States Air Force Academy out of more than 9,000 applicnts. !e yearbook Superlatives were revealed as well during the ceremony. Becca Hammon and Brandon Payer were named as the Athletes of the Year. Nick Cenedella and Cade Colosanti provided a light-hearted and fun atmosphere while transitioning from award to award. Overall, the night was fun for students and parents alike, and CHS wishes good luck to all the seniors.

!is summer is shaping up to be an absolutely huge season for the "lm industry, and while many might sigh at the large number of sequels and remakes on the table, isn’t that the perfect thing for the season, going to the theater and enjoying a big, over the top, action-packed joyride? Save the deep, intellectual dramas for the winter, and dive right into this year’s summer movie preview.

Godzilla: !e last time Godzilla was brought to American audi-ences in 1998, the "lm was met with mostly negative reviews, fans of the series angered by the unfaithful portrayal of the King of Monsters. !at’s all set to change on May 16th, when Godzilla stomps his way back to the big screen. After the last attempt at bringing the beast to the theaters, producers went back to basics and completely redesigned the creature, creating something much more faithful to the original 1954 design. !is "lm doesn’t just have the King of Monsters supporting it, Godzilla is also bolstered by Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame, as well as Aaron Tyler Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. If the absolutely theater-shaking trailers are any indication of the "lm, you won’t want to see this on DVD, you’ll want to "nd the biggest IMAX screen around.

Transformers: Age of Extinction: In 2011, Transformers: Dark of the Moon absolutely destroyed the box o#ce, collecting more than one billion dollars and becoming the seventh highest grossing "lm in history. Despite this success, the Transformers "lms have always been received negatively for it’s bad writing and acting. !ings may be changing this summer, with Age of Extinction. In an attempt to change things up, Shia Labeouf has been replaced with Mark Wahlberg, and director Michael Bay has decided to give the movie a darker tone. Taking place four years after the invasion of Chicago in the last "lm, humanity has grown fearful of the Transformers, forcing Optimus Prime and his Autobots into hiding from their once-allies. But when an ancient evil threatens Earth, the Autobots must reveal themselves and re-unite with humanity to save the planet. Transformers: Age of Extinction hopes to transform the box o#ce on June 27th.

Guardians of the Galaxy: So far, Marvel Studios hasn’t had a $op ; every one of their titles, from Iron Man to Captain America, have absolutely dominated the box o#ce, but this August, Marvel Studios is taking a big risk with their newest "lm Guardians of the Galaxy. Taking place in deep space, this newest "lm introduces the cosmic element of the Marvel Universe, introducing characters like Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and the talking tree Groot (Vin Diesel). Guardians of the Galaxy won’t be taking itself too seriously, with comedic elements thrown into the action, and like all Marvel movies, they are sure to tie into the next Avengers "lm. Guardians of the Galaxy launches into theaters on August 1st.

!e new generation of mobile gaming has arrived. !is new age game proves popular with Google’s “Ingress,” created by Niantic-Labs@Google.

Ingress is a massively-multiplayer-online (MMO) augmented-reality game where its players use real-world aspects as their playground. Players of the game move throughout the world using their Android device and GPS technology to attack and claim “portals” that are centered on man-made structures or points of interest. !e objective of Ingress is to claim and control large areas by linking these portals together to form triangles. !ere are two factions, each competing in a global battle. !ese factions are the Enlightenment, and the Resistance. Each are in"uenced by the game’s storyline and vice versa, unlike other video games of today. !e players as a whole can change the events within the story, as it is written out in real time. Ingress has only been released to Android but the iOS version is said to still be in development. It is free to download and free for anyone with a Google Account (Gmail). Starting the game on the device is simple and straightforward; as it begins the player with tutorials that will walk him/her through the major aspects of the game. Ingress even creates a temporary portal nearby if there are no “real” portals nearby to teach the player how to interact with them. Ingress requires traveling, and the density of portals depends on where that player is located. Portal density increases moving into urban and suburban regions, Denver being a great playground for Ingress players. However, in Conifer, portals can be up to 5 miles apart but players can always submit their own portals, which must be manmade and accessible by the public. Playing also requires strategic planning. Ingress includes its own Intel map that is accesible via a web browser, which is at ingress.com/intel. Playing almost feels like being a secret agent defending or changing humanity for the future. It truly is a unique game. For more infomation about the game, visit Ingress.com

A new game called “Smash Hit” is now in the top ten popularity charts in both the Apple app store and the android market. !e object

of the game is to shoot silver balls at glass objects to either move the object out of the way of the players path, or to shoot a glass triangular shape that gives the player more silver balls to use. As the player shoots his/her targets without getting hit by the obstacles in the way, the players begin to shoot more balls for less cost. !is game, though simple, is very enter-taining and worth playing. A very impressive feature about this game is the decently high graphics and the detailed design for a game on a tablet or smartphone. in the game there are nine levels/checkpoints then the game turns into in#nite mode. At each checkpoint the terrain changes into more di$cult chal-lenges. In the end ,”Smash Hit” is a smash-ing hit of a game that keeps you from being bored and a good way to burn free time.

Do you like pushing buttons and shouting at your friends? Space Team is perfect for such an occasion. !is mobile game is a cooperative multiplayer

“simulator” where players within the same room shout commands to one another as a team to keep their ship from falling apart. !e objective is reach hyperspace. Space Team is not visually centered, however the players will see a series buttons, knobs, and levers which are activated to advance the ship. !is kind of game is perfect for house parties, for friends hanging out at school and other small get-togethers. Players, with their mobile device, can pair via bluetooth or play over wi#. Unfortunately, the players have to be on the same network to play together, and preferably, in the same room. Otherwise how could you hear the others’ commands, and what would be the point of that? Over bluetooth, the devices need to run on the same platform. (Android to Android or Apple to Apple) Work as a team, cooperate, shout, and press a whole ton of buttons when the “technobabble” commands are given. Space Team is available for free on Android and Apple devices.

A Game about

Page Design: Johnathan Hurst

Page 9: May 2014

!is game is hard, just like writing this review. I almost have nothing to say about this right now. I haven’t played it enough to review it well, but from what I’ve played I’ve enjoyed. I’ve seen the “You Died” screen

for at least "fteen minutes for every hour that I’ve played, about 30 minutes of blood red “You Died” for every two hours of gameplay, which probably means that I don’t have the right to review it, but I’m working on it. !e "rst Dark Souls was a breakthrough in the hardcore gaming universe, because it’s hard, really hard. !e game was great not only because of the challenge of the game, but also because the game itself was dripping with atmosphere and the world felt like the ruins of a once great civilization, and you’re meant to prolong it’s life for another few terrible years until it’s inevitable armageddon. !at’s why Dark Souls 2 is great too, the atmosphere is very similar to that of it’s predecessor, although it’s more focused on the player rather than the world, but if it’s more Dark Souls, I’m "ne with it. Hopefully it’s a sequel with heart and e#ort put into it, not just another shameless cash grab like other well known game series. Cough, Call Of Duty, Cough.

Today one of the most popular games for Apple and android is

Clash of Clans. !is game is a game of strategy and patience. !e overall goal of Clash of Clans is to build your base in a way where your defences are strong and your resources are strong. !e more you upgrade and build your base then more powerful you become in the game. As you keep upgrading your base, every building gets a new design. !is is probably why this game has stayed so popular over time, because of the human curiosity to explore new things. One of the best features of Clash of clans is the clan castle. !e clan castle allows you to join a group of people that you can trade troops with. Once you build your clan castle in the game you can either make your own clan or join someone else's clan. When you are in a clan with friends you can chat with the other players who are in your clan. Also, Clash of Clans has announced that their next update will have clan wars. Senior Joe McNamara has made his own clan called. “SpartanRage”. Joe McNamara said "Once you get started, you want to keep playing to make your base bigger and better. It’s also a good multiplayer game." !e multiplayer features are some of the things that help make Clash of Clans so popular. As you begin to grow your base, you have to wait longer and longer for each upgrade. As a result, that adds a big and long downside to the game. Clash of Clans is in the top ten free games in both the App store for Apple and the Play Store for Android. Overall the game is a fun experience of strategy, battle, and creation that is recommended to anyone with the ability to download and play it.

Dots is a game about connecting. !is is a very simplistic game where the objective is to match and “cross out” dots of like colors

on a board. Yet this simplicity is highly addictive. !ere are four game modes to choose from. Timed: cross out as many dots within 60 seconds. Moves: cross out as many dots in 30 moves. Challenges: play against a friend on the device and Facebook. Also, Endless, which is only available in the paid-app version. !e beauty of Dots is brought out by its sleek UI (User Interface), quick, smooth animations, and its potential to hook the player for long periods of time on end. Dots is sure not to fade as time progresses, and is sure to keep the player coming back for the entertainment it brings. !e game is available for free on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Careful, don’t get hooked when there’s something to be done.

Captain America: !e Winter Soldier was a good movie, especially compared to the "rst movie. Spoiler alert! !e "rst movie was basically a montage of Captain America being skinny and not Captain America, then at training

camp, then being Captain America in the all of those shows with singing and dancing, and then "ghting Nazis and being frozen in ice after killing the red skull. For a movie that’s already 3 years old and one of the most popular Marvel movies yet. !e Winter Soldier, on the other hand is a pretty great movie. !e "rst quarter of the movie is a little slow creating all of the plot that a movie needs to have, but not doing a great job of evenly spacing out the plot-points into manageable chunks so it really just feels like a giant heaping plate of plot

cake, which is good but I don’t really feel like eating all of that cake right now, but overall it goes down smoother than one might think. Overall the new Captain America movie was pretty good, good plot, good character development, good mystery, etc. !e feel of the movie is less action more mystery, so less like !e Avengers and more Mission Impossible, which is pretty good, because they’re both good iin their own ways. 4 out of 5 stars.

Sam Prince and Kelsie Treloar are two col-lege bound athletes whose fates might be tied together through mutual love of soccer. Both girls are going to play college soccer, but for two di!erent college teams. Kelsie Treloar will be heading o! to John-son and Wales University, while Sam Prince will be attending Doan University. “It was truthfully a surprise,” Prince said. "e shock was due to the rarity of position openings in teams. Prince explained that a team only really needs one goalie and it is a very competitive position. Despite the chal-lenge, Prince was still able to make the team and get the position. Since Prince was about 4 years old, sher soccer coach, Mark Friedreich been guiding her along her soccer career. In her #rst couple years of soccer, Prince was already playing a year or two above her grade on the boys’ team. Phil Caldwell is the coach for the entire Coni-fer Girl’s soccer team. Tyler Je!ers is a volun-teer coach. He spends one on one time with Prince helping her with speci#c goalie skills. Prince plans on majoring in engineering during her time at Doan University. Over the summer she plans on interning at the Bureau of Recreation at the Denver Federal Center in the civil engineering department. She said that her mom, Ruth McElroy, was the inspiration for her to start considering the possibility of engineering as a career. As for Kelsie Treloar, her family has been involved with Conifer for quite a few years. Her brother, Anthony, graduated from CHS in 2006, and was also part of the soccer pro-gram. Her mother made a point to say how much Kelsie has grown from watching her big brother play the sport. Treloar’s new coach from Johnson and Wales actually made a point to come and sup-port her during her Lobo Trax interview. Her high school coaches, both Phil Caldwell and Mark Friedreich spoke about the unique element Treloar brought to the #eld. “She developed from a freshman, unsure of her abil-ity, into the linchpin of the team,” said coach Friederich.

“She is a quiet leader who lets her work on the #eld do the talking,” said coach Caldwell. Coach Caldwell also described Treloar as a “star” when she #rst came on as a freshman. Caldwell shared how surprised he was when she made varsity her freshman year. After all her years of DECA at Conifer High, Kelsie Treloar plans on pursuing a business major. At Conifer, Treloar has been involved in DECA. Both girls played out their last season of high school soccer as Seniors at Conifer. "eir season ended on April 26th in a game against Glenwood Springs High School. "rough-out the season both Prince and Treloar have ranked highest in statistics in the district. Kel-sie is a leader in assisted goals, and total points while Sam is a leader in saves. All four years of their high school careers, Prince and Treloar played on varsity.

At some point next year the girls will once again share a soccer #eld, although on opposing sides. "ese two seperate teams will be playing eachother in their league. "ey both say that they are looking forward to the friendly competition, and even said that it will be like a reunion.

Junior Emily Jones doesn’t wear her pink cowboy boots to school just for fashion. !ose boots have seen more than the pristine "oors of Conifer High School, they’ve witnessed muck, dirt, and anything else that a cowgirl might come across in her lifetime.

Whether the soles of those boots are trudging through mud or are stuck in the stirrups of a thick leather western saddle, Jones relies on them to carry her through no matter what situation might arise. But, being a professional cowgirl requires much more than trust in your boots. Jones must also have con#dence in her horse, a creature that could potentially kill her, but she still dares to ride. !is isn’t anything new for Jones, however. She has been in the 4-H horse program for 10 years and is a Park County rodeo princess. But this year, Jones strives to take it a step further, a step towards Park County lady-in-waiting, and a step closer to the ultimate goal of rodeo queen. !is will require complete dedication from Jones. It has taken her two years to become rodeo princess and another two years to get this close to lady-in-waiting. If she wins the title, she will have to compete a seminar though CAFS (Colorado Association of Fairs and Shows) where she will learn how to be royality. !ere, she will meet the current Colorado rodeo queen and her lady-in-waiting. However, before she gets that far, she will have to complete an interview, personality test, appearance, and speech in front of judges, then afterwards she will volunteer at the stock show. And, on top of that all, Jones must maintain an exceptional reputation. ”It’s very important to me to represent my county well. As such a prominent #gure it’s essential to always present yourself well. When you’re wearing a crown, people see you more than they would at any other time,” said Jones.

However, all this work doesn’t come without reward. Over the years, Jones has met Trevor Brazile, 19 time rodeo competition champion, and rodeo queens from all over the nation. For Jones, the Park County fair is more than just an event, it’s a yearly highlight. “I love being in the crowds and meeting new people. It’s so much fun to be able to see little kids faces light up when they see the crown; taking pictures with them makes my day. I also really love doing my hair and dressing up in the hat with the crown. Big hair makes me happy. the bigger the hair, the closer to God.” ”I really hope to win the Park County Lady-In-Waiting position because I love representing the county,” Jones said. !e winner of each position will be announced during the county fair (July 16th-21st) right before the livestock auction. For Jones, there is nothing else she would rather be doing than riding horses, meeting new people, and winning royalty. ”I really hope to win the Park County Lady-In-Waiting position because I love representing

the county,” said Jones.

have lived at one point. It seemed sel!sh to take from someone who couldn’t stop me. Someone who is gone. But, like I said, I broke that promise. I didn’t know whom the house belonged to, but when I stepped through the hole where the front door used to be, I knew instantly it wouldn’t be hard to forget that someone used to live there. "ere was no telling the di#erence between the rooms, I didn’t know where the kitchen used to be or the bathroom or even a bedroom. Cupboards were missing and scraps of who-knows-what scattered the singed carpet. "ere wasn’t a bed in sight, but I found a place to lay under a bit of ceiling so at least the snow couldn’t touch me. "e air was still cold and it took several minutes for me to !nd a comfortable position to lay in, but I eventually fell into a deep sleep and didn’t wake again until the following morning, today, when I could feel sunshine on my face. Let me tell you what sunshine feels like after not feeling it for months on end. It feels like a warm hug from a loved one, or light laughter in the air. It feels like the !rst bite of that 99 cent cheese-

It started snowing last night. It fell from the sky dark, ashen and cold. Cold ash, even worse than the warm stu!. It’s a reminder that the world is burnt and I can’t do anything to change it.Nevertheless, it made me break my promise, the promise I made myself. Last night was the "rst night that I slept in a house since the world ended. I "nally made it out of the city and found myself in an urban neighborhood not too far away. I could tell it was going to snow, the air was frosty and it was even darker and foggier than usual. Even though I couldn’t see the clouds through the smoke, there was no doubt in my mind that something would have to change. And that change started with a house. It was the only house on the block that had more than two walls and a roof that covered at least half of the structure. It was like a bright light in a dark void. How could I resist? I made a vow to myself earlier on that no matter what I wouldn’t take anything or do anything in a house where someone might

burger I’ve been craving for forever. It feels like heaven. And it looks like heaven as well. When I opened my eyes at last, I saw a small orb of light trying its best to penetrate through the dark air. It was small, yes, but it was more than I’ve seen in a very long time. It didn’t take me long to get ready this morning. My muscles felt like new in the sunlight and moved quickly to gather my belongings into my backpack. It’s not like I had much to pack anyway, just a bit of rope, a postcard of what Chicago used to look like, and a bent pocket knife. I didn’t take the time to examine each object like I usually do, I just stu!ed it in my pack almost carelessly. I was out of the house in little to no time and well into the tedious task of wandering through the streets. I made a point to follow the sun so it could not only warm my face as I ventured, but so that I would know I was headed east, to New York. My shoulders are growing stronger even though I am getting skinnier. "e straps on my backpack had left marks on my shoulders, but they don’t hurt anymore. It was just my feet that ache and legs that shake under my own weight. I ran out of food a while ago and am trying my best not to think about it, but it is hard not to when you realize that you’re so hungry your stomach doesn’t growl anymore. I don’t know when or where I will #nd food again, but I wasn’t about to break the next promise I made myself, I wouldn’t stop until I got to New York. "e neighborhood is quiet this morning, the clearer air makes the atmosphere feel even more empty than usual. However, this vibe is abruptly torn from me when I hear a sound echo from the streets ahead of me. A sound I never thought I would hear again. A cough. I stop in my tracks and take a minute to be sure that I wasn’t the one who had made the sound. Have I been reduced to a men-tal state where I mistake the noises I make for someone else? No. "ere it is again, and it’s even louder, almost obnoxious. I wait, standing sti! as a board, and stare into the distance where the air is still thick with smoke. Eventually, I begin to see a dark #gure emerging from the smog-gy air. It is hard to make out at #rst but as it gets closer I start to recognize it. It’s a person. My jaw drops and arms feel suddenly limp. No. It can’t be. I am the only one alive. "e #gure stops walking closer to me after a while and stands exactly how I am, motionless and full of shock. We stare at one another for a minute or two, unable to see each other’s faces, but still just as fascinated. My heart is beating in my throat and my mind can only think of one thing: run. And that’s exactly what I do. I let my legs take over and launch my body to the left and into the smoke. My arms pump at my side and I breathe in the polluted air, but no matter how much my lungs burns, I keep running at full speed. I sprint into a small alleyway in between two destroyed houses and #nd myself galloping across lawns of burnt grass, trying not to get caught in the chain link fencing that litter the dirt. I check over my shoulder before rounding another corner and to my relief, no one is following me. I take a tight turn around another house but am abruptly stopped by slamming against a hard surface on the other side. I let out a grunt when I hit the ground and scramble to stand up again, but I can’t get my footing

in the loose dirt. I feel a hand wrap around my bicep and heave me up rather e!ortlessly. But it doesn’t let go when I try to pull away, instead it holds onto me and grips harder the more I struggle. “Hold on there, Sweetheart,” a deep, husky voice chuckles a bit. I assume it belongs to the hand and a body I didn’t want to look at. I push at the tight #ngers with my own hand and whimper, trying to hold back tears with gritted teeth. No matter how much I thrash, I’m not getting anywhere. So I give up and let my body go limp so he is forced to hold me up. "e hand lets go of me and I drop to the dusty ground again with a hu!. I am still shaking and I feel as if I’m going to puke, I’m regretting that run now. “Before you take o! again,” I feel him drop down to the ground next to me, “let me o!er you a peace treaty.” I situate myself so I am sitting a little ways away from him and so I can see him dig through a bag resting at his feet. He pulls out a bright red apple and rolls it around in his palm before handing it to me. I take it from his #ngers without looking at his face and greedily shove it in my mouth, taking a big bite from its hard surface. "e sweet juices quench my thirst and run down my chin. I’ve never tasted anything so great in my entire life and want to savor every bite. "e stranger waits until I’ve eaten the entire apple before giving me any hint that he is still there. I still hadn’t gotten over the fact that someone is actually sitting next to me, that I’m not the last person on Earth after all. I don’t know if I want to accept it either. All this time I had convinced myself that I will be alone forever, and now I am proved wrong. I’m not sure whether I should feel relieved or terri#ed. “It doesn’t look like you’ve eaten in a while,” he laughs again but I don’t #nd it very amusing. No, of course I haven’t. “You don’t need to be shy!” He says in response to my silence. I just stare down at my shoes. “"e last two people on Earth should at least know each other’s names.” "e last two people on Earth. Could that really be true? We are the only ones left in this wasteland? I turn my head to look at him and am surprised by what I see. He is no older than I am, just a teenager. He has mahogany colored hair that sweeps over his forehead and sits messily on his head. He gives me a crooked smile and his eyes scrunch up like he is laughing at a good joke. He looks calm and almost as if he hadn’t quite realized what has happened to the world around him. “What’s your name?” He asks. “Avery,” I reply in a small voice. I still hadn’t taken my eyes o! of him. “Avery...” he rolls his hand in the air, wanting my last name as well. I hesitate. “Day,” I #nally tell him. “Well hello Miss Avery Day,” He holds out a hand for me to shake, “Hayes Smith.” I shake his hand limply, or rather let him shake my hand for me, and let it drop back down to my side after he lets go. “How long have you been out here, Miss Day?” He asks me while leaning back onto the ground with his arms folded behind his head. I don’t understand how he is so relaxed, my heart is still racing. “Since the world ended,” I say curtly. “Welcome to the club,” he chuckles.
