ST. ANDREW’S CATHOLIC CHURCH MAY 10, 2020

St. Francis House is accepting much needed food donations at 836 Campbell Ave. Curb side drop off is available from 9:00am—12:00pm. Please call (540) 268-0044 to make a drop-off appointment. They need diapers, wipes and fresh produce. For other donation options, email Megan at [email protected].

St. Francis House needs volunteers! If you do not fall into any of the vulnerable categories and can give a few hours of your time, they can use your help! Volunteering might be a bit scary with everything going on, but if you are interested, please get in touch with CCC. In light of that, they have sped up their volunteer process. Those interested can visit https://www.cccofva.org/volunteer to fill out an application. Be sure to specify that you're looking to volunteer with the food pantry. Once you complete your application, you'll be forwarded directly to staff that manages the food pantry.

Father Paul Maier’s 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood is Saturday, May 16! Due to the lockdown, Father Paul is unable to celebrate Mass and gather with friends. But we can show our love and support by sending a card with our congratulations and best wishes! If you would like to send him a card, please mail it to Father Paul Maier at the following address: Our Lady of the Valley, Room 305, 650 N. Jefferson St., Roanoke, VA 24016

Because of the COVID-19 Virus restrictions on gatherings, St. Andrew’s Diocesan Cemetery will not be celebrating our annual Memorial Day Liturgy at the cemetery on Monday, 25, 2020. However, Memorial Day flags will be posted on

our Veterans’ graves during this special weekend and through Flag Day, June 14. Please keep in your prayers all of our deceased veterans buried at St. Andrew’s who unselfishly gave their life so that we could have the freedoms we enjoy today. God bless them and those serving in the Armed Forces today. If you have any questions, please contact Mandy Tolano at 540-595-7173.

St. Rita of Cascia ~ Feast Day ~ May 22

Augustinian nun, also called Margarita. She was born in Roccaporena, near Spoleto, Italy, in 1381, and expressed from an early age the desire to become a nun. Her elderly parents insisted that she be married at the age of twelve to a man described in accounts of her life as cruel and harsh. She spent eighteen extremely unhappy years, had two sons, and was finally widowed when her husband was killed in a brawl. Both sons also died, and Rita, still anxious to become a nun, tried unsuccessfully to enter the Augustinians in their convent at Cascia. She was refused because she was a widow and because of the requirement that all sisters should be virgins. Finally, in 1413, the order gave her entry, and she earned fame for her austerity, devotion to prayer, and charity.

In the midst of chronic illnesses, she received visions and wounds on her forehead which resembled the crown of thorns. She died on May 22 at Cascia, and many miracles were reported instantly. Canonized in 1900, she is honored in Spain as La Santa de los Impossibles and elsewhere as a patron saint of hopeless causes.
