Yesterday saw the arrival home of our Year 6's who have been away for two days in Dunedin. Keep an eye out for their reflections on their class blog, and in their news and views. This event is just one of the many opportunities across our school that we use to add depth, flavour and context to our students learning - which in this case was specifically for our senior students. Well done Amy, our soloists Katie Heads and Samantha Koppert and the whole choir for your effort. It helped contribute to a special night for all involved. Last week your staff were involved in some professional learning time with the rest of our ICT cluster. The sessions involved the principals, all of the staff, and the BOT’s at different times during the day and contained some great discussion over a wide range of aspects and questions around ICT, mobile learning, where technology is heading and its subsequent impact on teaching and learning. Welcome this week to Ajay and Ricky Smith and their parents Katrina and Adam into Room Kowhai and the wider school community.

School life over the last week has been busy! Some highlights are:

Last Friday Rooms Miro (5), Totara (7) and Kauri (8) all spent the day in Riverton as part of this terms inquiry, 'Building a strong foundation together'. This is centred around the big idea ‘My effort and contribution to the group has an impact on how well we work together' and the key words of 'Team Work' and 'Cultural Awareness'.

Yesterday saw the arrival home of our Year 6's who have been away for two days in Dunedin. They attended the Young Leaders conference, a specialist art learning opportunity at the museum, staying the night in the Discovery Centre, visitng the Butterfly House, other

Museum activities and a visit to Moana Pool! Keep an eye out for their reflections on their class blog, and in their news and views. This event is just one of the many opportunities across our school that we use to add depth, flavour and context to our students learning - which in this case was specifically for our senior students.

Last night saw our Myross Bush School choir participate in the second night of the 'Kids for kids' concert which was held at the Civic Theatre. Amy Polaschek had put in a lot of time and effort with them over the last several weeks and their enthusiasm and talent did us proud! Well done Amy, our soloists Katie Heads and Samantha Koppert and the whole choir for your effort. It helped contribute to a special night for all involved.

Last week your staff were involved in some professional learning time with the rest of our ICT cluster. The sessions involved the principals, all of the staff, and

the BOT’s at different times during the day and contained some great discussion over a wide range of aspects and questions around ICT, mobile learning, where technology is heading and its subsequent impact on teaching and learning. Please take a moment to browse over and digest some of the 'throw away lines worth keeping' and share your thoughts and reflections with us on those posts.

Please take note of the Southern Zone Cross Country notice coming home today as that event day of Friday 25th May is fast approaching.

School News:

Lunches: A reminder that children are not able to have noodles that require hot water added for lunch and all items to be heated must be in tin foil except for pies that are in the bags they are purchased in and safe for pie warmers. We are not able to heat items in the microwave so they must all be able to be placed in the pie warmer. Thank you for your help with this.

Facebook: This has been a great way to be updated with all the happenings in Dunedin on the Young Leaders trip as they happen.

Please Help: A reminder that all children who have been issued with Hi Viz vests actually wear them to school. Your help ensuring they have their vests on before they leave home is important on these dark mornings.

Friends of the School:

Two great days in Dunedin for the Year 6 students this week.

Week 4 Term 2

MANUKA are enjoying training for cross country by running laps around the field and totalling them on a chart. We are aiming to run the equivalent distance from Invercargill to Nelson through a combined effort (kilometers slightly modified to make this achievable!) I am so impressed with our cultural detectives - they have been finding some great examples of everyday evidence of Maori culture. Keep up the great work!

KOWHAI We welcome Ricky and Ajay Smith and their family to the Kowhai kids this week. It is really exciting to see all the discoveries being made by our cultural detectives as they hunt out ways Maori culture is reflected in our everyday lives. We are doing a lot of thinking and talking about how to work well in a group. Have you visited our blog to fill out the form about groups we belong to yet? We will make graphs from our data. Please make sure those water bottles come to school each day. Learning is thirsty work!

RIMU have been working hard at maths time each day. We are practising our basic facts every day. To help with this I will be sending home some flash cards for the children to practice. This should help with the speed that they can recall these facts. The children will need help practising these to make sure that they are getting the answers correct. The children are encouraged not to use their fingers but to solve the problems in their heads. While this may be slower initially it will work out to be quicker in the end. Thanks for your help in this matter. Natalie Godby.

RATA has had lots of children away this week with the Chickenpox. In Math's this week we have been exploring symmetry and have been making symmetrical patterns. We have been writing couplet poems and will publish some of these on our class blog. Watch out for these later in the week. Thanks for your support and have a great week.

MIRO What an amazing trip to Riverton. A huge thank you to the parents and grandparents that were able to join us.• I liked the stone chisels and smooth rocks we saw in the museum. Adam• I enjoyed sketching the old cottage and looking at the whale bones. Danja• I enjoyed visiting the museum and looking around. Jayden• I never knew stones could be that soft before. Hannah• Mrs Horton found out that a Kupa was a wooden barrell.• Miro are on assembly and hope to see you there.

We all agreed that the skate park was awesome.

TOTARAThanks to all the super parent help we had last Friday on our trip to Riverton for our Inquiry! It was a great day that the students and adults alike enjoyed finding out more about the history of Maori and Early European in the area. We enjoyed looking through Kohikohi Cottage, the oldest and first built house in Riverton, dating back to 1835! We are grateful for the knowledgeable tour guides we had at both Te Hikoi Museum and the Cottage. We were also lucky to have Sophie Sinclair present and donate an old medicine bottle from her Grandmothers archives at the Hospital that used to belong to Dr Trotter. He was an important man in the history of the area, who used to live in the big old red brick house on the left as you enter Riverton.

KAURI • The Young Leaders trip was really great and we had a fun speaker, James Beck, who talked to us about living in Christchurch and has written a song about cheering people up - Campbell• I liked the museum especially when we went for a night walk around the museum while everything was dark - Sophie• My favourite part about the trip was the Moana swimming pool because I liked the high diving board and the river there. I really enjoyed the speaker too because he plays the ukulele - Robert
