Anglers both young and old look forward to this event each year, as it gives them an opportunity to catch freshly stocked trout, and enjoy the beginning of spring.

This is a family oriented event, with parents and grandparents proudly looking on as children get the chance to catch “the big one”. Our department is always excited to host this event, as it gives families the chance to share fun times, and to make future memories. Many of the adults who bring their children to the event tell of their parents fishing in the derby with them when they were children.

Throughout the day, a variety of age-appropriate prizes are awarded to lucky ticket holders. In addition, trophies are presented to the children who catch the biggest fish, or have the most weight caught with a 3-fish limit.

Fishing License ($12) is required for adults. Event hours: 8:00am - 1:00pm.

Each year, our department partners with the Licking County Aging Program and to provide senior citizens (age 55+ / physically challenged) with the opportunity to spend a day at T.J. Evans Park to enjoy fishing for trout and bluegill, eat a great picnic style lunch*, and to spend time with friends and relatives.

For many of the seniors, there is nothing that is more exciting than having a hard fighting bluegill on their line, and the anticipation of reeling it in for others to see. Bragging rights are often part of this fun-filled day for those who are lucky enough to catch a fish or two. Trophies and door prizes will be awarded. Donuts and coffee will be available for breakfast. Fishing License is exempted for the event day only. Event hours: 9:00am - 3:00pm. *Picnic lunch is optional at a cost of $3. Lunch tickets may be purchased at Heritage Hall.

This is the event that everyone talks about! Our 4th Annual Party On The Roof is shaping up to be the best one yet, as we transform the upper level of the Licking County Parking Garage in downtown Newark into a tropical paradise. With over 600 people attending past events, our goal this year is to host up to 1,000 people for an evening of fun, dancing, food and beverages. The tradition continues with Arnett Howard & Friends once again providing the featured entertainment. This Central Ohio Legend always gets the audience moving and shaking to his band’s unique tropical music.

Please note that as a fundraiser for the Newark Parks Department, no one is permitted to carry in food or beverages of any kind to the event, and all patrons must be at least 21 to participate.

Tickets are $10 each, or you can reserve a table that seats 10 people for $100 if purchased in advance of the event. Tickets sold the day of the event or at the door will be $20 per person. Event hours: 6:00pm - 11:00pm.

This fishing instructional day has become a huge hit for our parks department. In partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, we have been able to work with children ages 5-12 who have not had much opportunity to experience the sport of fishing. With the help of the ODNR park officers and local volunteers, the children are instructed on all of the aspects of fishing, and then spend time actually fishing at the park for catfish, trout, and bluegill.

The end result of this free program is that boys and girls are able to enjoy a day at T. J. Evans Park fishing, receiving prizes, eating a picnic style meal, and making new friends their own age. This a great experience for the children in our community.

Fishing License is not required. Event hours: 10:00am - 1:00pm. This event is limited to the first 25 children that register.

This event held in partnership with the Licking County Historical Society (LCHS) is well known for its historical and informational significance. Re-enactors dressed up in period clothing, take turns telling tales of the life of various unique or prominent individuals who are interned here at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Generals, doctors, politicians and other infamous or interesting people are selected each year to have their stories told in a first person format.

The people who attend the event talk about it for weeks afterwards, and always vow to return the next year to learn more about those buried here. Who knows, you may learn something interesting about a long lost relative.

Event time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Cost is Free for LCHS Members, $5 for Non-members.

With lots of prizes given away during this free evening event, and the chance to win $50 if they catch one of two catfish tagged specifically for the tournament, participants always have a fun time at this event.

Nothing compares to a child that gets a catfish on the line, then proudly reels it in to show their parents and grandparents what they have caught. As is often said, “it doesn’t get any better than this.”

The entire staff of the Newark Cemetery/Parks Department works very hard to provide wholesome family events for the citizens of Newark and surrounding communities to enjoy, and the catfish derby is a perfect example of an event that brings entire families together to have fun and create memories at the same time.

Fishing License is required for both participating adults ($12) and children ($5). Event hours: 8:00pm - 12:00am Midnight.

The Parks & Recreation Department is proud to have created this event in the hopes of helping to spread the word about breast cancer, and show our support to those who fight the battle everyday to beat this terrible disease. As is well known, every person has someone in their lives that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Friends, relatives, mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and aunts. Even men are susceptible to this cancer, and the numbers are growing each year.

This will be the fourth year for our program, and it includes speeches, stories, tales of survival, and a candlelight vigil to remember those who have passed on from this disease, and those who continue to survive. We hope and wish that individuals and businesses will join us on the Courthouse Square to show our combined support for those who are involved with the daily struggle of dealing with the disease.

The event, centered at the gazebo, starts promptly at 6:00pm, and concludes about 7:30pm. At 7:00pm, the Courthouse Clock Tower is aglow with the illumination of 48 pink light bulbs that shine for the entire month of October in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making a major statement over downtown Newark.

This program allows children to write a letter to Santa Claus at:

Santa Claus c/o Newark City Parks & Recreation Department 275 North Cedar Street Newark, Ohio 43055

We assure each child that we will deliver the letter to Santa himself, and he will write a personal letter to each child in return.

In addition to responding to the request for toys of all types, Santa makes a point to remind the children of the love their parents and grandparents have for them, and to be sure to be good for their parents and shower them with lots of hugs and kisses.

To each of you from all of us…Merry Christmas!
