Our adult mission trip to Sky Ranch a Youth camp in the Poudre Valley will take place the week of May 13-17th. Last year 15 of us totally refurbished one of the retreat centers. It was absolutely amazing the difference a little hard work can make. Anyone can come we need people who can sew, build, paint, dig, carry trash or just about anything. Please check your calendar and see if you can help us it is really fun and you make a lot of new friends. You don’t have to come for the whole time a couple of days is just fine. Sky Ranch gives us a place to stay in their lodge and feeds us. We will be raising money to pay for supplies which Sky Ranch has estimated to be $2100.00 for the retreat center. There is a little cabin in the Narthex that you can drop a check or cash into or just put a check in the offering plate and mark it Adult mission trip. See Debby for more details. Semi Annual Meeting CLC will be holding its Semi Annual Meeting on Satur- day May 11th at 6:00 right after the Saturday service. We will be holding an election of members to Council, Legacy and Endowment and the Preschool Advisory Team. Please join us for a good old Lutheran pot luck. We are asking everyone to bring a main dish, salad, side dish, wine/beer or dessert to share. Join a Shepherds’ Dinner Group Shepherds’ groups are dinner groups of 8 people who meet four times in each other’s homes between May and September. Pastor Tom’s Message

Contrast

What shall we make of the events of the last two weeks of April? The Boston Marathon bombing, the senselessness of such violence has caught everyone’s attention in one way or another. Is it possible to get rid of such violence all together or will violence always be with us as long as there are human beings? What is a Christian response? In contemplating these and other matters pertaining to it, the word contrast comes to mind. Life is full of contrasts, dissimilarities such as the Boston Marathon and the terrorism.

One of the best commentaries I have heard in response to the recent terrorism comes from a commentator named Larry Mendnt with WPIX of New York City. In response to a headline that reads, “Terror returns” he says, “In truth it never left us.” And then goes on to describe how many acts of terror were prevented by various means including diligence of everyday people. Officially there have been 78 attempts prevented! But what I really like in his response is when he says, “we must be vigilant, but unafraid, live your lives, run your races and enjoy your freedoms.” The chances of any of us being directly involved in an act of radical terrorism is probably very slim, however there are plenty of other things in our lives that can prevent us to live our lives and run the race of life.

Our faith I do believe gives us the same message, “be vigilant, yet unafraid.” This contrast is what Mendnt refers to as a measured response. We are to do what we can and be prepared as much as possible and yet expect the unexpected. Beyond that, live our live and enjoy our freedoms. Even the president in his address at the memorial service for the victims quoted Scripture saying, “it teaches us, “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” At the same time do our best to preserve these gifts for the coming generations. The Christian response is a contrast of responsibility and pleasure; of contemplating events and yet going on; of action and trust. It can be heard in the words of Jesus when he says, “Do not be afraid…I have come so that you may have life, abundant life…” and “be watchful.” I would label all of this as the ordinary Christian life. It may be uneventful, however it is always ready; it is responsible yet extravagant; full of contrast. (Speaking of contrast how about the weather this spring!)

A Blessed Spring to all +See you in worship +Pastor Tom +

May 19 will be the last day for Sunday school this school year. It has been a wonderful year with our students. That acts of kindness wall has filled up greatly and flat pastor have made many sightings.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who have helped in one way or another this year from the prep team, helpers, teachers, and the leadership team of the coordinators and our youth and family director, we could have not done it without you.

Keep those flat pastor sightings coming in over the summer on your adventures! Harrington is an inner-city Denver school

that Christ Lutheran has adopted. Each year, CLC hosts a carnival at the school (located at 36th and York), typically on the first Saturday in May.

The carnival features games and a bounce castle. The carnival is free to all students and their families. There is also a food booth serving brats and hot dogs, soda, chips, candy and pickles that is free to everyone in the school.

Donations of hot dogs, brats, soda, small bags of chips, pickles and candy bars are being accepted for the food booth. Dona-tions of booth prizes are also being collected. If you are interested in giving a cash donations to offset the $2000 we spend on games and prizes that would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers to help run the carnival may sign-up on the response sheet. Working this event makes a great service project for individuals, families, small groups, and confirmation groups. If you are going to work please arrive no later than 10:00 am.

News from the PreschoolFor us in the preschool it is hard to believe school will be over later this month and some of our caterpillars will leave us as butterflies! We will be very busy practicing for our graduation ceremonies, as well as, displaying artwork for our Art and Dinner Show.

The preschool will also have a small silent auction at our dinner with things gathered from our wonderful and supportive parents. This evening will be a great deal of fun for our families.

We want to take a moment to thank the congregation for the support shown at our Appreciation Sunday and thank everyone who brought cookies to share. We are blessed to be a part of an exciting ministry and we will look forward to our Summer Camp sessions and next school year! Many blessings and have a great summer. Deb and Blair

Dynamite: Exploding for Christ! We had a great time learning, putting together books of the Bible puzzles, and playing fun games outside in April. We will not have a youth group meeting in May. All youth are invited to help with the Harrington Elementary Carnival on Saturday, May 4.

Confirmation camp at Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp is June 9-14. Registration information is available in the youth hallway.

This spring concludes our 3rd year of the Dynamite youth group. We are thrilled with the success of the group and send our 6th graders on to confirmation with confidence in what they have experienced in Dynamite. Thank you to the adults who had a dream about an elementary youth group and worked hard to make the group a reality at CLC.

Special thanks to Cheryl Burton, Heidi Jason, Chris Hegele, and Erika Alpern for being on the leadership team.

Pastor DJ’s Message6 Month ReviewMuch to my amazement, May 15th will mark 6 months since I first arrived at Christ Lutheran Church. I still get the question from time to time about how my family is adjusting to Colorado and how I feel about this place, so in honor of my semiversary

(yes I know this is not a word but it appears in Urban Diction-ary so that counts for something) here are my thoughts about life, Colorado, and everything.First, I think we can all agree that April’s brand of spring can be done now. I look forward to the weather that May will bring. Since I arrived just before Christmas more or less all I have seen is winter. I am a lover of snow and a cold weather person, but as I anticipate riding my bike more and more, the shimmer on the snow has lost its luster. Just about every day I check the weather back in Ohio as well, and I’m sad to say that Ohio has had better weather at least since spring “started.”I think it goes without saying that both this church and this area are great for families. There is no shortage of places to go or events to attend. In fact I could claim that it’s sad that we are unable to attend all the things that we are interested in. It has been a blast to try a number of new things and join in some of the ministries of the congregation. The staff of this congregation is very diverse and yet works amazingly well together. I think this is a tremendous gift to the people here because everyone tends to their tasks with their own skills and excels because they fit their role. The volunteers and leaders from the congregation are similarly gifted and focused. I think we are blessed by all the people that show up and hopefully we can continue to find meaningful ways for people to connect and work together. And now for the lightning round of thoughts:• I think this is the first year I ever gained weight over Lent. • Colorado parking lots are even worse than Ohio parking lots.• This place has a very joyful Spirit, which is a great gift to the broader church.• The mountains are a breath of fresh air every time I see them.• I love how fast the church feels like it is moving, even if it is sometimes hard to keep up.My family will back me up that even for all the pain and change of moving across the country we have really enjoyed our time here so far and look forward for the months and years to come.Peace,Pastor DJ

Volunteer of the MonthWho doesn’t know Carl Douhan? Some may think they know him as a six-year member here at Christ Lutheran Church. Some may recognize him from helping usher on occasion when needed with a Worship Team. Others may say that he coordi-nates and helps a lot with maintenance items around the Church. Still others might relate him to our Stewardship Team. And if you said you know him from Sunday readings, our recycling program, or our men’s group functions, you’d ALL be right!

When Carl’s not performing his duties as a staff member at Wildland Fire Associates, woodworking, spending time outside, and supporting his grandkids, he’s devoted to helping our church. In a recent conversation I had with Carl, he said that he feels “…the Lord has given a lot in his life and I want to give some back.” Maybe that’s why there’s no good way to calculate the hours he gives each week, nor keep track of the projects that he’s helped complete.

One of Carl’s favorite accomplishments was the 3 days he spent on a scissor lift retrofitting our sanctuary lights – reducing our lighting bill by 10-20%!

If Carl could make any more of a positive impact on our church, he’d really like to get other people who aren’t currently involved in church activities become involved… to build a true sense of community here at CLC.

I think that if we had more folks like Carl in our congregation, our church’s potential could be unlimited. Thank you for all that you do Carl Douhan!!!

Scrip UpdateSchool will be out before we know it. Scrip gift cards make great teacher gifts! Order forms are in the narthex, or check the GL Scrip website at www.glscrip.com for a complete list of available gift cards. From April 13 through May 24, some of the most popular retailers (Barnes & Noble, Target, Panera Bread and Walmart) are offering smaller denomination gift cards, in $5 and $10 amounts. These cards will sell out quickly, so plan ahead!

UPCOMING UGANDA TRIPCarol will be in Uganda from early June to mid-July along with three other volunteers from the U.S. Our emphasis this summer will be on community planning with Agwata and several nearby very small villages, plus doing preliminary planning work on establishing a small health clinic in that same area. A third volunteer will be teaching English and number skills to both our women beaders and the older school children. Needed items are: cash donations to purchase needed medicines and medical supplies (at wholesale prices in Uganda) to treat common medi-cal ailments such as worms, malaria, diarrhea, fevers, cough and high blood pressure. Carol will also be taking various knitted items with her donated by the CLC Chicks With Sticks Group. Thanks to Joanne Edmunds, Darlene Danyo and Chicks with Sticks for donated items from 2012 of: Peace Pal knitted dolls, shawls and baby caps!

HELPING OUR JINJA BEADERS BECOME HOMEOWNERSWe are completing the first phase of our campaign to raise money to buy land so our Jinja beaders can become homeown-ers. We still desperately need $7,500. $49,500 has been raised so far. Once the land is purchased, other Ugandan nonprofits and UN Habitat will help our Ugandan women obtain very low cost home loans to cover the building cost. Donations can be made via check or credit card.

AGWATA SCHOOL EXPANSION!Outreach Uganda’s newest beader group is in Agwata, just 25 miles south of Sudan. The beaders resettled the area of Agwata after years of war and living in refugee camps, and they began beading for Outreach Uganda in 2010. Money earned through beading allowed the group to buy goats and chickens, and in 2011 they began beekeeping and planting a few cash crops. The entire Agwata community has worked to build and support the Agwata primary school. The school opened in February 2010 and now provides education for over 370 students in pre-school through fifth grade. Outreach Uganda partnered with the commu-nity to add two classroom blocks in 2012, and raised funds to build two more, beginning this May. Each block will house two classrooms and will replace a crumbling, mud and thatch struc-ture. The community has contributed by providing earthen bricks, river sand and small rocks needed for construction.

OUTREACH UGANDA MAY UPDATE

CHILD SPONSORSHIPWe are still seeking sponsors for children of our beaders in Agwata. Children in Uganda do not have free public education. Many families in Agwata can only provide for their basic living needs and cannot afford the “luxury” of an elementary educa-tion for their children. Your sponsorship allows a child to attend school, and opens a door for a different life. Please help. For most primary school children, sponsorship is $21 per month ($252 per year).

OU NEWSLETTER We published our first newsletter in April. If you would like to receive monthly email newsletters updates, please send Carol your email address.

OUTREACH TO OTHER CHURCHESDo you have a connection to another church in the Denver area or within the U.S. that might like to partner with us in helping start or expand a small church in northern Uganda? If so, please let us know!

Some of them have been adopted already so please check the sign-up sheet that is attached for availability. The duties include weeding, pruning, planting and dead-heading. This is a wonderful way to keep our church looking great!!!
