happy Jones at [email protected] or 276-2136.
