Parish Stewardship

ST. AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT - MAY 20 PENTECOST SUNDAY

Today we celebrate Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was given to the Apostles. Many people consider this the birth of the Church, since the gift of the Holy Spirit caused the apostles to preach the Gospel to the people for the first time. There are a couple of options for the second reading, but one of them from 1 Corinthians has in it, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” This reading has immense relevance to stewardship and service. Each of us has been blessed abundantly in many different ways, and none of us is the same as anyone else. Therefore, the way that we return these gifts back to the giver, God, will be different. Some may be blessed with wealth and can afford to generously fund the parish, the diocese, and other charitable works. Some have gifts of working with the sick and/or dying. Some can write, some can serve, some can comfort those in need or who are suffering. But no one can say that they have somehow been completely left out of God’s divine providence. We can pray for wealth, health, talent, and innumerable other gifts. God will answer these prayers according to his plan for us. However, as we celebrate this Pentecost, one prayer that will never be denied is if we ask God to bless us with his Holy Spirit to guide us in his will and way and then to give us the strength and courage to follow his will (see Matthew 7:11). Having said this, I believe that many people think that when they pray for the Spirit, it is like God puts them on autopilot, and they do not have to expend any energy, physically, mentally, or spiritually, to do God’s will. I do not believe that this is the way it works. The gift of the Holy Spirit is an offer, an aid. We must accept the offer and use the help to work hard, making difficult decisions and sacrifices to let the Spirit transform our lives into the will of the Father. The question is, “Are we willing to take God up on this promise and go where he leads us?”. Paul A. Gulig Chair, Service Committee and Parish Council
