Workouts”
Works with Montrose Christian
o Trained Kevin Durant
What you
want
as
a coach
during
the
season
needs
to
be
taught
and
emphasized
all
year
Can’t just flip the switch on once season comes around‐it’s an all year deal
Conditioned Response‐Pavlov’s dog
The days of sitting in a circle stretching before a practice or game are long gone
You need a 3‐4 minute warmup (ex. Tennis ball drills) followed by a 3‐4 minute dynamic
flexibility
Tennis Ball Drills
1)
Two teammates pass a tennis ball back and forth while moving the length of the court
Calling names the whole time
4 variations to drill:
o Catching only with inside hand (running)
o Catching only with outside hand (running)
o Throwing behind the back (running)
o Defensive slides catching and throwing only with the right and then the left

2)
One person has tennis ball in each hand while the defensive player is in a defensive stance
The person with the tennis balls drops one and the other tries to release from the stance and
catch the ball before it bounces twice
3) Have 1 player turned around, when he hears “ball” he must turn around and find the tennis ball
which was thrown before the player could see where it went
4) 1 player is lying down, other player rolls the ball one way or another and the other guy has to get up
and chase after it
5) Two ball drop
One player has a ball in each hand
Player with no tennis balls has a hand on top of the other guys’ hands
Player
with
tennis
balls
drops
1
and
the
other
has
to
react
and
catch
the
tennis
ball
before
it
hits
the ground
“Get back” Drill (right)
Coach signals which direction players should slide
When coach says “get back” players release
stance & turn and run
“Sprint and retreat” Drill
Players sprint
and
when
coach
yells
“retreat”
players retreat and then coach yells “break” to
sprint again

“Teams are physically at their weakest when they need to be
strongest” ‐Alan Stein
Everyone does off ‐season lifting, but in‐season lifting is also
necessary once or twice a week to keep the strength when you
need it down the stretch.
“The Car Wash” using heavy balls
Two coaches are in the middle of the key
One player at a time tries to score in the paint by getting through the two coaches (the car
wash)
Coaches don’t let them score…slap, foul, etc.
As a team, must score 7
Fullcourt Layup Tip Drill
Very good conditioner
Team has to try and keep both sides going without letting the ball
touch the ground

“1,2,3 Drill”
Have 4 players at 4 corners of the center circle in a stance
When coach calls 1 the players sprint to their corner and sprint back
When coach calls 2 the players sprint to their backboard and jump as high as possible and
backpedal back
When coach calls 3 the players defensive slide to the sideline and run back
Comments:
Get guys to compete using rewards instead of punishments
Dribbling with
heavy
balls
is
great
upper

conditioner
o Creates good finishers

Sherri Coale, Oklahoma|”Little Things that Matter”
Everything starts with practice planning
o Single most important thing to make team better
o Each day:
Thought for the day (maybe an email)
Emphasis for offense and defense
Pre‐practice ritual (same order of events)
• Most ritualistic people in the world: neurosurgeons!
“Most important thing you’re doing is whatever you were doing while you were doing it”
o It’s not what you are doing, it’s how you are doing it
Non‐stop communication
o Echo concept
Have players echo the name of the drill
o Clapping school
If you’re going to clap, do it right
Players need clapping school sometimes
o Tell 1 player the next drill and have them transition into it by communicating with their
team
o Catch the kid who doesn’t talk
Once you catch them, they will communicate a lot more
If they don’t talk during practice they won’t when it counts either
When watching
basketball:
o Plug into one or two things (an offensive and/or defensive concept)
o You will be surprised at how much more you learn by watching for specifics
o Don’t be the person who watches without even realizing they are watching

Post Players: GET YOUR NUMBERS TO THE BALL!
Offensive Concept: Center the ball
o Get the ball to the middle 1/3 of the floor every 2 or 3 seconds
Walk the arc
o o Instead of v‐cutting
Fake a pass to make a pass
o 1 fake, don’t get carried away
o If it didn’t work the first time it won’t work!
Catch the ones doing right more than wrong
o Find the unbelievables!
o When you reward the ones doing right, the ones doing wrong will immediately change
their actions

Warmup:
Mini‐3 man weave (staying in the lane)
o Up and back
Medium‐3 man weave (just outside of the key)
o Up and back
Regular 3 man weave (staying wide)
o Up and back
• Pass & Catch on the move‐very important
o Must be engrained in practice
o Never stop after halfcourt; break out the other way on a make or miss
• Long rebounds are critical for effective break
• 5 man game‐rebounding
• Eliminate suicides (running just to run)
o Replace with 5 man weave (below)
o Middle person stays the same for the whole drill; wings switch sides going back

• Be willing to advance ball by pass or dribble
• Weakest link of a fastbreak team is their transition defense
• You always press a pressing team; you always fastbreak a fastbreaking team
• Never allow disappointment lags on offense or defense
• Shooting Drill:
o Practicing clearing a pick with a minimum of 2 dribbles for better angles
o 4 spots, attacking the middle of the floor coming off of a screen

• Zone overload drill
o o Attack middle
o Opposite wing finds open window
o Next, would do the same thing with the opposite wing (3) attacking the middle
• Zone set
o If the 1 can’t get the ball into the post, they will reverse the ball back to the top of the
key and
the
3 will
attack
the
overload
area
like
in
the
zone
overload
drill
o Don’t have wing overload from the naked side (ex. 3 will overload instead of 4)
o Post keeps defense low vs zone

Keeps overload space larger
o Look for holes, look for gaps
o When you leave the overload area, go down and out the opposite way instead of just a
straight line
• The 4 top spots in the zone offense are interchangeable
• 2 guard front vs 1 man front defense (1‐2‐2, 1‐3‐1, etc.)
• 1 guard front vs 2 man front defense (2‐3)
• Use cuts as screens verse the zone
o Make defense follow you
o Cut behind
defense
‐not
in
front
o Don’t cut just to cut‐purpose
• Drive Drill: w/ defense
o o Backdoor or dribble handoff ‐read defense
o If dribble handoff: PG sets screen instead of just flipping the ball

• Responsibility + Accountability= Success
• “You get what you tolerate.”
o As a coach if you let a bad pass or turnover go unnoticed and uncorrected during
practice how can you be surprised when your team loses the ball in a game?
• Players think offensively by nature
o As a coach, first few practices of season need to be primarily defense since that is what
is unnatural
o When a guy wants the key to the gym, he wants to shoot not do defensive slides
• 2 man inbounds ball vs press
o Posts are not usually good passers so why would you have them inbound?
• Ballhandling warmup
o Change direction, change speed
o Crossover, through the legs, behind the back, and spin

Billy Gillespie, Kentucky|Our Defensive Philosophy
• Gillespie had largest turnarounds in college basketball
o No one is stupid enough to take a team that needs that much fixing
• 50% of practice needs to be dedicated to defense
• Get hands active on closeouts
• Shell Drill (4 v. 4)
o Learn how to compete
o Starts in the backcourt to make more realistic
o Have guard to guard X‐Cut and Wings Cross

Don’t lose vision of ball‐ stay on midline

o When coach yells “drive” watch for help jumping to ball
o Don’t let cutter cross your face
• Add 5th player to shell drill (post player)
o When ball goes into post, help defense needs to be able to deflect it if big puts on
the ground
o Run 5 offense vs. 4 defense
• 5 guys talking
o Not natural, takes practice
o You can clap, you can talk, or you can run!
• Try to

o Cuts down size of target for screener
• Defensive transition:
o Assign get back guys and rebounders
o Make sure they know their role
• 4 man fullcourt shell
o Starts by
4 guys
running
offense
‐breakdown
drill
o Once shot goes up, the 4 players just on offense need to run back and get on
defense
o 4 players who were off the court take the rebound and are now on offense going
against the other 4 in a live shell drill
