Explore Wonders of Gothic Cathedrals On Tuesday, May 16 at 7 p.m., professional art-ist, musician and art historian Sean Crum will present “The Glory of the Gothic: the Great Gothic Cathedrals” at Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road. The Westlake-Westshore Arts Council is spon-soring this enlightening and entertaining program, and provides it free to the community. Crum will review the development of Gothic Ca-thedrals of late Middle Ages in Europe as masterpieces of art, architecture and engineering. Pointed arches, fly-ing buttresses and high curved ceilings characterized the Gothic style of architecture, used in Western Europe during the 12th to 15th centuries, The WWAC invites you to enjoy this informed view of historic cathedrals.

The Rube Goldberg Machine Challenge was a main com-petition, where the Westlake senior team of David Eppele, Sneha Ramachandran, Jackson Liang, and Mark Sargent won the 3rd place trophy and a $1000 grant for the T & E Department. Their proj-ect was titled “Terrific Toy Factory”, a theme revolving around the various pieces and objects iconic to every-one’s childhood.

lake-Bay Village Rotary Club to provide 20 Wandering Safety Kits to help area families protect their children from the dangers of wander-ing. Students in all grades throughout the district participated in fundraising efforts through designated themed dress-up days and brought in money reflective of the day, like Pennies for PJ’s (wear pj’s if you bring pennies), Neon Nickel day (wear neon), Dazzling Dimes day (dress up in your best), Quirky Quarters day (wear silly clothes, hats) and Light it up Blue Friday ($1). T-shirts were also sold and other individual fundraisers were held throughout the district. Examples of how awareness was raised throughout the district included a door decorating contest at Heritage, and au-tism facts read on the daily announcements by students with autism. The cafeteria at Heritage even served blue jello. During the assembly on Friday, several teachers were ‘re-warded’ with pies in the face for reaching certain dollar amount contributions raised by students. Building principals Jason Call and Tim Rickard partici-pated in a hysterical “dance-off ” and ther fun activities engaged the students. The schools also had a special day when students and staff were encouraged to wear blue and donate $1 which helped towards the fundraising goal. The community was encouraged to purchase blue light bulbs from Home Depot and show sup-

port by lighting up homes/businesses blue. Outside Heritage Elementary, a metal puzzle display has been erected, donated by Affiliated Metal Indus-tries Inc. of Olmsted Falls. The owners of the company have children in the school district. The display has a blue light spotlight shining in the evenings. On a nationwide level, the Puzzle Piece symbol reflects the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Also, since every puzzle piece is different in some way, a puzzle piece accu-rately represents the diversity of the individuals affected. Heritage Guidance Counselor, Jessica Stringer, spearheaded much of the efforts throughout the school/district.

The Avon Local Schools have a long history of supporting Autism Awareness Month and this year the students and staff once again stepped up. As the month came to a close on Friday, April 28, a special assembly took place at Avon Heritage Elementary School from 1 to 2 p.m. During that time, Mayor Bryan Jensen pre-sented a special proclamation regarding Autism Awareness Month. A special check presentation also took place with representatives from Milestones Autism Re-sources (http://milestones.org). The district has been raising funds throughout the month for the local organization. Last year, a check was presented for $10,451. The district expected even more money to be do-nated this year and the amount did not disappoint as the total reached $12,003!

Arlene Watts, RN, 93, is a very special lady with a very special story. She was honored two weeks ago by Pathways Hospice and the Crile Museum at Tri-C West for her work as a nurse during the years of World War II. As a young nursing student at Fairview Hos-pital, Arlene worked with wounded soldiers of that era at the Crile General Hospital, which originally occupied the property of Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus in Parma. Tri-C West opened in 1966, but the timeless work of the Crile Hospital has been preserved with-in the Tri-C Archive Center there, administered by

The Normandy Senior Living: A Very Special Nurse’s StoryVietnam veteran Dr. James Banks. Dr. Banks learned of Arlene Watts and her histo-ry with the Crile Hospital through Pathways Hospice. “We contacted him to come out and interview her,” said Norma Kleem, MSW, LSW, Social Worker in the Pathways “We Honor Veterans” program. “She shared a lot of really interesting stories about the time she was there,” said Kleem. “She had a photo album and also her nursing uniform. She donated both to the archives.” “We Honor Veterans” is a special program that Pathways Hospice holds dear. “Mostly, we want to say how we still salute veterans through our ‘We Honor Veterans’ pro-gram that is so well deserved,” said Willie Springer, Chaplain/Veteran Liaison/Bereavement Coordina-tor for Pathways. “We are walking the last journey with them as far as hospice is concerns. As we al-ways say, we want to give these people the flowers while they are still with us, and we want to hear their stories before they take them.” “Her stories and memories of Crile are very close to her heart. They made her the nurse she became for the rest of her life because she carried those experiences with her,” added Kleem. Thank you, Arlene Watts! We salute you!

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. This year, why not give Mom a gift that can help her far into the future? For example, you could write her a check to help fund her IRA. In 2017, she can put in up to $5,500, or $6,500 if she’s 50 or older, so every amount will help. With its tax advantages and an almost limit-less range of investment options, an IRA is a great retirement-savings vehicle. You could also consider writing her a check to pay for one or two months’ worth of your mother’s life or disability insurance premiums. And you might want to connect her to a financial professional who can offer suggestions for dealing with the potentially huge expenses of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. (Keep in mind that your mom can use any monetary gift as she chooses, she does not have to use the money to fund her IRA or pay insurance premiums.) Finally, think about donating to a charitable organization your mother supports. You’ll feel good about making the gift, and you could gain some tax benefits, too. Your mother has done a lot for you. This Mother’s Day, show her you appreciate her efforts by making a financial gift that could have a real impact on her life. It was a note(!)-worthy night the evening of April 26 as the good time musi-cal group - the Avon Sing-a-Longs - made their 250th appearance at the newly opened Rose Senior Living in Avon. Guests shared in song, celebration and cake as the good times rolled and voices rose to tunes of popular standards. Guitarist/Vocalist Lee Holzhauer and Banjo artiste extraordinaire Les Spike helped lead the group as songbooks were passed out to residents as they joined in chorus with favorite standards of the generation. Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen joined in the celebration by recognizing the good cheer the Sing-a-Longs bring to the community.

Now in its 11th year, the Bay Village Waterways Clean-up Day sponsored by The Bay Village Foundation, Bay High Project Earth Club, Bay Village Green Team and the Scouts will be held on Saturday May 27 at 11 a.m. All are welcome to meet at the Bay Middle School cafeteria to sign in be-fore 11 a.m. Volunteers of all ages will go out in groups to clean up the Bay waterways and surrounding areas. Children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian or bring signed permission slip. The city provides trash bags and gloves for use in picking up debris along Cahoon Creek, Columbia Park, Bay Boat Club, and other portions of the Lake Erie waterfront. The group works for more than two hours and finishes up back at the Mid-dle School where The Bay Village Foundation provides lunch. The Village Foundation began the Clean-up Day pro-

gram in 2006 with the help of the Bay City Services Depart-ment and with the support of then Mayor Deborah Suther-land. The Bay Village Foundation trustees, families, Bay students and Boy Scout troops joined in the initial effort. Shortly thereafter, Mayor Sutherland founded the Bay Vil-lage Green Team and the members of that group have par-ticipated every year since. Most years, the weather has cooperated, but working around the water – even on nice days – can be wet and mud-dy. Participants are asked to wear clothes that they don’t mind getting muddy or wet because Clean-up Day and trash pick-up goes on rain or shine. Most volunteers wear boots and find the gloves provided by the City of Bay Village to be very useful. Students, Scouts, Parents and other groups looking for service projects are welcome to participate.
