Sheryl Barbich introduced our speaker,

George has had a long and distinguished career in aviation,

starting in 1959 when he graduated from pilot training. A native of

Nebraska, George spent his career in various capacities with the

US Military and in private business, most notably as an

experimental test pilot for the Hughes Aircraft Company. George

was inducted into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006. He is

recognized for flying over 40 types of military aircraft, logging over

8,500 hours of flying time. He currently lives in Atascadero with his

wife of 48 years.

In 1968, George entered active military service in Vietnam and

Laos. During the late 1960’s, George completed 188 combat

missions, over 600 combat hours and was awarded the

Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air

Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters.

Upon completing his tour of duty, George joined the Hughes

Aircraft Company, where for 20 years he flew a variety of aircraft

and helped develop electronic weaponry for the Cold War.

In addition to telling us about his experiences as a rescue pilot

and as a test pilot with Hughes Aircraft, George wanted to inspire

members of the club to write books. George considers himself an

average writer, and in fact quoted his wife as telling him “You’ll be

the first person to write a book who has never read one.”

George’s interest in becoming an author stemmed from his

desire to recognize many of his co-pilots who were killed in action,

who never received formal recognition in existing aviation

literature. George felt that his desire to “set the record straight” and

to tell some of the things he experienced would be accepted by

people interested in aviation history. After publishing several

magazine articles, George published his first book,

in 2004, which led to many television

appearances and interviews prior to the release of the Hollywood

movie . George’s second book,

, will be

published in 2006. He is also working on his third book.

George spoke about the process he went through to become

published, and encouraged everyone who has a story to tell to

consider writing. George mentioned that the positive feedback

from friends and colleagues has been the most rewarding aspect

of his experiences writing. George was an engaging and

inspirational speaker and clearly played an important role in

helping shape the future of aviation.
