Dairy Products May Be Most Efective in Targeting Metabolic Syndrome (MetS)MetS is characterized by obesity, dyslipidemias, hypertension and hyperglycemia,
and impacts 34 percent of the U.S. adult population. Nutrition scientists at the
University of Connecticut, Storrs evaluated data from epidemiological studies and
clinical interventions suggesting that one or more dairy components might directly affect
MetS parameters. Researchers found that calcium reduces
body weight by modulating vitamin D concentrations in
plasma and activating genes involved in fatty acid synthesis
and reducing those involved in lipolysis. Peptides present in
milk have been associated with blood pressure reductions.
BCAAs may increase post-prandial insulin secretion
and regulate plasma glucose levels, and leucine, an
abundant amino acid in milk, may be responsible
for decreased plasma glucose through modulation of
mTOR. Through different proposed mechanisms, dairy
nutrients may target all components of MetS. (Dugan CE,
Fernandez ML. Yale J Biol Med. 2014 Jun 6;87(2):135-
147). MMSN Featured Product: MaxPro

Phosphatidic Acid (PA) Signifcantly Improves Muscle Hypertrophy, Lean Body Mass and Maximum Strength In this landmark study, top
sports science researchers at
the University of Tampa set out
to compare the effects of PA to
stimulate mTOR signaling and
its ability to augment resistance
training-induced changes in body
composition and performance.
Trained subjects consumed either
750 mg PA daily or placebo and
each took part in an 8 week
periodized resistance training
program. Results showed that PA
signifcantly increased lean body
mass (+2.4 kg), cross sectional
area (+1.0 cm), and leg press
strength (+51.9 kg) over placebo.
Researchers concluded that PA
signifcantly activates mTOR and
signifcantly improved responses in
skeletal muscle hypertrophy, lean
body mass and maximal strength
to resistance exercise. (Joy JM,
Gundermann DM, Lowery RP, et

Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ) Infuences Mitochondrial Energy-Related MetabolismScientists at University of California, Davis set out to evaluate the
effects of PQQ on mitochondrial energy-related
metabolism. Two studies were conducted that
included 10 subjects (5 females, 5 males) each
taking PQQ administered as a daily dose.
PQQ supplementation resulted in signifcant
antioxidant function (TBAR) and decreases in
indices of infammation (C-reactive protein,
IL-6, and urinary methylated amines, and
N-oxide) consistent with enhanced mitochondria-
related functions. All standard clinical indices
were normal. The data are among the frst to
link systemic effects of PQQ to corresponding
mitochondrial energy-related metabolic effects in
humans. (Harris CB, Chowanadisai W, Mishchuk
