Real Life WisdomWednesday’s teaser: A man is trapped in a room. In the room there is a table, a chair, two doors, and a small hole in the ceiling 10 inches in diameter. Behind one of the doors is an extremely hungry lion that hasn’t eaten in a couple of days. Behind the other door is a glass tunnel that magnifies the sun, creating temperatures so high that even opening the door could kill you. How does the man escape?Answer: He waits until it is night (he can tell through the hole in the ceiling) then leaves through the glass tunnel. Today’s teaser: I am a nice word composed of five letters, but the Romans would call me a numbers. What word am I? Hint: The word is polite.

Roubie Younkin and Shelley Mills from MSU Extension Service gave a video presentation on edible bugs followed by serving up Rice Krispie treats with ants and banana bread made with ground mealworm. They also had students dissect a bug and informed students of the allowed bug content in our everyday foods. Some of us are not too eager to eat peanut butter now!

What’s in a bug?

Tracy Cumber and Kevin Farr from NRCS led a workshop on soil health and gave a cultural presentation. Tracy Cumber talked about soil content and types. Kevin Farr showed different materials that can be used to make an arrowhead, such as leather and various rocks. Colter Cumber holds an amazing arrow made by Kevin.

Did you know you can buy high quality sterilized owl pellets? Just $42.95 gets you 15 barn owl pellets and all the instructions and tools to have fun dissecting them!

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host a public open house in Glasgow for the Fish & Wildlife Commission on May 21, which will be followed by the commission’s regular monthly meeting in Fort Peck, on May 22. The open house will be held for area residents to informally visit with Fish & Wildlife Commissioners and other FWP staff. The open house starts at 6:30 p.m. on May 21 at FWP Region 6 Headquarters, 54078 U.S. Highway 2 West. Before the open house commissioners will participate in an Intake Diversion Dam and paddlefish tour on the lower Yellowstone River. That’s set to begin at 8 a.m. The commission’s regular meeting – also open to the public -- will begin at 8:30 a.m. on May 22 at the Fort Peck Hatchery in Fort Peck, 277 Highway 117. Commissioners will make final decisions on:• Public safety and construction-

related closure rules on the Big Hole, Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers;

• moose, bighorn sheep, mountain

goat hunting quotas outside biennial ranges;

• a bighorn sheep and domestic sheep commingling management area in northern Montana; and

• a grazing lease on the Robb Ledford Wildlife Management Area near Sheridan.

• The commission will also consider proposals for:

• a temporary waiver of fishing bag limits for trout on Camas Lake and Elkhorn Creek near Hamilton;

• upcoming wolf hunting and trapping seasons;

• wolf quotas for landowner take allowed under a recently passed law;

• upcoming furbearer trapping seasons and harvest quotas;

• upcoming upland game bird hunting harvest quotas and limits;

• a work plan for nongame conservation funded by income tax check-off contributions;

• a hunting access agreement in Hunting District 411 in the Snowy Mountains; and

• a two-year cooperative management area agreement

for access to Avista Corporation property in Sanders County.

FWP will seek the commission’s endorsement to proceed with projects that would: conserve fish and wildlife habitat and allow for angling, hunting, and other recreational use on 635 acres along the Musselshell River in central Montana; create an in-stream flow lease on Cow Creek near Chinook; and allow for bighorn sheep augmentations or transplants in several areas. Informational items include reports on Montana’s water supply, a fish health rule and a recent request from Alberta, Canada wildlife officials for sage grouse to augment populations there. FWP ensures its meetings are fully accessible to those with special needs. To request arrangements, call the FWP Region 6 office at 406-228-3700. The full agenda and additional information on the scheduled topics can be found on the FWP website at fwp.mt.gov and by clicking on the “For Commission Information” section.
