Dear Graduate,

Yes, I’m talking to you! Doesn’t it sound good? Congratulations on your momentous achievement! You have invested a great deal of your present to prepare for your future with this college degree or credential. You have likely worked harder than any other time in your life. Along the way, you have enjoyed the thrill of academic discovery and the challenge of intellectual pursuit.

Life is a journey, and today represents a tremendous milestone in your life’s journey. For many of you, earning your undergraduate, graduate or professional certification is your most significant accomplishment to date, and you should be proud of yourself. I know that we are proud of you and what you have achieved.

The journey continues after today’s celebrations. You are going out into a world that needs your talent, your skills and your determination to make a difference. You will need to continue your education—it is now part of your life’s journey, whether it takes place in the classroom or in the community.

On behalf of California State University San Marcos, I wish you the very best for a happy and rewarding future, and I congratulate your loved ones who supported your quest for this achievement. MaceFollowing a long history as an article of war, by the 14th century the mace became a symbol of authority and pageantry that was used in processions by city mayors and other dignitaries. Academic institutions included the mace as an emblem of order and authority in ceremonial occasions. The first recorded use was at the University of Vienna in 1385.

The California State University San Marcos mace is carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress.

Cal State San Marcos is unusual in that it has two ceremonial maces. The first is an informal mace that recognizes the special relationship the campus has

with the tukwut, the Luiseño name for mountain lion. This mace was carved in wood by a member of the Luiseño tribe and is ornamented with beads. The student body president or a chosen representative, who leads the procession of graduates, carries the informal mace in the Commencement procession.

The Chair of Academic Senate or a chosen representative carries the formal mace while leading the faculty in the Commencement procession. The formal mace is made of walnut and brass. It bears the official seal of the University and is inscribed with the date the campus was founded. It was donated by the Cal State San Marcos Alumni Association in May 1998.

The

Academic Regalia and CeremonyThe caps and gowns worn by graduates and faculty are based on costumes used in universities of the 14th and 15th centuries, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge in England. This academic dress has been used in the United States from colonial times and was standardized by an Intercollegiate Code in 1895. Like the military of medieval times with its pages, squires and knights, the academic world has long had three basic grades of dignity and achievement. These are undergraduates, bachelors and masters (or doctors). The distinction between masters and doctors is comparatively recent; both imply the right to teach.

Black is the most common color for academic gowns. There is no trimming on the gowns for the bachelor or master’s degrees. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the sleeves. The color in the master’s costume is restricted to the hood worn around the neck and down the back. This is edged with velvet or a color that indicates the subject area of the degree received and is lined with silk of the colors of the institution that granted the degree.

Doctors have a larger and more open hood lined, like the master’s hood, with the colors of the degree-granting institution and trimmed with the light blue color that signifies the education discipline. As noted above, gowns have black or colored velvet on the sleeves and the front. Usually doctors will wear a gold tassel on their cap. In recent years, some universities have broken away from the traditional scheme and allowed their doctors to wear brighter, more original costumes; for instance, Yale’s blue with black trim and Harvard’s crimson and black.

Candidates for bachelor’s degrees do not usually wear hoods.

Academic HonorsCalifornia State University San Marcos recognizes students who have attained distinction by the awarding of Latin honors.

There are three distinctions of Latin honorsSumma Cum Laude (with highest praise) Requires a grade-point average of 3.9 to 4.0.

Magna Cum Laude (with great praise) Requires an average of 3.7 to 3.89.

Cum Laude (with praise) Requires an average of 3.5 to 3.69.

Honors designees wear a gold cord.

Class champions/Student Philanthropist wear a blue and white chord.


HONORARY DEGREES HONORARY DEGREES

A molecular biologist, an executive and a diversity advocate. She was a key contributor on the team whose research first showed that bacteria could be induced to produce insulin, a milestone in the birth of the biotechnology industry.

Villa-Komaroff was one of 11 scientists profiled on the White House Office of Science and Technology website during the Obama administration and was featured with five other

scientists in the PBS series “Discovering Women” in 1995.

She has been a signature speaker at CSUSM’s Arts and Lectures series and a keynote speaker for the University’s 20th anniversary week-long celebration of naming César Chávez plaza and installing the Chávez statue.

Villa-Komaroff’s numerous awards and honors

include induction into the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Hall of Fame, a National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award from The Museum of Science and Industry, and an award for Women of Distinction from the American Association of University Women. Villa-Komaroff was a founding member of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, an organization focused on training and supporting the next generation of diverse STEM talent.

She is the founder of Intersection, SBD Consulting and serves on the boards of the American Type Culture Center; the Keck Graduate Institute; the Boston-based Biomedical Careers Program, and Cytonome/ST, LLC, where she also served as CEO and CSO. Additionally, Villa-Komaroff is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Women in Science.

Villa-Komaroff is a role model for aspiring “STEMers,” actively encouraging and mentoring students, particularly Hispanic and American Indian women, to pursue careers in science. She is a highly distinguished and respected scientist who has proven that gender and race are barriers that can be overcome when aspiring to become a prominent figure in science.

A former foster youth who became an award-winning country recording artist. His songs and stories highlight his mission to raise awareness for children in the foster care system.

Wayne’s stories stem from his own experiences within foster care. He was forced into a series of foster homes while his mother was in prison. Wayne was homeless multiple times, including a stretch after migrating out of the foster

care system at 16. Then an encounter with a neighborhood couple led to a job, a place to live and created the pillars for his final foster family. During this time, Wayne committed himself to completing his education, living a better life and exploring his love of music.

He earned a record deal and began scoring No. 1 singles while performing in prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden and the

Grand Ole Opry. Wayne’s hits include, “Do You Believe Me Now,” “I Love You This Much,” which was featured as part of Coca-Cola’s #ShareASong Campaign, and “Paper Angels,” which became a made-for-TV movie.

In 2010, Wayne walked from Nashville to Phoenix to raise awareness for kids aging out of the foster care system. His efforts encouraged legislative bills in California, North Carolina and Tennessee to extend foster care service from 18 to 21. His New York Times bestselling autobiography, “Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way,” chronicles his story and efforts to make a difference.

California State University San Marcos was honored to feature Wayne with a day-long campus visit in 2017, including a performance as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration of the University’s ACE Scholars Services, which serves more former foster youth per capita than any other university program in the nation.

Wayne continues to work tirelessly on behalf of at-risk foster youth by performing, writing books, sharing keynote addresses and through his work with Project Meet Me Halfway.

They have devoted a large portion of their adult lives to philanthropy related to foster youth and other civic areas. Their commitment stems from their own journey of fostering and adopting their own children.

The Stearns strongly advocate for access to higher education and its impact on the quality of life for foster youth. In 2014, they donated $1 million in support of ACE Scholars Services, a California State University San Marcos program that addresses the low educational attainment rate of foster youth by meeting their unique needs. In recognition of this gift, CSUSM named the program’s renovated space the Jan and Esther Stearns Center for ACE Scholars. The Stearns are also co-founders of Braid Mission, a

program that works to build community around foster youth in the Bay Area. The program has developed a team mentoring approach that surrounds foster youth with the presence of a caring community.

Jan Stearns has devoted 20 years to raising their children and advocating for foster youth. Her professional background and experience are in the entertainment industry where she has held positions such as director of operations for Editel San Francisco, once the largest editing facility in Northern California, and business manager for Sound Recording Organization, a sound and production facility.

Esther Stearns is a former financial services

executive with three decades of experience at some of the largest and most innovative advisory firms in the U.S. She most recently served as CEO of Nestwise, LLC, where she developed a national platform for delivering high-quality financial advice to the American middle class. Esther also served as vice chair for CSUSM’s Foundation Board.

Throughout California, the Stearns have helped foster youth realize their dream for college and attain their degree. They continue to support CSUSM and ACE Scholars Services through their ongoing philanthropy and advocacy for foster youth.

A doctorate is the highest academic degree that can be earned. The program is delivered in partnership with CSUSM and UCSD. CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE To The Graduates

Dear Class of 2018,

Today, you are surrounded by your peers, loved ones and the entire California State University community – all those who supported you in your journey.

Indeed, celebrate the faculty who deepened your knowledge and expanded your horizons. Celebrate the counselors, advisors, librarians, tutors, coaches, facilities and support staff who created the environment for your success. Celebrate your family, friends and colleagues whose support and belief in you never wavered.

But most importantly, know that we are here to celebrate you – your determination, passion, drive and vision for the future – both your own future and the one you will create for the world.

As new opportunities await you, so too do new responsibilities. For you are now and always part of the CSU alumni family. You join a successful, impactful and generous community more than 3.4 million strong. Together, you build a better tomorrow for your neighbors, for the United States and for our world.

So as you start a new chapter, I encourage you to stay connected to the CSU, both your campus and the larger university. Connect with classmates, seek out faculty as mentors and join alumni chapters. Look for opportunities to give back. Support the generations who seek to follow in your footsteps.
