Our cover this month features William Reddaway and Strider– his 11-year-old horse – who, together, are attempting toraise £250,000 for two charities by completing a 2,500 mile‘Ride Round England’.William, 65, was born and grew up in London, but

Gloucestershire has been his home since 1984. He’s asupporter of Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre Riding for theDisabled, helping young people in London who, as he says,“have struggles that I never had, and don’t have the smiles andlaughter I’ve enjoyed.”But William and Strider’s efforts will also contribute greatly to

supporting young people in our county too. The FamilyHoliday Association, which helps many hundreds of families indire circumstances to have a simple break, has made acommitment to use funds raised by the ride to give holidays toat least 20 Gloucestershire families.Up and above his main fundraising target, William will help

the Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Association to raise£5,000 for their activities. This local charity, based atCheltenham Racecourse, is only a mile from where he lives –William looks down to the racecourse from Cleeve Hill everytime he rides out.The challenge – for William and Strider – is to travel to the

four corners of England! They will pass through towns andcities, visiting 30 Cathedrals and Abbeys en route. Williamwants to make enough noise as possible (he is learning to playthe trumpet) to help him surpass the £250,000 target.The pair start their adventure on Saturday 11th May, starting

and finishing at the Farncombe Estate (on the side of theCotswolds near the village of Broadway) where Williamworked from 1983 to 2011. They will be visiting GloucesterCathedral at 10am on Monday 13th May, so why not popalong and support them? The ride will take 6 months or more– a long, tiring journey for both horse and rider. Chocolate, Cherry& Walnut BrowniesIngredients:200g/7oz unsalted butter200g/7oz dark chocolate (I use Sainsbury’s ‘Basics’)3 large eggs300g/101⁄2 oz granulated sugar2tsp vanilla extract125g/41⁄2oz plain flourPinch of salt100g/31⁄2 oz dried cherries100g/31⁄2 oz walnut piecesMethod:1 Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4.2 Grease and line a 20x30cm (8-12in) rectangularbaking tin, 3-4cm (1-11⁄2 in) deep, with greaseproof orparchment paper.

3 Melt the butter and chocolate either in a bowl over apan of simmering water or gently in the microwave.

4 With an electric whisk, beat together the eggs, sugarand vanilla extract until they are thick and creamy.

5 Mix in the melted chocolate and butter.

6 Finally, stir in the flour, salt, cherries and walnuts.7 Pour into baking tin and cook for about 25 minutesuntil the top is cracking and the centre is just set.

8 Leave to cool in the tin for about 20 minutes beforecutting into squares.

with a light garlic, chilli, cream and seafood sauce,served with a timbale of spaghetti. I was given a speciallobster ‘tool’ to get the meat out but was not sure if Iwas using it right, anyway the shell looked empty whenI had finished – it was delicious! I followed this with aHerefordshire Angus rump with The Parrot’srenowned triple cooked chips, and a most refreshingCitrus Panna Cotta for dessert.My husband had the Carpaccio of Beef for starter,

and our son had the Spanish King Prawns & Chorizo– the presentation of both was as beautiful as theytasted. They decided to share their main courses –Whole Lobster and 16oz T-bone steak – anddescribed both as ‘awesome’. From the impressiveselection of home made desserts, they chose CremeBrulee and Chocolate & Caramel Mousse – scrummy!

An array of choices on the menuOther features that made our evening a joy from

start to finish included the attentive andaccommodating attitude of the staff, especially helpfulwhen you have such an array of choices on the menuand you don’t know what to pick!The venue itself is much more than your regular

‘pub’ – it’s spacious, yet warm, and the refurbisheddining area is a pleasure to eat in. There’s no Juke Boxor TV – just pleasant background music – and parkingcouldn’t be easier, the large Portland Street car park isjust across the ‘one way system’ about a minute’s walk.

Massive £4.5 million investment inDean Close Prep School’s futureThose of you who drive down theLansdown Road in Cheltenham cannot failto see the huge building project underway atDean Close Preparatory School. Thisbuilding, which is due to be completed inautumn 2013, will provide a new state ofthe performing arts centre, additional musicsuite, academic classrooms and formalreception area. The building will replace theold school hall which was built in the 70’s.

The new theatre, which will be used fordrama, music performances, schoolassemblies and examinations, will also havebackstage facilities including a Green Room.

Attached to the hall will be eight teachingareas, which will be located over two floorsand will include a dedicated IT suite andDrama rooms. These new classrooms willenable the Prep School to locate subjectsmuch more in faculty groups to furtheradvance cross - curricular teaching andlearning.

A music suite will also be included whichwill link the current Music School to the newdrama and performance space. This willcomprise five music practice rooms and adedicated guitar room.

The building will also provide a formalreception area where parents and visitorscan be welcomed into the school.

The building has been designed in acontemporary manner reflecting the

No battles atBattledown!Situated to the south-east of Cheltenham town centre,Battledown Estate lies on elevated ground rising toover 500 feet above sea level.

The Estate, similar to that of Pittville, was originallyestablished as a private housing development in thenineteenth century and still survives as such to thisday.

The site was first recorded as the fortress of Baedala,a Saxon chieftain who lived there around 500 AD.Later, as part of agricultural lands belonging to theAbbey of Cirencester, the area became known asBadleton which was later corrupted to Battledown.

No known battle took place there, although there wasa skirmish of minor proportions nearby during theEnglish Civil War period.

In 1643, the Earl of Essex, for the Parliamentariancause, marched from London to raise the siege ofGloucester – then surrounded by Royalist forces. TheEarlʼs forces passed through the Battledown area,driving Cavaliers out of Cheltenham towardsPainswick.

A building in Hales Road, near the junction withHewlett Road once traded as the Battledown Inn andbore a sign depicting a clash between Roundheadsand Cavaliers, but this has long since disappeared – acasualty in the decline of the public house trade.

This spring has come so late that everything will be in a rushto catch up! I read an article that said if the soil hadn’twarmed up enough to get some vegetable seeds in by mid-April the farmers would be facing lots of problems withinsufficient time for them to take advantage of the optimumlevels of light to grow before the days start to shorten again!As I write this in April the weather has finally given us ataster of spring – the cherry trees are on the verge ofbursting into blossom, albeit a good month later than usual.Now you will probably have a very well weeded garden

if you have taken any notice at all of my columns in the lastcouple of months! This will really benefit you from thismonth onwards as things zoom into growth. Tidy up springflowering plants such as Helleborus x hybridus (deadheadif you don’t want them to seed), Pulmonaria (cut off all thetatty leaves and old flowerheads) and Euphorbiapolychroma and E. Griffithii (shear off the top third of theplant to keep it deadheaded and a nice shape).You should be able to start hardening off tender

herbaceous plants which you may have bought in thetempting indoor displays in the garden centres andnurseries. This consists of a couple of weeks of taking themoutside during the day, and popping them back into thegreenhouse or conservatory at night – gradually leavingthem for longer and longer until they are out all night. Keepan eye on the weather in case of frosts etc. (althoughgoodness knows we really shouldn’t get any this late on!).You can make a cold frame out of old windows, Perspexoff-cuts etc., and place in a warm sheltered spot. Raise thelid in the day to circulate the air and cover over at night ifyou have no greenhouse.Sow some runner beans as the soil warms up, making a

wigwam of bamboo canes for the beans to twine up. Thecultivar ‘White Lady’ is very pretty if you fancy white flowersfor a change.

Tyres are arguably the most important safety

component on a car. Badly worn or illegal tyres can lead to a potential accident, a brush with the police and possibly an MOT failure. The MOT test has been toughened up recently and it includes more components and systems that must be checked and be working correctly to ensure a pass. However, tyres are still one of the most frequent components that lead to an MOT failure.

T&H Motorist Centre, team Protyre has an experienced

and knowledgeable staff that is on hand to help and assist local motorists with servicing and tyre replacement

to ensure that their vehicle will pass the MOT. For car drivers tread depth and tyre pressures are vitally important to staying safe on the road. Tyres with less than the legal 1.6mm of tread risk an ac-cident, particularly in the wet and at the extreme can affect a car’s handling. T&H also advises motorists to steer clear of buying part worn or second-hand tyres. Apart from the fact that they offer very poor value for money, they can be dangerous or illegal.

Before setting out for an early spring break T&H

recommend the following safety tyre checks:• check all tyres for tread

depth and general condition. All tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm.

• check pressures and adjust if necessary. If you are unsure of the pressures for your vehicle, check the

manufacturer’s handbook or call into T&H for advice.

• check for uneven wear to ensure that wheel alignment and balance are correct, or this could lead to premature wear and replacement.

• check for tyre age, if the tyres on the vehicle are more than 8 to 10 years old, they should be replaced.

• And don’t forget the spare in the boot!

The races are over and we survived again without anymajor drama, which is clearly nice to see after all theplanning and hard work that went into the week. I think Iam correct in saying that more planning and preparationwent into this years Festival than at any other meetbefore, in an attempt to keep good order and have lesscrime. I think we were successful. Crime was down fromlast year’s figures and, having worked the last few years,I am sure the 2013 event was the most peaceful.Apart from a few minor scuffles and some sporadic

thievery, the week went off without anything of note.Considering there were hundreds of thousands of peoplemoving through or partying in Cheltenham, I am alwaysslightly surprised how well behaved most people are. Theinclement weather may have helped but – withoutargument to the contrary – I am taking the credit!Credit must in reality go to all the differing agencies

involved such as the local authority, the licensing industry,the Police, the staff at Prestbury Park, the Street Pastorsand the variety of agencies and voluntary groups whichhelp make the Cheltenham Festival such a wonderfulevent.One of the additions to the Town Centre was the Police

‘hub’ which was located outside M&S on the High Street.This is something which I have been after for some time– a mini police station and ambulance triage point right inthe centre of things. It was well received and was a featurefrom first thing in the morning to last thing at night; andsomething which I hope we can replicate next year andaugment if possible. It basically brought the emergencyservices right into the ‘action’ and created a safe space forall. We gave out water, gave out advice, gave outinformation and helped dozens of lost soles find their wayback to reality. A real win win for all.The more mundane aspect of Policing continues

however as we ready ourselves for the warmer months(please God) and the challenges they always bring. I willbe meeting my supervisors overthe next week or so to set inplace our plans for the next 12months – how we will bereducing crime and creating apeaceful Cheltenham, but stilltargeting the thieves and drugdealers and getting as many ofthem locked up as possible. Yourlocal policing team will be, onceagain, at your service during thecoming months so please do nothesitate to call us if you think wecan help. Keep ’em locked!
