I would like to thank the students, staff, parents and school community for another wonderful year at Santa Rosa High School. I am thrilled to have our Seniors graduate with a great educational foundation and head off into the world ready to start a new chapter in their lives. I am also happy to see our other students matur- ing and moving forward in their schooling. Our staff is celebrating the end of our 138 th year of pro- viding our community with a strong public education. This would not be possible if not for all of the parental support we get in the classroom, during clean-up days, in athletics, and through all of the events we have in drama, choir, dance, music, agriculture, clubs and other fine programs. We are still the “School of Choice” for many of our students, and there is a reason for this: our great teachers and programs, supportive parents, a dedicated staff and loyal school community help us in offering a successful school. Next year we will again have a growing student population (just over 2000 students) with a waiting list of students wanting to come to our school. We could not achieve this without the help of everyone involved. I want to thank our Student, Teacher, Parent Organization (STP), the Santa Rosa High School Foundation, Schools Plus and the Sonoma County Volunteer Center for helping our school both financially and/or with in- credible human resources to help continue supporting this school. Debate Casey Elsa, Debate Advisor [email protected] The SRHS Debate Team would like to thank all of the volunteers and staff that came out to help during the State Qualifying Tournament held over spring break. We hosted over a 1,000 students, teachers, coaches, and parents at our school and we could not have done this without the help that our volunteers offered. A hearty thanks also needs to be extended to the Vocational Education students and their teachers Ron Reichmuth and Monet Bell. They prepared two of the meals for the students and parents without any problems. What an amaz-ing blessing they are to our campus and our student body. The team also deserves kudos for an excellent year. Our team took home the Large School Parliamentary Sweepstakes win. This means that our school won more this season, in parliamentary debate, than any other school. As the program grows and prospers we hope to keep the victories coming. To that end, if you wish to donate to the team during our fundraising drive, we would truly appreciate it. You can do this by visiting the web site: http://giveyouthavoice.org. Once you get to the main page, just search for Santa Rosa High School to locate our fundraising page. Once again, thank you for all of your support, and Go Panthers!

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) The CAHSEE will be given May 8 (English) and 9 (Math) for Juniors and Seniors that need to pass, and for Sophomore make-ups. This state-mandated exam ensures that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate competency in English and Mathematics. By State law, all students must pass both the English and Math sections of the CAHSEE by the end of their senior year to earn a high school diploma. Santa Rosa High School (SRHS) traditionally has very strong CAHSEE scores, including last year’s sophomore class which had a passage rate of 92% versus a State average of 67%. Information about the CAHSEE program, including released test questions, is available at www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/resources.asp. It is important for those needing to take the exam to be in attendance. For best results: Get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast, take your time and do your very best.

SRJC Spring Grades for Seniors Seniors taking Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) classes to fulfill graduation requirements must pick up a form to take to their SRJC instructors for completion and return it to their SRHS counselor by May 18. Fail-ure to do this by the deadline will jeopardize their graduation.

Final Transcripts Any student taking classes at another institution, like the SRJC, needs to turn in final grades to the Counseling Office as soon as they are available online, so they can be placed on your High School transcript. Request your final HS transcripts to be sent to colleges before the end of the school year. Request forms are available in the SRHS Counseling Office. If you have any questions about diplomas or transcripts, please contact the Regis-trar, Patty Stage at 528-5594 or email to [email protected].

Diplomas Diplomas for graduating seniors will be available for pick up in the Counseling Office after June 11 when final grades are recorded. Loss of Privilege (LOP List) - Any student who owes fees to SRHS will need to return the materials or pay the fees before diplomas will be issued.

SRJC for Seniors A Counselor from SRJC will be at SRHS on May 9 to assist Seniors in enrolling in the summer orientation class, Counseling 270. Taking this course will give you an introduction to SRJC and allow you priority regis-tration for Fall classes. We highly recommend this course to all students planning to attend SRJC. Seniors should come to the computer lab (room 211) anytime between 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.. Please bring your Social Security number.

Scholarship Recognition We are extremely proud of our students and would like to assure that each scholarship recipient receives all due recognition. Please be sure to inform the Main Office of every scholarship offer your student receives, whether they choose to accept it or not. They will be honored with their peers at the Senior Awards Assembly.

SRHS Awards Nights The 9th-11th Grade Awards is on May 10. The Senior Awards is on May 17. Both events will be held in the SRHS auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Free Tutoring Free tutoring is available to any student seeking support! Tutoring is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in room 143.

Annual Fund Campaign 2011/12 Update – Hitting it out of the park! The Foundation’s 2011-2012 Annual Fund Campaign gives members, parents and other community supporters an opportunity to make donations for general school needs, specific Departmental funding and gifts to increase the Foundation’s Permanent Endowment Fund. The success of this year’s campaign is incredible and, to date, far exceeds the results of last year’s campaign. The Foundation, the school and our students appreciate all of our campaign contributors. Through February, the Foundation received $39,310 in support of the campaign. The breakdown includes $25,170 in unrestricted contributions including memorials, $3,230 directed Departmental gifts benefitting the Library, Industrial Tech-

nology, and Athletic programs, and $10,910 supplementing existing permanent endowment funds. In addition, our ONE THOUSAND PANTHERS program has added $40,850 in unrestricted permanent endowment funds. You can still make your tax deductible donation in support of this year’s Annual Campaign by completing and sending the response form below. We gratefully thank every contributor as your donations absolutely make a difference in the quality of student academic and sports programs at SRHS. STP Update Susan Burch, STP President 526-1044 [email protected] Ok, so has this been the fastest school year ever? This is the last Panther Purr for the year and school is buzzing with tests, sports activities, dance preparations and graduation plans. We are all spinning from the flurry, which makes me think that this just might be the right time to take a deep breath, and take a look at the past few months before plunging into the next six weeks. Has this been the school year you had hoped for your student? Have you been involved in your child’s school, even in some small way? It’s not too late, and there is still plenty to do. Prom needs volunteers, Senior Awards and Senior Breakfast do as well, and without your help these events cannot happen. If you are interested in helping with any of the events on the horizon, please contact me.

I would like to take a line or two, to welcome all the incoming freshmen and their parents. Santa Rosa High School is a highly spirited campus, made up of helpful and unique people and I hope that your experience here will be rewarding and worthy of many fond memories. I look forward to meeting you in August.

Marla Stuart who has been the Editor of the Panther Purr for years now will be moving on with her graduating daughter, Else Stuart. Thank you for everything, you are amazing. I’m pleased to announce that Patti Crandall has volunteered to be our new editor. Thank you so much Patti! You can send items for next year’s Purr to her at [email protected].

Last month’s STP meeting was interesting, with Government teacher extraordinaire, Andy Brennan attending to explain the Home On-line Access website to us parents, why some teachers use it and many don’t. Parents look-ing to use it had questions as to why it isn’t used and some parents weren’t aware that we had it. It’s an easy fix, just takes money and time; anybody got a few bucks we can borrow?

We hope to see a new, safe pedestrian crosswalk at College Avenue and Glenn Street in August when school re-turns; it will be similar to the crossing at Benton and Mendocino.

If you are considering drivers ed for your student this summer, check in with the Distance Learning Company, www.onlinedriversed.com/santa-rosa and check out their site. The cost of the class is $29.50 and Santa Rosa High School will receive 25% for each class completion.

Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank the parent volunteers who will be graduating with their seniors in May, without each one of you, none of what we do could have happened. Nancy Viega, mother of Peter Win-ters, has chaired Prom, Membership, and Senior Awards for years, going back to her daughter Sophia’s days. De-nise Parsons and Tina Alves, Senior Breakfast, mothers of Drew Parsons and Ted Barton. Patty Collis, chair of Project Grad, mother of Brian Collis. Cynthia Leung, who may be missed more than anyone, chair of Hospitality and mother of Malia James. Teresa Woodward, chair of Orientation and mother of Jackson Woodward. You are all inspiring and special people and will be missed. Having said that, please know that you are always welcome to come lend a hand. And thank you to my daughter Buddy Burch, who has shared her parents over the past four years without a single complaint.

Enjoy the warmth of the sun, have a great summer!

A Night On the Town Project Grad 2012 NEEDS YOUR HELP! Preparations are already underway for Project Graduation 2012, to be held on May 25, 2012. There are so many ways you can help with this annual alcohol- and drug-free graduation party. This year we have a new method for you to sign up to volunteer for Project Grad. Just go to www.signupgenius.com; click on the tab, Find a Sign Up; type in this email address: [email protected], then choose which sign-up you want: Project Grad Set-Up, Project Grad Night of Party, and/or Project Grad Clean-Up. Sign up early for the most choices! Or, you can go the old-fashioned route and email us your inter-est at [email protected] or fill out the form below. The continued success of SRHS Project Grad depends on the participation of all SRHS families. Food, Glorious Food! The Project Grad Food Committee requests your support! We are working hard planning a great menu to keep our hungry graduates fed for the entire night, coordinating our food acquisition carefully, and stretching our budget as far as possible. Your support in the form of cash or gift cards for local stores would be greatly appreci-ated! We are also interested in recommendations for restaurants or stores that might be interested in supporting Project Grad and businesses that may want to do sponsorships. Please contact Tracy Gonzales at [email protected] or 542-7007 with your donations or suggestions. Thank you!

Reserving Early Pays Off! The earlier you reserve your Project Grad spot, the more chances you will have of winning a Grand Prize! Post-ers around the school will let you know the Early Bird Bonus Ticket schedule—look for those in mid-March! Reserve before the end of March for the biggest bonus possible!

Reservation Form Tips Please note that both the parent/guardian and the student must sign the reservation form, regardless of the

student's age at the time of Project Grad. Please do not staple your check to the form, use a paper clip. Please remember to write your student's name on the memo line of the check, and your check number on the

space indicated on the form. Please make checks payable to SRHS Project Grad. Please print clearly on the form, especially if you would like an email confirmation of your student's reserva-

tion. Drop off the completed form and payment in the Project Grad box in the school's Main Office. DO NOT LET money be a factor in your decision to attend Project Grad! Scholarship forms are available

from Ms. Baldenegro.

Prize Donations Needed! The prize committee is looking for donations to help supplement prizes this year. Here is an easy way to support Project Grad. The Prize Committee needs hundreds of donations for quality prizes awarded throughout the night for our graduating seniors! We strive to have as many seniors win as possible. Public Schools Week May 4-11 Ron Calloway and Jeff Reed, Co-Chairs 544-1075 or [email protected] It is with excitement and pride that we announce the return of “Public Schools Week,” which will be held at the Coddingtown Mall May 4-11, 2012. Our theme, “Education in Action,” reflects the active learning of our stu-dents, and our community commitment to the children of Sonoma County.

From 1981-1992, public school students, teachers, classified employees, administrators, and parents came to-gether to celebrate the amazing achievements of students and the wonderful contributions of public schools in Sonoma County. The purpose of the celebration was to promote to the larger community the great work being done in our public schools and to create greater awareness of the need to support public education. The week-long celebration, held at Coddingtown Mall, was a showcase and visual display for student work, student per-formances, and teacher creativity. Virtually every public school in the county participated in a spirit of collabo-ration and unity. The Public Schools Week Celebration was a huge success and continued as an annual event for a decade.

Our goal is to shine a spotlight on the talent and accomplishments of the amazing students and educational pro-grams available within Sonoma County. By showcasing the programs and opportunities provided by our public schools, we will heighten public awareness of the value of a quality education for all of the children in our com-munities. Schools from across the County will provide displays of student work, and live student performances will be presented throughout the week. This is our opportunity to drive the message that public education is paramount to a robust and healthy community.

We look forward to a wonderful event celebrating public schools, and hope that you can join us in this celebra-tory endeavor.

CSF Reminder Else Casey [email protected] Attention CSF Lifetime Members and Seniors that need just one more qualifying semester! We have two events that you may need to place on your calendars. First, if you need one more qualifying semester to wear the gold cord (you have three but need one more), then you will need to get your grades signed by your current teachers prior to May 15, but not earlier than May 9. I will need grades from all classes, not just those classes that are used to qualify. Forms for your grades may be obtained at D101 starting on May 1. Additionally, you will need to fill out your CSF application prior to the May 15 deadline. For those that are already qualified as Lifetime Members, you will receive your gold cord at Senior Award’s Night. If you miss the Award’s Night festivities, you may pick up your cord from D101 along with those that are qualifying late, during final exam week, after school or during break. If you have questions about this process, please feel free to email me.

Jan Sofie, ArtQuest Director [email protected] The Producers Brings Unequalled Springtime to SRHS!

“The Producers” at SRHS this spring struck a crazy chord and skewed every possible perspective! Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy was as outrageous as anticipated, with its in-your-face humor centering on a Broadway pro-ducer and his mild-mannered accountant’s scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history which instead becomes a smash hit! Students, faculty and parents from ArtQuest and SRHS “at-large” comprised the direc-tors, actors, singers, dancers, musicians, choreographers, managers and behind-the-scenes techs and workers, for a student-centric production. There are too many to list here but congratulations and thank you to all partici-pants for your tremendous effort and expertise, especially Vicki Carpenter, Stage Director; Kira Bombace, Musi-cal Director; and Nzinga Woods, faculty choreographer. If you didn’t get a program and you’d like a complete list of the fantastic cast, please contact Ms. Carpenter at [email protected]. Kudos!

The poster design winner was Sophia Van Dyke, and the eleven finalists were Adrianna Adams, Celine Cordineau, Katie Glazier, Taj Hittenberger, Abagail Leepin, Miles MacDiarmid, Nyssa Oru, Shannon O’Shaughnessy, Elena Righi, Chiara Sarter and Aysia Stieb (a collaboration), and Zach Thomas. Notecards can be purchased in the AQ Office in Room 21 in the Arts Complex or call 707-535-4842 or email [email protected].

Last Chance to Catch Both Music and Dance Performances This Year!

Tickets can be purchased at the door -- $6.00 general admission and $4.00 for seniors and students. For more details contact Instrumental Music Director Mark Wardlaw at [email protected]. The next weekend brings the ArtQuest Dance Company’s final performance on May 11 and May 12, at 7:30 p.m. also in the audito-rium. An eclectic mix of dance styles and genres will be featured, with the high level technical and conceptual skill of the company evident in works by both company members and guest choreographers. Tickets will be available at the door. For more information, contact Dance instructor, Nzinga Woods at [email protected]. Don’t miss these two amazing performance opportunities!

Field Shoot on Alcatraz for Photography Club

The Photography Club spent a day on Alcatraz in late April, capturing the unique views of this once notorious federal prison site. About 25 students attended and photographed a wide array of subjects, from empty jail cells to the beautiful landscape and natural residents of the island. They also accessed the audio tour to learn about the facility’s past. Look for photographs drawn from this day in upcoming exhibitions next year.

Debut “Full Circle Festival” Just Finished for AQ VFA and SRCSA

The K-8 Santa Rosa Charter School for the Arts (SRCSA) and AQ Visual Fine Arts “Full Circle Festival” has just concluded. The collaborative project involved students of all levels, creating multitudes of circle paintings using the circle as a way of connecting, inspiring, and drawing community. The festival was held on April 30 at SRCSA, with about 90 VFA students and over 300 SRCSA students. Participants created two large paintings, several smaller group works and also individual pieces. Guest artist, Heip Nguyen facilitated the project, using his in-depth expertise in large-scale public projects. The project was generously co-funded by Friends of AQ, SRCSA “SACO” (Staff and Community Organization), Schools Plus, and funding from both AQ and SRCSA. The results will be exhibited at both schools as well as an additional site to be announced. Deep thanks to all the parent volunteers from both SRCSA and AQ. Watch for exhibition details next fall!

Big Wins for Video Arts Students in Various Spring Venues The Video Arts students have been busy and very successful this Spring. Fiona Becker had two distinctions. First, her film Take My Hand was awarded a national 3rd place by the American Council of Foreign Language Teachers. Fiona’s other film, The Pulsera Project, a documentary on a student project to assist Nicaraguan young adult artists who were former street kids, earned a spot on the project’s website at www.pulseraproject.org and shown at Lark Theatre's 7th Annual Youth Film Festival (www.larktheatre.net). Amy West's film Aave was presented at the Harvard-Westlake Film Festival in Los Angeles where she was awarded a $2,500 scholarship to attend a summer workshop by the New York Film Academy. The American Sign Language DVD for Parents was commissioned through the Sonoma County Office of Education’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing program, and Moises Escorcia spearheaded the project. SRHS students also dominated the recent Associated Students Stu-dent Film Festival at Santa Rosa Junior College on April 6. AQ Video Arts students had five pieces accepted into the program that featured 15 films selected from local high school and college submissions. Only three of the featured pieces were invited to be screened at the upcoming Film Fest Petaluma set for May 5 at the Mystic Theatre, each by an AQ Video Arts student or group: Fiona Becker's documentary The Pulsera Project, Amy West and Jacob Bellochio's MUD, and Nick Nuebel, Ben Hugres, Evan Stackpole and Hunter Jacob's Ancient Alien Ice Road Trucker Axe Wars: Episode 1. The other two SRHS pieces shown were Maneesha Moua's To Watch Us Sing and Dance Is to Hear Our Hearts Speak and Fiona Becker, Jimmy Cong, Mason Weaver, and Moises Escorcia's 4th Annual Handcar Regatta. See www.FilmFestPetaluma.com.

Digital Arts Instructor Chosen for Art Institute of Calif., SF Show

Instructor Ralph Silva-Broussard was nominated and is exhibiting his work in the gallery at the Art Institute Of California, San Francisco, as part of the National Art and Media Teacher Appreciation exhibition. The show opened April 26 with a reception for the artists. Mr. Broussard has taught ArtQuest Digital Arts for over a dec-ade, introducing hundreds of students to the ever-evolving and innovative digital arts media. Congratulations to “Mr. B” on this achievement!

Artstart Presents to AQ Digital, Photography and VFA Students

Representatives Sara Gray and Mike Koftinow from the City of Santa Rosa’s “Artstart” visited AQ in April to encourage students to apply for summer jobs in the program. Scores of AQ students have worked for Artstart over the years as entry level “apprentices” and some have even gone on to higher level positions, including AQ alumni Chandra Woodworth, now the Artstart Artistic Director and Tara Matheny-Schuster, the city’s Director of Art in Public Places. Some of Artstart’s signature projects include the painted benches located throughout Santa Rosa, and the murals and tile mosaics along Prince Greenway on Santa Rosa Creek. Best of luck to AQ applicants on again securing work that they want to do this summer in a creative field!
