How God Uses Pain God will use pain in order to cre-
ate a love relationship with His
creation. This statement may chal-
lenge your theology. However,
consider that God allowed Jesus to
experience incredible pain in order
to create an opportunity to have a
relationship with His creation.
Consider how Jesus created a rela-
tionship with Paul. He blinded him
and used a crisis in his life in order
to bring him into a relationship
with him and use him for God's
purposes. Consider how God re-
cruited Jonah for the mission He
had for him.
This is not God's first choice for
His creation. Romans 2:4 reveals
that God's preference is to show
mercy and kindness: "Or do you
show contempt for the riches of
His kindness, tolerance and pa-
tience, not realizing that God's
kindness leads you toward repen-
tance?" The problem is there are
few people who respond to the
goodness of God. God loves peo-
ple more than He loves their com-
fort. He invests a great deal into
mankind. He desires relationship
with us and will go to great
lengths to create such a relation-
ship in order for us to receive the
rewards and inheritance He has
for us.
We have observed this process in
the scriptures and in working with
“Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its
trouble, It empties today of its strength.”

Happy Mother’s Day
Moms, without you, there would
be no us. Your love, your attention,
your guidance,
have made us who we are.
Without you, we would be lost,
wandering aimlessly,
without direction or purpose.
You showed us the way
to serve, to accomplish, to persevere.
Without you, there would be
an empty space.
We could never fill, no matter how
we tried. Instead, because of you,
we have joy, contentment,
satisfaction and peace.
Thank you, moms.
We have always loved you
and we always will.
Mother’s deserve recognition
and appreciation year round,
but especially on
Mother’s Day.
So on this day, we salute moms
and those filling in as mom -
for everything they do!
Proverbs 31:28
Her children arise up, and
call her blessed; her husband
also and he praiseth her.
Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Entertaining yourself doesn't have to mean
spending a lot of money. It doesn't even
have to include going out.
Get cheap novels: Instead of filling your
bookshelves with brand new books, con-
sider buying used. There are chain stores
that offer used books at half and even a
quarter of the cover price. Libraries often
have great sales as well. Better yet, borrow
books, movies and CDs for free at the li-
brary. Once there, you can also surf the
internet as well as read magazines and
newspapers.
Cut down on subscriptions: Pick one or
two magazines that you enjoy the most and
cancel the rest. Or check them out at the
Library, it’s FREE.
Share with friends: Go through old books
or movies that you have lying around and
propose a trade with one of your friends
for something that you haven't read or seen
yet.
Have a game night: Instead of going out,
invite friends and family over for board
games. Have everyone bring a snack.
Host a potluck: Invite people over for
dinner and have each person bring a
separate dish. It's fun and much cheaper
than going out.
Catch a matinee: Movies at 2PM are
the same as 7PM. Beat the crowd and
save money by catching the early show.
Also , check the theaters for special deal
days.
Go to a discount theater: Lots of cities
have theaters that show movies after
their initial release. Check out movies
on the big screen at big savings.
Don't buy popcorn: Tickets are expen-
sive enough. Don't pay for an overpriced
popcorn and Coke, too. Eat something
before you go and drink water if you get
thirsty.
Rent a movie: Bypass the high ticket
prices and expensive snacks altogether.
Head over to the video store and rent a
movie.
Support your Alma mater: High
school and college sporting events can
provide cheap entertainment.
Watch tomorrow's stars today: Many
large cities host minor league games that
cost a fraction of the big league price.
You have no idea how much pain is involved in bringing another person
into this world.
Check out the local art scene: Poetry
readings, art openings, high school plays,
and community theater programs can be
fun and inexpensive.
Watch for free events: Check the news-
paper and Internet for open houses, festi-
vals, library events and other community
gatherings in your area.
Members only: Museums and zoos often
have deals and special events for mem-
bers. Sign up to support the arts, furry
friends and your savings.
Explore the great outdoors: Pack a pic-
nic and go for a hike at a park or recrea-
tional area nearby. You can even pack a
tent and sleeping bag to stay for the
weekend.
Go for a swim: Enjoy some good clean
fun in the sun: head to the lake or beach.
Listen for free tickets: Newspapers and
radio stations often hold contests to give
away free movie and concert tickets.
Saving money on entertainment is great,
but be careful how you take care of the
bill. Plastic can be hazardous to your
bank account's health. – Next edition
we’ll discuss “Plastic Money”
people through years of ministry.
Have you noticed the three distinct
stages. First, we live based on con-
venience. Our obedience is largely
based on circum-
stances in our lives.
We choose to obey
based on the circum-
stances.
The second stage is
the crisis stage. God
allows a crisis to come into our
lives. We are motivated to obey
God in order to get out of the pain
of our situation. Many times God
allows us to stay in this condition in
order to demonstrate His love and
faithfulness during our pain. Gradu-
ally, we discover something knew
about God and often have a per-
sonal encounter with Him that
changes us. Our very nature is af-
fected by this God-encounter.
This begins to move us into a
third phase that is a relationship
that is motivated now by love and
devotion instead of pain. This is
where God desires us to be.
Another way of saying this
is, we are no longer seek-
ing His hand. We are seek-
ing Him. We want to know
God personally.
Obedience will not last when the
motivation is only the removal of
our pain. Obedience only lasts
when the motivation is loving de-
votion. Where are you in your
obedience and what is the primary
motivation? If it is love, why not
tell the Lord you love Him today
and want to know Him for who
He is and not for what He can do
for you.

"I form the light and
create darkness, I
bring prosperity and
create disaster; I, the
LORD, do all these
things" (Isaiah 45:7)

There’s no two ways about it: men don’t take very good care of themselves. Far too many of you don’t
ever see a doctor unless there’s something seriously wrong or your partner or
spouse makes the appointment for you. Men are half as likely to visit a doctor for
a check-up as women are, and there are over 7 million American men who haven’t
seen a doctor in over 10 years. And even when they do go to the doctor, they often
don’t feel comfortable talking about their health. So why don’t you take better
care of yourselves? Part of the reason is the way you were brought up? As little boys, you were taught
not to cry, not to complain, and not to show any signs of weakness. You ignored your aches and pains
and played through injuries. Example – football and basketball players. In your 20s, you thought you
were indestructible and going to see the doctor was a waste of time and money. While in your 30s, the
excuse became I’m too busy with my career and family to go, and by the time you’re in your 40s you
don’t go because you’re afraid of what you’ll find out or you don’t want to have a rectal exam (But,
who does?). Being tough may have some advantages. But it’s also killing you. Most life-threatening
illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, can be treated or cured if they’re caught early.
However, one recent study found that two-thirds of men wouldn’t even go to the doctor if they were
experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath two early warning signs of a heart attack. So here’s the
deal. If you can’t remember the last time you had a complete physical, pick up the phone and make an
appointment. (You wouldn’t let 2-10 years go between oil changes, would you?) If something hurting
or just doesn’t seem right, call. Even if you’re feeling great, call anyway. The time to see your doctor
isn’t when you’re hooked up to life support. It’s NOW, when you’re feeling healthy. Next month is
Men’s Health Month. Start now making your appointments and live longer. “Your family needs you!”
Excluding pregnancy-
related office visits,
women make twice as
many preventative
care visits as men.

Hands From Heaven Outreach Ministry
Have you noticed several new women in the
church? If you haven't been formally introduced,
they are women from the local shelter. Sis. Yolanda
Polk and Sis. Sandra Lee had a vision to feed the
homeless. And not just a vision but a desire to fulfill
the real work that needed to be done. They took their
vision to Pastor McGowens and this birthed the
Hands From Heaven Outreach Ministry. The minis-
try’s mission is to reach the souls of the disenfran-
chised, impart education to them through witnessing
the knowledge of Christ, to help others experience
God’s salvation and help them grow holistically.
The ministry work is done primarily on the outside.
Since the first of the year the church van has been
picking up the ladies from the Women & Family
Shelter on every Sunday and the 2nd Wednesday.
The first fellowship was held on February 10th. Sis.
Polk and Sis. Lee support these ladies by attending
their graduation from the shelter. Since the inception
of the ministry three ladies have giving their lives to
Christ and have also joined our church family. Others
in the shelter have joined other churches in the com-
munity. The ministry fellowships once a month on the
2nd Wednesday in the McKissick Bldg from 4-6pm.
Due to the sensitivity of the clients, volunteers must
meet strict criteria. Not only policies placed in effect
by the shelter, but also the need to posses the heart of
God, have a cheerful and positive attitude and a com-
passion for the homeless. Volunteers must be humble
spirits, team players, a person of integrity, warm and
have a willingness to serve others. If you would like
to volunteer or donate items to the shelter, please see
Sis. Yolanda Polk or Sis. Sandra Lee for details.
