Dear Parents, This week at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Pope Francis spoke on Immigration and slave labour. He urged all people to action saying Human trafficking is a scourge and a crime against the whole of humanity". Also we now hear that the 200 hundred Nigerian school girls have been found; with Nigerian leaders refusing to say where they are or give a plan of how to restore the girls to their former lives. Lately, my day begins badly as the alarm wakes me in the darkness of early morning with the details of the Rolf Harris trial. That human life is nothing more than an absurd mess is hardly an original thought. The older I get the deeper becomes my experience that the Gospel is a bulwark against descending into meaninglessness. The Australian Government has produced a Safe Schools Framework which is intended to ensure the psychological and physical safety of students in Australian schools. Naturally Brigidine will comply with all requirements inherent in this framework but no set of rules and procedures will take the place of the relationships that are formed by people who understand how vulnerable we all are. My experience of an adult life lived with the assistance of the Gospel is that its stories and commandments call us to honesty about ourselves and who we are in the realm of the universe. Pope Francis is alerting us all to the fact that in our world there are now a very great number of people who are on the move, searching for a place to live away from the brutality of their situation or to find dignifying employment. The desperation of their plight makes them vulnerable to sinful people who promise escape without revealing the great price to be paid later for it. The internet trumpets the lifestyle possibilities in places like Australia........if only they could make it there somehow. Living as we do, it is easy to become infected with the idea that all is useless and meaningless. As Catholics we believe that the Gospel really is effective in making the world a more merciful and just place.

This is a very newsy newsletter, full of the interesting and nurturing things that we do at Brigidine for girls and the things they do for themselves. How wonderful it would be if the same was true for the Nigerian girls.

The Year Ten Formal This event which is held in early December each year is organised by parents. Girls who have been sincere and cooperative in their studies and as a member of the Brigidine community receive an invitation to the Formal. Parents who would like to be a part of the Year Ten Formal can email me their name at [email protected]. A meeting will be called early next term.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL As we approach the midway point of Term 2, I remind both parents and girls that only College uniform jumpers, cardigans and coats are to be worn. Girls are under no circumstances to have pieces of clothing on, which are not part of the uniform.

All Year groups have now completed their half yearly exams. As Term 2 is so short, there will be an opportunity for parents and girls to reflect on their achievement over Semester 1 in the upcoming Parent/Teacher Interviews. Information regarding this will event will come shortly.

Record of School Achievement (RoSA) – Years 10 and 11 The RoSA is a cumulative credential in that it allows students to accumulate their academic results until they leave school. The RoSA records completed Stage 5 and Preliminary Stage 6 courses and grades, and participation in any uncompleted Preliminary Stage 6 courses. It is of specific use to students leaving school prior to the HSC. The Literacy and Numeracy tests that are an optional part of the RoSA will be held sometime in November. Any parent who would like their daughter to sit these tests should contact the school in October of this year. There will be another chance to sit them around April of next year.

Athletics Carnival The Athletics Carnival was another great success on such a beautiful autumn day. Many thanks go to our Sports Department for their excellent organisation of the day. There is a full report of the day elsewhere in this newsletter.

designated areas provided by council. The worst times to collect and drop off your daughters are

between 8.25 am—8.35 am and 3.15 pm—3.40 pm. Perhaps you might consider arriving

CURRICULUM NEWS This semester we have implemented a new computerised mark book and reporting system for Years 11 and 12. This has meant that Key Learning Area Coordinators have had to learn a new system for compiling, collating marks and running calculations and that teachers have had to come to grips with a new reporting system. There have been some teething problems, as there often are with new computerised systems. We have endeavoured to ensure that all the information on our reports is accurate. In some instances it was found not to be so. In those instances students have been reissued reports. If you have any questions about reports please speak either with the coordinator responsible for a particular subject or myself.

On Tuesday 3 June we will be holding an Information Evening for Year 10 students and their parents at 7 pm in the Cullen Centre. A letter has been sent home with your daughter outlining the program for the evening. On the evening I will be speaking about the procedures for choosing subjects to study in Years 11 & 12 as well as explaining how these choices impact on our timetable. There is some important information given out on the night and I ask that you and your daughter attend, if at all possible.

Mary Help of Christians Mass Last Friday twenty Year 11 SOR2 students attended the Mass to celebrate the Feast of Mary Help of Christians at St Mary’s Cathedral. It was a simple, but beautiful celebration and it provided our students with a wonderful opportunity to gather and celebrate this significant Marion feast with the Secondary School community in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Two of our students, Lucy Kelly and Adella Beaini assisted with the Offertory, which made the event even more special for the students. Mrs Day Religious Education Coordinator

What’s happening this term…….. This term the sports captains are continuing their efforts to encourage and maximise the school spirit within each house. We have decided that the house vs house sport competitions were a great way to get the girls involved with school and house spirit. The sport we have decided on for this term is European Handball. The way we have planned for this competition is have a junior tournament, which involves the year 7, 8 and 9 girls, from each house in week 6, and a senior tournament that involves the year 10, 11 and 12 girls, from each house in week 7. In doing this, we hope to encourage maximum participation and allow the girls to bond with girls of similar age in each house. So make sure that you come and support your house…and may the best team win!!! Georgia Thomson (Aquinas Vice Captain)

Finally of leaders took to the community….. LEADERS DAY AT EMANUEL- On the 21st of May, Sophia, Sophie and I attended Emanuel for a

leadership gathering. The experience was extensively insightful and entertaining as it was student

run and organized. The night began with a meet and greet, allowing all the students to become

closely acquainted with one another. After the initial greeting all schools were split and put into

groups where we were given a list of conversations topics, later we competed in a trivia. As a

whole, the night was full of fun as we were given a rare opportunity to bond with

other leaders and share ideas that could contribute to our school.

TO EXPERIENCE TRANQUILITY In today's society, it’s accepted that most of us don’t have time to relax and withdrawal from our busy daily routine (maybe to have the classic daily coffee, but that’s it). Within our busy lifestyles it is sometimes hard to find contentment; and that’s one of the few things that the Chinese considered to be important within their tradition. Fortunately, the elective Visual Art students of Year 9 had the privilege to travel to the Chinese Gardens of Friendship in Sydney’s Darling Harbour to experience one of the most amazing atmospheres in Sydney. We were all lucky to have been able to appreciate and experience the gardens; both the flora and fauna that existed within it; and to learn so much about the history behind the formation and heritage of the landmark. Everything had its own special place, and within a couple of minutes, a majority of us had zoned out and begun to relax completely. Even though we had work to do, it was still fun to venture out around the gardens, and it was probably the most pleasurable assignment that I have had the opportunity to complete. We were all bewildered by the fact that such tranquility could co-exist right in the middle of a busy city, and needless to say, none of us wanted to leave. On behalf of all the Year 9 Elective Visual Art students, we would like to say a big thank you to Ms Brennan, Mrs Smyth and Mr Scivetti for the wonderful experience. UNIFORM NEWS Dear Parents,

As you know, we always try to keep you in mind when it comes to pricing our uniform items. Over

the past few weeks we have received notifications from our suppliers of price increases. While trying

to keep our pricing reasonable it is unfortunate that we have to pass some of these increases on to

you. A new price list for the uniform shop will be issued with the next news letter and these increases

will take effect from the commencement of term 3, 2014.

On a lighter note, we have some Long Sleeve Polo's on sale at the uniform shop for $10.00. These were $45.00. Sizes and stock is limited so come on in and grab a bargain Mrs Chidiac Uniform Shop

COCKTATOO ISLAND EXCURSION In the early hours of the day, on the 20th of May, Year 11 Visual Art and Photography classes made their way to Cockatoo Island. Meeting up at 6:30am at Circular Quay, you can bet there were yawns of tiredness, but also thoughts of curiosity as we boarded the ferry. There was a good intention behind waking up early, for the sake of sunrise, which was well worth the 43 alarm clocks.

Upon arrival, the island itself was serene and quiet, and not to mention, mysterious. The students were able to explore to their heart’s content. What seemed to be rusting cranes and abandoned buildings, the students were being placed in a contrasting environment compared to where they had started. Often living in a busy city means always being flooded with mainstream ideas and students find themselves constantly struggling to find inspiration.

Photography students were sent out to start working on their assessment task, a new program consisting of different types of activities that have been created to cater to all individuals, allowing them to have the choice to select activities which focus on their strongest skills. Visual art students were instructed to roam the area and to draw in their visual art diaries, and to their advantage, the 19th Biennale of Sydney was also being exhibited at Cockatoo Island, so they were able to browse and experience artworks created by various artists.

Overall, the excursion was enjoyed by the students who attended. The weather was great for taking photos and for quiet sketching. It is an excursion to be remembered. Cockatoo Island broadened minds, and gave students a chance to grasp as much inspiration as possible, which they brought back with them, either in SD cards, sketches or perhaps in an idea floating around ready for future use.

On the 20th of May, year 11 Photography along with year 11 Visual Arts went on a trip to Cockatoo Island. Students met at darling harbour at 6.30am for an early start to capture the beautiful lighting of the Sydney Harbour and Cockatoo Island. We caught the ferry over to the island while taking photos of the spectacular sunrise, and the lighting on the water. When we got to Cockatoo, people immediately started taking photos so they could capture the beautiful lighting on the unique island scenery.

In term one Photography students were taught a variety of skills that would allow students to capture the beauty and serene qualities of the island. These skills were clearly translated into their amazing photographs. The island was an opportunity for the girls to capture the industrial scenery that cannot be found anywhere else. Old, broken machinery, views of the Sydney Harbour and the Biennale were a set that was used to portray the island’s mysterious and eerie feeling.

The results of this excursion were phenomenal; each aspect of the island was captured through different cameras and different people, illustrating a story which each photographer and artist have used in their assignments. This was a very successful day.

PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The athletics carnival was a superb event for the Photography girls to put practice their skill. They had the opportunity to photographic moments that could only be lived once, with their camera knowledge. Girls finally had the occasion to change the ISO and other settings on their camera, as they were no longer photographing still life but moments that flew past in the blink of an eye. Some scenes were better than others but none the less, it proved and efficient experience for all. I personally found that through the athletics carnival I found a greater understanding of the camera and the importance of each moment.

The school benefits greatly from having such skilled photography students who only have the teachers to thank, as they have shared such an abundance of knowledge with us. Through photographing the Athletics Carnival the girls of Brigidine have a great life experience as they can now apply their familiarity with the camera to real life if they choose to go into the workforce as a photographer.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED The Learning Support Team requires volunteers to read and/or write for Year 12 students who have been granted disability provisions for their Trial and HSC exams.

Disability provisions are practical arrangements that make it possible for students with permanent or temporary disabilities to reduce disadvantage in an exam situation.

The provisions granted are solely determined by how the student’s exam performance is affected. Provisions may include Braille papers, large-print papers, use of a reader and/or writer, extra time or rest breaks.

Generally, the Learning Support team act as readers and/or writers for our students. However for the HSC, these staff members are ineligible to perform this task as outlined by the Board of Studies (see below).

Who can and cannot act as a reader and/or writer?

Can A Year 11 student. It is recommended that a competent Year 11 student act as a

reader/writer for a Higher School Certificate student. These students should be familiar with the subjects being examined

A former student of the school A suitable adult A retired teacher

Cannot A relative of the student A currently employed teacher or private tutor A non-teaching employee at the student’s school (eg. a teacher’s aide, school secretary, lab

technician) Anyone who recently taught the student Anyone who has a close relative sitting the same examination A Board-appointed examination supervisor or presiding officer

What qualities should a reader/writer have?

Ability to communicate clearly in English

Understanding of the subject(s) being examined

Clear, legible handwriting (if writing for the student)

Willingness to spend time practising with the student

Patience and sensitivity to the student’s special needs

Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and an ability to do so

If you have some spare time and think you may be able to assist some of our students,

we would love to hear from you.

Who are you related to? Velma Von Tussle is my demanding

Mother

Who is your friend, who is your enemy? Link and the Corny Collins kids are my

friends and my enemy is Tracy Turnblad!

What is the best thing about playing your character? I like acting someone

who is so different from my own personality. I enjoy all the

dancing and singing and especially the acting as it

is something I hadn’t done before.

What has been the biggest challenge playing your character so far? Pulling off

a blonde wig and nailing the ‘American Baltimore’ accent.

Poppy Aldus plays Penny Pingleton–

Sum up your character in 4 sentences: Penny is a bit nerdy;

she lives her life through her friend Tracy because she is

controlled by her mother. Her favourite food is lollypops.

Who are you related to? Prudy Pingleton

Who is your friend, who is your enemy? Tracy is my best

friend and Seaweed is a bit of a hunk. Amber is kind of my enemy because she is

mean to Tracy but I like everyone really.

What is the best thing about playing your character? I love how quirky and

nerdy she is and that when she finds love she is transformed into more

confident person.

What has been the biggest challenge playing your character so far? It’s hard

playing a quiet character whilst also being so exposed on stage.
