LOVE YOUR HUSBAND. Titus 2:4 calls for wives "to love their husbands." A good de-scription of the kind of love your husband needs is "unconditional acceptance." In other words, accept your husband just as he is—an imperfect person.

Love also means being committed to a mutu-ally fulfilling sexual relationship. There is a whole lot more to love than sex, but we are looking at how to fulfill God's command to love our husbands. Therefore, we must look at love from their perspective, not just our own.

Surveys show that sex is one of a man's most important needs—if not the most im-portant. When a wife resists intimacy, is un-interested, or is only passively interested, her husband may feel rejection. It will cut at his self-image, tear at him to the very center of his being, and create isolation.

My husband's sexual needs should be more important and higher on my priority list than menus, housework, projects, activities, and even the children. It does not mean that I should think about sex all day and every day, but it does mean that I find ways to remem-ber my husband and his needs. It means I save some of my energy for him. It keeps me from being selfish and living only for my own needs and wants. Maintaining that focus helps me defeat isolation in our marriage.

THE ROLE OF WIVES Second Part

RESPECT YOUR HUSBAND. In Ephesians 5:33, Paul says, " … the wife must respect her husband." When you respect your hus-band you reverence him, notice him, regard him, honor him, prefer him, and esteem him. It means valuing his opinion, admiring his wisdom and character, appreciating his commitment to you, and considering his needs and values.

Our husbands have many needs. The ma-cho man who is self-contained, independ-ent, and invulnerable is a myth. This is a list of some of the primary needs most men have:

Self-confidence in his personhood as a man. To be listened to Companionship To be needed

For a wife, meeting these needs is what respecting your husband is all about. To bolster your husband's confidence, for ex-ample, try to encourage him by being his Number One fan. Every husband wants his wife to be on his team, to coach him when necessary, but most of all to be his cheer-leader. A husband needs a wife who is be-hind him, believing in him, appreciating him, and cheering him on as he goes out into the world every day.

READINGS

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—Year C

Reading I: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29 Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8 Reading II: Revelat. 21:10-14, 22-23 Gospel: John 14:23-29

A BETTER WORLD

No celebration of Easter would be complete without a reference to the peace brought to us by the Paschal mystery. Today’s liturgy provides us with that reference: ‘Peace’ is my farewell to you, my peace is my gift to you.

Peace is what Jesus gave us in his redemp-tive acts of dying and rising.

The early Christian communities experienced dissension and controversy. The reading from Acts documents the manner in which the leaders of the church resolved those con-flicts and brought peace to the Church.

There is a lesson for us in the elements of their peaceful settlement: the exercise of re-sponsible leadership, respect for all the mem-bers of the community, and the decision “not to lay on you any burden beyond that which is strictly necessary.”

“O God, let all the nations praise you!” for you have rescued them from death and offered them the gift of peace through your resurrec-tion.

The perfect world, we Christians believe, is beyond the horizon, in an endless eternity where God will be all in all. But a better world is here for human hands and hearts and minds to make.

For the community of faith the risen Christ is the beginning and end of all things. For all things were created through him and all things will return to the Father through him. It is our belief in the risen Christ which sus-tains us in confronting the awesome chal-lenge of the nuclear arms race.

Celebrating May as the “Month of Mary” is a pious practice that dates back centuries in t h e C a t h o l i c Church.

There is no better way to honor moth-erhood this coming weekend than to celebrate our Virgin Mary. Without Mary, there would be no Jesus, and thus, no salvation. Catholics need to

remember the important tradition of honor-ing Mary in May. Here you have some sug-gestions of how you can make the month of May a time of fitting tribute to Our Lady.

1. Go to Confession & daily Mass. All devo-tions to Mary point us to her Son, Jesus. She continually intercedes for us so that we may have a deeper relationship with Our Lord. As Pope Paul VI said, "The Mass is the most per-fect form of prayer." Also, making a good con-fession will eliminate spiritual barriers that prevent us from drawing closer to Jesus.

2. Say the Rosary daily. The Rosary is easy to say during your daily commute or while wait-ing in line. Or make it a family affair by pray-ing it together before bedtime. If the entire rosary is too much, try just a decade or two.

3. Learn more about Our Lady's apparitions. Over hundreds of years Mary has come bring-ing messages designed to draw us closer to her Son, Jesus. From Portugal to Mexico, and from France to Ireland, thousands of pilgrims travel to these famous sites each year.
