NEWSLETTER Governor’s Message for May

All through this Rotary year, I’ve been asking Rotarians and Rotary Clubs to spend some real time and effort to “Reach Within” and think about what Rotary means to them. As I have visited clubs and heard about their projects, I am struck by the fact that our most successful Rotary Clubs are the ones that have a clear vision of what Rotary means to them, and how Rotary can help our world. many forms―as RI President Elect Sakuji Tanaka says, it is not just an absence of war, it is personal well-being; it is having clean water to drink, food to eat, medical care when you need it, economic prosperity and an absence of physical conflict. Every day, in every community where Rotary is, we can make peace―and that alone would be enough to answer the question “Why Rotary” for me.But there is more. Rotarians don’t just strive to do good things for other and work for peace―we strive to be good people. Unlike most civic or community organizations, ethics and integrity are a fundamental core value of our organization. We aren’t people who get together once a week to go something nice for someone else; we are people who, every day of our lives in everything we do, commit to being truthful; to being fair to all; to building goodwill and friendships; and to trying to benefit our entire world. We often hear the buzz-words about building “win-win” relationships―Rotarians have been committed to that since we began. We are human beings; we may not always succeed every day in being the kind of people we want to be, but we are committed to doing our very best. Why Rotary? Because it gives me the opportunity to partner with people who are committed to being good, and doing good. The details might be a little different; one Rotarian may be passionate about his or her own community, and another about clean water and sanitation in Africa, but our core values bring us together. Why Rotary? Service. Fellowship. Integrity. Leadership. Diversity. That’s why.

Rocking on . . .

April 21 brought amazing weather and great crowds to the first ever Bishop Sunrise Earth Day celebration at the Bishop City Park (well, it was the second Bishop Earth Day celebration, but the first sponsored by Bishop Sunrise).

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIASome Rotary “Firsts”: Rotary’s first Convention in the Southern Hemisphere was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1948. The first year the Rotary Foundation received total contributions of $1 million in a single year was 1964-65. Rotary’s first appeal for aid to disaster victims was in 1913 when $25,000 was given for flood relief in Indiana and Ohio.

After lots of hard work, Glendale Sunrise has completed a beautiful literacy garden for the students at the John Muir School in Glendale.

Get Ready to IGNITE Your Club

PDG Chuck Reinhart Honored at Arch Klumph Society Induction

If membership is FUN...and it is...membership development just became even more fun with IGNITE! Led by RI Director Ken Boyd, we believe that if we IGNITE every Rotarian to assist in membership growth and retention, we will grow Rotary and increase our humanitarian efforts so desperately needed in our world. Get your Club Membership Development Chair to your District Assembly--it has been confirmed that for District 5280 the membership presentation will be about IGNITE and will be...you guessed it...FUN!

Our very own Chuck Reinhart and his late wife Yolanda were formally inducted into the Arch Klumph Society in March, 2012 at a very special ceremony in Evanston.

(For those of you who don’t know Chuck, he’s right smack in the middle of this picture). This is from the official RI website: “Charles Reinhart, an engineer, joined the Rotary Club of Glendale, California, in 1961, after serving as a charter member of the Rotary Club of Panorama City. He has been a district governor and a representative to the Council on Legislation. Before retiring in 1982, Charles switched careers and worked as a department store

manager. He now keeps busy as a private investigator and enjoys taking classes at a local university. Yolanda Reinhart, who died in 2006, was a math teacher and volunteer in the Glendale school district. The couple were married 50 years and have three children and two grandchildren”.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIAOne of the more recent Rotary traditions began in 1984-85 when the district governors decided to wear a distinctive yellow sport coat to official Rotary events. In succeeding years, the president of RI has selected a colorful jacket for the district governors and other international officers of Rotary. Blue has been picked the most often, but jackets have run the spectrum from maroon to bright red to green. This year has been a nice, quiet gray.

Please make your plans now to join your fellow District 5260 Rotarians for our “Farewell” District Conference on June 8 and 9, 2012 at Beverly Garland’s Holiday Inn in North Hollywood, California.Join us for the fellowship and the opportunity to see and hear more about the great things that Rotary does in the world. Friday night’s dinner will be our first event, and will be a “black tie optional” tribute to the history of our District. Then, Saturday morning we’ll look to the future with a morning plenary session featuring Past RI Director Paul Netzel as we “Reach Within” and look at great community and vocational service projects. Lunch will be when we recognize all our Clubs and the 2011-12 class of Presidents. That afternoon we’ll feature international service and the Rotary Foundation when we “Embrace Humanity.” Finally, we’ll close with a fabulous Saturday night dinner, including a keynote address RI President’s Representative Peter Bundgaard from the Rotary Club of Ry, Denmark, and the final award of the Silver Bells.SPACE IS LIMITED THIS YEAR― the Beverly Garland is a beautiful property, but the ballroom only holds 300 people, so once we’ve sold those, we’re full. Register right now so you won’t miss anything.More information is available at www.rotary5260.org.

Rotary Wheels at Willow SpringsThe Rotary Club of Lancaster West hosted a great day of fun and fundraising on April 7 at the Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond. They had a great turnout of people “lapping” their personal cars on the main track at the raceway, go-carting, “drifting” exhibitions and a steak dinner. All the proceeds are going to PolioPlus. The event was also a great awareness-raising project, as the event announcer made frequent announcements about Rotary’s polio eradication efforts. A great day in the sun!

AN INTERACT MINUTEby Camille Levee

Well, it is that time of year when really need to have our succession plan in place:

Who will be the officers for next year? What can we do over the summer, not only for fun, but for service? (at least 2 or 3 times!) Are there friends we could invite to these events?

Check with your sponsoring Rotary Club to see what they have planned, and "tag along".  Believe me, some of these clubs need young energy!

And start planning for back to school recruiting! All the planning ensures that there will be an active Interact Club, just like you joined, into the future!

And speaking of planning, this will be my last Interact Minute in District 5260---as of June 1, I will be in District 5510, Payson, AZ, where I have accepted a position as Executive Director of Time Out, Inc. a domestic violence and transitional shelter.

But rest assured, I am taking my lists with me, and will be looking for opportunities for cross club activities! (it's only 400 miles away!)

I wish you all the best for continued growth and success----you have made my role a breeze to fulfill---first with PDG Drew, and now with Gov. Tom.

The Race for the “Permanent Trustees” of the Silver Bells!

As everybody should know by now, we’ve got two separate contests going this year for the Silver Bells. On Saturday, June 9 at the end of the District Conference, we’ll announce the annual winners in the small, medium, and large club divisions. Those winning clubs will hold the Bells until July 1, 2013.We’ll also be announcing the “Permanent Trustees” for the Bells―the clubs that will take possession of the Bells on July 1, 2013. These clubs will shoulder the heavy responsibility of holding the Bells in trust for all of the clubs of the former District 5260. The Permanent Trustees will be the Clubs who donate the most to the Annual Programs Fund and the Polio Plus Funds of The Rotary Foundation through May 31, 2012. As of April 19, 2012, the following clubs are leading in their respective divisions:Large Clubs: Lancaster West―total contributions: $18,320.00Medium Clubs: Studio City-Sherman Oaks―total contributions: $10,011.00Small Clubs: Burbank Sunrise―total contributions: $15,073.00But it’s not over―the final determination will be made at the close of business on May 31, 2012. That gives your club a month to get those contributions in! And thank you to all of you who have been so generous in supporting our Rotary Foundation this year.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIA Two very special awards of recognition are occasionally presented by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation to Rotarians who render outstanding service to the Foundation. The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service recognizes significant and dedicated service by a Rotarian to promote Foundation programs and thus advance the Foundation’s goal of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world. The Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award is presented to a Rotarian who has received the Citation for Meritorious Service and whose outstanding record of service to The Rotary Foundation reaches beyond the district over an extended period of time.

The Rotary Club of Bishop continues its yearly tradition of giving Easter Gifts.

On March 31st 22 Rotarians and friends gathered at the home of Terry and Kay O’Brien’s home to assemble 350 Easter gift packages and baskets. During a three day period, April 2nd through April 4th, Rotarians delivered the gift packages and baskets to residents of the Sterling Heights Assisted Living home, the Methodist Church Soup Kitchen, and residents at the Bishop Care Center, those gathered at the Bishop Senior Center in the city park and to IMAH clients. The smiles and thanks for the Easter Good Wishes bring great joy to all members who contribute their time and money to bring a little happiness to folks who might not receive a personal Easter Greeting.
