Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam that must be met by the Muslims who meet certain criteria. The word Zakat has two different connotations:

• Linguistical, Coming from the root ‘Zaka’ which means pure and clean.

• Islamically, Zakat means a particular amount that need be paid from particular categories of wealth, to particular categories of beneficiaries, with a particular criteria.

This means that Zakat is a blessing, purity, kindness, and a contribution to the development of entitled recipients.

There are eight categories of beneficiaries who are eligible to receive Zakat, which are clearly stated in the Quran (Surah At-Taubah:60)

Allah (swt) says in this verse: “Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect (zakah) and for bringing hearts together (for Islam) and for freeing captives (or slaves) and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the (stranded) traveller - an obligation (imposed) by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.”

From the above aayah, we can see that the eight eligible categories of beneficiaries to receive Zakat are:

1) The Poor

2) The Destitute needy

3) Zakat Administrators

4) Those whose hearts are inclined towards Islam (including the new converts to Islam who lack economic support)

5) Freeing slaves

6) Those in debt (their debt is more than half of what they own)

7) In the way of Allah

8) Wayfarers (traveller who has been cut off from essential needs)

At MATW, we diligently observe these regulations under the guidance of learned scholars, and we realise that the objectives of Zakat are twofold. Spiritually, paying Zakat purifies and cleanses the payer, and helping the receiver.

MATW takes Zakat management very seriously for many important reasons, especially that it is one of the pillars of Islam, the special regulations and guidelines of this type of donation and huge impact that Zakat potentially has in changing the lives of those who are eligible to receive it.

Zakat management is important to help Muslims perform the third pillar of Islam and establish its primary function as a means to alleviate poverty. Zakat management has been argued as the most critical aspect in determining the direction of the Zakat institutions as a systematic and efficient management would ensure optimization of the Zakat.

Generally, management of Zakat has been understood to involve two activities, which are:

• Collection, and • Distribution of Zakat funds.

One main objective of Zakat management is to achieve the best possible outcome in the timely collection and distribution of zakat as ordained in Islamic Shariah.

This main objective includes the assurance that the Zakat donations are disbursed to humanitarian aid projects that are eligible to receive Zakat donations, i.e. where the beneficiaries fall under one of the eight categories listed above.

MATW has been running many humanitarian projects, some of which are ongoing, some are one-off, and some are occasional. MATW also receives different types of donations, mainly Zakat, Sadaqah, Fitrah, and Qurban.

MATW endeavours to allocate each type of donation to its eligible projects. This report discusses the Zakat donations, both receivables and distribution.

The following table contains the projects that received Full or Partial Zakat funds, and how it maps to the Zakat-eligible categories.
