By DAVID CARRFAR from home, out of season, small population. None of this was abarrier for our team in Lyon, particularly for the outstandingwomen athletes of Masters WA.Margaret Saunders again won thesteeple. Peggy Macliver was part ofthe world record 4x400m. MelissaFoster won one gold and one silvermedals. Better known as a hammerthrower, Byrony Glass won silver inthe weight throw and bronze in thethrows pentathlon. Lynne Ventriscontinued her string of gold medalwalks. Lorna Lauchlan provedherself as a track walker. CarolBowman battled as hard as anyonefor her two medals, while LorraineLopes again displayed her talent.

What do they have in common?(Leaving aside obvious issues oftime and money).

All managed their injuries, hadsuitable training programmes andestablished short and long termgoals.

Peggy was barely able to walktwelve months ago. Shepersevered, took the right advice andtreatment, ran in the water, ranintervals and did sprint training inDave Wyatt's group. Margaret ran in

the water and on the grass whenunable to do vigorous training.Lynne Ventris always walks highmileage and adheres to her coach'sadvice. Lorna solicited a trainingpartner, Jan Fletcher, to pace hertrackwork.

For Lorraine it was whatevermileage she could manage, interspersed with intervals. Carol'smedals were earned by many longruns and weekly interval sessions. All of them overcame injuries orpersonal tribulations.

An outstanding long jumper,Melissa Foster has worked ontechnique with Ann Masters andLyndsey Glass. She was rewardedwith gold and an Australian record inthe triple jump, silver in the longjump and a solid performance in hernew event, the heptathlon.

Here is a forecast: Perth 2016 willsee the emergence of a wonderfulgroup of men who were not presentin Lyon. Ten names come readily tomind.

Aussies make mark

By DAVID CARRTHE best publicity for Perth 2016 camefrom our performances on the track.

In the new uniform we looked good andhad enough success to impress theopposition.

For instance, with about 12 times ourpopulation, USA would need to win 624gold to equal our 52 on a per capita basis. They won 57. One calculation includedmedals won for distance of travel. Thatway, we run faster than the French.

We can expect a home-ground advantagenext year.

The championships were well conductedand Lyon was hospitable, and tolerant ofour bumbling few words of French. Usingfour tracks, as much as an hour apart, andtemperatures up to 39C tested us, but it wasthe same for all and once we found our wayaround, it was no problem. Conditionsseemed not to affect performances.

At the track, there was a sense of theatre, much as would see at a basketball game.Plenty of loud music and pairedcommentators stirring the crowd.

WA’s Matt Staunton, MarkElms, Melissa Foster andClive Choate soak up theatmosphere of theopening ceremony.
