If you have any concerns or queries about examination preparation please contact school and we will be delighted to help. Revision also takes place during the school day and there are period 3 and period 6 revision classes at GCSE and A level immediately prior to exams to ensure students are fully prepared and are able to ask any last minute questions. There is a comprehensive revision programme taking place during the holiday week. Students have been encouraged to sign up via the school website and I would be grateful if you would check the programme and ensure that your child is accessing all of the sessions available to them. The programme is designed to ensure that the revision time is maximised and teachers will be able to provide targeted support. Alongside personal study we feel this is the best preparation for examinations and I am sure you will join me in thanking all staff who have given up their time to support our students. However, we have found time to engage in topical issues of the day particularly the EU referendum. We have hosted a ‘Question Time’ type event for ITV News which will be broadcast Friday 27 May at 6 p.m. Campaigners for both ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ were grilled by Sixth Form students who impressed both journalists and panel members with their engagement and knowledge. CONYERS SCHOOL

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

It has been a hardworking term, particularly for those students who are taking their GCSE or A level examinations and we have been impressed by their conduct and hard work so far.

As half term approaches revision should continue to take place on a daily basis. If you have any concerns or queries about examination preparation please contact school and we will be delighted to help. Revision also takes place during the school day and there are period 3 and period 6 revision classes at GCSE and A level immediately prior to exams to ensure students are fully prepared and are able to ask any last minute questions.

Year 8 Learning to Lead Training Conyers School hosted a Learning to Lead training session, which invited staff and students from Northfield Academy and Caedman College to develop future leaders. The training involved all participants, including an enthusiastic Mr Skerry and Mr Ahmed, demonstrate their creativity with a ‘Russian Dolls’ activity as well as learning about agenda setting and creating projects to benefit the school community. The Conyers students, Emily Powell, Jamaal Glanville, Amber Antonopolous, Simon Littlefair-Dryden and Daisy Mellis demonstrated their leadership skills as well as an infectious sense of humour and confidence. It was a great way to establish student leadership within the school and to brainstorm ideas of where student leadership will be headed.

Year 10 Student Leaders Presentations This term Conyers invited the Year 10 students to apply for a Student Leadership position. A Conyers Student Leader not only demonstrates good attitude and behaviour within the school but also contributes effectively both within and outside the school. As part of the leadership process the whole of Year 10 were involved in an activity in which they had to break off into groups within their forms, and produce a two-hour activity for Year 4 Primary School Children. Through a process of elimination eight groups made it to the finals and they had to pitch their innovative and creative ideas to Mr Ahmed, Mr Skerry and Mrs Adam. The commitment, organization and originality that the students showed towards the project were exemplary and both leadership and teamwork skills were demonstrated. In the end there were four groups that went through and will therefore be going to Primary Schools to conduct their activities with Year 4 students within Yarm. The successful groups were:

10AB Sophie Leadbitter, Amritpal Singh, Renee Garbutt, Toni Sullivan and Hollie Nevitt, whose activity is arranged around ‘a day at Conyers’ as an introduction to secondary school.

10BA Jacob Billing, Sam Easton, Tippi Shannon and Jose Clemenson will focus on ‘Art’ based activities to enhance student creativity.

10JT Luke Pettit, Harry Grimes, Lewis Nixon, Jack Colley, Morgan Coates and Tom Magnone have organised a ‘treasure hunt’ to promote team work skills.

10GS Leah Robinson, Sam Raine, Abbie Nolan and Abbas Wajid seek to introduce primary school students to ‘multiculturalism’ and how it impacts on our day-to-day lives.

All student s involved in the presentations have received a Headteacher’s Commendation. Well done to all those who participated! The student leadership process was very successful and resulted in 159 applications. An exciting year ahead awaits our Year 11 student leaders.

Year 10 Student Leaders Winners A special congratulation goes out to our overall student leader presentation winners (there can only be one!) from 10AB who will be treated to a day out at Hollywood Bowl and a meal at Pizza Hut. Well done Sophie, Amriptal, Toni, Hollie and Renee, you have done the school proud with your creativity, organisation and presentation skills.

Humanities Home Learning Options Success Across Humanities subjects student have been producing outstanding Home Learning Options (HLO) to further their learning outside of school. HLOs are an innovative way for students to gain extra knowledge and to present their ideas in a creative way. Recent examples in RE have been creating a representation of the Muslim holy structure, the Ka’aba complete with annotations; detailed illustrations of the problems of homelessness in Geography and a plethora of quizzes, board games and articles for History, which have been shared on the Humanities Twitter account @Conhumanities.

One of Conyers Humanities students, Ellen Robson, explains how HLOs has benefited her learning: ‘HLO's give us a feeling of independence and allow to extend our learning in a way that we feel can challenge us, interest us and benefit us. I think that the

HLO's are very beneficial as they allow us to explore different topics we probably wouldn't cover in class. We can extend our knowledge to any extent and enjoy it at the same time! For my first HLO, I chose to do a collage on segregation in the Civil Rights Movement. I love the independence the HLO's give you as we get the opportunity to do homework with our own twist or style - surely that will make us perform better if we are given the freedom to pick our homework?’.

Year 9 Tudors History Lecture Recently 10 Year 9 Conyers History students attended a lecture hosted by Dr Emmett from the University of York on the Tudors. It was a rare opportunity for the students to learn in-depth about a topic they’ve studied previously as well as experience a university level education. Lewis Wormald relates how he benefited from the opportunity: ‘We learnt a lot about Queen Elizabeth and her heir James as well as beliefs and propaganda during that period, in particular the "Resurrection of the Phoenix" - this was used to promote King James to the English. This was very beneficial as we could extend our learning and gain a new interest in a different topic.’ Given the success of this venture we are looking at more opportunities to benefit our students from a university level education.

History Somme Poem Competition As part of ‘Reading for Pleasure’, we are taking part in a national competition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. This was a famous battle during WW1, during which over 1 million soldiers were killed, from a huge number of countries that were involved. By taking part in this competition, students will be helping keep the memory of servicemen, women and animals that died, not only in historical wars, but also those who continue to give their lives today.

They will have the chance to create a piece of poetry that is completely their own, in your own style and words, to enter under the theme of ‘The Surviving Tree’. This is a tree which has now been placed on the site of the Battle of the Somme and remembers the events which took place there. It can be any type of poem, of any length & accompanied by images or illustrations. Students can be as creative as they want to be – the sky is the limit! This is a great opportunity to showcase their creative and literary talents on a national stage, whilst also honouring a great number of brave individuals who have been involved in conflicts all over the world.

The deadline for entries in Friday 3 June 2016 – students should email or hand their entries to Mr Pickering, Miss Hugill or any other member of the Humanities team.

Thank You The Geography Department would like to express their thanks for the generous donation received from Friends of Conyers. The money has been used to buy fieldwork equipment so that we can offer students a host of additional fieldwork opportunities. Such equipment is expensive and this money has allowed us to continue to provide an outstanding experience. On behalf of the students, thank you for your continued support in helping us provide our students with even more opportunities.

Parents Collecting or Dropping off Children

This should be done within the bus bay only. However, the bus bay is closed to cars between 3.15 and 4.00 p.m. each evening to allow the buses to park ready for the journey home. Also, parents should not park blocking the school entrance roadway on the yellow lines when collecting their children on an afternoon. At no time before, during or after school should a vehicle enter the main drive to drop off or collect a student, unless in the case of a medical emergency. Only disabled students are dropped off and picked up from the disabled parking bays on the school site and children with temporary disabilities, ie broken legs, etc, likewise.

PE Department Athletics

Stockton School Games Well done to all athletes that took part in this year’s games. The Year 7 dodgeball team saw a very close competition only losing two games against 10 teams but ended up finishing joint second with two other schools. The Year 7 frisbee team finished third, after playing ultimate Frisbee for the first time. Both the boys and girls cyclists performed well but did not manage to be on the medal podium. Year 9 girls futsal team put in some strong performances finishing fourth overall. Year 9 boys futsal team had a great tournament finishing second with a silver medal following some great performances from individuals including the 'sweeper keeper' Ben Cummings. Well done to Year 10 volleyball teams who both finished strongly in third and first place. Conyers A will now progress onto the next round and represent Stockton at the Tees Valley School Games.

English Schools Track and Field Cup This event was held at Middlesbrough Sports Village with Conyers entering over 50 students in Years 7 to 10. A good day out for all Conyers athletes competing against schools from all over Cleveland. Well done to the Under 15 girls relay winning the 4x100m in a time of 57.3secs. Well done to all other winners including Jasmine Clarke (hurdles, 300m), Matty Drake (100m), Emily McGee (200m), Miles Murray (300m), Dan Payne (1500m), Cameron Spence (800m). Well done to all those who participated.

Schools Athletics Conyers Athletics team took part in the Stockton Athletics finals at Middlesbrough Sports Village. Students from Year 7 to 10 took part. The Year 8 and 9 boys team finished 2nd and we had some exceptional individual performances with Kate Murphy, Sophie Wall, Cameron Spence, Jasmin Clarke, Dan Payne, Nathan Wood-Gordon, Finn Cousin-Dawson, Myles Murray and Luke Petit all qualifying to represent Stockton at the County Championships.

Cricket The cricket season, organised for Stockton schools by Maltby Cricket Club, is now underway.

Under 14 boys won away at Bedale in The Yorkshire County Cup and play away to High Tunstall in the next round. The Under 13 boys beat Acklam Grange by 80 runs in the first round of the Yorkshire Post Cup. Under 15 boys have only played one match so far due to bad weather at the start of term, unfortunately they lost to Huntcliff in an extraordinary game which saw Joe Clark hit his first ever 6 and Owen Huggins performing well with bat and ball. The game ended with Huntcliff needing 1 run from the last ball for a draw, which they achieved so the game was decided on a "super over", a first ever for the Conyers team.

We wish the boys and girls teams good luck in their matches.

Headingley Visit

Fifteen Conyers cricketers had the opportunity to see the first day of the England versus Sri Lanka test match at Headingley. They had a thoroughly good day, despite seeing Alistair Cook and Joe Root go out early, a strong batting partnership from Bairstow and Hales allowed England to reach a total which led to them winning the 1st Test. We arrived in time for the students to take in the atmosphere, purchase souvenirs and get an ice cream before the start of play, most students managed to get signatures from a number of ex-players including Andrew Strauss. Unfortunately despite good weather all day rain stopped play at tea time but this did not damped the spirits.

Tennis The tennis season is now underway. Unfortunately Under 13A and Under 15A girls were defeated against Yarm despite giving a good performance against a strong Yarm team. Both teams have fixtures against Stokesley and Egglescliffe in the league.

It was a tough start to the season for the boys teams as they played away to Egglescliffe. The Under 13A and B and Under 15B teams lost their games. The Under 15A team played an outstanding game, winning for the first time for a number of seasons against Egglescliffe. Well done to all.

High attendance at Rounders and Cricket at lunchtime practice sessions has allowed the department to pick a wide variety of teams. There will be tournaments in both of these activities after half term.

Football Year 7 boys have capped off a fantastic season with yet another trophy winning the District Cup in dramatic fashion. With the final ending in a draw after full time it was Conyers who held their nerve to take a well-deserved victory. They were presented with the County Cup trophy at Middlesbrough Riverside Stadium on Thursday 26 May.

Year 11 boys went out on a high winning the District Cup; adding to their league title, we are proud to say they bounced back strongly having lost both narrowly in Year 10, a fitting end to a great 5 years of school football. We hope they continue to play into adulthood.

Some great football has been played by all teams this season and we have been unlucky not to win more trophies. Well done to you all. We will go again next season!

Sports Leaders

Conyers Sports Leaders have been fantastic this term running a number of sporting events for the local primary schools. Year 9 leaders ran a brilliant multi-sport event for over 100 Year 2 pupils and received praise from all staff involved. Students have also been involved in running athletics, tennis and cricket events with some being invited to help run and officiate competitions at Tees Valley level.

Loan Kit As we are moving towards the end of the academic year and with the Year 11 students moving on, we are asking for donations of outgrown PE kit. The department has a supply of clothing and trainers/football boots to loan out, to ensure students are included in lessons, in the event of kit being forgotten. All items are washed prior to being reissued. The PE department would be grateful for any contributions. Thank you.

Keep up to date with all of the teams’ fixtures and results via Twitter @ConyersPE.

Go Music continues to grow and develop both in Conyers School and the community. Not only do we have over 200 students having peripatetic lessons, but our staff are now teaching in several local Primary schools helping deliver their Music curriculum.

Please join us for the Summer Concert where Go Music students from all our schools will be showcasing their talents.
