PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018

Page 2 HolyRosaryNorthMankato.com | LoyolaCatholicSchool.org

From the side of the “Almighty”, Happy Pentecost Sunday as we celebrate the gathering of the apostles, the Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit descending upon all of them with the seven-fold-gifts, including, “Wisdom”! From the side of “academics”, Happy Baccalaureate Sunday, as we honor the 30 seniors of Holy Rosary parish that have gathered like the apostles, now, filled with both earthly and heavenly wisdom as they descend in the fall to colleges and universities, to the military, trade schools, or maybe even the work force. In all of these places they will “begin” again to grow in wisdom, age and grace in the years ahead.

Pentecost is often seen as the birthday of the Universal Church. For Pentecost is the completion of experiencing the fullness of the Holy Trinity (which we will celebrate as a feast next Sunday) of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All three Persons of the Holy Trinity not only will lead the first followers of Jesus of Nazareth, but this feast acknowledges in a profound way, the guidance and leadership of the Holy Spirit, manifested through wind and fire.

As you and I are again receiving invitations of graduates who are family, friends, or fellow parishioners; a graduation ceremony or a graduation party, has the makings of a birthday celebration in the spirit of “endings” and “beginnings”. In some respects, a graduation also has a kind of Pentecost quality to it as well. For just as a birthday honors a certain person with the recognition of a number of years, cake, gifts, and looking forward to future birthdays; so too graduation recognizes 18 years of school, graduation-sheet-cake and the expectation of gifts (usually cash) for the guest of honor along with the proverbial question: “What are you doing after you graduate?”

Yet, imagine having a birthday for yourself or someone you love and among the invited guests was the family doctor. Imagine having a wonderful time at the party with lots of cake, ice-cream, gifts and just all out fun. Imagine, at the close of the evening in that garage where the festivities were held, say, this family doctor stood up and said: “I would like to propose a toast.” “Here! Here!” everyone in the crowded garage cheered. The doctor continued: “I would like to propose a toast to our guest of honor on his/her birthday. This is such a special day for anyone at any year of life, but especially tonight. For I have

medical evidence that our guest of honor will not be with us a year from now!” Wow! Talk about a party crasher… or wrecker! No doubt, there would be a lot of angry and upset people including the guest of honor, who did not want his/her medical history made public much less make public their impending death.

The Feast of Pentecost is the crowning spiritual cherry on the proverbial sundae of these past Sundays that we have been celebrating beginning with the Lenten season through the Easter season and even the Ascension of the Lord. For just as most of us normally would not celebrate a birthday, a wedding anniversary or even an ordination anniversary without the faith and hope that there will be another one next year; so too people of Pentecost, and pupils that have completed 18 years of school, the Feast of Pentecost celebrates the “beginning”; the birth and birthday of the Church in her beginnings. FOR TO CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF PENTECOST IS TO CELEBRATE THE FAITH OF THE CHURCH AND HER BEGINNINGS, FAR OFF INTO THE DISTANT FUTURE.

Graduation, by its very nature is not an “ending” so much as it is a “completion” of a course of studies. In the case of our Class of Seniors of 2018, most (if not all) have “completed” their course work and will now “begin” another course work for two or four or perhaps even eight more years. So, as it is in the physical realm, so too, in the case of the spiritual realm. For Pentecost was not so much an “ending” or a completion of the Lord’s earthly time on the earth, as it was the beginning of the Church, a continuation of what Christ had begun in His previous 3 year ministry.

It is estimated that in 1900, around 50% of Roman Catholics were attending Mass on the weekend in the United States. The reason the numbers were not higher was because transportation was still by horse, there was a shortage of priests (hence the Irish priests that came to our land) and the Church did not have established parishes in every community and village. By the 1950’s (around the time of Holy Rosary building the addition to the school as well as our present church), it was believed that nearly 70% of all Roman Catholics were coming to church each week. So, that would explain the big building boom in the Church along with all of those “baby boomers”. Today, statistics range from 20% to 33% attendance. For there are 45 million Catholics in this country and it is estimated that 17 million are not practicing. There are of course many reasons, but the main reason experts claim is that “LIFE DID NOT TURN OUT THE WAY THEY HAD HOPED IT WOULD”. In other words, they saw their life filled with more “endings” than they did “beginnings”.

The Good News of the Gospels is that nothing ends badly when the Blessed Lord is in our life: even when it comes to sadness, sickness, shortage of money or even sin. Graduates and the good people of Holy Rosary, my spiritual advice is this:

(continued on page 3)

“As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” - St. John

of May and the months of summer, we are still able to continue to make budget through the generosity of you who are such good stewards. Thank you for your gifts. Please note that good stewardship does not take the summer off. If you are going to be gone in the coming weeks due to summer travel, could I encourage you to call the parish office “in the name of good stewardship” and sign-up for on-line giving? It is quick, easy and your stewardship presence is still there even if you are not. As always, thank you so much for your gifts.

“God is not a God of endings and beginnings from nature to the supernatural life. If you remain close to the Savior and the sacraments throughout your life, no matter what tragic “endings” come your way, even death itself, Christ will turn even that “ending” around to a new “beginning”, which is what we celebrate each Sunday, namely through the Resurrection of the Redeemer and everlasting life.” God love you all!

Lord, Hear Our Prayers Worship Committee Meeting Minutes

Holy Rosary Catholic Church

April 23rd, 2018

The Holy Rosary Worship Committee was called to order on Monday, April 23rd, 2018 in Conference room One. The majority of the members were in attendance for the meeting. The meeting began with prayer that was led by Father. The past minutes of the January meeting were reviewed and approved as published in the bulletin. The agenda was approved as read.

Pastor’s Comments: Father began his comments by stating that the parish just came off of a wonderful First Holy Communion celebration of a sizable class of some 22 children. Father gave credit to Cathy and the catechists of the second graders who had worked hard with the children in preparing their post-communion reflection of “The Beautiful Hands of a Priest”. The children were very reverent and well-dressed at Mass. The parish is making liturgical progress with our young people. There were certainly many favorable comments after the Mass including visitors who commented on how beautiful our sanctuary was decorated (even though our flowers have largely passed their prime). The flower department has been helped out by two more recent funerals. Confirmation also went well with Bishop LeVoir in March.

Easter went smoothly even though Holy Week was in competition with “spring break” this year and many of the parishioners left for the week and covering servers and other ministries was a bit of a challenge, but it was all covered. Holy Thursday attendance seemed slightly up as well as for the Easter Vigil. Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter morning seemed slightly down, but all in all very good attendance for the large number of regular parishioners that were away during that week. The Easter stewardship is about the same as a year ago.

Father expressed a word of thanks again to the Worship Committee for all of their help both during the Lenten season as well as the Easter season. We made short work of decorating and it went smoothly.

Father concluded that tonight’s meeting is a “mopping up” before the close of the school year and the start of the summer months. Father had anticipated a lighter agenda but there is still a good number of items to go through before we return to meet in September. (Doesn’t that sound like a long-time away.)

Father is hoping to tackle some repair and clean-up projects again this summer as the parish has now completed all of its outside stewardship commitments to the Diocese and the Catholic School, and will now work on rebuilding our parish monies for this fiscal year of 2017-2018 through the remaining days of April and the months of May and June.

PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018

HolyRosaryNorthMankato.com | LoyolaCatholicSchool.org Page 7

Old Business: Baptismal Crucifixes: C.C.W. had been donating crucifixes to be given out at the time of baptism. For several reasons this practice will be discontinued due to the rising costs of the sacramentals along with other issues. Penance Services: There had been no Penance Service at Holy Rosary this past Lent due to the unavailability of the priests. Father had heard a fairly large number of individual confessions and also saw a good number of parishioners from Holy Rosary where he had helped out at the other Penance Services. The Worship Committee suggested that Father and the staff try to recruit early, such as September for the December service. Father stated that they will try this, although the dilemma can become that priests do not wish to commit that early or call at a later time saying that they have had another commitment. Calling priests will be put on the calendar in September for the December service and see how it goes. Ushers and E.M.E.’s: There is a continuing need for ushers and Eucharistic minsters. The summer months become more challenging as people are travelling. Father and Lorraine will begin in earnest to recruit and train a new class of ushers (both men and women) following the Anointing Masses this spring. “Stepping Up in Faith”- New Steps/ Railings and Lighting: Father reviewed the stewardship increases and progress of the front entrance project behind the scenes. There has been an increase in revenue since the last Worship Committee meeting 3 months ago by $25,387.46, with monies for this designated fund exceeding by $42,000.00. The architectural firm has been working on researching the actual cost of the front entrance. A final figure has not been released by the firm but it is running to or beyond $100,000.00. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available. Review of Easter Environment: The Easter environment was discussed for Easter. The Worship Committee members expressed satisfaction on the new swags that were done for the pillars. It was suggested to maybe have them made a bit larger for next year along with more greens and possibly more flowers. All in all, the church looked really good. Some very positive comments came from the pews and also from visitors attending the Masses. Father thanked all who came to help during those very busy days of Holy Week. New Business: Altar Update: As was discussed in the January meeting, a new altar top was placed on the present altar. The stone was donated by Vetter Stone, but the cost of the installation was covered by the parish at a price of $1,600.00. The stone took two days to install and weighs 800 pounds. A new altar cloth will need to be purchased. The Worship Committee requested that the altar cloth would be the same as the previous cloth to match the high altar. Father will look into this project. Both the Worship Committee and Father reported that the new stone top blended in well and was not even noticed by a good number of the faithful. Father worked the new stone into the homily for Holy Thursday. The added room on the altar is most helpful and the altar now looks more in proportion to the space of the sanctuary. This was a wonderful addition to our worship space and our

weekend worship. Father will send a thank you letter to the Vetter family. Lent Environment: The Lent environment was reviewed. It was decided to return the rugged cross back to where it had been received as it has not been used in recent years in the sanctuary. The present bare cross that is presently in the sanctuary, will be used in the future and fits in well with the statue of St. Francis. Pictorial Directory: The new Parish Directory is an important tool for the parish, for the Worship Committee, etc. We are slowly approaching the 50% mark. Letters have gone out to all those that have not had a photo sitting or submitted a photo. The letter only contained information about the new Parish Directory and asked for a generous response for the project. If the folks who have been written to do not respond, there will be a follow-up telephone call in a final attempt to support the directory. After this has been completed, the Parish Directory will go to press. Father is anticipating that the directory will come out later in 2018. Anointing Masses: There are 3 Masses that will be celebrated for Communal Anointing this spring. Statue of the Sacred Heart: The statue of the Sacred Heart will be displayed again in the month of June which is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and also in July which is the month dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus. Father has been moving the large statue to the front of church but the statue is very heavy and also the risk of breakage is great. Father purchased a much smaller, used statue for the parish that will be used along with St. Francis (looking on) that is only 36” tall. Sacristy Cleaning: Father indicated that last summer’s work of cleaning up all of the various closets and storage areas, needs a little “touch up” this summer before things get out of hand. It was also suggested by Father to address the cupboards in the sacristy that have so many items that have not been used in many years. Some things could be thrown, given away or possibly given to the missions. Several members volunteered to work beginning on June 26th, following morning Mass, with a complimentary lunch provided by the parish for the volunteers. Altar Server Cassock and Albs: There is a need to have these garments cleaned. Lorraine and Cathy will oversee this task as this has not been done for more than a year. Sanctuary Repairs: Father reviewed with the Worship Committee about some possible repairs in and around the church this summer. The Worship Committee felt strongly that work needs to be done to the exterior lighting for the sake of security and safety. Perhaps sensor lights could be installed that would go on at night automatically and go off at dawn. Father will address this with the Finance Council in the near future. The sanctuary floor was also discussed due to the many people that have fallen. No bids or contractors have been secured at this time. Questions were raised as to what had happened to the wall-mounted fans that use to be in the Church’s social hall? This will be looked into. Future Business: The next Worship Committee meeting will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018, in Conference Room 1#. The meeting concluded with prayer.
