Welcome Back Term 2 is well and truly underway now. Traditionally, it is a busy term for parents and students, with important decisions to be made. During the term Years 9, 10 and 11 students will receive important information about subject selections for 2016. It is important for students to attend to these selections as early as possible and seek advice from the administration and their teachers whenever necessary. The choices students make will determine which subjects run at the school next year. THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ON TIME. Exams This term Years 10, 11 and 12 students will all be doing exams. During weeks 6 and 7 the Senior School students do exams and/or a work placement. Students on Work Place Learning must still sit any scheduled exams. It is important that these students study consistently throughout the term to avoid stress. Students should continue to ask their teachers for exam and study tips. Parents can help by reinforcing the importance of study at home. Also, on the 4 and 5 June the Year 10 students will have exams in

Maths, English, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences. We hope these will help guide subject selections for 2016 and give students a chance to practice study and examination skills. Reports The Semester 1 reports are important for all students to assess where they are at. Years 10 and 11 students should carefully analyse their current success and progress when making selections for 2016. Year 12 students need to reassess the time spent on and the effectiveness of their study if their results are not what they expected. Remember the school staff are always ready to assist students. All Year 12 Students Year 12 students have been given a package to complete their student declaration and Permission online for SCSA. Please read the following carefully:- Parent Information—Student Declaration and Permission online: All Year 12 students wanting to complete their WACE

this year need to complete the online student declaration and permission. Details of this process are listed below.

NOTE:

The deadline for students to complete this process online is

29 June 2015 Student Declaration Year 12 students, and those students enrolled in the WACE examinations, need to declare that they are aware of the requirements to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and for sitting the WACE examinations. These requirements are listed in the Year 12 Information Handbook which is available on the Authority website at: http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/ internet/Publications/ year12_information_handbook In closing, I wish all our students a successful term and look forward to them achieving their best.

Principals Message continued 2016 courses soon afterwards. Success in these examinations will contribute to determining whether students should pursue an ATAR or VET course. Demonstrated success is a key factor to future success. I urge all students to give their best in all their examinations.

Year 7 Study Skills Program After the success of the Upper School study skills day early in Term 1 all Year 7 students will participate in a two hour study skills programme conducted by Elevate Education. The programme will run on Monday 25 May during periods 1 & 2. The programme consists of 2 one hour workshops titled Study Skills Kick Start and Junior Time Management. This will assist

students in the transition to high school and the study rigours required for academic success. A parent session will be held after the students have completed the programme. Information regarding this session will be given to parents once a date is finalised.

Year 8 Vaccinations The second round of vaccinations will be held on Thursday 21 May. The final round of vaccinations will be conducted on Thursday 22 October. Please note these dates in your diary as there are no catch up sessions. In this second round students will be receiving vaccinations for either Gardasil (HPV – Human Papillomavirus) or Adecel (Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis) or both. Students absent on the day will need to get vaccinated through their local doctor. Year 7 Elevate Education Program On Monday 25 May all Year 7 students will participate in workshops during periods 1 & 2, conducted by Elevate Education. The workshops are titled Study Skills Kick Start and Junior Management Time and are presented by university students. A similar programme was conducted for the Upper

School students during week 1 of the school year, which proved highly beneficial. I believe this programme will further assist the students in their transition to high school. A parent evening will also be scheduled. This date is yet to be confirmed. Year 7 & 9 Naplan The 2015 NAPLAN testing cycle has just been completed. All the Year 7 & 9 students sat literacy and numeracy tests. Results of student performance will be available late in term 3. Year 9 NAPLAN student performance is now linked to secondary WACE graduation. Students achieving Band 8 in Year 9 NAPLAN will be deemed to have met the minimum literacy and numeracy requirements for secondary WACE graduation. Students who have not achieved Band 8 are required to sit the OLNA tests in Year 10 and subsequent years until they meet the minimum standards.

SENIOR SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION Second term is the time when we start preparing our Year 10 students for senior school course selection. Mrs Fuhrmann has been visiting each Year 10 Humanities class one period a week, and we have engaged students in career exploration using My Career Match resources, which include an individualised report and associated workbook. If you have a son or daughter in Year 10 and have not seen their My Career Match report, please ask to do so. These reports outline a list of preferred career directions based on student interests and personality types. Every Year 10 student has been emailed a copy of their individual report. Over the remainder of Term 2, students will be introduced to our senior school course selection materials, and will look into the range of courses available for selection in 2016, as well as developing an understanding of the requirements to achieve a WACE in 2017. While we expect most of our current Year 11 students to remain in the majority of their courses during Year 12, there is an opportunity to review performance in existing courses, and make changes where required. Mr Strickland has been carefully monitoring the performance of Year 11 students, and advising both the student and their parents when concerns exist with current grades and assessment completion.

Our Course selection materials will be available from Wednesday 24 June, when our parent information night is scheduled from 6:30 pm in the school’s Performing Arts Centre. Please mark this date in your calendar.

WORKPLACE LEARNING It is a clearly stated requirement for our VET students to take part in Workplace Learning during our scheduled senior school timetable breaks – in Semester 1.

This occurs between 25 May to 5 June. Our partner, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) increasingly expect that competencies developed during class work are applied in the workplace, and our block placements provide students with exposure to their chosen industry areas. ATAR pathway students will have exams, and attend school only during scheduled exams – as a result, normal Year 11 and 12 classes are suspended during this period. We will have close to 200 students attending a variety of workplaces over these two weeks, and all students will be required to complete their logbook in order to gain credit for their placement. If you have any queries or concerns regarding Workplace Learning, please contact Mrs Fuhrmann, [email protected] or telephone 9408 8014. All students are fully covered by Department of Education insurance while on an approved placement.

Winter Uniform With the impending inclement weather, it is important that students uphold high standards of uniform throughout the winter months. As we are currently in a period of transition into the new uniform, on the colder days the new Belridge Secondary College school jacket or a plain navy blue jumper with no markings or logos are acceptable to wear to school. Any jumpers or jackets must be worn over the school shirt. Undershirts can also be worn where they have no visible writing and are white or navy blue. Please be reminded that leggings of any kind, when worn by themselves, are NOT part of the school uniform. Only plain navy blue or black stockings will be permissible when worn under a navy skirt.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Each month staff within the school are encouraged to nominate a Student of the Month. Students can be recognised and nominated for a variety of reasons, such as high levels or improvement in achievement and participation, work ethic, courtesy, helpfulness and generally having a positive impact within the school environment. All winners as well as nominees will receive a certificate in recognition of their exceptional efforts. Student of the Month winners for April are as follows:

Year 7 - Lauren Reid for working superbly, always being attentive and striving to achieve her personal best

Year 8 – Zane Gazey

for consistently working well in class and achieving outstanding results

Year 9 – Morgan Cosgrove for very good work ethic as well as dedication to the Netball Academy

Year 10 - Koana Kari

for excellent results in Maths and working well during class

Year 11 – Madeline Riecken for contributing well in class activities, consistent high achievement and excellent work in Drama

Year 12 – Sophie Duke

for completing work in a timely manner, consistent work ethic and excellent quality of work

Congratulations to all winners and nominees. As always, we encourage all students to strive for excellence in every aspect of their school day.

College Board Matters

May 2015 The meeting of the new Board was held in the conference room on 11 May. Apologies were received from Nick Jakowyna and Michael Mischin. A warm Belridge welcome to our new Board members; parent representatives Scott Amy and Fiona McDonald and staff representative Lisa Manning. Continuing members are Janine Espey (parent rep), Heather Broadway and Kirsten Lambert (staff reps) and Jan Norberger, Tolla Anderson and Michael Mischin (community reps). A warm welcome also to Mario Pisano (Acting Principal). Mr Pisano presented the financial report, which indicated that the College is in a sound financial position for this time of the year. So far we have collected 55% of the school fees. If you have any outstanding fees I urge you to contact the Business Manager, Greg Carey. An earnest discussion was held regarding the amount we currently have in reserve, which is set aside for replacement of high cost items in the future. We fear that the government will try to recoup those reserves. The Board will further

investigate this important issue. Mr Pisano presented the results of the survey, conducted by The Children’s Crossing and Road Safety Committee, on the Ocean Reef Road crossing, which indicated about 50 students use the crossing in both the morning and afternoon. The Board is concerned that we will lose the crossing wardens creating a dangerous situation on a major dual carriage road that has a 70kmph speed limit. We await, with concern, their decision. The Board wishes all the Year 7’s and 9’s all the best in the NAPLAN tests currently being conducted. Ms Lambert reported that The Joondalup Festival, organised by her for the Year 11 and 12 Drama students to practise their presentations is well advanced. Mr Norberger will help with advertising the event that hopes to attract drama students from nearby schools. As this is my final Board Matters I wish to thank Mr Jakowyna and his staff for their support throughout the past 3 years. To my fellow Board members, I also thank you for your total commitment to the College. When one looks back on the past few years we collectively have achieved an enormous

School Ball 2015 ‘A World of Imagination’

Page 8

The Year 12 Ball, “A World of Imagination” was held on 1 April 2015 at the AQWA function centre in Hillary’s. The night, which started with mocktails through the aquarium tunnels following a yellow brick road, was a huge success. The students all looked fantastic in their formal attire and were beautifully behaved. In a room overlooking the marina and ocean, throughout the night they enjoyed great food, fantastic music, fun with photographs (professional and photo booth) and, best of all, the most amazing company. Willy Wonka door prizes, and a Hogwarts jellybean guess added to the other awards of the night and added to the feeling of a magical world. With all students looking fantastic, it was hard to decide the award winners of the night (they were all winners!). The night wouldn’t have been such a success without the help of the fantastic ball committee and presence of staff on the night. But, most importantly, it was the high spirits, enthusiasm and positivity of the students that truly made it a night to remember. A huge thank you to everyone in making the night so amazing. Legally Blonde the Musical Performing Pups Visit The Year 11 Drama class was visited by two stars from the musical Legally Blonde who rehearsed with them on Wednesday 6 May. The four legged furry actors, Peanut (Chihuahua: stage name Bruiser) and Winston (Bulldog: stage name Rufus) are being trained for their upcoming performances at the Regal Theatre by Behaviourist and Animal Trainer Charlotte Smithson from Pawsitively Wagging, Purrfectly Behaved. The students performed monologues and improvisations with Peanut and Winston at the rear of the stage. Every time a student was applauded the pups were rewarded for paying attention to their trainer, rather than being distracted by the audience. Cuddles were only allowed at the end of their successful training session! Belridge Secondary College’s annual Belsurf Carnival was held at Sorrento on Friday 27 March. The weather for the day was absolutely perfect, with comfortable temperatures, clear skies and very little breeze. The students supported the day with approximately 70% of students attending and wearing house colours from top to tail, making it a day to remember. The Year 7 and 8 groups had their first experience of a whole school event, in which they all performed extremely well. The day commenced with the traditional Iron Man and Woman event, consisting of swimming, running and body board legs. This event is open to all students and individual medals are given to the winners and runner-ups. Belsurf is as much about participation as it is about performance and throughout the rest of the day we saw fine examples of both. Students participated in a variety of competitive and novelty beach and water events in order to gain valuable points for their house. An individual medal for the winners of the beach flags was presented to each student on the day. Year 10 Lightning Carnival

YEAR 10 BOYS SOCCER Firstly, a big thank you goes out to Jake Price, Callum Williams and Connor Dodsworth for helping out with the team management for the day. Belridge had 33 representatives at this years’ lightning carnival. These boys were divided into an “A” and “B” team. As there were no divisions, everyone had the chance to play against all the other schools with some mixed results. The game of the day could easily have been classed as the Match of the Century as our two teams faced off against each other. The “B” side quickly showed that they should not be classed as second string as they took an early lead in the game. This seemed to be the wake up call that the A’s needed and they eventually came back with numerous chances and finally netting 4 of them. Special mention should go out to Jayden Skinner, Lachlan Greaves and Oliver Smith in the B’s who seemed to be controlling the game in the midfield, and the defence respectfully for the B-side. The A-side mentions go to Benn Abel, Josh Waldock and the “Wall” AKA Scott Flannery who controlled the defence beautifully. A further special mention should go to Kyle Bell who single-handedly saved about 4 goals for the opposition by kicking the ball wide in one-on-one situations with only the keeper to beat. He managed to miss a header from under the goal posts too. “It was the wind!”, Kyle was reported as saying after his teams’ 4-1 win. Unfortunately, both “A” and “B” teams had slightly more losses than wins, which resulted in Belridge not making the finals, although a good day was had by all. NETBALL On Thursday 7 May, Belridge Secondary College sent three Netball teams up to Kingsway Sporting Complex to compete in the annual lightning carnival. I am so proud of the girls who came on the day and participated to the best of their ability. They had seven games to play over the course of the day and only 21 students in total. This meant every student played every game for the whole day with no rest! Along with Belridge, other schools in our zone were Wanneroo, Kinross, Butler and Ocean Reef. We finished with fantastic results for Belridge. In Pool A we finished first and second and in Pool B the girls finished second. After the finals Belridge finished first, third and fourth, which is an amazing achievement for the school and the girls themselves. I would like to thank all students for their sportsmanship and effort throughout the whole day. It’s a credit to the school to see the way Belridge students represent themselves in the wider community. Another big thanks to Miss Gray for helping out at Netball and the students who came and helped support and umpire for the day. These students were Joanna Alexandre, Tianna Pollock and Sophie Hummerston. Looking forward to many more successful lightning carnivals. TARRYN HUNT Netball Coordinator

YEAR 10 BOYS AFL On Thursday 7 May a group of 16 Year 10 boys travelled to Kingsway Sporting Complex to participate in an AFL Lighting Carnival. The competition was made up of 5 schools that included Kinross College, Wanneroo SHS, Ocean Reef SHS and Butler College. The first game was against Wanneroo SHS and this game was fast-paced throughout. Wanneroo SHS, a specialist AFL school, were a well drilled side and moved the ball fluently, which made it difficult for Belridge to get into the game, but to our credit we battled hard for the entirety of the game with our fighting spirit epitomised by our ferocious tackling. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and Wanneroo finished victors by 31 points. The second game saw Belridge up against Butler College. This game proved to be another hard one and Butler flew out of the blocks kicking 5 goals to 1 in the first half. Butler’s relentless pressure continued in the second half piling on another 5 goals to win by 46 points. The third game was against Ocean Reef SHS and the Belridge boys responded courageously after the previous two defeats. Belridge dominated from the outset and punished Ocean Reef through the midfield, with Tristan Healy, Ryan Ferguson, Connor Heywood, Declan Kidd and Caleb Karmelich supplying the forwards with silver plated service. Belridge devastating Ocean Reef with an 83 point win. The final game was against Kinross College and followed a similar pattern to the Ocean Reef game. The Belridge forwards demoralised Kinross early with Callum Morrell and Riley Wilson doing the damage. Michael Emms provided terrific run off the half back flank to supply the forwards as well. Belridge kicked away in the second half to finish winners by 92 points. Belridge finished 3rd in the overall competition. A massive congratulations to all the boys that took part in the carnival. Their enthusiasm and sportsmanship was outstanding. Another big thank you to Aiden Corbett, Elliot Lawrence and Lachlan Sheriffs who helped umpire throughout the day. YEAR 10 GIRLS SOCCER Thursday 7 May was a fantastic day to play soccer. For the first time in their lightning carnival history, the Year 10 girls did not have to battle rain and wind, instead playing in beautiful sunny conditions. Both teams performed exceptionally well winning and drawing many games. Overall the teams placed 2nd and 4th. I was extremely proud of the teamwork, attitude, participation and behaviour on the day. I could not have asked for a better group of students to take to a lightning carnival. Well done girls. A special thank you to our two helpers Georgia Chapman and Emma Murray.

High School Cup It’s that time of year again when the Netball Academy takes part in our big competition for the year. We have 7 teams entered in the High School Cup this year ranging from Year 7 through to Year 10. We are approximately half way through the games at the present time and have won 14 out of our 17 games, which is a fantastic achievement. Teams that win the majority of their games in their zone will progress to the next stage of the competition and then on to finals. I will keep you updated as to any further success we have. We have also had several girls from Years 8 through to 11 who have come along and umpired for the Academy, who I would like to thank them very much. Another big thank you to Miss Gray who is also giving up her own time everyday after school for these first five weeks with me to coach or umpire the games. We are very proud of the girls and wish them all the best for the next few weeks. MISS HUNT Netball Coordinator

Young Guns set to take on Australian States

On the 12 June these cricketers will be playing for Western Australia in the State Championship in Darwin. Belridge have always had a strong representation in state cricket teams, but for the first time we see four Belridge cricketers in the final 13 to take on the other states in the tournament. This tournament is the first step for talented athletes to work their way up the ranks to play for the Warriors and hopefully Australia. WA has typically been very successful at the tournament with many players making the Australian under 16’s from this tournament. When I asked the guys if they were excited about the trip and what their goals are, they all had very comprehensive answers …

Oran Pattison said “Yep! Excited, want to do well”.

Connor Chadwick said

“Yep! Excited, want to do good”.

Connor Thorn said “Yep!”.

Luke Cheshire said

“I would like to thank my mum and dad for getting me here. I think we will do really well. I am really looking forward to rooming with the lads and having some great experiences. I would like to thank myself

especially, because I am probably the best thing since sliced bread and at the end of the day my hard work and good looks have got me this far! I expect to dominate and get a Cricket Australia contract after

Day 2. Ohhh! ... and finally thanks to Mr O, probably the best coach ever and he is a huge reason why I am so good”.

Obviously Luke had a lot more to add even though I didn’t ask him any other questions, but he does make some sense amongst the extended exaggerated answer! Well done lads and do Western Australia and Belridge Secondary College proud. In other cricket news, our First XI made the Kim Hughes Shield Grand Final and played off against John Forrest. Unfortunately we didn’t play our best cricket and were defeated. I am proud of the guys, but improvements need to be made for next year and hopefully we can go one better. With the season at a close, all of our year groups did well winning many games this summer and we look forward to Term 4 when games and camps will take place.

GET READY FOR A LEEUWIN ADVENTURE THIS YEAR!

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation has some exciting news which we would like to share with your school community. We have just released our full voyage program for 2015; another season packed with ocean adventures for 14-25 year olds, aboard the STS Leeuwin II. A unique experiential learning program which is endorsed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. We have two remaining voyages coming up before our annual winter maintenance period and then we recommence in September with a couple of voyages to Bunbury, several school holiday voyages, our second Uni Challenge, a few 6-day voyages to accommodate those students who have weekend sporting commitments and our annual Ultimate Challenge voyage for those with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability. Learning to sail a traditional tall ship is a unique and life-changing experience which will challenge participants to step outside their comfort zones and discover their true potential, equipping them with key life skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork and self-confidence. A Leeuwin voyage is not only the ultimate ocean adventure, it also counts as 5 WACE points for students in years 10 to 12 and can now also count as a component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Queen’s Scout Award. We have a range of scholarships available to cover part of the voyage fare for anyone in need of financial assistance. To find out more about our voyages and scholarship program or to download application form please visit www.sailleeuwin.com. John Prior Volunteer Mentor

John Prior was a Mentor to many of our students for seven years; sadly he passed

away on Thursday May 14th, 2015. John was a retired Medical Scientist who had worked at Path West for many years. With his intellect,

compassion, patience and sense of humour, he was a wonderful mentor to all his students.

John did not live close to Belridge Secondary College and was persuaded by the School

Volunteers Program to come to Belridge. I am sure at first he thought it would be a short stint. Seven years later when I visited him at home after his brain tumour was removed and he was in a wheel chair, he told me he wanted

to come back to mentor again in 2015. Sadly, his health deteriorated and he was not able

to return.

John was a brilliant mentor and was admired by students and staff with whom he made

contact. He will be very much missed by those he helped and nurtured. Our sincere condolences go to his wife Julie and

extended family.

F inancial support provided by parents has always played an enabling role in the

provision of resources that extend Belridge Secondary College’s capacity to add value to your child’s learning experience. For example, parent contributions allow us to provide class sets of text books instead of students having to provide their own. Many courses cost significant amounts of money to run for our students and require the full payment of fees/charges by all parents/carers. Estimates of the level of the total payments that will be received from parents form an important element in schools’ annual financial budget plans. Decisions about the level of financial support requested of parents have been approved by the School Board, which has an important role in the school’s financial planning arrangements to meet the needs of students. We do appreciate those parents who have paid school charges/contributions already, but request full payment for all Years 7 to 12 by the end of the financial year 30 June 2015. Year 11 parents have also been notified by letter that outstanding high cost ($100+) course fees must also be paid in full prior to Year 12, 2016 course selection. Students will not be considered for high costs courses until their 2015 high cost courses are fully paid. Time payment plans can be arranged. Please contact the Business Manager or office staff. The school offers EFTPOS facilities and credit card payments over the phone for your convenience. We also offer internet banking (Direct Deposit).

WHEN MAKING A DIRECT DEPOSIT, PLEASE DETAIL THE STUDENT NAME & YEAR AND

CHECK YOU DON’T MAKE AN EXTRA PAYMENT

We have been receiving direct deposits from parents who have already cleared their account, which is causing extra work for school office staff. Please check your reminders of unpaid billing items very carefully and only pay what is owed. If you are unsure please contact the school for an up-to-date balance. Receipting System Students going on excursions or camps etc., will be issued with an envelope showing details of the excursion, camp, etc., and the cost. These envelopes, containing cash or credit card details are to be returned to the school and deposited in a ‘drop box’ located in the front office. Class teachers are no longer responsible for the collection of monies. Office hours are between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.

EliteMusic Program2016

DO YOU LOVE MUSIC? DO YOU WANT TO EXCEL AT IT?

Music has been a part of the Belridge community since the school opened in 1991. The Elite Music Program commenced for the first time in 2015, and is continuing in 2016. The program is open to all students (from beginners to advanced) starting Year 7 in 2016. Students

who are selected may or may not have had music tuition previously. Students will continue in the program through to Year 10, when they will then have the option to continue studying Music as a subject in Years 11 and 12.

The program will run for 2-4 periods per week with a focus on musicianship (aural and theory), music history and analysis, solo and ensemble performance and composition. Over the course of the program, students will study Western art (classical) music, jazz, contemporary and world music.

If your child is accepted into the Elite Music Program, they are eligible to have lessons through the Instrumental Tuition Program. Instrumental lessons are given by the School of Instrumental Music, which provides free weekly lessons by the Department of Education of Western Australia. Vocal lessons are provided by a visiting tutor, at the expense of the parents.

Elite music students will be required to be formally learning an instrument through either the Instrumental Tuition Program (at school) or private tuition outside of school.

Students wanting instrumental or vocal lessons at Belridge must be enrolled in the Elite Music Program.

Chaplain’s Dinner 2015

W e were waiting, preparing, working for it … and it has come … and now it is gone, the 21st Chaplain’s Dinner at Belridge SC.

To ALL who worked hard in planning and preparation, and it involved a lot, from invites, tickets, menus, place mats, decor, programs, cooking, baking, setting-up and then serving and managing through it all and not forgetting also all that motivating of students. … YOU ALL did great work! Staff, Students and Friends! THANK YOU! I’m so grateful for all your support and I really enjoy being a part of our school community. Looking forward to an outstanding TOMORROW. It was also a pleasure to welcome back our former school Chaplains to celebrate this milestone. So, why is a car's WINDSHIELD so large & the rear view mirror so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. Okay, let us all look ahead and move on … … I certainly don't regret my experiences because without them, I couldn't imagine who or where I would be today. Life is an amazing gift to those who have overcome great obstacles, and attitude is everything! So NEVERTHELESS, don't be afraid to be amazing! “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love - then make that day count!”

On Wednesday 25 March, the Dance students from Years 10, 11 and 12 viewed “Behind the Veneer” performed by The Contemporary Dance Company of Western Australia. The students, Ms Currie and Mrs Wright had lunch at the beautiful University of Western Australia Campus before watching the amazing contemporary performance in The Dolphin Theatre. The performance was targeted at youth in our society and explored the idea of the “many

masks we wear to function in different situations, to stay ‘in control’ and keep relationships “afloat”. Our students were very impressed with the “highly physical and captivating” performance, which they then reviewed for assessment. We are very fortunate to have viewed this amazing performance and I was very impressed by the way the students represented the school.

Excursions

On Thursday 8 May, Belridge Secondary College computing students had an opportunity to attend the 2015 Big Day In Careers in IT conference. This is the third year Belridge students have attended the event, held at Perth Town Hall. First run in 2012, BIG DAY IN is an IT careers conference with a

difference - it's organised, run and hosted by students for students. The ACS Foundation facilitates leading speakers from ICT companies to speak about the future of technology and how students can get involved in shaping the future. During the day, student participated in presentations from some of the IT industries leading employers. This included presentations from IBM, Microsoft, Google and Bankwest. During breaks, students were able to browse displays from a number

of exhibitors and get some hands on experience with the latest in technology. Students were also able to chat with representatives from various ICT businesses and ask questions about potential career pathways. By the time the day came to a close, students had a far greater understanding of the many opportunities available to students with an interest in ICT.

Avoiding online spam, scams and phishing

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! The online world provides you and your child with incredible access to communications and information. However, there are also a number of things that you must be aware of to avoid being taken advantage of. Scams are ways of obtaining information or money through false means. Spam is an unsolicited commercial electronic message. Phishing is the use of email or SMS to encourage individuals to reveal financial details like credit card

numbers, account names and passwords or other personal information. Phishing messages can look like genuine messages from a real bank, telecommunications provider, online retailer or credit card company.

Discuss these actions with your child to avoid this illegal activity. Avoid giving out your email address or mobile phone number publicly. Check the terms and

conditions of anything you sign up for. You may be consenting to receive commercial messages. Do not accept friend requests or respond to text messages from people you don’t know. Remember that banking institutions will never contact customers by email seeking specific account

details. Call your bank directly if you have any concerns about a contact claiming to be your bank. Ensure that you only disclose financial information on websites that you trust and that have secure

payment facilities. Look for a URL that begins with ‘https://’ and padlock symbols once you get to the payment page to check it is likely to be secure.

If you or someone you know has been affected by spam, scams or phishing, visit the Cybersmart Online Helpline (www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx) or call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.

BELRIDGE EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRE From the ESC Principal’s desk

A ll of our students have started Term 2 with lots of energy and enthusiasm.

All of the educational programs are providing a range of varied and exciting learning opportunities across both the Lower and Upper Secondary cohorts. These programs encompass all Curriculum areas as well as a range of other programs including swimming, independent living skills, DFES, VET courses, community access, and Workplace Learning. Congratulations to all students on the manner in which they have returned and of course this also extends to all of the staff who work tirelessly to provide the very best opportunities for our students. SCHOOL UNIFORMS The cooler weather is rapidly approaching and parents are reminded of the requirement to adhere to the uniform policy here at Belridge. The school uniform plays an important role in creating a sense of identity amongst the school community which also supports the inclusive practices which occurs here at Belridge between the two schools. Navy blue long sleeve undershirts are now also available for purchase and these must match the colour of your designated year group school polo shirt. There has been a delay in the provision of school jumpers and students are able to wear a plain navy blue jumper that does NOT have any logos. School tracksuit jackets are also available for purchase from Uniform Concepts located in Winton Road, Joondalup. SCHOOL BOARD Our next School Board meeting is on Tuesday 9 June and parents will receive nomination forms for two 1 year positions that will exist on our Board. The School Board participates in establishing and reviewing from time to time, the school’s objectives, priorities and general policy directions; planning financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities and directions; evaluating the school’s performance in achieving those objectives, priorities and directions; and formulating codes of conduct for students at the school. I look forward to continuing to work alongside the members of our Board to provide exceptional opportunities for our students. IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER: Just a reminder that Friday 29 May is a designated School Development Day and students will not be attending school on this day. The following Monday 2 June is WA Day so we hope that you are able to make the most of the long weekend. We are also hosting a Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 26 June at 6.00 pm in the main staff room located near our office area. This evening will provide families with the opportunity to listen to service providers regarding opportunities for your child beyond school. Student reports will be mailed out to all families during the last week of term and I look forward to all of our students continuing to make individual progress and achievements in all aspects of their schooling.

Kind regards,

JENINE WALL Principal
