Easter is the crowning achievement of God which happened at a parcular me and is now marked forever as the moment of a permanent and life changing giſt. It is the season of commencements. High school and college seniors across our nation will be going through graduation cer-emonies and listening to commencement addresses. In some significant portion of those addresses, someone will point to the meaning of the word “commencement.” The speaker will remind the students that the true meaning of this moment is not about what has been completed but what is now beginning in each of their lives.

Let me offer a differing view. I think we are too quick to look to what is to come and dismiss what has been and also, therefore, what is. The power of the moment in graduation, as far as I’m concerned, is that you are now a graduate. You will always be a graduate, which is something that will never fade away or weaken with time. You are and always will be, from the moment of graduation, a graduate. The permanence of this moment, in a world in which everything is fleeting, is truly worth noting and celebrating.

We could easily call Easter the Christian commencement. It could accurately be de-scribed as the moment in which everything changed and the world was made new.

I find myself wanting to slow that sentiment down. It is accurate, but I need to be reminded of the permanence of Easter. On Easter day, Jesus rose from the dead and the world was begun anew. But I also want to never forget Jesus did something on that Easter morning which is a divinely-created achievement that will never lessen or dimin-ish with age. On that day and at that moment, we were forever marked as God’s loved and redeemed people. Easter is the crowning achievement of God which happened at a particular time and is now marked forever as the moment of a permanent and life changing gift. Like a gigantic spiritual graduation ceremony held by God for the benefit of all of humanity.

It is a moment in time that is permanent. It is a crowning achievement which will nev-er diminish. It will not tarnish with age or lessen as our bodies grow weak.

And though our diplomas are permanent in this life, they ultimately have no relevance on an eternal time scale. But in Easter our love and redemption from God remain permanent for all eternity. Easter is forever. We are redeemed, we are loved, we are forgiven…now and for all eternity.

Our inaugural gathering will take place on Sunday, May 6 and we would love to have you there!

CELEBRATIONS SUNDAY There will be a lot of excitement around St. Luke’s on Sunday, May 6 as we celebrate Senior Sunday, when we honor our graduating high schoolers, and have the 5th Grade Bible Presentation.

If this is a possibility, please contact Jon Tonge at [email protected].

Remembering a Saint of the Church and a Son of AtlantaThank you to everyone who attended, baked pies or otherwise helped make last month’s service so meaningful.

The Vestry Corner is a monthly feature that provides the congregation a window into the Vestry’s work on its behalf and a way for the Vestry to advance important topics of interest.

Business items from the March and April Vestry meetings:

•BUDGET The Vestry passed a balanced budget. One of our objectives for 2018 was to pass an operating budget that lives within the means provided to the church by pledges and gifts, real estate revenue (parking lots and sign shop rental), and endowment draw. With changes that took place in financial operations, the movement to three priests, and a sharp focus on all church expenses, the 2018 budget ac-complishes that. There are several items that we all should note:

1.Funding is provided for the necessary staffing for the youth and children’s ministry currently led by Kristin Lennon.2.Passing a balanced budget was not a simple task. With constant future expense growth, St. Luke’s will need to grow the church community with member- ship additions or additional contributions from existing members.3.The Spending Policy for the Endowment and Boylston funds provide some support for the operating budget. The current policy provides 4.8% of the fund balances annually. To ensure the long-term preservation of the funds, this amount gradually will be reduced to 4.0% over the next 10 years. This change aligns with changes made by our foundation/endowment advisors and by other non-profit endowments. This will add additional future pressure to our operating budget.4.Expected capital items like the $250,000 boiler replace- ment are not provided for in the operating budget and will need to be funded from other sources.

•NEW MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS New members will be introduced to the congregation by including photos/profiles in the Shepherd’s Voice.•YOUTH/CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Youth and Children’s Ministries are a top focus for St. Luke’s. The Vestry fully supports Kristin Lennon and Elizabeth Shows Caffey as they craft their plan for this essential work. Once Kristin has had time to assess the current program, she and Elizabeth will hire an additional person to complete the team.•ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT for The Rev. Horace Griffin and The Rev. Elizabeth Shows Caffey. Given the change in clergy duties prompted by the move- ment to three priests, existing church staffing has been reconfigured to provide administrative sup- port for Horace and Elizabeth.•MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. VIGIL SERVICE The Vestry commended Dan and clergy/staff on crafting this very meaningful service that was attended by 225 people; the spirit was palpable!

We’re studying the book of Ruth, an idealized story of what life would look like if God’s people treated each other with His loving-kindness—insiders and outsiders alike. A key understanding in Ruth is that God uses these acts of the loving-kindness of people to demonstrate that which God gives to all, whether they realize it or not. All are welcome! Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Parkins Room.

Faith and Film gathers on Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m. to watch Promised Land (2012), the story of a salesman for a natural gas company who experiences life-changing events after ar-riving in a small town, where his corporation wants to tap into the available resources. Faith and Film is a monthly opportunity for St. Luke’s adults to share a movie, snacks, fellowship, and a lively discussion of issues of faith raised by the film. Those who attend bring a snack to share and a beverage. All St. Luke’s adults are welcome. For location, contact Donna Church (404-522-3889 | [email protected]).

VBS – it’S not juSt for kidS!Please join the fun as a VBS volunteer June 11 – 15 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. as we guide the St. Luke’s children in God’s way of peace through music, games, art, storytelling, and science! There are so many ways to get involved, large or small: * Lead an activity, one day or all five * Serve as a Group Leader * Provide snacks for volunteers * Join the VBS Coordinating TeamVolunteering is fun, easy, and essential—we can’t do this without you! Contact Kristin Lennon for more information or to sign up: [email protected].

COMING SOON Dreamer Photos and Profiles are BackAs our “I Have A Dream”(r) Ministry approach-es the finish line, please take a moment to appreciate what our Dreamers have accom-plished. These Photo/Profiles represent the cumulative successes of our 17+ years of ministry! Look for the updated exhibit in the Glenn Gallery in May and June.

Plan to join us next Sunday for lunch as parishioners and friends enjoy good food and fellowship at a neighboring restaurant on the first Sunday of each month. On May 6, the group will meet at Murphy’s (997 Virginia Avenue) at 12:45 pm. For more information,

please contact The Rev. Horace L. Griffin.
