Family Life Program

Included in this newsletter is a flyer publishing the Family Life Program that we are planning to conduct here at school. Family Life Victoria conduct sexuality education programs in schools and have done so for many years. We are planning two sessions in collaboration with St Patrick’s School, here in our multi-purpose room. There is a session for Year 3 and 4 at 5.45-6.45pm and Year 5 & 6 from 7.00-8.00pm. These sessions would be attended by a parent and the child.

One Million Stars

We have been invited to participate in a Social Justice initiative called One Million Stars to End Violence. Stars are weaved by groups all around Australia to raise an awareness and promote a local and global community whereby violence is not present or tolerated. I will send home a separate letter early next week outlining how we will go about making our contribution to one million stars. The completed stars will be used in an installation at the 2017 Commonwealth Games.

Introducing Leroy…….. Leroy has an older brother Eli who is 8 and an older sister Evie who is 9 and turning 10 this year already at St John Vianney.

Leroy was a bit nervous starting school because there were people here he had never met. He feels good now because He knows everybody. He know all the Grade 6 kids and his favourite is Oscar who is his buddy. Oscar goes to Chess Club with Leroy sometimes.

Leroy loves playing outside and loves going to Sport. He thinks Mrs Heath is a great Sport teacher because she gives good gold stickers.

Red is Leroys favourite colour.

Leroys favourite food that Mum makes is Fried Rice, dad doesn’t do any cooking at his house but he does kick the footy with Leroy.

Leroy barracks for the Demons. Leroy goes to the footy with his dad and Grandpa, Mum likes to stay home and watch it on the TV. Leroy likes collecting Football cards, he was very pleased to find his lost ones in my office this morning.

Leadership at St. Louis

On Thursday 11th May 2017, the year six class visited St. Louis for a Leadership Program; this was the fourth time we had been to St Louis for this program. At the beginning of the day, the first activity was The Crocodile Infested Water Game, we had to try and get across to the other side of the room, without touching the ground. To play this game we only had two sheets of paper to get across. After a while, we worked it out, it was very funny to watch. We did this activity to be able to work more cooperatively in a group. The next game was a Trading Game. We had to cooperate as a team to create five different objects. We started off with a pack, this pack had things like, paper and some tools like rulers and scissors. We then had to create the objects, but some of us couldn't because not everyone had the correct supplies, so we had to trade fairly with other teams, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to finish creating the objects. This taught us how to play fair when trading, and how you need to communicate with your team and the other teams to get what you needed to create something awesome. The next activity was called Triumphs and Challenges. We then broke up into our leadership groups and discussed our Triumphs and challenges. I liked this activity because, we were able to have extra to think more about our leadership groups, and how we can find our way around our challenges. After these activities, we had lunch and play outside. We came back in and did another activity called Conversations. One person of the two, was secretly assigned that in the first conversation they were to be very enthusiastic and excited about the conversation. In the second conversation they were to act not interested and not really participate in the conversation. Then after the two conversations we asked them if there was a difference in the two talks. To sum this work up we learnt what we need to make our conversations captivating and engaging. This was interesting because we learnt new things that we should do to make a good conversation. You need to make eye contact with the person, show good body language, include yourself and other things like, not zoning out and showing respect. Later on, we did an activity called LEGO Building at School. For this activity we needed at least five people. The aim of the game was to complete the hidden lego building but there was a catch. The only person who could see the lego building was the Principal! There were four positions, the first position was the Principal. The Principal’s job was that they were the only person that was allowed to see the lego creation, and the only person that they could tell was the Vice Principal, the Vice Principal had to communicate between the teachers and the Principal, the Principal would tell the Vice Principal what went on top of what. The next role was the teacher, and the teacher's role was to try and create the lego building without being able to see it, and the only communication between how to create it was through the Vice Principal who could only answer to yes or no questions. And the last person was the secretary, who just took notes. I loved this activity because it was really fun to watch as the secretary, it just shows all the work that that goes into creating something awesome! Finally, we concluded the day, and enjoyed a calm and nice activity called Give Ribbons. About eight different coloured ribbons were assigned a value. This was to show each other how we were affecting their experience in their leadership groups. For example a red ribbon was for a confident person and a person who makes good decisions, the purple ribbon was a person who respects and listens to others. Then a member of our team gave us a ribbon. They tied it around our hands and told us why we were that ribbon. This was very nice, getting told that we were something like a good, kind and responsible person. This was a great way to end the day. The day at St Louis was awesome. We had a fantastic time. I thought I learnt a lot about how to co-operate and listen to each other. My favourite activity was definitely the LEGO activity because it was fun having to communicate through each other. Today was awesome because we all started to finally cooperate with each other! This has helped me grow to be a better leader. It was super fun and a great learning experience.
