Experimental Sausage

Meat from experimental pigs destined for destruc-

tion was turned into sausage and eaten by at least nine

people in Florida. It may be the first time people in the

US have eaten genetically modified meat.

This month Florida prosecutors have started an

investigation into the incident, which began when a

University of Florida employee stole three dead experi-

mental pigs. Unaware of the meat’s origin, a butcher

made sausages from it. Helen Griffin, who ate about 5

pounds of the sausages with a friend, thought they

”tasted real good“.

No ill effects were reported, but officials at theNational Institute of Health are nevertheless trying to

work out if the meat was a health risk. The pigs had

been genetically modified to carry a copy of the gene

which is involved in eye function and therefore it is

unlikely that the meat could have been dangerous.

If there was any concern it’s that the pigs had been

injected with barbiturates before they were killed. The

drug could have affected those eating the meat.

University of Florida officials are ensuring that in

the future, GM animals are spray-painted after being

killed, so it’s clear they should not be eaten.

The Hidden Internet

The World Wide Web is a data bonanza, requiring only the open sesame of a few keystrokes to spit out theinformation you need, right? Then why can’t you everfind what you are looking for? Type in the ”physics of parabolic skies“ at a search engine like Hotbot(www.hotbot.com) and the thousands of entries that flyby onscreen will make you feel like you’re looking for aproverbial needle in a haystack. And even if you siftthrough all the listings, chances are you still won’t findwhat you want.

Why? Most search engines cover only 15 percent – orless of the Web. That leaves a bulk of the informationunlisted, hidden from view. So no one knows exactly howmany Web sites exist or how many pages of informationare online. But the best guess so far, according to a sur-vey by search technology firm BrightPlanet, puts thenumber at more than 550 billion unique documents.

Granted, millions of these missing sites – such asthose celebrating a pet’s birthday or listing the minutesfrom $H meeting – are of, shall we say, limited interest. But even tabulating the major scientific and researchsites today has become a Herculean task. At some direc-tories like Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), human editors poreover submissions and index site addresses by hand. Of course this ends up being about as fast and accurate asa Florida vote count. For better results, most searchsites employ what they call bots and spiders. Bots, shortfor robots, are automated software that search engineslike AltaVista (www.altavista.com) and Google(www.google.com) employ to look relentlessly for newpages. Spiders are programs that crawl from hyperlinkto hyperlink searching for fresh prey.

Spiders and bots sound great, but they aren’tenough. One reason is speed. It can take days, for exam-ple, for a spider to circumnavigate the Web, and thenthe results must be indexed. When it was launched in

1995 AltaVista could add 3 million new listings a day, which sounds like a lot. However, analysts atCyveillance, a research firm specialising in the Internet, say that now more than 7 million new pages are being added to the net daily.

Making matters worse, spiders rely on what we doto get from page to page – hyperlinks. But the Web hascountless dead ends and blind alleys. A group of researchers from IBM, Compaq and AltaVista describesthe Web as directed network, in which links may pointfrom A to B without pointing from B to A. Furthermorethousands of sites exist like islands, with no externallinks at all. To find out what’s out there on the billions

of pages not listed on any engine, software developersare working on the next wave of search tools, which usewhat’s called distributed computing. This concept

is

Our Dearest Graduates, very soon, equipped with your Diplomas, you will set off on your journey into the adult world. Before you go,

however, let me be the spokesperson for the English teachers in our school to present you with our humble instructions for life. Always take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. So be prepared to lose sometimes but when you

lose, remember the lesson you have learnt. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. Don’t blame

others for your failures and follow the three Rs as rules, take responsibility for all your actions, have respect for others and respect for

yourself. Remember that NOT getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful piece of luck. At such moments open your arms to change

but never let go of your values. And when you’re finally successful, judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Don’t forget your loved ones on your way to success. Remember that the best relationship is the one in which your love for each other

is greater than your need for each other. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation and don’t bring up the past.

Never let a little argument injure a great friendship. Approach love and cooking the same: with reckless abandon. Be open to people but

allow yourself to spend some time alone every day. Silence is sometimes the best doctor and... answer.

Be gentle with the Earth. Respect it and be curious about it. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before. Live a good,

honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to

achieve immortality.

And finally our Dearest Graduates, learn these rules as well as all the others that you find on your way, so you know how to break

them properly.

 All the best to you!

Brian: What’s on the news? Anything interesting?

Claire: Yeah, something that I noticed here because of our arrival but have never really thought about... A survey shows that Poles are the

second most fashion conscious nation in Europe. Lots of them are wearing labels. Can you imagine they’re more fashion-conscious

than we are in the UK?

Brian: Yeah, I guess they are. But in Britain most people don’t worry that much about brands, unless they’re of a certain type, most of the

time you just wear what makes you fit in with you friends and often that doesn’t involve labels.

Claire: Maybe you’re right. But in the UK people won’t spend their last penny on a pair of Calvin Klein jeans, it’s not that important to

them. They look for bargains and spend their money on other things. Here in Poland, shops are always full of young people buying

trendy clothes; they spend a fortune on image. It’s crazy, really.

Brian: Do you think they overdo it? That they’re slaves to fashion?

Claire: Well, yeah, I do. But you have to remember that they were behind the iron curtain for years. It’s only in the last fifteen years that

they’ve had access to these things. They’re trying to catch up with the rest of Europe. They say that in Poland fifteen years ago things

were pretty dull. But look at it now, money everywhere and labels galore.

Zadanie 9

Presenter: Our program today is dedicated to talking about graffiti and a new approach to what has long been seen by many as a menace

and eyesore. So, first of all, is it art or vandalism? According to a recent survey conducted by the Public Opinion Institute, here in

Brighton, 40% of people were against graffiti, 53% said they didn’t mind young people expressing their artistic talents on walls but

wanted those walls to be allocated, and 10% thought that young people caught vandalizing and spraying graffiti should face heavier

fines. Well, in the studio today we have two people with a novel approach to graffiti. Max Finler and Graham Fox, I guess I can

safely say that you feel graffiti is an invaluable expression for young people?

Max: Yes, of course. Graham and I have always thought that, as we live in a free country, a country proud of its artistic traditions, people

should be allowed and, in fact, encouraged to express themselves. And graffiti is an art.

Presenter: But people who live in a free country should also be allowed not to see graffiti if they don’t want to.

Graham: Yes, I agree. Which is why we want to set up The Graffiti Gallery in Brighton. It would be the first in the country and instead of

people spray painting any wall they wish, they would be able to graffiti in a controlled environment.

Presenter: I’m sure our listeners would be interested in this gallery. Can you tell us something about where it would be, and how it could

be funded?

Max: I’m afraid at the moment I can’t give you any precise information. We are currently in talks with the local council for a site and

applying for a lottery grant. I can tell you though that it won’t be built near the Royal Pavilion, it would be further out of town. When

the plans are finalized everything will be published in the local papers and people can have their say then. But, we are hoping for

a monumental structure, with sixteen display rooms of high walls. The idea is that graffiti artists from different countries, not just theUK will come to Brighton every other summer and prepare a new exhibition.

Presenter: According to the survey results it would be quite easy to attract visitors to see the exhibition.

Graham: I don’t want to sound pompous, but we’re doing it for the arts sake. And I’m quite sure that public attendance will be high.

Presenter: Well, it all sounds terrific. I wish you lots of luck. Thanks for coming along.

Presenter: Hello, everybody and welcome to Shaggy Dog the program where we deceivers enjoy ourselves at the expense of the more

gullible public. The rules of the game are simple: you’ll hear two stories and at the end you must call in and say which one you think

is a hoax. The first correct caller pulled out of the hat wins a copy of short stories. So, let’s begin. In the studio today we have two

guests: Helen Brown, who’s such a famous actress she needs no introduction, and Brian Scott, a journalist for The Guardian.

Helen’s going to begin, so Helen, what’s your story.

Helen: Well, once, a long time ago, I was invited to a college in Wales to be a member of their jury at a drama festival. My memory is

pretty poor, so don’t expect any details, except that the performances were all great, of course, and the judging proved very difficult.

Anyway, after a busy day I was shown to my accommodation for the night, an apartment in a college house that had once belonged tothe founder of the college. I was warned that the apartment was haunted by various people, but, to be honest, I only found these

stories amusing. In fact, I was looking forward to waking at midnight and seeing ghosts of all sorts surrounding my bed. I took

a shower and turned in for the night, I was really quite exhausted so I was fast asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. But soon after

I was asleep, I was woken up by a noise; a woman shouting, something like ’My brother, I will get you one day...’ She went on for about

twenty seconds in this eerie screaming voice and then the house was quiet again. But I was really shaken. It took me ages to get to

sleep again. The next day, at breakfast, after asking me if I’d slept well, and before I could answer, the organiser asked me if I could

stay and see one more performance which some actors had been acting half the night. The play was called...’Bad Brother.’ Well, that’s it.

Presenter: Thank you Helen for that disturbing story. But is it true or false? Listen to Brian’s story and then make your decision. Brian...

Brian: You know that my new book has just come out. It’s about my encounters with the rich and famous. I’ve done interviews with rock

and pop stars, writers, politicians, presidents and prime ministers, kings and queens. There is, however, one person I have never

managed to meet. My daughter’s husband. Well, don’t laugh! They got married in secret a year ago in Africa. My daughter is a vet,

you know, one of those crazy people who try to protect some endangered species, and she had been working in Africa for two years

before she met her boyfriend. I presume he also likes apes and tigers. Otherwise, she would never have married him. Anyway, I was

in Africa twice, hoping to see a happy family with a few kids running around in the jungle. Each time I visited them, however, there

was a note left for me on the door of a wooden structure that I suppose is what they’d call a house: “Dad, we are coming back in a week.We must rescue some tigers. Please feel at home.” Well, I understood they had a mission, but I only feel at home in London. So each

time I came back home a bit sad. This summer they are going to visit us in Britain before they start a new two-year project. My wife

and I have produced a note that we are going to nail to the main door: “We are at home. No tigers with us. Just come in.”

Presenter: You are wonderful parents. Thank you, Brian. Now it’s up to you, our listeners, to decide which story is true and which is the

shaggy dog story. You can call us now on 33344433. And remember, there’s a prize for the first correct answer out of the hat.

Review 1: I think we are watching promise. What surprised me...was its control. She’s not afraid to put silence on the stage. There is a lot

of tenderness in it... everyone in the play is asking for love and understanding. She states that there is a world we can go back to that

is good...That sort of conservatism surprised me.

Review 2: It all started well after midnight. They were the headline act you know, so they went last. No words can describe what was

happening in the hall as the opening keyboard swirl announced ’Light My Fire’... It was all so explosive, electrifying. People simply

went crazy. I’ll never forget it. That was the best one I’ve ever been to.

Review 3: This isn’t your mum’s classic animated movie. It just tweaks Disney’s nose with its drolly satirical but genuinely enchantinganimated adventure. It’s truly a vehicle that has something for everyone. The humor never overwhelms, seeing it just once is simply

not enough.

Review 4: It’s an excellent chiller. It’s got it all, pace, tension and a plot so tightly drawn and intriguing that you can’t put it down. It’s

gripping, from beginning to end. But, best of all, Daver sets up her characters so clinically, so tightly, that you can picture them, in

every detail.

Review 5: Feet of the Flames, with his thirty five taps in just one second he steps into a new universe where dream collides with reality.

A universe where time stands still, but the spirit never stops. This is a universe of love. Of danger. Of desire. And as a dark power

emerges, the Lord of the Dance is called to protect his people. A myth? That’s for you to decide.

Review 6: This second release from The Blue Torches had to have been the most hyped release of the year and, inevitably, it falls short.

The first track kicks off with energy and a lick so catchy you’ll be humming it to yourself all day. But by the middle of the second track

as the pace slows you can feel a formulaic tendency that renders the rest into mediocrity.

Presenter: The topic of today’s program is Reality TV . We’ve invited some teenagers in to the studio, in order to find out what they, the

young generation, have to say on the subject in question. We’ve got Jo, aged 17, Tom, 18 and Hugh, aged 19, all from Bristol. First of

all, I’d like to ask you all: do you approve or disapprove of reality shows on television? Jo.

Jo: Well, even if we did, we can’t go to the producers and ask them to stop. For them it’s just a new way of making money. But the

problem lies somewhere different. They only make them because people want to watch them.

Hugh: It seems to me they’ve little choice. TV channels are packed with all sorts of talk shows and other garbage that people call “Reality

TV”. I did watch Big Brother for cognitive reasons, but there’s nothing real in it. Everybody knows they’re on TV, so they don’t act

natural. It’s just a badly cast play!Tom: Hugh, what do you mean, calling it ‘garbage’? My elder brother’s studying psychology and he told me that you can learn something

from Big Brother. About how a person functions in a community or how they develop relationships with other people.

Jo: I take Tom’s point. That’s true, in a way. But there is far more to it. I think some participants of reality shows develop psychological

disorders due to being forced to live in a closed area for three months and following some stupid rules. Look at Janice in Big Brother.

Tom: But it was her decision to take part in the program. She, and the others, knew what they were in for before the program started.

Hugh: It just shows that people are ready to do anything for fame or money. I wouldn’t do it.

Tom: But they had fun as well, now they’re famous and one of them will be rich.

Jo: Not seeing your family for three months is no fun.

Tom: You’re right. I wouldn’t do it. But Big Brother was a funny program.

Hugh: It depends on how you define “funny,” Tom. For me, I thought it was boring. I’d rather hang out with my friends than waste my free

time watching it.

Jo: Well, I did like to watch Big Brother once a week. Everybody talked about it so I wanted to be up-to-date. I only wonder how far show

business is ready to go in the search for the ultimate cheap entertainment.

Presenter: Thank you very much for a very interesting discussion. Now, it’s time for our listeners to express their views on Reality TV .

I was working in Japan for a year, as an English teacher. And, because of a shortage of teachers, my company had sent me out there early,

before my visa had been processed. So I ended up working there for a month without a visa, you know, illegally. It’s not really a problem

though, I mean the authorities don’t really mind, most of the schools do it. It’s okay as long as you get a visa within a month or so.

Anyway, my school had to get me a visa, and I couldn’t get it in Japan, so they sent me to the nearest country, which is South Korea,

a couple of hours away by plane. It was great really, a free, fully paid holiday, they even paid for my food whilst I was there. And I had to

be there for five days. That’s how long it took to process the visa application. So I spent the five days wondering around Seoul, sampling

the local food and seeing the sights.

On the third day though I had a real shock. I’d already noticed the police, it’s hard not to in Seoul. It’s not like they just wonder around

in pairs with silly hats like they do in the UK. In Seoul they’re everywhere. Guarding things. There were even two policemen constantly

guarding the underpass by my hotel. I walked passed them everyday. Well, one day I was walking back to my hotel from town when I walked

into the largest police presence I’ve ever seen. There were hundreds of them, lining the walls on the left, shoulder to shoulder, and sitting

on the pavements, in rows five deep. There were also buses parked along the road, and there were policemen making food and changing

into riot gear. I had to walk between them, to get back to the hotel. I was totally terrified. I mean, these guys riots gear was a little moreheavy duty than I’m used to. They all had guns, pistols and some even had what looked like machine guns. And they had armour, body

armour, helmets, the lot. They looked pretty scary, I can tell you. Walking through them I was trying to keep a low profile, not be seen,

but it’s tough not to be noticed when you’re a westerner in Asia. But, when I caught a policeman’s eye they didn’t stare at me, they

weren’t nasty looking. Instead they called out, ’hello, how are you?’ or ’pleased to meet you’ one even called ’I love Manchester United’.

So I nodded and smiled and said ‘hello’ back through these swaths of riot police, all the time trying to ignore their guns and looking

innocent. It’s odd how the presence of police makes you feel guilty, even if you’ve done nothing wrong.

When I got back to the hotel I asked the owner what was going on. He told me that the police were guarding a block of the city where

two rival monk factions were fighting. Like a gang turf war. They were battling over a temple and the police couldn’t interfere with monks.

So they let them fight. But they wouldn’t let any non-monks into the area and they wouldn’t let the monks spread their battle into any

other part of town. That’s what they were doing, guarding the block. The hotel owner told me that the monks eventually burnt the temple

down. Which completely goes against my idea of what monks are all about.

The Rise and Fall of Tobacco – excerpts

from a Special Report by Simon Reeve

______G______ (13.0 – przyk∏ad)

Tobacco is the common name of the plant  Nicotiana

tabacum (and to a lesser extent   N. Rustica). CarolusLinnaeus, a Swedish botanist named the plant  genus

nicotiana in1753 after Jean Nicot, the French diplomat, who helped popularise its use. Although tobacco origi-nated in the tropics, and first began growing in the Americas around 6,000BC, it is now cultivated through-out the world. (...)

friendly ones. Indians smoked to put themselves intouch with the spirit world, and a gesture of friendli-ness using the peace pipe. Creek Indians valued thetobacco plant so highly they made it a warrior and gaveit a war name, ’hitci’. The Cherokees called tobacco’tsalu’, or ’fire in the mouth’. Several other tribesbelieved that tobacco sprouted from the grave of a greatelder who travelled from tribe to tribe encouraging co-operation and friendship.

______________ (13.2)Doctors have long puzzled over the reason some smok-ers quickly become addicted to tobacco, while othersseem able to smoke now and then with relative ease.  About one in ten smokers are ’occasional’ users whocan go for days without withdrawal symptoms. But themajority are completely hooked on nicotine, and the keymay lie in the chemistry of the brain. One theory is thatsome people have particularly low level of dopamine, abrain chemical that stimulates addictive behaviour bytransmitting pleasure signals when a person eats choco-late, gets a hug, or has a drag on a cigarette. (...)

____________ (13.3)

Some doctors now claim that tobacco could have bene-ficial side-effects. A Dutch research team followed 8,000people aged 50 or more for up to ten years, and showedthat smokers have nearly 50 percent lower levels of Parkinson’s disease than non-smokers. The risk waslowest among those who smoked the most. (...) Nicotinemay also help Alzheimer’s patients and children suffer-ing from a neurological disorder characterised by invo-luntary movements. (...)

______________ (13.4)

As cigarette use is discouraged in the West, tobaccofirms are turning to developing countries for new cus-

tomers. Many give cigarettes away to children in thedeveloping world in the hope that they will start buying the brand. A study of 13–15-year-old schoolchildren in68 countries, by the WHO and the US Centers forDisease Control and Prevention, found that roughly 11per cent of children in South America and theCaribbean have recently been offered free cigarettes bytobacco company reps. In Russia, it is 17 per cent; in Jordan, 25 per cent. ”As we start to squeeze them herein terms of not selling to children, they need replace-ment smokers,“ according to Mohammad N Akheter, executive director of the American Public Health Association in Washington. They’re finding these sub-

stitute smokers in the third world.” (...) By themid–2020s, the WHO predicts, 85 per cent of smokerswill come from the world’s poorer countries.

_____________ (13.5)

Advertising has always played a major role in selling tobacco. Consumption of the plant exploded during the20th century, as new marketing techniques trans-formed its use from a matter of taste to one of identityand lifestyle choice. In the first half of the 1900s,adverts touted supposed health benefits and some ciga-rette brands claimed the endorsement of doctors. Post-war advertising broke down barriers against cigarettesand massively increased demand. Marlboro, initially

marketed in the 1920s as a ’luxury cigarette for thesophisticated woman’, was transformed by a successful1950s campaign into the choice of the masculine

GREEN TRAVEL TIPSAbout 700 million people worldwide travel every year, which is harmful for the environment. There’s a lot you can do to travel responsibly and reduce the environmental effectsof travelling.

4.1. ___

The public transport system in Britain is excellent. Try to include car-free days into your holiday. Remember that cycling is a great environmentally friendly way to get around. And why not check if the place you want to visit is within walking distance? Sightseeing onfoot will keep you fit!4.2. ___

Hotels use large amounts of electricity to light rooms, do the laundry and heat water. In your accommodation, turn off the lights and take short showers instead of baths. Simple things likeusing your towels more than once or turning off the air-conditioning can make a bigdifference.

4.3. ___ Book flights with airlines that recycle packages left after serving food to passengers. In hotelrooms, reuse the plastic cups, or bring your own reusable cups. And do not take plastic bagsfor your shopping. It’s really important to reduce waste.4.4. ____

Do your shopping in small independent shops. Try regional food specialities and don’t missfarmers’ markets where you can discover delicious selections of meats, cheeses, and organic

 products.4.5. ____

Once you’ve finished your trip, pass on your sightseeing guides and brochures to a friendor second-hand bookshop. You can also leave them at your hotel for another guest to use –

that way you’ll have less to carry back home and someone else will take advantage of localattractions.4.6. _____

Did you know you can take connecting trains from hundreds of European destinations directto London’s King’s Cross Station? Planes produce huge amounts of pollution, so whenever

possible consider travelling by train or coach.4.7. ____

Before you book a package tour or an excursion, ask the tour operator about group size andthe hotels you are going to stay in. Remember that smaller groups and smaller hotels are

better for the environment. Local tourist guides are also an advantage. They can tell you moreabout local culture than any travel book.

BEN & JERRY’S – THE MEN BEHIND THE ICE CREAMIce cream is a sweet treat that most people like. Although vanilla is the most popular flavor worldwide, the number of varieties and producers is endless. One of the best-knowncompanies producing ice cream in America is Ben & Jerry’s. But who were Ben and Jerryand how did they succeed?

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were childhood friends and classmates who grew up inBrooklyn. They both had some experience of work while they were at school. Ben drovean ice cream truck and Jerry sold candy and snacks in the school cafeteria. However, after graduating from high school they went their own ways. Ben attended various collegesin the Northeast but failed his exams and decided to leave his studies to teach pottery ona working farm in the Adirondack region. Jerry attended Oberlin College where he studied

medicine. After graduating, Jerry returned to New York to work as a lab technician. While working there, he shared a Manhattan apartment with Ben and that’s when theydecided to go into the food business together.

At first they thought about making bagels or setting up a bakery but they found out that thenecessary equipment was too expensive. Instead, they chose ice cream. They decidedBurlington was an ideal location for an ice cream shop because it was a college town withmany young people and virtually no competition. They moved out of New York, took a course in ice cream making and in 1978 opened the first Ben & Jerry’s in a converted gasstation.

Their original ice cream shop became the locals’ favorite, not only thanks to its wonderfulice cream and creative flavors. Ben and Jerry also did their best to connect with

the community by organizing special events, for example film festivals, and giving away freescoops of ice cream on the first anniversary of the store opening. The tradition still continuestoday, so if you happen to be in the US on the right day, you can also get your free scoopof Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

Mom got the postcard a few days ago. It says Congratulations in big curly letters, and at the very top is the address of Studio TV-15 on West 58th Street. After three years of

trying, she has actually made it. She’s going to be a contestant on The $20,000 Pyramid ,

which is hosted by Dick Clark. At the bottom of the card there’s the date she’s supposed

to show up, April 27.

On the postcard there’s also a list of things to bring. She needs some extra clothes in case

she wins and makes it to another show. I think she should definitely take some hats with her.

Unlike me, Mom has glossy red hair which might distract viewers. She could also visit her

hairdresser to have her hair dyed, but if I tell her so, she won’t listen.

Yesterday Mom brought a big paper calendar from work and hung it on the kitchen wall.

She drew a pyramid on April 27 and put dollar signs and exclamation marks all around it.

Then, she went out and bought a fancy egg timer that can accurately measure half a minute,

which is the time she gets to answer in the show.

April twenty-seventh is also Richard’s birthday. Richard is Mom’s boyfriend who works

in a bank. He studied languages, so he and I are going to help Mom practise every single

night. That’s why I sit at my desk every afternoon and write down questions for her. Instead,

I should be watching after-school TV, which is the right of every latchkey child. ‘Latchkey

child’ is a name for a kid with keys who stays alone at home after school until a grown-up

gets back from work to make dinner. Mom hates that expression. ‘I’m sure someone rich,

strict and awful invented it. Probably German,’ she says, looking at Richard, who is German but not at all rich, strict or awful.

Richard looks the way I imagine guys on sailboats do  –  tall, blond, and suntanned.

Or maybe I imagine guys on sailboats that way because Richard loves to sail. He looks

especially big next to Mom, who’s short and so tiny she has to buy some of her clothes

in the kids’ department.

We have exactly twenty-one days to get Mom ready for the game show. So just like every

afternoon, I’m copying words for her practice session tonight when I hear Mom’s key

in the door.

‘Miranda? I’m back!’ she calls down the hall and a moment later sticks her head in my room.

‘Are you hungry? I thought we could wait with dinner for Richard.’

‘I can wait.’ The truth is I’ve just eaten an entire bag of crisps. After-school junk food

is another fundamental right of the latchkey child.

‘Are you sure? Want me to cut up an apple for you?’

‘What’s a kind of German junk food?’ I ask her. ‘Wiener crispies?’

She stares at me. ‘I have no idea. Do you want the apple or not?’

‘No, and get out of here. I’m doing the words for later.’

‘Great.’ She smiles and goes back to the kitchen. I get back to my word piles. I really hope

Mom wins the money!
