No matter what happens to the plastic ring after I put it in the recycling bin, no animal will ever get trapped by it. We recently celebrated Holy Week because long ago, God looked down from heaven and had compassion on all of His sons and daughters who struggle to break free from the chokehold of sin. But unlike that duck, sin gets you and me so tangled that it is impossible for us to wiggle free on our own. We need outside help. John 3:16 declares that God sent this outside help to the world in the form of Jesus. On Easter we celebrated that you and I don’t have to remain tangled and strangled by the chokehold of sin. Jesus broke the shackles of sin and death by leaving behind an empty tomb. When Christ draws near to set us free, we can get scared and try to flee, or we can let ourselves be rescued. And when we let ourselves be rescued by the Lord, remember this: our Savior doesn’t just recycle, He resurrects. Easter blessings, Pastor David

MAY 2012

Pastor’s Remarks

A Word from the Pastor

As our nation moves toward another presidential

election in November, I am reminded of one of Carl

Sandburg’s poems in “The People, Yes” (#69). Sandburg

writes that a surgeon, an engineer, and a politician all

claimed that their profession was the oldest in the world.

They based their argument on God’s work of creation in

Genesis 1-2.

The surgeon: “My profession is the oldest.

God put Adam to sleep and took out one of his ribs in

order to make Eve.”

The engineer: “My profession is the oldest.

The world was in chaos, and God’s organized

development of it was the supreme engineering feat.”

The politician: “My profession is the oldest.

Who do you think made the chaos?”

It happened when Mary Ethel and I were living in

an apartment in Bristol. Behind our building was a

peaceful, wooded area with a creek. One day I was

reading on our back porch when I noticed a duck on a

little island in the middle of the creek. The duck was in

distress because its neck was caught in one of those

plastic rings which hold together a 6-pack of Cokes.

I hurried out and tried to get close enough to pull

the plastic ring away from the duck’s neck, but the scared

creature would not let me come near without making an

even bigger fuss and trying to flee from me. Not wanting

to make a bad situation worse, I backed off and tried to

think of how I could help. Fortunately, before I came up

with Plan B, the duck managed to wiggle its head free and

swim happily on its way.

That day I vowed I would never again throw away

a plastic drink ring so that no animal could get tangled up

or even choked to death. Before I recycle one, I cut each

of the individual rings apart. No matter what happens to

the plastic ring after I put it in the recycling bin, no animal

will ever get trapped by it.

We recently celebrated Holy Week because

long ago, God looked down from heaven and had

compassion on all of His sons and daughters who

struggle to break free from the chokehold of sin. But

unlike that duck, sin gets you and me so tangled that it

is impossible for us to wiggle free on our own. We

need outside help. John 3:16 declares that God sent this

outside help to the world in the form of Jesus.

On Easter we celebrated that you and I don’t

have to remain tangled and strangled by the chokehold

of sin. Jesus broke the shackles of sin and death by

leaving behind an empty tomb. When Christ draws

near to set us free, we can get scared and try to flee, or

we can let ourselves be rescued. And when we let

ourselves be rescued by the Lord, remember this:

our Savior doesn’t just recycle, He resurrects.

Easter blessings,

Pastor David
