AFLV

12 members from our Greek community attended the 2014 Association of Fra-

ternal Leadership and Values Conference February 6-9 in Indianapolis, Indiana

located at the JW Marriott, the largest hotel and conference center in the mid-

west. AFLV had almost 3000 students and faulty from all over the U.S. and Cana-

da who attended informational sessions about current events and issues that

impact fraternity and sorority communities.

Maverick Greeks took home awards and were recognized on academic

accomplishments. Our Greek advisor, John Bulcock, and Grant Smith from Phi

Kappa Psi took first place in the Order of Omega Case Study Competition com-

peting against 32 teams. For the competition, they received a situation that has

happened on a campus in the past. It was their job to come up with a solution

on how to solve it. Our community was also recognized by the Gamma Sigma

Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society for having a higher overall GPA in

fall than the university average with a 3.0 average compared to 2.92, and in

spring of 2013 with a 3.05 average compared to 3.02.

The 2013 Panhellenic Council also brought back 5 awards of their own in

Council Management, Public Rela-

tions, Membership Recruitment,

Risk Reduction & Management,

and Self-Governance & Judicial

Affairs. Last year, the Panhellenic

Council took home 4 awards, an

improvement from last year.

Pie for Pi

Every semester, Maverick greeks recognizes its mem-

bers for achieving the Dean’s List, or at least a 3.14 GPA in

the previous semester. At the first all-Greek of every

month, those members receive a slice of pie for all their

hard work!

Sorority Social and Fraternity Meet and Greet

Spring semester is underway which means: it’s time to start recruiting! All 4 so-

rorities and 9 fraternities attended the Sorority Social and Fraternity Meet and Greet

January 29th. Interested students attended seeking more information of what Greek life

was about at MSU. Both events were very and our community is diligently recruiting po-

tential leaders of tomorrow!

Sloppy Joes

Alpha Chi Omega-Delta Tau held their first annual Sloppy Joes with A-Chi-O’s philanthropy event February

22. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Cada House of Mankato, Delta Tau’s local philanthro-

py. The Cada House serves domestic and sexual assault victims throughout the region. “Alpha Chi Omega’s

national philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. We are lucky that we can help the Cada House as

much as we do,” says Courtney Igbo-Ogbonna.

The event was held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. 160 members of the Mankato com-

munity, the church, students, as well as the greek community from MSU and Gustavus Adolphus College

were all in attendance raising over $1500. The show was ran by the Vice President of Philanthropy, Kristy

Rotchadl, who just joined Alpha Chi Omega fall of 2013.

Delta Chi Regional Leadership Convention

The Mankato chapter of Delta Chi hosted their Regional Leadership Convention Feb-

ruary 21-23 here at Minnesota State Mankato. Even with a snowstorm making road

conditions dangerous, 220 members attended from region 4 which includes Minne-

sota, Iowa, South Dakota, Colorado, Missouri, and Kansas. "Despite the terrible

weather that started the weekend, the weekend was a great success,” says Delta

Chi President, Clint Haala, “Many Delta Chis from the region were able to still make

the tough trek to Mankato, and make the very most out of the conference." Minne-

sota State put in a bid and was approved at last year’s RLC held at the University of

Missouri, Mizzou. Since then, Cortney Leneave and Kole Dudley, the event coordina-

tors for RLC, started working tirelessly making the weekend a huge success.

The conference focused on motivating and informing chapter members

while bonding throughout the weekend keeping in mind their four core values: char-

acter, justice, education and friendship. Sessions were held discussing topics such as

membership education and alcohol training, along with smaller breakout sessions

for chapter executives. The conference was attended by the chapter president, his

executive board, and any other leaders of their respective chapters.

The brothers also had some time to hang out in a more informal setting par-

ticipating in activities like ice skating at the All Seasons Arena and karaoke. “It was

fun seeing some southern states lace ‘em up and giving ice skating their best shot,”

says LeNeave. “Kole and I poured our hearts into planning RLC for the past year! It’s

gratifying doing something like this.”

Fraternity Man of the Month

David Schieler was nominated by Alpha Chi Omega for the first Fraternity Man of the

month. Schieler, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha-Lambda Delta Zeta is passionate about

everything he does whether it is for the University, for our Greek Community, his school

work and much, much more. His efforts are recognized daily as he serves as the Vice

President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council. Schieler also serves as the Vice

President of Gamma Sigma Alpha, Secretary of Order of Omega, and is the 2014 Home-

coming Chair. He is kind and welcoming to everyone he meets and has everyone’s best

interest in mind. Keep up the great work!

Sorority Women of the Month

Courtney is our first Sorority Woman of the Month from the Alpha Chi Omega-Delta Tau

chapter. She was nominated for this honor by the Sigma Chi fraternity. If you know who

Courtney is you know what a cheerful and outgoing person she can be. She is well known

around the community for her work on PHC as the Vice President of Public Relations &

Marketing and her great smile she greets you with. She was nominated to be the Sorority

Woman of the Month because no one has a better attitude than her and for all the hard

work she puts in juggling her academics, job, and her positions in her own chapter as well

on PHC. Courtney is the person who will brighten your day, no matter how bad the rest

of your day is going.
