Media members treated to a taste of Kohler On April 13, a group of culinary writers, travel writers, freelancers, and other media members were treated to a day of memorable meals, sweet morsels, and a “Kohlernary” tour of the Kitchens of Kohler. The day began with lunch in The Wisconsin Room alongside farmers from the region who pro- vide Kohler with the freshest of fresh foods, including representa- tives from Fox Valley Berkshire Pork, LaClare Farms Cheese, and Trusted Earth Farm and Forage. Executive Chef Rick Boyer and Wisconsin Room Chef Alex Glass also spoke about offerings at The American Club Resort. Media members were then shut- tled to the Craverie for chocolates and wine and a chance to pose questions to Kohler Original Recipe Chocolate chocolatier Anette Righi and Mixologist Jason Van Auken. Righi said plans are in the works for a new line of chocolates to be introduced before next winter’s holiday season. She spoke of Herbert Kohler’s passion for chocolate, and possible expan- sion of the business, including a separate building for making the chocolates if the need arises. (This prompted one of the culinary writ- ers to ask if Kohler plans to have its own version of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory!) Righi said the ultimate goal would be for Kohler to own its own cocoa bean planta- tion, but that would probably be 20 years down the road. The group then returned to The American Club for a behind the scenes tour of the kitchens and laundry room, led by Director of Hotels Christine Loose. The high- light was the chance to observe The American Club’s chefs, Kris Burns and John Vollmar, prepar- ing sweets, and to take a look at the huge machine that cleans all the resort’s towels and linens. After a break, the group re- turned for a Horse & Plow grand opening celebration, where Chef Loren Rue and Anello Mollica of Central Waters Brewing Company took questions and served up drinks and appetizers. The evening was capped off with an intimate sweets and cheese recep- tion at the Winery Bar. New Squad: You may have seenour new squad over the last sev-eral weeks. It stands out becauseit is an SUV. Over the last decade,we have purchased only FordCrown Victorias every year ex-cept one (Charger in 2008). TheCrown Victoria was the largestpolice sedan made, which wasneeded due to the amount ofequipment for patrol and as FirstResponders. Production of theCrown Victoria was discontinued,

leaving smaller sedans or SUVsas the only options. The Ford Ex-plorer we purchased is All-wheeldrive, and was not much morethan the smaller sedan. This vehi-cle won’t require snow tires, etc.and should have a higher resalevalue than the sedans also. Youwill probably see more and moreof these on patrol with other agen-cies, who are in the same predica-ment.

Kohler students testing the watersThe TTW science enrichment

program allowed students to par-ticipate in a community serviceproject which encouraged them toemploy both biology and chem-istry skills. Students activelyshared in data collecting, analyz-ing, and interpreting biology andchemistry data related to the waterquality of the Sheboygan River.Kohler students tested a site alongthe river near Black Wolf RunGolf Course. Students from thecounty experienced the scope ofthe Sheboygan River Watershedvia a bus tour at the beginning ofthe school year. This year weworked with the Great Lakes Areaof Concern Program, along with

Camp Y-Coda, the DNR, and UW-Sheboygan water quality exten-sion. Water quality specialistsexplained the many facets of thewatershed with stops at many lo-cations along the tour, and ex-plained the dredging of the PCB’s.The area schools then gathered tobe trained on how to accuratelyconduct each of the tests. Some ofthe tests included dissolved oxy-gen, BOD, pH, temperature, totalphosphates, nitrates, turbidity, totalsolids, fecal coliform, andmacroinvertebrates. The data col-lection portion of the program pro-vided students an opportunity toconduct water quality tests and ac-curately report data. The Kohler

group also presented a program forthe 8th graders, participated in acanoe trip, and went on a snowshoe hike along the river. OnEarth Day, April 22, 2013, stu-dents attended a watershed countySymposium. Students from tenschools throughout the county re-searched and discussed the humanimpacts, both positive and nega-tive, and analyzed the river datafrom upstream to downstream.Along with sharing and presentingthe data, students suggested expla-nations for their findings, andworked together to explore possi-ble action plans that might have apositive impact on the area’s landconservation and the environment.

The Carriage House offers aunique guest experience in a vari-ety of ways, most notably withaccess to the common areas of theKohler Waters Spa – a tranquilspa known for its innovative hy-drotherapy treatments and top-level service. Guests who stay atThe Carriage House also enjoycomplimentary continental break-fast, afternoon tea and eveningcordials, all while never having toleave the comfort of the building. Many guests enjoy the entire fa-cility in their robes, changingonly to venture for dinner at oneof the 11 restaurants throughoutthe resort. Each room in The Car-riage House also features aKOHLER bathtub for completerelaxation.

As of this writing, the CarriageHouse will have a brand new en-trance off Highland Drive byMay 24 (weather permitting),

providing guests with a specialgreeted arrival from the frontdesk staff. The renovated historicbuilding continues to serve as abrilliant showcase of the com-pany’s plumbing and interiorsproducts and as a resort destina-tion for the discerning travelerwho seeks the finest in hotel sur-roundings, amenities and service.

“The Carriage House offers atruly memorable experience forour guests,” says Christine Loose,Director of Hotels for Kohler Co.“From the new entrance to therenovated rooms, every part ofthe experience has been enhancedand elevated. Many of our Car-riage House guests rarely leavethe building and are able to havethe ultimate relaxing getawaywhile enjoying the spa’s relax-ation pool, roof-top deck and fire-places.”

With a nod to the history of theunique building, each room ofThe Carriage House is namedafter a famous carriage or car-riage manufacturer. The décor ison par with the major renovationat The American Club hotel, in-corporating dark wood accents, elegant furnishings and rich col-ored draperies.

Furthermore, 12 rooms of therooms include Mark David trunksnear the bedside as a nod to theinterior of a historic carriage. Theguest room renovation incorpo-rates plumbing, furniture and tileproducts from Kohler Co.’s di-verse product portfolio. The prod-ucts are incorporated from the

following brands: KOHLER,Kallista, Baker, Mark David,McGuire, Ann Sacks and Robern.

Just as in The American Club,The Carriage House rooms in-clude a porcelain Karner Butter-fly, made at the Kohler factoryacross the street. “This butterflyis a unique way for the guest tocommunicate to the housekeepingstaff if they desire fresh linens,”said Loose. “We choose theKarner Blue Butterfly because ofits special story in Wisconsin. This particular species was en-dangered but is now flourishingin the State of Wisconsin. This isour way of helping tell that suc-cess story through our conserva-tion efforts.”

The company is continuallyrenovating the hotel and its prop-erties to provide Five-Star ameni-ties and the latest Kohler Co.products.
