Startup SundayStartup Sunday is a periodic meet up where entrepreneurs, talents, funders and startup enthusiasts

come together to share ideas, connect with potential team members and mentors, develop and

nurture products and launch startups. At Startup Sunday, we believe no idea is worth not

considering and we are careful to not intrude and impose our ideas on the entrepreneurs. We

simply create an environment where ideas can be nurtured and entrepreneurs can connect with

the right team members, gain access to opportunities and launch.

SituationIn 2015, we launched Startup Sunday with the 'How to Start a Startup' viewing session; a 20 week

program which included videos from Y Combinator. The event gave us the opportunity to assess

and get a rsthand understanding of the state of the Port Harcourt startup ecosystem.

From our ndings, we discovered that Port Harcourt had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. A number

of factors were lacking including, but not limited to:

The requisite entrepreneurial education that could scale startups to successful

corporations

An innovative approach to entrepreneurship

Sufcient role models

Exposure to local and foreign markets, investors and partners

A strong sense of community and synergy

Clear and attractive laws, policies and tax regimes

These discoveries informed our goals for 2016

Overview

2016 Goals To foster the launch of at least three scalable startups

To foster the scaling of at least ve existing startups

To foster the launch of at least of two local angel investment organizations

To foster synergy between the Port Harcourt Startup Community and local and foreign

investors and partners

To foster synergy between policy makers and the Port Harcourt Startup Community

To foster interactions between the Port Harcourt Startup Community and the local and

international media

To enhance integration into and within the Port Harcourt Startup Community

About Netopps Netopps Concepts Nigeria Ltd is an organization dedicated to building people and systems

in Africa to enable them utilize internet opportunities to solve problems and optimize potentials

in entrepreneurship, digital jobs, and social entrepreneurship.

StartupA company that is in the rst stage of its operations. These companies are often initially bank rolled by their entrepreneurial founders as they attempt to capitalize on developing a product or service for which they believe there is a demand. Due to limited revenue or high costs, most of these small scale operations are not sustainable in the long term without additional funding from venture capitalists. (Investopedia)

Venture CapitalistA venture capitalist is an investor who either provides capital to startup ventures or supports small companies that wish to expand but do not have access to equities markets. Venture capitalists are willing to invest in such companies because they can earn a massive return on their investments if these companies are a success. Venture capitalists also experience major losses when their picks fail, but these investors are typically wealthy enough that they can afford to take the risks associated with funding young, unproven companies that appear to have a great idea and a great management team. (Investopedia)

Angel InvestorAn investor who provides nancial backing for small startups or entrepreneurs. Angel investors are usually found among an entrepreneur's family and friends. The capital they provide can be a one-time injection of seed money or ongoing support to carry the company through difcult times. Angel investors give more favorable terms than other lenders, as they are usually investing in the person rather than the viability of the business. They are focused on helping the business succeed, rather than reaping a huge prot from their investment. Angel investors are essentially the exact opposite of a venture capitalist. (Investopedia)

Seed CapitalThe amount needed to get most businesses off the ground. It is considered a high-risk investment, but one that can reap major rewards if the company becomes a growth enterprise. This type of funding is often obtained in exchange for an equity stake in the enterprise, although with less formal contractual overhead than standard equity nancing. Banks and venture capital investors view seed capital as an "at risk" investment by the promoters of a new venture, which represents a meaningful and tangible commitment on their part to making the business a success. Frequently, capital providers will want to wait until a business is a little more mature before making the larger investments that typify the early stage nancing of venture capital funding. (Investopedia)

Series A FinancingThe rst round of nancing undergone for a new business venture after seed capital. Generally, this is the rst time that company ownership is offered to external investors. Series A nancing may be provided in the form of preferred stock and may offer anti-dilution provisions in the event that further nancing through preferred or common stock occurs in the future. Also known as "A round" or "A round nancing."

Series A nancing tends to occur when the company is generating some revenue from its business model, but rarely will the business be generating net prots at this point. Most series A investors will be venture capital funds or angel investors who are willing to accept the high levels of risk found in these early-stage company investments. As an enterprise grows and requires additional capital, the subsequent rounds of preferred stock issued to investors are called Series B, Series C, and so on. This allows investors in those subsequent rounds of nancing to know where they stand in the hierarchy of claims to future prots. Typically, the business is revalued before each round of nancing, so terms of conversion may be vastly different for different rounds depending on the valuation of the company at each stage. High Networth Individual (HNI)A classication used by the nancial services industry to denote an individual or a family with high net worth. Although there is no precise denition of how rich somebody must be to t into this category, high net worth is generally quoted in terms of liquid assets over a certain gure. The exact amount differs by nancial institution and region. The categorization is relevant because high net worth individuals generally qualify for separately managed investment accounts instead of regular mutual funds. (Investopedia)

Elevator PitchA condensed, easy-to-understand version of a business pitch that is delivered in the time it takes to ride an elevator. Entrepreneurs must be prepared to give a pitch at any time, including during an elevator ride. (Investopedia)

Exit StrategyThe method by which a venture capitalist or business owner intends to get out of an investment that he or she has made in the past. In other words, the exit strategy is a way of "cashing out" an investment. Examples include an initial public offering (IPO) or being bought out by a larger player in the industry. Also referred to as a "harvest strategy" or "liquidity event". (Investopedia)

ScalingThe process by which, a startup expands to reach a larger market and make more prot.

Crowd FundingA practice of funding where small amounts of capital are raised from a large number of individuals in order to nance a startup. It is typically done via the internet.

IncubatorA rm engaged in the business of fostering early-stage companies through the developmental phases until such time as the company has sufcient nancial, human and physical resources to function on its own. (Investopedia)

AcceleratorAn organisation which runs an intensive (often 3 months) program for startups which includes mentorship, educational components, networking etc. and aims to grow the businesses quickly.

Co-Working SpaceA shared working environment, like an ofce, where those coworking are usually working for different organizations though they share the same facilities.

Bootstrap A situation in which an entrepreneur starts a company with little capital. An individual is said to be boot strapping when he or she attempts to found and build a company from personal nances or from the operating revenues of the new company. (Investopedia)

Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)A legal contract between two or more parties that signies a condential relationship exists between the parties involved. The condential relationship often will refer to information that is to be shared between the parties but should not be made available to the general public. Also referred to as a 'condentiality agreement'. (Investopedia)
