TAKIN’ IT TRACKSIDEBy Toby Batchelder

Tonight is Little League Night. The North East Mini Stock Tour will run 50 green flag laps and according to series promoter Bob Guptill, they are expecting anywhere between 27-35 cars to try and qualify for the $ 500 to win event. If you have never seen a NEMST show, they turn Super Street lap times and the action is fantas-tic.

We also have our Spectator Drags as part of the evening’s event card. Robbie Lacroix has domi-nated these events in the past, and we shall see if anyone has anything for him this year. The R.E. Hinkley Super Streets, Pepsi Limited Sportsman, and T-Bird Mini Mart Wildcats are all in action as well .

Last week we saw a driver record his first racing career win, and we saw one carry the checkers for the 3 millionth time. Okay that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but Dwight Jarvis doing a victory lap makes the chaotic world around us disappear for a bit.

Track managment would like to thank all the fans who attended the On-Track Fan Apprecia-tion Party last week as well as the race teams who participated. It was a great event with lots of smiling faces on the youngsters.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Super Streeter Craig Smith’s (23) father Dean on Monday. Dean was a former competitor at the speedway and was a fixture in his son’s pit stall at each event. Our thoughts and prayers are with Craig and the entire Smith family as well as the Fellows family during these times.

Next week on May 26, the R.E. Hinkley Super Streets will be running the Dean Smith 52-Lap Memorial Race with an increased purse and var-ious lap incentives. Look for more details next week.

SUPER STREETSIn a division with Marvel Comic super hero references, it is only fitting the “Green Goblin” piloted by Mark McClay came home victori-ous.

McClay started on the pole and lead all 40 laps en route to his first victory of the season. With his new car down motorless after the first event of the season, McClay dragged out last year’s model, and it did not miss a beat.

Ben Poland finished second while “Radical” Ricky Bly picked up his second podium finish of the year by placing 3rd. “Radical” Russ Davis enjoyed a great run for his first time out coming home 4th while Claremont’s Dylan Bodreau continued a strong early start to his season placing 5th.

A McClay brothers’ front row paced the field to green only to have the first of five cautions fly on Lap 3 as Jack McClay and“Superman” Aaron Fellows came together in Turn 3 with McClay being sent to the back of the lineup.

Mark McClay was able to hold off challenges by Poland on several restarts during the first half of the event as Bly patiently waited and was able to get by Davis on Lap 34 to solidy

the top 3.

Hayden Scott, winner of the Mike Richardson Memorial Race in week 1, came home 6th after starting 17th on the grid. Rookie Craig Smith wheeled another strong run by finishing 7th. “Judge” Joe Brown locked down 8th while Newport’s Craig Smith finished 9th. Jack McClay overcame the early incident to finish 10th.

The R.E. Hinkley Super Streets have a regu-lar 40-lap event tonight with next week being the Dean Smith 52-Lap Memorial Race in memory of former racer and father of Craig Smith (23) who passed away this past Mon-day.

Mark McClay visits KIXX Victory Lane with the “Green Goblin” and records the feature win by leading all 40 circuits.

Dwight Jarvis collects the feature win in “Black Beauty.” Jarvis led all 30 laps.

Dwight Jarvis has recorded hundreds of wins during a storied 45-year racing career. The 13-time Claremont Speedway Modified Champion added one more to his resume by leading all 30 laps in the Casella Modified feature to pick up the victory.

Jarvis fired from the pole with Jeff Murray on his outside and TJ Bleau on his back bumper. Bleau was able to get by Murray on Lap 1 and ran in 2nd until an incident on Lap 15 ended his evening.

Race 1 winner Dana Smith started 10th and was able to join the party on Lap 17 by pulling into 2nd but settled for the runner-up spot as Jarvis and “Black Beauty” held off all challeng-es.

Murray finished 3rd in his first time out in the season. Nick Salva placed 4th with Chris Bolton finishing 5th.

The Casella Modifieds are back in action on May 26.

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT• The season hasn’t started out well for Sam

Rameau as he suffered motor trouble and was unable to compete at all during the night.

• Cameron Sontag raced for the 1st time with the Casella Modifieds. Sontag competes in the Sportsman Modified Division at Monad-nock as well. Sontag was a former competi-tor on the NEMST.

• An incident on Lap 16 claimed Bleau, Bucker Demers, and Dylan Rock will all retiring for the evening.

• Smith enjoyed the largest position gain with a + 8. He is also the current point leader as he leads Nick Salva by 17 after two races.

• Jeff Murray was very happy with his 3rd place finish for his first time out. Murray’s season started a little rough while at the pre-vious Wednesday practice, Murray’s winch broke in his trailer as well as the handle on his pit box. The winch was still not fixed on Friday so pushing your car inside the trailer after a 3rd is far more satisfying.

T.J. Bleau (15) tucks his nose inside Brandee Tree (84) in Turn 4. Bleau was involved in an incident on Lap 15 during the feature and retired for the night. Tree finished 7th.

LIMITED SPORTMANWe are not sure if the Polish Prince spends most of his days on the playground in Jacksonville, VT, or if he has ever been to Bel Air but Tyler Janovsky’s kingdom may very well be Claremont Speedway.

Janovsky led every single lap of the evening in the Pepsi Limited Sportsman division by record-ing both the heat and feature event victories.

A caution on Lap 19 brought the field back togeth-er after Janovsky had put some distance between himself and Scott Vien, but he was able to hold off the Villian as well as Joe Tetreault for his first win of the young season.

Vien and Tetreault finished 2nd and 3rd but failed post-race technical inspection awarding those places to Josh Ruel and Cote Swenson. Chris Colburn ended up 4th while Kenny Thompson was awarded 5th.

HEAT RACE WINNERSMillette, Squires Jr.

You always remember your firsts. For Dale Squires Jr, he earned it by fighting off Zach Lyn early in the event and Greg Millette at the end to win his first career race in the T-Bird Mini Mart Wildcat divison.

Squires Jr. started on the point but Lyn was able to lead the first 5 circuits. The two exchanged the lead a couple of times until Lap 13 when Squires Jr. was able to stay out in front for the remainder of the event.

Greg Millette started dead last on the field and came home 2nd. Lyn finished 3rd. Nick Little was consistent yet again as he placed 4th. Jim Carley rounded out the top 5.

There was some excitement late as a caution on Lap 19 brought the field back together but Squires Jr. was able to hold off Millette for the remaining 7 laps to record the victory.

The Wildcats will run this week in addition to the North East Mini Stock Tour.

Dale Squires Jr. picked up his first career victory in the T-Bird Mini Mart Wildcat feature.

LOOKING BACK ON LEGENDS

Claremont Speedway lost two close friends this past week - Edward Pelletier, co-owner of the 11 Modifiied which won 3 championships in a row with Punky Caron from 1986-88 and Dean Smith, former racer and father of current Super Streeter Craig Smith (23). May you both have Victory Lane celebrations in Heaven as you will be missed.
