The Montana Bar,
as always, had the
Norwegian ag
a-ying on May
17th. After all, it
was Norwegian
Constitution Day —
the National Day of
Norway — and is
an ofcial national
holiday observed on
May 17 each year.
Among Norwegians,
the day is referred
to simply as
syttende mai (lit.
“seventeenth May”),
Nasjonaldagen
(The National Day)
or Grunnlovsdagen
(The Constitution
Day). Celebratingthe moment were
Lance Monson,
Mike Molvig and
Paul Monson while
there were several
more Norwegians
inside the Montana
having a Tuesday
afternoon toast to
syttende mai.

Anglers o the Year) were in a bit o a pickle. Shouldthey head back or weigh-ins and get back in plenty otime or push the limits and hit once last spot? Goodthing Robert had his say, because it paid off in a BIG way.Popping a 10 lb + hog in the closing minutes proved tobe the difference maker. On most years their 28.2 lbbasket would probably have been enough to walk awaywith the top prize but not this year.
Randy Franco and Nicholas Fortier o Billings hadtheir own plans. Building off last year’s third placefinish; this rapidly rising squad surpassed the thirty-pound mark or a resounding victory and their firstChampionship on the Montana Cats tour (and I doubtthe last). It wasn’t always in the bag though. “We hada really slow first three, our hours o fishing and thenit just turned on”, explained Nicholas. Relying on theirinstincts and time on the water, they never panicked.Landing an 11.26 lb Yellowstone River monster didn’t
hurt matters either (Big Fish o tourney). CongratsRandy and Nicholas on an outstanding tournament andyour FIRS M CAS CHAMPIONSHIP! Te 2016 B’N’M Angler o the Year race is sure to bea barn burner. Don’t miss out on any more o the action!Tere are still spots open in Monster Cat Roundup inSidney and Missouri River Catfish Clash in Williston.Montana Cats events are like a brotherhood…. you’llhave to join up to see what all the talk is about. About the bottle in Mike’s hand... I you think that’s a big bottle obeer Mike Molvig is holding in thephoto on the ront page, think again. It’s a jug o Linie Aquavit. Norwegiansmostly drink aquavit (“water o lie”)during holidays such as Christmas,
Easter, weddings, and o courseSyttende Mai. Te earliest known reerenceto “aquavit” is ound in a 1531letter rom the Danish Lord oBergenshus castle, Eske Bille toOlav Engelbrektsson, the lastRoman Catholic Archbishop oNorway. Te letter, dated April13, accompanying a package, offers the archbishop “some waterwhich is called Aqua Vite and is a
help or all sort o illness which aman can have both internally andexternally”. Distilled rom potatoes,Linie Aquavit is a Norwegian vodka inused with caraway, dill, aniseed, sweet ennel andcoriander (the licorice-y carawaydominates) and is most commonlydrunk as a kind o mouthwash between bites o ribbe —a cracklingly atty pork roast — around the holidays.
Actually, each nation around the Baltic Sea has itsown prevailing brand. Te Danes have Aalborg andthe Swedes have O.P., but the Norwegian Linie is thepreerred choice o those who are non-Scandinavian. Aquavit rom Norway tends to have even strongerflavors and a slightly darker color than its neighbors, thanks to a year or more o aging in oak casks, likewhiskey. Linie takes that tradition even urther, though:the name is Norwegian or “equator,” because to this day, each barrel is shipped around the world, rom Norwayto Australia and back, crossing the equator twice during
the journey. Tey claim that the rocking in the boat, theocean air, and the changes in temperature and humidityall go toward making it taste better, and it’s hard to arguewith the results. It’s gaining popularity in the United States as acocktail ingredient, although the elder Norske puristswould rown upon this, as they traditionally have agood chug o beer ollowed by a shot o linie. And thishas been going on since the 15th century!
Oh well, or a stiff Bloody Mary, give Linie a try, especially i you’ve got pickles in the mix.
